Old King Doran
From Wikidsouls
!!! SPOILER WARNING !!!
This page contains explicit steps on how to complete a specific objective and may ruin part of the fun for some players.
Old King Doran is located inside the Mausoleum in the Boletarian Palace section 1-1 and defends the sword Demonbrandt. You need to convince Old King Doran you are worthy enough to wield this sword in battle by fighting him.
If you manage to get Dorans health down about 25%, the Demonbrandt will appear and he request to stop the fight. He will do only low-level damage to you if you stop at this point. Continue the fight and he will do full damage and it will be to the death. Be warned however, his low-level damage attacks are fast and can be one-hit kills to many player set-ups.

Getting access to Old King Doran
A Red Eye Knight with a Shield and Spear guards the area outside the Mausoleum, which is locked. You can encounter this Red Eye Knight very early on in the game. He is located not far from the very first Blue Eye Knight you fight. On your first play through this Knight can be hard to beat until you have upgraded a few soul levels. Old King Doran is also pretty tough, but is open to a few exploits.
If you are having issues defeating the Red Eye Knight, then you are not ready for the Old King, try again later.
Either way you can not get into the Mausoleum until you have the Mausoleum Key, which is held by Ostrava of Boletaria. You can either kill Ostrava for the key and shift your Character Tendency towards black or wait for him to give it you. As Demonbrandt gives a dmg bonus to white Character Tendency, you may want to wait for Ostrava of Boletaria to give you the key. See the Ostrava of Boletaria page for more details.
Once you have the Mausoleum Key, simply approach the doors and select the open option. Old King Doran is standing in front of you.
If you have the Boletarian Palace in Pure Black World Tendency two Black Phantom Blue Eye Knights will appear as you approach the Red Eye Knight. This makes things a little harder.
Strategy
Old King Doran wears the Ancient King's suit of armor and the Eternal Warrior's Ring. This in itself makes him pretty tough. Now add a Northern Regalia to the mix, which he can swing pretty fast.
Fire based attacks do less damage than physical or magic, however he is weak to Plague. Rotten Arrows, the Baby's Nail or the spell Death Cloud are good choices to infect him.
If you just want to get your hands on Demonbrandt, you only need to knock about 25% off his health. As you approach Doran, he will start to talk. You should be able to get behind him and line-up a backstab while he talks. If you are lucky enough another backstab or two as he gets up may be enough - depending or weapons and skill levels.
Alternatively, hit and roll and run works well. Non fire based Weapon Enchantments work well. Sticky White Stuff and the Enchant Weapon spell will add magic damage to your weapons. The Curse Weapon spell is also a good choice, so long as you can handle the health drain that is.
Ranged based attacks will also work, but can take a while and a lot of arrows. Equip Thief's Ring and enable Dying ATK Power UP to speed things up a lot. Once he comes after you, run back towards the small room where the crossbow soldier was and wait for Doran to head back into the Mausoleum, then repeat. Watch his health bar for an idea of just how much damage each hit is doing, then take a guess if you have enough items to finish the job.
To the death
If you fight Old King Doran after the yield request, it is to the death. He will now use both hands and his hits are heavy. Once defeated he will drop the Ancient King's suit of armor and the Eternal Warrior's Ring. You will still be able to pick-up Demonbrandt after the fight.
The World Tendency for the Boletarian Palace will shift towards black and so will your Character Tendency if you defeat Old King Doran.
