How to obtain a Pure World Tendency

In Demon's Souls, World Tendency can affect a number of game play elements. For a break down on what exactly changes, see the Tendency page. This page however will guide you in the process of achieving Pure White World Tendency (PWWT) or Pure Black World Tendency (PBWT) for one or many of the five game worlds.
Obtaining PWWT is a lot harder than PBWT, but to reach either you need to start the game in offline mode. This is the only way to get either Pure World Tendency. For the reason behind this, see the notes below.
The steps for a Pure White World
- Start the game in offline mode before you have defeated any major Demon's in the area you want to make Pure White.
- If you are in Human Form, find a high point in the Nexus and jump off. You should play the game area in Soul Form as dying in Human Form will shift the World Tendency towards Black by 30%. Dying in the Nexus has no effect on World Tendency.
- Enter the game world and defeat the first Major Demon, then return to the Nexus. The World Tendency for that area should now be more white than before. The trip back to the Nexus is important because that is what will register the change in World Tendency. You are also back in Human Form, so find a high point in the Nexus and jump off again.
- Enter the same world at the defeated Demon's Archstone. Progress through and defeat the next major Demon. Return to the Nexus. The game world is now nearly Pure White. Again, find a high point and jump.
- Enter the game world yet again at the last defeated Demon's Archstone. Get through the level, defeat the boss, return to the Nexus.
- You should now have PWWT for the select world. If you do not, then the game world was too Black to start with. You will have to wait for the next play through. World Tendency is carried over after you beat the game to the next play through.
If you go back online now, the World Tendency will re-set. Make sure you do what you wanted PWWT for in the first place before going back online.
Exceptions to the rules above:
- All Archstone Demons will shift World Tendency 45% towards white, except for the Boletarian Palace Demons. They will only shift World Tendency 30% towards white, however both Dragons are also worth 30%. This means you will need to defeat 3 bosses and at least 1 Dragon or all 4 Demon's to achive PWWT of the Boletarian Palace.
- The Vanguard in Shrine of Storms will not shift World Tendency when defeated.
- Killing the Human Form of Executioner Miralda, Old King Doran, Scirvir, the Wanderer, Satsuki, Selen Vinland or the Blue Phantom Lord Rydell will shift the World Tendency about 90% towards black, even if they pick a fight with you. This is important to remember as a number of characters will start a fight with you. If you defeat the ones that do not start a fight, your Character Tendency will also shift towards black.
The steps for a Pure Black World
Getting a world Pure Black is fairly straight forward. You simply need to die while in Human Form in the desired area, then return to the Nexus. This will shift the World Tendency for the area you are in 30% towards Black. Most Worlds have a nice high point near one of the Archstones. Also, this is a good chance for you to try some game play method you may not otherwise attempt.
After you die you must return to the Nexus to register the death. If you use a Stone of Ephemeral Eyes after you have died, then die again without returning to the Nexus there will only be a shift of 30% towards black when you do return, not 60% as you may think.
So, be in Human Form, enter the area you want Black, die, return to the Nexus. Repeat this about 5 to 7 times depending on just how White the area is to start with.
If the game area you want Black is mostly White you can go online. This will re-set all areas to the Global World Tendency.
Killing the Black Phantom version of Executioner Miralda, Scirvir, the Wanderer, Satsuki, Selen Vinland or Lord Rydell will shift the World Tendency about 90% towards White. These Black Phantoms will attack once they see you, so either be ready for a fight or go around them. If you defeat one of these Black Phantoms, be sure to take out the Primeval Demon as well before you return the to Nexus.
What happens when you play online
When you play online you are playing in the Global World Tendency (GWT) of the game. Most of the time the GWT is between 50% Black and 50% White World Tendency. Defeating a Demon online will shift the GWT towards white. However as soon as another person is killed in human form, the GWT will shift towards black.
As you can imagine, this leads to a mostly Neutral World Tendency, most of the time.
If you have a PWWT or PBWT and go online, your local World Tendency will be re-set to that of the Global. Do what you wanted PWWT or PBWT for in the first place, then go back online.
