wow, I had to stop reading halfway though that blog.. Granted I'm not as big a fan of the PS3 as I was back when PSX or the PS2 came out. But the way people are reacting is getting to much.

I think I'll just wait till MGS4 hits before doing any updates.. Since none of the new features are things I would actively use anyways.

Does the console need updates every so (or every new game you buy) often like the PSP?

Raithgar
11-09-2007, 06:22 PM
I'm not 100% sure, but I would beleive so.. Its the one thing Sony can do to put a crimp in the homebrew scene.

Microsoft is also planning on a similar setup for the 360 (Dashboard updates on new games starting someinte in 08 ). But they have it more labled as "for those who do not have internet access and want the updates".

Microsoft is now forcing Silver members to wait a week before downloading new demos and trailers. Another "benefit" to being a Gold member.

New PS3 update is live. Features including voice masking so playing online is that much more annoying few people that actually use headsets, and Blu-Ray Profile 1.1 support for feature movies like Batman Begins which have yet to be released on BR because of lack of PiP and online support, and Divx support...

At least they are bringing one of the features I actually liked from the HD-DVD format (internet connectivity for extra content)..

Before Paramount had to scrap there HD-DVD plans, I know Cloverfield was "supposed" to have some kind of bonus interactive content (via net connection?).. Rumor had it, that it was being cut from the BR release. Maybe now it will still be on the table.

PS3 firmware 2.20 update now live.

From Sony:

The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system.

We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0.

Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.

You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. I

In addition, you can now display subtitles when viewing DivX files. Resume Play - begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.

Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.

The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster.

In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.

Sayckeone
03-24-2008, 06:49 PM
What a worthless update.

Hopefully, with the ability to now save #### from the net, people will start making triple programs and ####. Someone needs to make one that allows you to play imports and ####.

Resume is pointless.

SlaughterX
03-25-2008, 08:02 AM
Yeah because nothing every comes up while you're watching a movie that makes you have to turn it off and go do something else...

Sayckeone
03-25-2008, 08:54 AM
No, nothing really does, since I tend to watch movies later on at night when there are little to no distractions. Even so, it's not like it's impossible to get back to that point any other way. While it's a nice feature, it isn't necessary.

The best part about this update is possibly being able to save Lost eps directly to my PS3.

Futomimi

Gillian Seed

And you can pay for 4 years of Live after the price difference of the two consoles in Europe. Even with out paying for Live it's a better service than PSN. Even offline the 360 is a better console than the PS3. :)

But anyway enough thread derailment, I'm sorry all PS3 owners have to look forward to now are firmware updates and crappy second life rip offs. :)

Ok I am done now.

Yeah second life is pretty crappy I think in my honest opinion Sony should have tried something MOAR original like the Xbox 360's up coming Mii Avatars (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/06/15/rumor-avatars-are-microsoft-take-on-miis/#comments). :)

BUZZ! Quiz TV

I dunno, my ps3 does a lot more than my 360, it can check the internet, it can play games online, it has free icons and wallpapers (what kind of company charges you for ####ing avatars, really?) a built in hard drive, and can run linux and thus be a pretty kickass media center if you put your time into it.

Having both, I see no reason to pick up any multiplat releases for 360. I had live for 2 years, worst 120 or so I've ever spent on nothing, peer to peer multiplayer? Host has a big advantage because of lag inconsistencies? Wait a ####ing week for demos? How is that better than free PSN?
Bull####. If there were dedicated servers it would be one thing, but it is just a rip off. And again, charging/delaying demos? giving you the ability to play promotional material on time is a perk? FFS.

I do not doubt MS is researching ways to charge for every second the system is on. Oh yeah, and my first 360 died, making me scared of playing my current for long periods of time less it suffers the same fate.

Sayckeone
07-01-2008, 02:32 AM
^It also has a built in blu-ray player. PS3 is more expensive than the 360 for a reason. Right out of the box, the package as a whole is comprised of a hell of a lot more than the 360.

Sei
07-01-2008, 02:48 AM
^ True, and there are other little things I neglected to mention like the ability to pick up any compatible hard drive at market price and put it in my PS3 against having to pay whatever ridiculous price for Ms propietary stuff with the 360. Let's just say that one wont be getting upgraded.

Or having built in wireless, against a overpriced wireless adapted, or a built in HDMI out (which my 360 does not have and I'd love to have). Or a built in rechargeable battery in the controller as opposed to having to get a battery pack and a cord for it. You know, the little things.

Speaking strictly system wise, I think the PS3 is Eons ahead, and I have had my 360 for 2 years or so now. It's just a matter of time before it catches up in games, but saleswise it seems to be heating up. Will have to see how MGS 4 boosted system sales.

There really isn't much left that needs to be done to the 360... I would like the ability to fast forward and rewind songs, I dunno how we didn't have this feature whe the original Xbox came out, it's annoying sometiems to say the least. But other than that trying to fauly Microsoft for not releasing a minimal firmware update while trying to appaud Sony for finally releasing some that will make it close to what the 360 has been doing since day one is silly. The built in wireless is slightly over rated. if you're going to stream any kind of media to either console you'll want a wired connection anyway.

The only use my PS3's wireless sees is remote play to my PSP.

The hard drive thing for x360 owners is a serious problem. That's a big mistake MS made. I just popped a 250Gb into my PS3 for less than the retail cost of a 20Gb xbox drive.

Esoteric
07-01-2008, 03:25 AM
^True, but most people tend to connect their PS3 using the wireless connection because of location in the house. It doesn't run that slow through wireless, either. I've used both wired and wireless, and I am very happy with the fact that there is a wireless ability.

The avatars have already been debunked as a hoax

Who exactly debunked the rumor as a hoax? Source please? Last time I checked (http://kotaku.com/5016931/microsoft-leaked-concepts-may-or-may-not-be-real-products) (several news sites reported the same) Microsoft didn't exactly rule out anything.

We regularly test all kinds of concepts in market research with our Xbox community," said a Microsoft representative. " These may or may not be real products in development or ever be released to consumers.

The company declined to comment on the individual leaks or provide any specific confirmation or denial.

But other than that trying to fauly Microsoft for not releasing a minimal firmware update while trying to appaud Sony for finally releasing some that will make it close to what the 360 has been doing since day one is silly.

You seem confused here. Maybe you're thinking of certain NeoGAF thread? Or maybe some board over on 1up? Because I just checked the last two pages of this thread, and NO ONE HERE WAS APPLAUDING SONY FOR 2.40.

And also trying to ridicule Sony for implementing its firmware update to PSN which is "FREE" is also highly ridiculous. If Sony was nickel and dimming me for online fees and a bunch of other garbage I would definitely be pissed for receiving these features so late.

SlaughterX
07-01-2008, 10:09 PM
So this firmware update is pretty disappointing. No games even let you use custom sound tracks. I dunno which games feature "trophies", but it sounds like a pretty useless features just like gamer points, the only exception is that they don't take advantage of every, or even most games, so there seems to be little point. I was more satisfied with the update that gave DTS-HD support for Blu-Ray movies...

Raithgar
07-01-2008, 10:15 PM
The update for Pain isn't available yet, but Super Stardust HD's updates had the trophies patch.

So far I've gotten 3, and will finish of SS HD tomorrow (turns out my bro in law beaten my high score.. need to fix that). You get the traditional pop up + sound effect when you earn a trophy.

In a way I'm glad you are forced to replay your games, Since if this was to award players via scanning a save file.. People would be prone to abuse it by downloading game saves from various sites (a problem that took MS a long time to fix).

They acknowledge the firmware update has problems and pulled it immediately. Instead they could have easily ignored it (http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=25101615&page=5) and put the blame on the consumer, but they didn't.

Sony respect +1.

^ I like Gears of War, Loathe Xbox live. Had it for 2 years. Finally got tired of paying for nothing. Also unimpressed with having to call MS to cancel and being unable to unlink my CC from my live account. It's just too shady and devoid of value, and peer to peer multiplayer sucks. Had a few chainsaw/shotgun duels decided by host advantage.

That #### is fine in a free service. One that charges? I want dedicated servers.

Delaying marketing materials for silver accounts shows the black hole of value that live is. There is nothing they are willing to give to Gold members, and there is nothing that Silver accounts can not have, so they delay ####ing promotional materials? You ####ting me?

Vincent Alexander
07-02-2008, 03:55 PM
Ya, dedicated servers would be nice. But when I'm in a game and I notice horrible lag, I simply leave. I do it with every online game. The host does have an advantage a lot in stuff like Gears, but that is why you zero that whore out and go for him first...or get him on your team. Or host.

I wish MGS4 had chat capabilities like Gears of War. It is so simple to talk in Gears (simple in MGS4 too, I know). I can't stand playing an online game and not talking with someone...anyone. I gotta have that strategy where I can tell someone where the enemy is or whatever, or just randomly bull#### about stuff. And if people don't like it, that is what the ignore button is for. OKay...just sort-of rambling. I'm waiting for my 13 month card for Xbox Live to come in so I can get on Gears again. I miss it.

Of course, DtR, we still have lots of MGO to play.

I guess I gotten lucky, so far no problems with the 2.4 update.. and already acheived level 2 on the trophy collection.

Well, back when I had live not everyone had a headset. I was one of the people without actually, not cause I didn't have one, but because the level of conversation was usually on the stupid side.

Did quite a bit of Halo 2 and 3, too.

Don't even have a blue tooth headset.

My blue tooth sounds like #### on the PS3. Same with my old , normal PS2 headset. I wish there was a way to crank the volume way up on whatever you use since I can barely hear anyone. I kinda hear people better just going through my center speaker. Wonder if my headsets are just cheapies or other people are using headsets that are cheapies....or both.

On that note, I really hate the 360 headset. It feels like they went for the cheapest plastic/foam they could find, and the worst possible configuration. I liked the original Xbox's one better.

^Vince, have you set the volume of your headset to 10? MGO has like 3 settings in the options, and you need to set the volume to all 3 to 10. I can hear people like Darren and Vyers just fine.

Ya, all my settings are maxed out. My problem is that the first year playing guitar, I didn't realize that even if it didn't sound loud, an amp right next to your ear (literally 2 feet away) will kill your hearing. So my hearing is, quite literally, ####. I just wish they had a volume setting of 11 or something for those who like it a little loud, or need it a little loud.

And I don't remember the old Xbox headset. People actually used headsets on that thing? I can't really say I like or hate the 360 or PS3 headset. They're all kinda the same. Ya know...place to speak into, thing that goes over head, all that jazz.

Wow, for once SONY comes through like champ. NOW, they deserve applaud.

They acknowledge the firmware update has problems and pulled it immediately. Instead they could have easily ignored it (http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=25101615&page=5) and put the blame on the consumer, but they didn't.

Sony respect +1.

Nice spin, when you gonna send in that app for some PR spokesman?

^Well I was hoping you could use your position at Microsoft to put in a good word for me?

I don't know why, but I lol'd at this picture. DTR, you find the most random stuff.

That dude looks really serious about what he's clapping at.

Why would I be talking to Sony about anything? I prank call Kutaragi every now and then, but I stopped doing that after realizing he never hangs up, must be a lonely guy... Once he even called me back, had to block the number...

The only problem I have is trying to download the Super Stardust HD 4.0 update. My router resets exactly when the download tries to start and ####. DNS error, blah blah, just clogged servers I hope.

^ I saw a post at another forum where someone had the same sort of issue. All they did was delete the game and download it again. They are now enjoying it with everything working fine.

I had the same problem at first. Fix your settings, and I don't mean volume.

No problems with 2.40 for me yet. I've heard that the reasons for the problems was caused by a bad download. The people who have reported problems didn't have the download of 2.40 complete and reach 100% which corrupted the file resulting in their PS3's getting bricked. Just a rumor now of course, could be something entirely different. Kinda freaked me out yesterday when I first read about it. I downloaded it right at midnight after I finished up playing MGO for the night.

I got my first trophy. No problems for me either. I just re-downloaded SSD HD and that fixed my issue.

2.42 is up for the PS3. The purpose of this update is to piss me off really badly. I can't play anything online until I download the update, and I can't download the update because I keep getting error messages. And Sony's comment about this update is basically "It does stuff." They need to fix it so I can play online without having to download a ####ty update that doesn't ####ing work. I guess I'll go try to download it for another half an hour now.
