Sega (http://kotaku.com/5447897/how-xbox-could-have-helped-the-dreamcast-survive?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+kotaku%2Ffull+%28Kotaku%29&utm_content=Google+Reader) wanted the Xbox to be BC with the Dreamcast... which would have easily made the Xbox my favorite console last gen. :(

If Dreamcast was BC with the Xbox, the Xbox 360 would probably also be BC with Dreamcast...
...That...would have been awesome. :[

The article title is kind of silly. Dreamcast had a slow trickle of niche, but quality, titles that came out years after it was "dead".

I always thought the X-Box controller was just like my Dreamcast's.
It would be nice if it had backwards compatibility, because I can't do local versus on my XBLA Virtual On.

I, too, also thought about the similarities between the Dreamcast and Xbox controllers. I also remember the old articles about Microsoft participating in the Dreamcast's OS.
So, had those negotiations gone through, the Xbox would be the Dreamcast's successor, just like it looks. Funny how things like that turn out...

Yeah, I believe Windows CE ran on the Dreamcast. And you could code Dreamcast games using the Direct X 6 API, although it was approximately one bazillion times slower than the native API.
As a matter of fact, Halo was at one point going to be a Dreamcast game. I still have an issue of the Official Dreamcast Magazine with a Halo preview.
But rather than the XBox being the unofficial Dreamcast 2, I see the situation more as Microsoft testing the waters with involvement in the Dreamcast. And taking notes on controller design.
I would like to say that Microsoft simply didn't reciprocate Sega's hospitality, but honestly, the architectures of the Dreamcast and XBox were different enough so that I really don't think the XBox could have run Dreamcast games. And I'm sure MS wanted the XBox to have a standard PC architecture for ease of porting various tools and APIs whilst polishing things up for the 360. The online games thing sounds like an excuse to me.
Technobabble and speculation aside, if Dreamcast backwards compatibility were announced for the 360, I would buy one tomorrow.

It would be nice if they brought DC games to the current gen consoles, but I just need Capcom to bring Cannon Spike to PSN/Live Arcade with online play and I'm good.
