How to enchant weapon?

Do I need to hold the catalyst in the left hand instead of a shield or just have it in one of the 2 left hand slots? I feel nekkid without my shield...

The catalyst can be in either slots of the left hand. Just wear your shield normally, and when you're ready to cast, swap to the catalyst, cast, and switch back to the shield.

Yeh, i found it hard too find out myself too :> Make sure u dont equip a weapon that already does magic damage as they cannot be enchanted by magic.
