Keep in mind that only 3% of people on social games actually pay for anything.

I've always wondered: how popular is SMT/Persona in Japan compared to Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy? I'm guessing it's less niche, but is it something that every gamer over there knows of the same way every gamer here knows about, say, God of War?

Not sure about that. I believe SMT was more popular as a franchise in Japan during the mid 1990s.

SMT1 & 2 are considered all-time classics in Japan, like FFVI and CT are here.
I believe as a franchise, it's in the top 10 still.

The Persona series are becoming more and more popular compared to Shin Megami Tensei if.. back then. Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are more like shounen games whereas the Megaten series have an older crowd. I am not entirely sure though..

I wouldn't say in the top 10 anymore. There are a lot more franchises out there now than there were in SMTs heyday. That being said, it's still a well recognized name. Kinda like Ys.

This is pretty cool, though I really wish I could try out Persona Mobile Online.
