Hi,
I am considering buying Demon's Souls but I would hate to finally jump into the game only to find out that the servers are close to being shut down.
Has Atlus talked about this and is there a chance that it will extended?

no need to worry about that for quite some time, in my opinion.
Demonīs souls might not have sold millions and millions of copies, but it has sold better then expected and itīs still selling both in NA and Japan so i think servers will be around for quite some time.

I hope that is the case, I have tried the game at a friend's house and thought it was cool....I'm just worried about once I get the game, the servers are gone and I would have to play offline...I want to play with friends & get trophies :)

doubt they'll shut it down, the retarded server will most likely explode by itself first.

let's be real - the servers are up. And chances are exceedingly good that you'll move on to your next "zomg" game in the next month - most people get bored of games and move on in 1-2 months, unless the game is an mmo... and sometimes, even then.
so the real question you have is, will the servers be up for the next 1-2 months. Or the next 6 months. And the answer is yes.

As the best version was just released, there is high possibility that server would not be shut down in the next 6 months (at least for Asian server).
However, whenever server is shut down, it is the time I sell DS disc to second hand market. I think many fans especially hard core guy in this forum already accept the truth that the sold copies (about 0.5 million copies [maximum] around the world) are just not high enough to maintain server for long time. DS is definitely very fun game, but just not for most people to be able to play.

You know, it's idiocy like this that leads to multiple "zomg is server gonna go bye bye?" threads in as many days.
First of all, SUPPOSE the servers do go down? what do you lose?
-Not being summoned as blue phantom (which happens anyway)
-Not being invaded (oh noes)
-no blood stains, msgs, or random white ghosts (after ng, who cares?)
...that's pretty much it. The remainder of the gameplay is still there.
Secondly - game with online component is out for 6 months, and servers are nuked in less than a year (or even two): that's called PR suicide. See 'Hellgate London'.
And lastly - your grand master plan is to sell your DS disc on "the second hand market" WHEN the servers go down?
...to WHO? What idiot is going to buy a used copy of DS with no online play? Hardcore players... who already have the game anyway??
If you had nothing new or useful to say, then keep your pessimistic genius to yourself

It's worth noting that the 500,000 NA sales (almost 700,000 worldwide) that Demon's Souls achieved is From's record, exceeding Enchanted Arms by almost 200,000 sales. Expect the servers to stay up for a while. AFAIK, Armored Core 4 and Chrome Hounds still have their servers; Sega wasn't forced to shut them down because they only sold ~200k copies in NA. Why would Atlus have to shut down the Demon's Souls's server, when it doubled those figures?

Buy the game and play...if the servers go down anytime in the next year..so what...more is the pity if you dont...so get on it....make yourself two charcters, one a strict pvp build and another you want to level up to the point of online being irrelevant...you will have plenty to do and then some...and for the record, i spent months making mistakes and 'wasting time and resources' in this game and only recently focused a build and im having just as much if not more fun..and i play offline at first to get tendency event easier..so BUY IT

Buy it!!! It's true that they aren't forced to mantain the servers beyond April or May, but don't expect them to shut the servers down.
At least it's what I'm expecting since my PS3 died three days ago. Starting again!!!!! It's not that bad -I was in my first play through- but anyway ....

I doubt the servers will close anytime soon the game is still 60$. The most they will do is downgrade the severs maybe.

Server's are probably exceedingly cheap to keep up. When you co-op or invade, I believe that's your own PS3 local hosting. So the servers are really just matchmaking and controlling the messages players leave for each other. Its not like they are hosting with dedicated servers that takes 1000x as much CPU/memory/bandwidth. Keeping a server up probably costs an almost insignificant amount of money, I wouldn't be surprised if its in the hundreds of dollars.

Currently the online component of the game is the only reason why I am still playing it. I expect the servers to be online until the release of Demon's Souls 2 at the very least. Otherwise I will be a very unhappy customer.

I don't. However, I do hope they will make a sequel. If they don't ever make a sequel, then I'd hope they don't take down the servers for a very long time...

How do you know there will be a Demon's Souls 2?
I don't know, the fact that Demon's Souls is now the highest selling From Software game ever made and they just saw fit to re-release it in japan in a "greatest hits" form PLUS pair that with the knowledge that other From games that sold less got sequels (armored core, king's field, shadow tower) tells me the odds are pretty darn good.

Even if is the same gameplay with new worlds, I would still buy/import it. This would be an easy win for From Software as they could re-use the same engine, just create some new worlds and weapons. Knowing that the fanbase would go and get it straight away, they'd be crazy not to be even thinking about it...

Basically, you hope the powers that be are paying attention to their forums and will give you what you want. Good luck with that. My guess is this is the last Demon's Souls for many reasons that I won't go into.
I like the game. I really do. It just has so many obvious flaws that were not dealt with.

Not sure what you mean here? I hate to tell you this but if you sell 1mil copies worldwide you are basically going to get a sequel in today's gaming market, period. Your reviews and critical reception could even be lukewarm and it won't matter. DS is up to around 700k world wide and was named Game of the Year by one of the major online gaming sites, we now even have a statement from Sony America saying it was a mistake not to publish it themselves.
I don't know they might change the game a bit obviously but the odds of it getting a sequel in some form at this point are reaching no brainer level. As in it would be stupid not to do one.

It seems that From Software were bloody minded in the first place and refused to lower the difficulty for Sony. Now Sony state that it should have been a 1st party title in the first place. I think they will do a sequel but I'm not sure who will take "ownership" of it. As long as the combat system is largely untouched, I'll be getting it.

yeah i wont realy care who does the game. as long as itīs demonīs souls iīll be getting the sequel and in all honesty, if the sequel will be getting the in house treatment by Sony, then chances are the game will be even better.
Or who knows, it might even end up with Sony picking up from as a 1 party studio, they rarely make games for other platforms as it is and Demonīs souls is a good enough IP to warrant such a move, i doubt from would be that expensive to be honest and Sony has proven, again and again, that they like fromīs "niche" games.

At the moment, for the USA no one knows. We only assume Atlus owns or has ties with the USA server because they're able to modify world tendency events.
As for the asian servers, it's probably Sony no doubt. It's stated in the EULA when you sign on.
For the topic, I dunno what to say except "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Doing so might give the sony guys some ideas.

the difficulty is what MAKES the game IMO I mean the only thing I would have them change in terms of difficulty would be the very first lvl 1-1, as that is where everyone I talk to seems to get aggrivated and nvr touch the game again... but other then that the game is simply amazing and I'm glad it wasn't tuned down in difficulty and hope the sequal if they make one isn't tuned down too much either

All I will say is this. Sony went to From Software, not the other way around. They also said flat out "We want you to make a game like King's Field for the PS3." King's Field is a From Software property, they made it, they own it, it is 100% theirs. In the US it might not be that big but in Japan it was pretty well known, at least well enough to get 4 entries into the main series, two PSP spinoff games, a mobile phone game, and the "Block Box" Edition which was a true "collectors" edition that had all four King's Fields plus a ton of extra stuff.
Whats my point here? It is simple, Sony wanted From Software to make this game from the get go. It is a From Software game. Even if it was made at Sony's order, they run the servers, and they footed the bill they still had almost no involvement in making the actual game. So if someone other than From Software makes the sequel that we will hopefully get then it will cease to be Demon's Souls. It will be some other game that just coincidentally has the same name. Also Sony's track record with RPG's is abysmal to say the least so no I don't want them to "take over".
