Catherine breaks Atlus sales record, exceeds highest expectations!
They haven't revealed exact numbers, but I'm super pumped that it's doing well for them. They certainly took a risk on putting out such a niche title and it's nice to see it pay off.
Now all that's left is to funnel all that money into Persona 5 development.
The game has shipped the most units at launch of any Atlus game in the company's history.

Quote:
"Catherine has exceeded our highest expectations," said Tim Pivnicny, VP of Sales and Marketing at Atlus, in a statement given to IGN. "It released last week to tremendous critical acclaim and fan response, bolstered by the release of a demo a couple weeks prior, and continues to generate discussion among fans for its mature themes, engrossing subject matter, and frantic, challenging gameplay.
"It is fitting, then, that Catherine can boast the largest launch in the 20-year history of Atlus, and continues to see strong sales at retail."

It's kind of a shame. Those records didn't do anything to anyone, and then Catherine was all, "I MUST BREAK YOU." Poor records.

All this senseless violence! When will it ever end.
But yeah, this surprised me. Just goes to show that I am way out of touch with what people buy. I had thought Catherine would be even more niche than the rest of Atlus' games.

With the attention it was getting, it's no shock it's doing so well. Congrats Atlus!

So glad it's doing well! I hope it continues to sell. I'm all for Persona 5, but I also hope these sales encourage Atlus to make more games like Catherine.

I said this in another thread before the game released, but it bears repeating. Because this game deals with relationships, more women than usual likely bought it. The 'Do you ever want to get married' YouTube campaign was a brilliant piece of marketing to this end. The packaging also is quite eye-catching. All this means is that Catherine 2 is likely imminent.
Persona captures a bit of that same dynamic with social links; the female demo loves it, hence the popularity over the mainline SMT games.
This is mere conjecture based on marketing experience, of course.

Hmmmm really? I'd be curious to put the numbers up against Demon Souls' numbers. Is it the largest shipping Atlus game or the largest shipping game that you have published?
Not that I'm not happy to see the statement being made as after Demon Soul's launch I noticed that Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga and the Cursed Crusade both followed in the same vein. I was starting to wonder if niche games were being viewed as unprofitable for Atlus or if the lure of a different type of game was stiering the company in a different direction.
Either way I have enjoyed Catherine so far and wouldn't mind seeing more games along the same line in one way or another. Just keep the story interesting

It's our biggest launch of a game, meaning the most initial sales. Demon's Souls is still on top overall, but it's had a lot longer than a week to reach its lofty position.

I work at Best Buy and all Xbox copies of the game have sold out at my store. That was a sight to behold.

We don't bring things to Europe; we only offer them. Luckily for you, Deep Silver has taken that offer and will be doing the bringing.

I foresee this as a double-edged sword for Atlus. Expect news organizations to pull crap outta nowhere about the game.

I think, if anything, Catherine just shows that "niche" should not be underrated or tossed to the wayside.

The only role of news organizations is to scare old people and baby boomers drifting into retirement. Even if they bothered to sensationalize Catherine based on its sexual themes, they'd only be helping sell more copies.
Because that's how it always happens. Mortal Kombat started it all and its on its ninth iteration now.

Unfortunately, those are still the people making all the world's important decisions. Misinformed aging people who remember when color teevee was a novelty. Attempting to make decisions about the computerized, interconnected world.

Yay for Catherine, really glad it's doing well. I have yet to receive my Deluxe Editions, but it's fine, the wait will be worth it.
Oh and now you folks at Atlus do have a good excuse to ask for a salary increase. Atlus' Big Boss won't be able to say "you see, business isn't going well... bla bla bla"

Not surprised at all. Had plenty of press/hype going in and they don't say "Sex Sells" because it doesn't.

I got this game as a birthday present and I really liked personally I was interested in this game the minute I saw Vincent in P3P. Congratulations on your success.

That's not the role of news organizations. The role of news organizations is to be rolling in cash, and you only get that my forcing people to tune in for bad news. It just so happens that certain groups are easier to incite fear amongst. The news isn't serving those groups, though, they're preying on them.

There's a reason why FOX is still alive today. Although, I admit, I would be sad if it died... Means I wouldn't have anymore Fringe. :<

I could say the same about Comcast, though. If they weren't around some people couldn't get the 'Current' channel. Although, it's a bit different, I think you get my meaning. XD

Exactly. It'd be like a double edge sword with both edges on the same side, for maximum kill power.
