Old Monk
Old Monk is the Archstone demon for the Tower of Latria, section 3-3, however you do not fight Old Monk directly, instead you fight a Black Phantom. The interesting part is if you are playing online you may end up fighting another player. If you are in offline mode, you will fight against a magic focused, but standard Black Phantom. Once defeated, the Old Monk will drop the Yellow Demon's Soul which can be converted into the Insanity Catalyst by Blacksmith Ed, the Homing Soul Arrow spell by Sage Freke, the Visionary, Soul Thirst by Yuria, the Witch, Banish by Saint Urbain or consumed for 26,400 Souls.

Monk's Head Collar (Black Phantom) |
If you are online, either in Human or Soul form, when you enter the first fog gate of the Old Monk section of Tower of Latria there is a very good chance Old Monk will summon another player as a Black Phantom to fight you in the boss arena. You will know when you are up against a human player as you will see the summoning message.
Being summoned
If you place a Blue, Red or Black Eye Stone anywhere in the Tower of Latria you may be summoned to fight as a Black Phantom for the Old Monk. You are only summoned if your Soul Level is close to that of the Host player. Once summoned, you will be transported to the boss arena and will have to wait until the host player makes it up the stairs.
If the Host player fails to make it to the arena, there is no Character Tendency shift. If however you do defeat the Host player - even if you used a Blue Eye Stone - there will be a Character Tendency shift towards black for you.
Either way, if the Host dies you may receive the Monk's Head Collar and your body form back.
If you do not wish to fight as a Black Phantom and run the risk of a drop in Character Tendency (or any other reason), you can use the White Eye Stone to return to your World. There is no shift Tendency or Soul Level drop for using a White Eye Stone in this arena.
The Monk's Head Collar is always shown on the Black Phantom in this arena - if they are a human who has been summoned or the Black Phantom CPU. The collar does not replace any effects from other helmets worn when summoned. It is purely visual on human players - unless they are already wearing one.
Playing offline
If you are in offline mode or there are no Blue, Red or Black Eye Stone players with a Soul Level similar to yours online, you will face a standard Black Phantom. The game will give you a magic focused, fast opponent with Claws and an Insanity Catalyst. The Black Phantom can roll out of the way of slower weapons and will use Homing Soul Arrow against you.
Strategy
The Thief's Ring and Graverobber's Ring will both work in this arena and the Black Phantom CPU can lose you in the arena. This is less likely against a human player as they will most probably know about where you are. This goes both ways as well!
If you are up against a human, see if you can spot them through the fog gate before entering. If you can not see them, be sure to run or roll as soon as you enter as the other player may be planning a quick hit or back stab as you enter.
The spell Warding can help a lot against the CPU, and the Eternal Warrior's Ring can help to keep the pressure on. A fast weapon is a very good choice, even if it does less damage. If you have no real choice but a hard hitting weapon, try to time your first hit so that it knocks the Black Phantom CPU down. Then try to make each following hit do the same as they get up.
Each human fight is going to be different but a number Black Phantoms will try to hide and pick you off as you enter with a back stab, God's Wrath or even Firestorm. Again, Warding can help, so can a quick roll or sprint. Then you will have to quickly counter this attack. You are on your own after this.

Scirvir, the Wanderer
Scirvir, the Wanderer appears in Stonefang Tunnel, section 2-2 in both Pure White and Black World Tendency. You can find him in the tunnel half way down the pit with the walkways that you can drop down as a shortcut to Flamelurker. In the tunnel you can also find two Crystal Lizards.
In Pure White World Tendency, as a Human, Scirvir will talk about the Dragon Bone Smasher and tell you roughly where to find it. If you show the Dragon Bone Smasher to him, he will give you a Pure Greystone. The weapon you show him does not need to be from this play through - it can be from a previous game.
In Pure Black World Tendency, a Black Phantom Scirvir, the Wanderer will simply attack you. This can be a little bit of a tough fight. Once defeated, he will drop the Talisman of Beasts. If Black Phantom Scirvir falls to his death you should be able to pick-up the Talisman from his body at the bottom of the pit or on reload of the map in the corner of the tunnel where you first see him.
Defeating the Black Phantom Scirvir, the Wanderer will shift the World Tendency for Stonefang Tunnel 90% towards White when you return to the Nexus. You may want to visit the Primeval Demon in Stonefang before fighting Scirvir.
Fighting a Black Phantom
Scirvir, the Wanderer will cast Regeneration on seeing you and attack with his Short Sword, Fire Spray, Fireball and Ignite. He has limit mana (magic) power and will run out, which is a good thing. There are a number of ways to approach this battle. Here are few tips:
- Cast Anti-Magic Field - this will disable Scirvir, the Wanderers Regeneration and fire based magic attacks. This makes the battle a lot safer for you. You may have to cast this more than once!
- Equip either Thief's Ring or Graverobber's Ring and get yourself onto the walkway opposite the tunnel entrance. Enable Dying ATK Power UP and attack with your bow. Do not shoot too fast or he will start to dodge your arrows. Scirvir will also come out of the tunnel but should not attack. If you do not attack he will start to wander back to his corner.
- Just keep dodging his Fire Spray and Fireball attacks and he will run out of magic - then it is a straight fight.
- Upgrade a Dagger, something like a Secret Dagger as much as possible to suit your skills. Wear the Thief's Ring or Graverobber's Ring and enter the tunnel a little. Armed with your upgraded dagger, rush Scirvir while he is in the corner and just keep attacking him. The trick is to keep him in this corner of the tunnel. Keep attacking and he will not get a chance to do anything else.
- After your first play through if you have Soulsucker, wear the Thief's Ring or Graverobber's Ring and rush at him, then cast Soulsucker. As Scirvir sees you he will start to cast Regeneration - which takes a little bit of time. If you time this rush and cast correctly you should be finishing Soulsucker just as he finishes Regeneration.

Maiden in Black
The Maiden in Black cares for the Nexus of Boletaria. After defeating Phalanx in the first section of Boletarian Palace and speaking with the Monumental upstairs, she will give you the Blue and White Eye Stones which can be used for offering your services to living players. She will also then allow you to exchange Demon's Souls for increasing your Soul level. At each Soul level you can increase one of eight stats.
While in the Nexus, the Maiden in Black is the only character that can not be killed. All other characters can be killed. If you try to kill her, she will get up and say:
"I'm sorry, I cannot die. I am bound to the Nexus".
You can then continue to interact with her as per normal.

The end of the game
After the defeat of the final Archstone demon the Maiden in Black will pull you down into the pit between the Archstones. You will not be able to upgrade your Soul level until the next play through.
After the fall, the Maiden in Black can be found conversing with the Old One and you are invited in for a final battle against the real King Allant. This is far from a tough fight and is over quick. Once you have defeated the real King, the Maiden in Black will lull the Old One back to slumber and suggest your return above.
At this point you have a choice. Return or attack the Maiden in Black.
If you return you are given the Maiden in Black Demon's Soul which can be convert into the Soulsucker spell by Yuria, the Witch or consumed for 60,000 Souls. You are also awarded the World Uniter's Trophy.
If you attack her, you are given the Beast Demon's Soul and a Red Eye Stone. The Beast Demon's Soul can only be consumed for 200,000 Souls.
And finally, after all this the game will start again - but things are a little tougher this time round.

Mephistopheles
Once you have reached Pure Black Character Tendency and freed Yurt, the Silent Chief Mephistopheles will appear on the second floor of Nexus. Freeing Yurt is a requirement, keeping him alive is not. In fact, if you wish to complete all of Mephistopheles request you will need to kill Yurt, the Silent Chief after you have defeated the Maneater.
A dark path
Mephistopheles will set you a number of assassinations and will award you for them. The tasks need to be performed in the order they are given, however if one of the characters is already dead the next assassination request will be given.
Once a character has been killed, that character will not appear until then next play through. Think about what that means before killing them.
The assassination list and rewards are:
- Saint Urbain and followers - Stone of Ephemeral Eyes
- Sage Freke, the Visionary and followers - Stone of Ephemeral Eyes
- Patches, the Hyena - Colorless Demon's Soul
- Biorr of the Twin Fangs - Colorless Demon's Soul
- Ostrava of Boletaria - Talisman of Beasts
- Yuria, the Witch - Foe's Ring
Strategy
A number of these characters can put up a fair fight. The easiest way to take out any of these assassinations is with the Dying ATK Power UP, Thief's Ring and a good bow at range in the Nexus.
If you are after the Foe's Ring in order to obtain the Rogue's Trophy plan to complete the final assassination just before the defeat of the final demon. It is also an extremely good idea to have obtained the Friend's Ring first! Once your Character Tendency has gone Black it can take a few games to get it back to Pure White.
After all the assassinations are complete you will have to fight Mephistopheles. While not too difficult she will cast Soulsucker against you if you are within range. If you still have Dying ATK Power UP enabled from defeating Yuria, approach Mephistopheles with a fast weapon or get ready to roll then attack once the conversation has ended. Once defeated, Mephistopheles will drop a Parrying Dagger, Epee Rapier, Gold Mask and the Ring of the Accursed - all of which can be obtained in other ways.
