In Demon's Souls you can upgrade your weapons and shields (except armor and crossbows). You will need certain materials to upgrade your equipment, as well as a capable blacksmith. There are two blacksmiths in this game.

Blacksmith Boldwin

Location: Nexus, next to Stockpile Thomas. Description: Provides basic upgrades.

Basic Upgrades

Blacksmith Ed

Location: Stonefang Tunnel (2-1), activate the rotating platform that leads to him. Description: Provides basic and advanced upgrades. Also, after defeating the Demon Flamelurker in 2-2, you will obtain the Red Hot Demon's Soul, give this to him and he will be able to upgrade your equipment using Demon's Souls. (For Ed to recive the Red Hot Demon's Soul, you must talk to him a few times, try walking away and talk until he ask you for the soul).

Advanced Upgrades

Note: Strength and Dexterity scale Physical Damage while Magic and Faith scale Magic Damage. In addition, weapons with Magic or Fire Damage can not have Turpentine, Sticky White Stuff, or Enchant Weapon Spells applied to them. Lastly it is important to realize not all upgrade paths are available from the outset. Many upgrade paths require a weapon of +3 or +6 quality first before they can be applied.

Bladestones

Prefix: Sharp

Weapons used on: Daggers, Straight Swords, Large Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Rapiers, Hammers, Fist Weapons, Spears, Pole Weapons

Notes: Good base Physical Damage. Small scaling with Strength very large scaling with Dexterity.

Clearstones

Prefix: Quality

Weapons used on: All upgradeable weapon types except Shields.

Notes: Highest base Physical Damage. Moderate scaling with Strength and Dexterity.

Cloudstones

Prefix: Dark

Weapons used on: Shields only.

Notes: Increases Magic Damage Cut percentage.

Darkmoonstones

Prefix: Crescent

Weapons used on: Daggers, Straight Swords, Large Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Rapiers.

Notes: Grants Magic Damage in addition to Mana Regen. Large scaling with Magic.

Dragonstones

Prefix: Dragon

Weapons used on: Straight Swords, Large Swords, Extra Large Swords, Axes, Large Axes, Hammers, Fist Weapons, Pole Weapons.

Notes: Grants high Physical and Fire Damage. Does not scale with stats.

Faintstones

Prefix: Blessed

Weapons used on: Straight Swords, Large Swords, Extra Large Swords, Axes, Large Axes, Hammers, Fist Weapons, Pole Weapons.

Notes: Grants Magic Damage in addition to HP Regen. Small scaling with Strength and Dexterity. Large scaling with Faith.

Greystones

Prefix: Crushing

Weapons used on: Straight Swords, Large Swords, Extra Large Swords, Axes, Large Axes, Hammers, Fist Weapons, Pole Weapons.

Notes: Good base Physical Damage. Very large scaling with Strength.

Mercurystones

Prefix: Mercury

Weapons used on: Daggers, Straight Swords, Large Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Rapiers, Hammers, Fist Weapons, Spears, Pole Weapons.

Notes: Good base Physical Damage. Adds Poison Damage to attacks. Small scaling with Strength. Moderate scaling with Dexterity.

Moonlightstones

Prefix: Moon

Weapons used on: Straight Swords, Large Swords, Extra Large Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Axes, Large Axes, Hammers, Fist Weapons, Spears, Pole Weapons.

Notes: Grants highest base Magic damage. Small scaling with Strength and Dexterity. Moderate scaling with Magic.

Marrowstones

Prefix: Fatal
Weapons used on: Daggers, Rapiers, Spears.
Notes: Low base Physical Damage. Adds Critical Damage. Small scaling with Strength. Large scaling with Dexterity.

Spiderstones

Prefix: Sticky

Weapons used on: Bows only.

Notes: Increases maximum range. Small scaling with Strength. Very large scaling with Dexterity.

Suckerstones

Prefix: Tearing

Weapons used on: Straight Swords, Large Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Hammers, Fist Weapons, Pole Weapons.

Notes: Low base Physical Damage. Adds Bleed Damage. Small scaling with Strength. Very large scaling with Dexterity.

Unique Upgrades

Unique upgrades require Colorless Demon's Souls and can only be upgraded to a maximum of +5, every upgrade requiring one Colorless Demon's Soul.
