View Full Version : Has anyone played White Knight Chronicles International Edition (PS3)?

Metacritic.com has given White Knight Chronicles International Edition a metascore of 65 which is quite disappointing especially when you realize that this is a game from LEVEL-5. Admittedly, this is LEVEl-5’s first game on the PS3 and Sony’s platform is known to be rather unfriendly when it comes to developing HD games even now after all of these years (Bayonetta anyone?). It seems that it’s not just the platform as most reviews on the net claim that the game isn’t all that memorable. IGN stated that the gameplay is unfair with enemies that hit you with close range attacks regardless of distance and that the player will spend most of his time waiting for the action circle to fill up. I’d still like to give the game a try, but I can’t justify spending full price on it. Anyway, have you guys played the game and if so then what’s your opinion on it?
PS: Europe still hasn't received the game so I couldn't test (as in rent or play at a friend's house) the game even if I wanted to.

I dont trust reviewers completely since everybody's tastes are different.
Anyways, the Avatar customization seems pretty nice so far, I like it far better than the one they used on the PSN Home. I've only gotten as far as the ending to the opening cut-scene so far though, I had to save and turn it off. It seems I may need to fix the controls a bit since the camera controls seem reversed.
As far as I can tell the Avatar you create will be the Main character's friend throughout the game.

I've decided to wait until the second price drop or 30$, whichever hits first. It's a Sony-published game, it won't go rare.

Mind you, I've only played up until the castle is attacked and Leonard saves the Princess from being murdered by the Black Knight. I like the game so far. I like the Avatar customization this game has. It has many options to choose from to create a personal "you" in the game.
Graphics are nice, despite the top resolution being 720p. The battle mode of this game is a bit different, for me at least. But I'm growing to like it.
It's good. I'll let you know more as I play it tonight.

There is a DLC Add-On for this already, its $5, and lets you customize your Avatar's featues at any Savepoint, otherwise you can only customize the Avatar's features at the beginning of a new game.
On the Field, there are Harvesting Points where you can find items. It seems that anything you equip will change the appearance of your avatar, Equipment will have to be maintained and occasionally repaired, you can also upgrade it.
You can walk up to enemies on the field and hit x to initiate an attack, there's a circle thing that has to load all the way around b4 you can attack again. So its a lil' similar to FFXII, also there's no need for potions outside of battle, because if you open the menu and sit for a bit your HP refills. You can also heal at a savepoint.
Right now I'm just grinding a bit, I'm in the first field area, at Lv4.

I'm getting this. I did not like FFXII for it's battle system but for the story/characters....seeing as how Level-5 took the battle system and improved it (from what i can see from your post) and seeing as how this is also like Dark Cloud - Making your own towns online and stuff. I'll definantly get it when i can, probably Tommorrow? If well...i'm lucky. Only thing i want to see someday is that they somehow~~~~~~(See how long that somehow is >.>? lol meaning probably impossible but) For silent games like this, it would be nice if you the player could talk too the people xD. Like...depending on how your answer it might go like a recogniztion? errr i don't know how to word it exactly like
NPC: Lets go guys we have to hurry and rescue (him/her)
Your Character - You talking: -depends on how you say it- "This could be a trap guys shouldn't we take are time.
NPC: -based on the responce being close to what the file in the game has- (It could be a trap) "Even if it is trap if we don't go now (He/she) could die"
._. i'd just love to see this idea be used lol.

I don't honestly see this as being an improved version of FFXII's combat system. It's more like a different flavor of it. You still have the annoying MMO-style caveats that FFXII had (the enemies hit with "ranged melee" and you can't.) but it does ditch the license system, which makes more sense in my opinion.
I'm not quite sure how to take the fact that your character isn't a major part of the action (and the way they try and make it seem like he's talking despite being a mute hero by making lame-o hand gestures without sound.) and I haven't tried online yet, but it's a solid average experience for me thus far.
*This post not intended to be Atlus USA's take on the game.*

Hmmm i don't know i find it improved because honestly in FFXII i could just sit back and be lazy...or rather more lazy lol. . .at least in this you have to keep pressing the butteon xD. (Well you do have polearms in this game i think? from what i remember... so that counts as ranged melee)

Same here.
The game didn't appeal to me at all until I saw the video for its character customization and the battle system. Now it looks quite intriguing.
But the truth is I still have quite a bit of RPG backlog (especially on my DS), and the upcoming FF13 and SMT:SJ as well as Infinite Space aren't going to help matters at all. :(

Thought I'd include the overworld map is like the ones in Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, FFXII, ect.. Which are more or less a 'map' with different markers on it you select to go to.
I do like seeing the enemy markers on the field mini map though, and although ranged attacks arent available in the beginning, I'm sure if you get a bow or magic you'll be able to use ranged.

I like how this is an MMORPG without the first M. Character customization is quite deep, and you get to change costumes for all of the characters too. Graphics aren't that great and the story's nothing special, but Nolan North plays Cyrus, which instantly makes him awesome, ha ha!
My only minor gripe would be, as mentioned before, how enemies can use melee attacks from far away but you have to run in close to do that, and the kinda long wait time. The wait time really isn't that bad though if you're used to Final Fantasy's traditional ATB system.
Major gripe though is how you have to pay about $5 each time you want to change the physical appearance of your character. I hear you have to pay to be able to get better stuff for your Giorama too. I guess that's LEVEL-5's way of funding for their server maintenance and such.

"each time" no. The add-on for 5$ allows you to customize at 'anytime' not each time. As for the town-building, you win some of the materials from your quest online and can take the weapons you earned online to offline.

Thanks, I was avoiding it but may get that now. The term "ticket" certainly didn't sound like a multiple-use item.

From what i was reading on my ps3 when i was looking at the store it seemed like it was a multiple use but after re-reading you might have to re-purchase (But really if you hate your character at the begining you can always make a new-game, so that still shouldn't bother you)

You would still have to run through the "tutorial" again, right? Seems bothersome to me.

Sorry i guess not, you can always check on the forums.
Well before you finish the tutorial perhaps you can look at your character xD? besides i hear the customization is very well done so you shouldn't be dissapointed with your choice if you worked on it a bit.

Yeah I doubt I'll need to change Dain appearance at all, pretty satisfied, though I may make another file with a female avatar as well.

I asked around, apparently the Ticket is a one time use item. I suppose I would compare it to the DLC for Vesperia where you could only use it 1 time per game, but I'm unsure if you can use the Ticket again on another gamefile.

I can personally confirm WKC's ticket is 1-time only. It is used the moment you confirm changes and gone the next time you access a save point. The game reminds you to save afterward so that you wouldn't lose what you had purchased. I haven't tried making another character, though I doubt the ticket would reappear. Vesperia's DLC gives you more for your (real) money because you can reuse those tickets once per playthrough.

Thats what I meant, can you use the ticket once per playthrough or just once. Anyways It seems a rather pricey $5 for a one time only item, for something so meager.

As I mentioned in the "What are you playing?" thread, I love the multi-player, but I cannot stand the single player purely for the characters. I'm enjoying the gameplay, the music, the graphical style, and then the sheer stupidity of the cast makes me want to stop playing it. If it weren't pretty much necessary to play single-player to unlock things in online, I'm not even sure if I would play the offline mode at all.
The game even tries to have serious moments, and then a complete lapse of judgement from each and every member of your cast seems to completely ruin it.

The most annoying thing is the npc's that keep taking while you're exploring "thats not the right way, or, havent we already been here", its super annoying.

-I like the game actually...the whole 'cast being stupid' um i've played plenty of games were the 'cast is stupid', sorry you don't get einstein for a character that knows he is a characater and the whole plot to the game. >_>
-The combo system i love, good way for Role Play and from what i'm seeing, i can actually do a few Role Play attack ideas.
-The design for the characters and even your own customized character are well done.
I've got more good things to say but i have to go for now but currently i give this game a 9.

Been playing the game all week, am at like 90 hours.
I give it a 4/5
The plot is pretty simple, but that's not a bad thing I think.
I really like how customizable the avatar is, and how many armor types there are.
I found the cast quite likeable and the voice acting isn't that bad. :p
I'm looking forward to WKC2 :3

I feel the game is sub-par after all the hype that was associated with it. The combat system is a boring version of FFXII's in the fact that although you can do combos you can't really deem what situations your party members should use them in. Its also really difficult for me atleast to use items in battle. The voice acting is ATROCIOUS. Why don't we get the ability to use the original japanese voices in games? Is it really that hard? The graphics and music are both nice, hardly good enough to be a selling point though.....story is the same old jrpg rehash.

<.< your right, the voice acting is ATROCIOUS for the avatar...all he does is stand their and----o wait you mean the main cast??? well i found them to be good....i can't really see how you find them atrocious....it astonishes me....
As for using items, you never really should even need to use them, your team should all have heal O.o...only item you might need are revival items. Boring version of FFXII....???? More like improvement but O_o i guess improvement is boring???

Your post has no evidence of how it is an improvement. And by atrocious voice acting, yes I mean the MC.

As you mentioned the battlesystem is like FFXII - were you wait for the gauge to fill up and them you can attack. The defence i find to be an improvement because instead of cycling through and click 'defend' and then wait again, in WKC you just press r1 and the gauge will quickly refill. Like you mentioned you do have a combo system but your forgetting with that combo system you have to include the "Learn skills" which i find better then that "License system" you had to go through. In FFXII i also never noticed where you could attack enemies in the air and then use magic from the air on the fallen enemy you just struck back down to the ground. Plus in this game at least you can wield actual different weapons unlike FFXII which actually limits your characters too using a certain type of weapon. O.o i'm sure others could say how it's an improvement but this is how i see how the combat system is an improvement.

:agree: Also the EXP online is almost nothing. I found you had to level on your own, then meet up. WKC tried too hard to be both an online and offline RPG.

I really enjoy this game , my only enjoyment comes from online. 5$ for the makeover ticket is a bit harsh, fortunately it can be downloaded 5 more times without paying again. The in game forum is pretty cool for finding players to quest with.

To get multiple uses out of the ticket you select it again at the ps store, I could not find mine in download history. I at first thought I was purchasing another ticket, was not billed and downloaded it 3 more times immediately , never billed once.

I would love to play with someone. I don't have a keyboard connected to the PS3 so it makes communication kind of hard. Will the PS3 connect with ANY wireless keyboard? I have one. I'm Lvl 22, 64% Divine, 58% Axe, GR 2.
On a side note, I'm looking for Spider Corpses to make the Grappler set of armor. Where can I find them? I'm already lvl 22 and it's a lvl 20 set of armor. The only place I could find them being listed online is Greede Underbelly. I don't think they're sellable via Geo-shops either. Any suggestions?

I was able to play through the first quest w/o communication, when it was over we just used to emots thank each other.
I'm not sure, on the keyboard thing. You could try it, I'd think any usb kb would work. I do know that you can use a headset on it, I recall hearing some guy ask for party members once.

Use a mic if you have no keyboard, just turn down the sound level or you'll be blasting the whole room with your voice xP
