Base level weapon details

A bladeless, thick mass of iron used for smashing. The ancient excavators of Stonefang are said to have created it to face dragons. It is imbued with a spell to protect the wielder from fire.

Because of its immense weight, blacksmiths joke that it can scarcely be called a sword.

It is worth mentioning that backed by high strength, fully upgraded to +5, and supported by weapon buff's such as the spell Cursed Weapon, the Dragon Bone Smasher (commonly summarized as the DBS) is in fact the hardest hitting weapon in Demon's Souls.

Do not be put off by the Strength level requirement of 30 as you can use both hands to use this weapon. This will bring the Strength requirement down to 20. The bigger issue will be the weight of it and the effect this will have your Equipment Burden.

Can be found ...

The Dragon Bone Smasher is located in Stonefang Tunnel, section 2-3. This is the area with the Dragon God boss. However to reach the sword you will need to have Stonefang Tunnel in Pure White World Tendency. Once you have White World Tendency the rocks blocking the path to the Dragon Bone Smasher will be removed and you will simply be be able to walk in and pick it up. Be warned however as it does have a weight of 20.

Upgrade information

The Dragon Bone Smasher can be upgraded with Colorless Demon's Souls. Each upgrade will increase the Fire Resistance value and the physical damage.

Do not be fooled by the seemingly poor B Stats Bonus on Strength. Compared to the Dozer Axe for example, this Stat Bonus is a blessing for later in the game. At a Strength level of about 30 the DBS will start to do more damage than the Dozer Axe when held with two hands.

Notes

Rationale

With 200 Base attack Power, an Armour Boost and slow attack recovery, the Dragon Bone Smasher may not seem like it's worth to use for any other class than Barbarian. For Barbarians it is a Godsend however: It makes up for their lack of powerful armour that other classes get and can actually be used effectively due to Barbarian's high endurance and strength. However it is still VERY slow, and hitting with it can be difficult if you do not time yourself right or are not aware of it's range. This weapon is an acquired taste.

General Strategy

The Dragon Bone Smasher is all about knockdowns, if you hit and enemy with it's attacks they will generally be hit to the floor (Depends on Enemy and Attack) and fly back a few feet, letting you attack them again to cause another knockdown and create a chain until you run out of stamina. This does not work on Invading Black Phantoms, NPC Black Phantoms are affected however. Once that happens quickly retreat until your stamina refills holding your shield up or healing and make sparing attacks when you believe the enemy will be open, if you hit: Knockdown Chain them. If not: Quickly Roll away and try again.

Boss Strategy

This weapon is a Boss Killer, plain and simple. It does so much Damage and the Combo's damage can stack up like wildfire on some bigger enemies, but make sure they are vulnerable! On mobile bosses like the Flamelurker or Maneater for example it is much better to use a Hit-and-Run tactic of two-handed heavy attacks each usually doing 500 - 800 damage a pop. After attacking it is important that you retreat to let your stamina regain otherwise you will be left open to one of the many bosses powerful attacks. Roll, Roll, Roll!

Buffs

Enchant Weapon 100% of the way. It beefs up this weapon's attack like a beast, especially if your magic stat is particularly high. This will also give another form of attacking that's different than physical, magic damage. Otherwise, use Sticky White Stuff, Turpentine and Black Turpentine to your heart's content along with Enchant weapon to get the most out of this baby.

It is also possible to use the Clever Rat's Ring and the Morion Blade plus Enchant weapon or other weapon buffs to boost this weapon's attack to over 1500. Be warned however as this will require you to have your HP below 30% and no shield.
