Level Walkthrough

This level can get a bit confusing. You begin on the fifth level of a six floor prison. Upon leaving the starting cell you are going to needed pretty much directly across the floor to the far side. When you find the key, return to the start point and turn to the right, where you will find your first door.

On the sixth floor, you'll need to watch your step--there are pitfalls. There will be an open wooden door leading out into a balcony patrolled by an illithid. Kill him and on the other side you'll find a staircase to go down.

On the next floor down you'll find Freke the Sage. Can't do anything for him now. Keep going downstairs.

One the fourth floor you'll need to head to the other corner of the floor in order to keep going down. Do so.

On the third floor you'll find a single illithid down a long corridor. He's guarding Rydell. Keep going down.

Now you'll find a new set of keys on the second floor, but they won't be useful on the doors they're near. Head to the left of where you got the keys and you'll find a gate. This will lead you down to ground level. On this floor there' s a large Legion-like monster that shoots soul arrows or swings wildly with a dozen or so swords. Once you're past him, you'll find a room that you can leave in two ways. Heading to the far end on the left (watch the pitfall, it's the only thing that killed me in this run; very hard to see) will take you outside, where you can see a bridge you'll cross later. Take the estoc lying around and head back for the other exit.

This exit will take you round-about to the bridge you saw before. It'll activate a giant metal arbalest statue that will continuously shoot arrows in paired volleys. Grab the Warden's key and then avoid the bridge at all cost--even with high stamina you cannot block that much damage well enough to get to the end of the bridge intact.

Go back to where you got the 1st floor keys and you'll now be able to open the Warden-level gates. Kill the illithids and press on outside. Head down the stairs and towards the first watch tower. You'll find a fog door on ground level--going up allows you to nab some treasure (a silver catalyst). You may notice a figure on the opposite side that is surrounded by glowing gold circles. Remember him (if you can't shoot him from where you are--a bow is a good idea).

Through the fog door, you'll find the end of the bridge, and you'll be behind the arrow-launching statue. Turn it off and continue to the other tower. Go to the top, follow the rampart into the cathedral, and kill the glowing worshipper. Make sure you kill him or the boss here will only revive after she is killed!! Take the key and go back to Freke. Open his cell and return to the bridge.

The staircase to the boss fight is guarded by a black phantom with a crossbow, buckler, and dagger. The dagger is minimal damage unless she can get you from behind, but the crossbow will do over a hundred points of damage in a shot if you're not well armored, so watch yourself.

When you approach the gates, they'll open. Time for...

Boss Strategy

Fool's Idol

Attacks:

  • Soul Ray (real body)
  • Soul Arrow (copies)
  • stunning glyphs

Before fighting the Fool's Idol, make sure to kill the dregling in the upper balcony to prevent the boss from resurrecting endlessly. Also, when you first enter the room, kill all the dregling parishoners to make sure they are not obstacles when the boss battle starts. While fighting the boss, she will constantly teleport around the room and create copies of herself. You can spot the real one because it is the only one that uses Soul Ray instead of Soul Arrow, the copies are also the only ones that will show a health bar above their head when you are locked-on. Be sure to use the pillars in the room wisely to take cover the the boss's magical attacks. Also, kill any of the false Idols that might be in your way to reduce the amount of incoming attacks as your work your way to the real Idol. Pay attention to where any of the shining glyphs are formed on the ground, as stepping on them will cause minor damage and stun you temporarily, leaving you wide open to the magic attacks of the boss. Ranged attacks can help make the fight easier since you will be able to kill the false Idols and attack the real one while in the cover of the pillars. Also, the Dark Silver Shield is very helpful for this fight, since it is capable of blocking 100% of incoming magic damage. Overall, this boss is pretty easy.

Also, it should be noted that even though each false idol has its own life bar, you don't need to deplete it to zero. One hit will cause each of them to vanish (sometimes after a delay), until you deal damage to the real one again.

Boss Strategy

Maneater

Attacks:

  • charge attack
  • basic melee attacks
  • homing soul rays
  • sound blast

This boss can be somewhat difficult for first-time players. Its charge attack knocks characters back and if they are too close to the edge, they will be knocked off to thier deaths. It is best to fight this boss around the torch in the middle of the room since it has the largest area to maneuver and it allows you to hide from the magic attacks. When the first Maneater is almost dead, a second one will arrive. Fighting two at the same time can be very difficult, so it is important to finish off the first one as fast as possible. A good way to keep track of which Maneater is which, is to cutoff the tail of the one that is almost dead. Then you can focus on killing it first.

An alternate strategy is to maintain a large distance from Maneater on the walkways and shoot him with ranged attacks while he moves towards you, although this will expose you to his homing soul rays. For melee characters, the best time to attack Maneater is right after a charge attack, if he's still in range and not too close to the edge of the walkway. Another good time to attack is when Maneater's tail bites the main body, causing him to write in pain for a period of time. Because if this, try to avoid cutting off his tail while attacking him.

  • Glitch Note*

There is a glitch to make the fight a bit easier. If you have a bow with a long enough range you can actually shoot through the fog and kill the first Maneater being completely safe behind the fog. To do this walk up to the right side of the fog along the wall. You can clearly see the Maneater's glowing eyes. Be sure to hug the wall then fire away. This technique will take some time and about 150 or so heavy arrows. This way you only have to fight one Maneater and still reap the reward.

Level Walkthrough

The path to the boss is straightforward but there are a few tough enemies on the way. The Celebrity Vermin are easy enough but make sure not to get ambushed, and keep the camera focused around the corner at all times. The most you'll face at a time is two, so just make sure you don't get caught in their acid cloud, as a damaged weapon for the boss fight won't help. It might help to bring a few Ed's Grindstones just in case. Much more threatening, however, are the two Black Phantom Octopus Men. Keep an ear out for their bells and, with the Thief's Ring equipped, you can hit them with arrows before they know you're there. After the first hit, just make sure to stay away and dodge their spells, and keep firing arrows. You'll face one about half way up and another at the top. Also note that there is a crystal lizard at the top of the stairs.

Boss Strategy

Old Monk

Attacks:

  • Automatic Homing Soul Arrows
  • any attacks capable of the possessed phantom

When playing offline, this fight is extremely easy. The boss is little more than a Black Phantom npc with automatic Homing Soul Arrows. He will use 2 claw weapons, which are fairly weak and are poor at defending from attacks. Online however, there is a chance that the boss will be either a Black Phantom or even a Blue Phantom. Fighting an Old Monk possessed by a player is much more difficult, as the player's original HP will be increased and they will be capable of using any of their normal attacks and strategies. On top of that, players also get the automatic Homing Soul Arrows. An added difficulty in fighting player Old Monks is that they can still use any of their healing spells or healing items, drawing out the fight. As an incentive for players to be the Old Monk boss, killing another player as the Old Monk gives you the chance to get the Old Monk's hat, which increases magic damage.
