View Full Version : My PS2 Slim won't read Xenosaga Ep. I

I have bought three different copies of Xenosaga Episode I for PS2, 2 black label and one greatest hits, and my PS2 won't play a single one of them. It plays every other game in my collection just fine but won't play this game...

I've looked and looked on the internet and have only found this same issue addressed once, but it was concerning a different game. The solution was to bend something back into place or whatever but the link to the diagram was broken and I'm a bit scared to go prying it apart in the first place. I've had the PS2 since 2005 or 2006. Should I just buy a new one? Does anyone know of a fix for this? With proper instructions I would crack it open.

Help me! :very_sad:

Might need a new ps2. Why dont you go to GameCrazy and see if the disc works on one of their consoles. Or try it on a friends.

Yeah, after being able to stomach and finish the first game, i moved on to the second and the gameplay was so terrible I didn't want to continue. The skill system was pretty terrible and there was no difference between one character or the other save for the model.

I would just watch the anime instead, since that was what it was trying so hard to be anyway.

Oh god no. Xenosaga ep. I wasn't a great game, but at the very least it was a good game with some great moments. Xenosaga the Animation is an abomination. It takes everything good about the game and ruins it.

I dunno that this problem is exclusive to PS2 slims. A friend of mine simply couldn't watch certain DVDs on his PS2 fat, and it was picky about a game or two also. PS2 hardware is a special kind of fail only surpassed by the 360. But like the above, I'd recommend trying the game on some other PS2 and maybe buying a new one.

Interestingly, when my ol' fat PS2 started to croak, Xenosaga Episode 1 was one of just two games it would play. The other game being Unlimited Saga.

In other words, the only two games I own that enrage me. That PS2 was ornery, man.

Oh so wrong, the characters attacks had different effects in combat. Knocking enemies into the air, or to the ground as well as different attack attributes.

I would just watch the anime instead, since that was what it was trying so hard to be anyway. If you say so, the anime didn't actually follow the story from the game though and it was pretty bad. Definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

A good idea for the OP might just be to play Xenosaga III. There is a detailed synopsis of the events from I and II plus it is a much better game. Not that I thought Xenosaga was a bad game or anything, but it is really rough around the edges and doesn't hold up well (especially in the graphics department) when compared to other contemporaneous ps2 rpg's.

I managed to get through the first 2, never picked up III though.

Bah. Xenosaga 1 annoys me with the long, drawn out attack animations, but Xenosaga 2 is easily one of my favorite games to play, of all time. Xeno 3 becomes more traditional though, so even if you don't like the first two, 3 is definitely worth a playthrough.

I thought Xenosaga was a great game series and I enjoyed them all

I bought all three at once after years of debate...

Now that I own them all....and I've bought two more copies of the first...it's gonna be hard to just skip one...

ARGH!!!

But ok....since the PS3 isn't backwards compatible we were gonna eventually pick up a new PS2 anyway. I guess this just hastens that purchase.

Thanks so much.

Granted I haven't played ep. III yet, but as I'm in the middle of a replay of ep. I, I have to say that I think it's graphics hold up very well, even on my HDTV. Sure, the characters themselves are a bit plasticy and undertextured, but they're well animated and the mechs, gnosis, and special effects loook fantastic. There are certainly games that have aged worse. Suikoden III springs to mind, as much as I love it. (And the award for jerkiest animation goes to...)

If anything, the part that has aged the worse is the part that I've always hated: little ambient music. Hours and hours of nothing but Shion's footsteps and sound effects. Two disc OST, and 1.5 of those discs are music played only in cut scenes. What a waste.
