Overview
There is no single or set protagonist in Demon's Souls. Your player character is one that you create, one of many warriors who have traveled to Boletaria to relieve its people of their plight. Your character will have a host of different stats and attributes which you'll need to manage, some of which will dictate what equipment you can use to complete your warrior. Here you'll find a general run down of everything in regards to your player character, as well as links to where these subjects are detailed further.
Character Creation
Main article: Character Creation
Before beginning a new game, you'll need to create a character. This includes editing skin tone, hair, and a myriad of facial features in fine detail, as well as giving your warrior a name. All this is merely cosmetic and has no effect on the game, so have fun with it and create a character that you won't mind seeing for the next 20 or so hours. You'll also need to decide on an origin, which doesn't serve any purpose other than giving your hero some background and giving you a starting point on editing the appearance. Character creation also sees you choosing a class and gender, which do affect your game and are discussed below.
Anything you do in the character creator cannot be changed later, so make sure the character you've created is the one you want before confirming and beginning your game.
Gender
Main article: Gender
Choosing a gender obviously has a great effect on the look of your character, but also influences your gameplay as well. Certain armor can only be worn by a particular gender. Aside from gender-specific armor, choosing between a male or female won't have any other effect on your game, and there's only a handful of armor sets and pieces with such restrictions, so the gender you choose won't really have a huge impact on your game. Check out the main article on gender for the specifics on what's unique to each, to see if it's anything that might influence your decision.
Class
Main article: Class
Demon's Souls has 10 different classes for you to choose from when creating your character. Classes merely determine your starting stats and equipment. There are no items or equipment that only certain classes can use or magic that only certain classes can learn. Class affects only how your character starts, not what they might become; a barbarian can evolve into a master spellcaster or a magician can learn to wield extra large weapons while donning heavy armor. So when deciding a class, choose one with equipment that you'd like to use and stats that are geared towards your playing style. From there, you can build your stats however you like and utilize whatever equipment you acquire.
Check out the main article on classes for a listing of each of them and what they have to offer.
Stats
Main article: Stats
Your character will be host to eight different stats which you'll be able to raise as you level up through the game. These include Vitality, Intelligence, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Magic, Faith, and Luck. The values of each of these will determine your Soul Level.
Outside of these stats are a number of others which you won't directly raise when leveling. They include your attack power, defenses, and resistances. These stats are all derived from the main stats you determine and will also be greatly influenced by whatever you have equipped.
Your stats are the most essential part of your play style; equipment and magic are the other important factors, but your stats will decide first what equipment and magic you can make use of. Whether you want to play as a brute force melee fighter, a quick and precise ranger, or the ultimate spellcaster, you'll need to become very familiar with each of your stats to know where to start and how to raise them to effectively to attain your goal of play style.
