You know maybe not but this year, SNK Playmore has not seen fit to install a booth at the Tokyo Game Show 2009. The lack of new titles and the need to make some economies are undoubtedly the main reasons for absenteeism. This has not prevented Masaaki Kukino, the branch responsible for Research & Development at SNK Playmore, and incidentally the producer on the game The King of Fighters XII, to be back at the show. Her presence did we not escape and we are eager to interview him about the future and the next episode in KOF coming soon. This is a little restraint that evokes the forthcoming The King of Fighters XIII in front of our camera. It signed an exclusive JeuxActu.

Changelist:
System notes:
CHANGES FROM THE PREVIOUS VERSION
=================================

GRAPHICS
- Characters are smaller and it’s easier to see the full screen.
- As of now there aren’t any stages that make it hard to see the characters.

SYSTEM
- All KOFXII systems (CC, sousai, guard attack) have been removed
- Backstep probably can’t be shortened either.
- Throws are back to lever + button motion
- Kara cancels are possible again.

GAME SYSTEM
===========
8- way lever + 4 buttons.

COUNTER HITS
Counter hits have a blue effect when they occur, similar to KOFXII but the effect isn’t the same.
A few counter hit animations are like KOFXII but the window is short, sort of like the interval between dashing and doing a strong attack.

GUARD CRUSH
Guard meter under the lifebar, your guard drops when it becomes empty. However at the current time it seems to recover much faster than it’s lost, so there haven’t been that many guard crushes seen. On top of that it looks like the guard crush window is very tight so it’s very hard to take advantage of it. Wondering if drive attacks will have a bigger effect on the guard meter.

GUARD CANCEL
Revived from older games. Costs 1 power stock. Does damage, but not possible to KO with it.

STUN
This has also returned. However unlike XI there’s no visible stun meter so it’s not possible to know when it’s going to happen.

POWER GAUGES
Return of multiple power stocks. You get one additional stock per team member that you lose (much like earlier games). Feels like they charge up faster than in previous games.

EX SPECIAL MOVES/DESPERATION MOVES
Use 1 stock to do powered up specials or DMs. The powering up depends on the move – might be more damage, invincibility, etc.
EX specials have a blue shadow sort of effect to them while EX DMs are red (versus yellow for regular DMs)

DRIVE GAUGE
Green gauge above the power gauge. The length increases by 50% every time you lose a character (so that the gauge is twice as long when you’re down to your last character). Fills up at about the same rate as the power gauge, so pretty quickly. However, whiffing special moves will not fill the drive gauge (although it still fills the power gauge).

DRIVE CANCEL
Can be used as soon as the drive gauge passes 50%, which means that on your last character it can be used up to four times.
You can cancel special moves as well as command moves that couldn’t normally be cancelled into other special moves and DMs.

HYPERDRIVE MODE
Press BC when the drive gauge is maxed out to activate. Your character will have a sort of hazy afterglow and will be able to do as many drive cancels as he wants. The gauge doesn’t fall faster if you do a cancel like in ‘02. However if you take any damage the mode ends.

They better come out with XIII. They have quite a lot to make up for after XII. Also, I'm pretty sure Ignition would handle this.

Last I heard SNK was going to handle all future publishing for their property due to the poor sales surrounding Ingition's handling of KoFXII

You might be right but if Atlus is publishing this I know they will do a better job of localization than Ignition because the most of the English voices were terrible!

Well actually, I'd say Atlus would do a better job of localization than SNK themselves. Even SNK Playmore has had major issues with their in-house translations in the past.

Last I heard SNK was going to handle all future publishing for their property due to the poor sales surrounding Ingition's handling of KoFXIIMore like poor sales because everyone heard the game was terrible. Which it was. I feel worse about paying full price on KoFXII than I do about paying full price on SO4. And that says something.

The design of the new logo reminds me more of the NESTS Saga rather then unfinished Ash Crimson Trilogy. Now, I'm I half expecting Igniz to appear as a secret boss...
Just ditch the circuit board pattern on the letters.

When I saw that logo, my eyes played tricked on me, and I thought it said "Freaking Fighters XIII". >_> Must be because of that big "F" next to the circuit board XIII.

News Update!
They will keep the Sprite style from KOFXII and this time the story will left off from KOF IX and be the true final chapter in the Ash saga! It might show Ash's true goal on why he's after the three treasures! With one treasure left is Kyo's Sword!

舞、ユリ、キング参戦

Mai, Yuri and King are in.

・舞の背中が丸見えでエロイ

You can see all of Mai's back, sexaaay!

・キングは上着なし

King isn't wearing her coat/jacket.

・テリーにバスターウルフあり

Terry has his Buster Wolf.

・EX必殺技EX超必殺技追加(例:ユリのらいおけんの弾が増える)

There are EX DMs and EX SDMs, for example you can get extra hits with Yuri's Raioken.

・ハイパードライブゲージでドライブキャンセルすると必殺技から必殺技or超必殺技につながる オリコンち っく

If you Drive Cancel your hyper drive gauge you can chain a DM into another DM or SDM. Like a create a combo system sort of.

・京に空中大蛇薙

Kyo can do his SDM?? (Don't play Kyo) in the air. The one where he slides forward with the massive flame in front of him. His standard one.

・アテナのグラ変わらず

Athena's "gura" is unchanged. Not sure what a "gura" is, assume it's a shortened name for one of her moves or describing her look...

・マチュアと庵と???でチーム

Mature and Iori are on a team with an unrevealed character.

・カラーエディットの数が最多

There are heaps of character colors.

・紅丸が裸

Benimaru is naked??!?!

・アルゼンチンバックブリーカーの間合いが相変わらず狭い

Argentine Backbreaker timing is strict as always.

・キャラセレの時間が長い

Character select time is long.

P.S, Cyberfanatix people please credit the translator. Pet peeve of mine :)

Yet Another Tim

As for Team Iori, I hope that the 3rd member would be Vice.

Also, a couple of storyline questions:

1. Since Ash took away Iori's flame back in XI, then, does this mean that the latter's gonna be powerless, or will his natural Yasakani powers gonna re-emerge?

2. Should Ash succeed in stealing Kyo's power, then, will the Psycho Soldiers gonna get bumped, seeing how back in XI, a remnant of NESTS targeted Kensou's Dragon Power?

those were ancient concept designs. They might not even be planned anymore,
or replaced with other characters or concepts.

The 2 women who appeared threatening Heidern in XI might be 2 of the members
for the New team consisting of Those from the Past members:

anyway here is what I posted in another thread, but some of it might be new links

MUCH MORE will be revealed! :) But this is what they shown at the event so far: I think if Atlus teams up with SNKP, or Atlus USA localizes the US version, they could get GGPO in there as the online play netcode somehow. :)

oh and here is something about GGPO.

learned something new, guess asking for GGPO isn't the answer:

"Ok folks, i am going to point something out so you guys will understand it.

GGPO has never been used in a fighting game on console. Not a single fighter uses it as its netcode. The GGPO algorithm is currently licensed to Capcom for the sole purpose of having exclusive use of it as a base for SF4 and STHD. Applying GGPO to the arcade release of the game accomplishes nothing test wise as arcade cabinets have their own internal networks to transfer data between and thus don't need a true netcode.

Also GGPO is designed for the pc and to date there has been no real application of its entire programing to a console game of any sort. The netcode derived from it in and of itself is not as strong as say BlazBlue's netcode which is completely made from scratch.

The best option for SNKP is to either hire a global netcode service provider or create their own netcode in house so that it can be designed to run the game and compensate for the differences in connections between players. It bothers me that people still think GGPO is the end all be all of netcodes when it can't actually run in a console environment as is."

character-specific stuff
by SonicTempest on Sat Mar 27, 2010 1:33 am

Character-specific stuff:

ELISABETH (might be inaccurate since the author wasn't familiar with Elisabeth in XII)
- More effects on her moves
- Regained dp+P and QCF,HCB+P
- QCF,HCB+P connects after dp+C
- dp+C has upper body invincibility. Low attacks beat it.
- EX QCFx2+P fires off 'light bullets' during the second half of the move. Probably can be beaten by guard cancel rolling.

DUO LON
- New move QCB+P. Fires off a haze that cancels fireballs (maybe the EX version only?). Looks like it has no hitbox...use it for mindgames?
- When his EX DM hits something that looks like a high-speed hurricane mixer (???) appears.
- Can't cancel his QCF+Px3 into teleport without a drive cancel

SHEN WOO
- Far standing D has a new animation. A high kick with slow startup.
- Jump D crosses up easier
- QCF+C has slower startup and more lag. The EX version knocks the opponent away.
- EX QCB+A has more range and seemingly faster startup
- QCF+K has small range as usual but the EX version has more range
- QCFx2+P can probably be used the same was as it was in KOFXI. EX version is faster and has full-body invincibility - so much so you can use it as anti-air!
- C,A,B,C DM is present, but no headbutt (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!)
- stand C, f+B, QCF+A DC QCF+K DC QCFx2+P is a combo, although this is the same combo that had some tough links in XII. Seems like poor use of the drive gauge (lol)
- It'd be nice if he could do anything from low attacks...

KYO
- Regained air d+C. Hard knockdown on an aerial opponents, long stun on grounded opponents. Can be used to cross up.
- Can still combo stand B -> dp+P. On the second hit of dp+P you can drive cancel to QCF+K and combo to Orochinagi (ouch!)
- QCF+P seems to have less lag?
- Gained mid-air Orochinagi. Voice clip is 'Kore de kimeru ze!'
- Doesn't seem to have changed much.
- Seems very strong.

BENIMARU
- Regained Benimaru Koreda (his command throw)
- Might have regained his air throw?

DAIMON
- Regained dp+K
- HCF+A somehow managed to grab a standing Shen. Was it always like that? Might be stronger in terms of priority.

IORI
- Gained a new command move df+C. Swings an arm downward as if he were hitting a stake. Hits mid.
- Regained his air b+B
- dp+P has more lag? EX version does two hits and floats the opponent.
- HCF+P doesn't launch the opponent so high that he can't be seen anymore

MATURE
- Don't know much about her KOFXII version.
- Despair (dp+P), Death Row (QCB+Px2), Ebony Tears (QCF,HCB+P) and Metal Massacre (QCB+K) regained
(She has dp+P in KOFXII, but whatever)

TERRY
- Can't cancel standing B. Tried to cancel into a command move and failed.
- far C cancellable
- crouch D can be cancelled into command moves
- far D has new animation. Looks like the KOFXI animation. Might be useful as an anti-air.
- jump D crosses up easier. (seems like this is the case with a lot of characters)
- df+C seems to have a bigger frontal hitbox
- f+A comes out slower
- Power Wave comes out slower but has less lag. EX version does 3 hits.
- B Crack Shoot is an overhead and does multiple hits. EX version might hit mid and has faster startup. Hard knockdown on counter hits against an airborne opponent.
- Burn Knuckle seems the same? EX version does multiple hits and makes the opponent fly upwards. Not sure if you can follow up afterwards.
- Rising Tackle has no change. EX version goes vertically straight up and does something like 25 hits (lol) and has fast startup.

ANDY
- Can't brake Reppadan any more. Can still cross up with it, though.
- EX Zaneiken can move from one side of the screen to another
- EX Hishouken flies faster.
- EX Choureppadan is good enough to be used as an anti-air.

JOE
- Regained Ougon no Kakato (QCB+K). B version flies low while D version goes high, but neither has much lag.
- Regained Bakuretsu Hurricane Tiger Kakato. Can be connected from weak attacks.
- Slash Kick has more lag
- D Tiger Kick has a lower trajectory
- EX Hurricane Upper shoots 3 projectiles. Regular version has less lag?
- Sliding is a command move, and knocks down even when cancelled into. More lag?

KIM
- Regained mid-air Houou Kyaku.
- f,f+D is now done as f,f+A

RAIDEN
- Gained Super Drop Kick (hold K for ten seconds and release) and Crazy Train (QCFx2+P)
- Regular version of Giant Bomb has more lag? EX version knocks the opponent up.

ATHENA
- Psycho Ball has less lag. EX version does 3 hits and has 'penetrating power' (?? goes through other fireballs, maybe?)
- Regained Psychic Teleport. EX version included.
- Throw animation has changed. Athena teleports to diagonally above the opponent and throws them.

KENSOU
- Has normals from KOFXII but specials from his earlier versions.
- Regained Chokyuudan (fireball), Ryusogeki (air QCB+P) and QCF,HCB+P DM.
- Lost QCB+A, QCB+C from KOFXII
- Still has QCB+K from KOFXII.
- Pressing B+D makes him do his KOFXII backstep
- Ryuugakusai has its command reversed (rdp+K instead of dp+K...the way it used to be)

CHIN
- Didn't see him much so no idea how he's changed.

RYO
- far D is the same as close D. Maybe they'll change this?
- far C cancellable
- jump D crosses up easier
- C Ko'ouken has more lag. EX version does 3 hits.
- EX Kohou does 3 hits. No idea if there's any effect on invincibility.
- B Hienshippuukyaku is the same. D Hienshippuukyaku whiffs against crouchers. EX version is faster and resembles Takuma's version of the move - it launches. Maybe you need to use a drive cancel to follow up?

ROBERT
- Can cancel his low attacks
- Has all his moves from KOFXII

RALF
- Regained air QCF+P.
- Vulcan Punch has more lag? Can't connect a stand D after it anymore. Instead of that you can drive cancel to Galactica Phantom.

CLARK
- Regained Gatling Attack
- Still has his forward step move from XII

LEONA
- Regular V-slasher has been weakened.

MAI
- How to say this...she benefits a lot from the new system.
- Both A and C Ryuuenbu have low lag and can be followed up with stand A in the corner. If the opponent is in mid-air even stand C is possible.
- Musasabi no Mai is great for comboing in the corner. If you hit them near their feet (i.e. space it so that it hits them at the lower part of their hitbox) they shouldn't be able to retaliate.
- Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi is fast enough to combo from light attacks, and is damaging.
- d.B -> B -> Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi DC Musasabi no Mai -> C Ryuuenbu -> Chou Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi is a combo.
- Kachousen has slower startup but less lag
- Jump CD felt a little too fast
- She has an air throw which can be used in combos.
- EX Chou Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi is invincible.

YURI
- Gained a new move, midair df+B which is very much like Yun/Yang's Raigekishuu from 3S. She changes trajectory suddenly with no voice clip so it's a bit startling.
- Raiohken has her jumping up to do the move again. Startup is slow. EX version shoots two fireballs.
- Can't charge up Ko'ouken? Haohshokoken is a DM.
- Hyakuretsu Binta seems to have faster startup than usual.
- Not sure how effective her Saiha is
- Hien Hou'ou Kyaku connects from light attacks
- df+D isn't on her movelist, nor did I see it, so it probably doesn't combo from light attacks (lol)

KING
- Sliding is unsafe on block
- Gained a mid-air Venom Strike. Flies horizontally with unlimited range.
- Venom Strike is the same as it was. No high/low variations.
- Tornado Kick is the '95 version. Doesn't seem to have any invincibility.
- DMs are Surprise Rose and Double Strike. Didn't seem to have Illusion Dance.
- Surprise Rose can cross up as King dives. Can escape by rolling.

ASH
- Same old Guile clone (lol)
- A Ventose has so little lag that you can combo it into a sweep if you're close enough (can't remember if the XII version was just like that). C version is unchanged.
- EX version of Genie will make two flames appear on the screen. The locations probably depend on the two buttons you used to activate the EX version.
- Thermidor has faster startup, but only does 5 hits
- Sans-culotte has the same speed and lack of range. No other changes.

very cool!

Maybe Atlus USA could talk to Atlus Japan to talk with SNKP about having a deal for the console port?

Who knows, maybe the promotions could expand into even offering a cereal brand to increase awareness! :)

Sorry if this is a noob question since I don't follow the storyline for KoF but whatever happened to Billy Kane, Geese Howard and Robert Garcia? Those were my favorite in past KoF and I'd love to see them in new and purdy, current-gen graphics!

Isn't Garcia in XIII? I think he was also in XII, but I avoided that game due to the spotty netcode.

Something in the lines "This product is a temporary version that is still under development / testing by our staff, we hope that you have enjoyed your experience and please look forward to the finished product".... I'm kinda stretching it. A lot. I suppose that this is the "ending" screen that this version has after a game clear, or something.

Kind of not interested. I was a huge fan of the KOF series and I wanted to like KOFXII but we just got shafted in the end. I doubt I'll make another purchase in this series.

Flawed logic. You are missing out on something better than great!
There are game series that have their good games, bad games, and upcoming
sequels that redeem and bring back what people loved about the series.

Yeah, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that. But a new team would be great too - I'll be really disappointed if this is the first "real" KOF (as in, not a dream match) not to have any new characters.

I was happy with XII, all along I said I don't give a #### as long as it has a VS mode and characters.

Still will be nice to see new backgrounds, characters, moves, game system. Fix the online so it gets some good reviews.

Due to the sales of XII will XIII even get a release over here? Still, as long as it's region free that don't matter too much..

Haha sweet! I love fighting games! King of Fighters is definitely one of my favourite series, but I have yet to pick up XII because the price won't come down, and I can't afford it right now (plus the bad reviews, even though I suspect it isn't even that bad). Heh I'm definitely looking forward to XIII. Wonder if the arcade boss will be as crazy hard as Magaki in XI. Hardest fighting game boss ever.

You mean 2010?
Here's the blog translation!

Here's a more accurate translation of the blog (found on Orochinagi, posted by Yuki Yagami):

Q: Tell us about the 'drive cancel.'
A: Drive cancelling is a system where you use up some of the hyperdrive gauge to cancel special moves into special moves or special moves into DMs. You can even use EX special moves and EX DMs.

Q: What sort of situations would you use a drive cancel in?
A: The basic idea is to do more damage by comboing your specials into one another. As for more interesting uses, let's see ... you can deliberately use a special move that has some recovery lag, to bait a guard cancel attack from your opponent, but you can cancel the lag from your special move using a drive cancel to beat his guard cancel attack. Alternatively you can cancel your special move into a special move that will let you escape from the guard cancel attack without getting hit.

So you can use it in various situations to create an advantage for yourself.

(ST's note: Certainly sounds a lot like roman cancelling from the GG series)

Q: What's the difference between drive cancelling and hyperdrive mode?
A: A drive cancel is a single cancel, but hyperdrive mode is a mode where you can do as many cancels as you want for a fixed time. Hyperdrive cancels will also let you cancel more types of moves than a regular drive cancel, so you can do different types of combos in hyperdrive mode than you can with a regular drive cancel.

Therefore, drive cancels are something that you might do depending on the situation. Hyperdrive mode is something you use when you want to land a high damage combo.

Q: Looks like fun to go for a high damage combo!
A: Yeah. We think that a lot of the fun of fighting games comes from crushing your opponents with powerful combo attacks, so we're in the process of figuring out how best to let players go on the offensive in the manner that they desire .

Even in terms of graphics, we added the afterimage effect to give the impression of speed and acceleration while doing these cancel combos.

Q: So I guess I should show my skills through coming up with my own combos, eh?
A: I mentioned powerful combos are, but the truth is that these combos vary depending on the opponent character, your distance from the opponent and so on. Practice will help one figure out which combos are best on which opponents and at what distances.

We want to create a system with numerous possibilities where you can say "I can research hyperdrive mode combos and show off my dominance!", So please, do try many different combos.

Of course, don't restrict yourself to just practical combos - we're also happy to see people try out combos that stupefy others with their flashiness!

Q: Finally, please tell us your favourite combo using drive cancels or hyperdrive mode.
A: OK, here's a combo that uses drive cancels.
My recommendation would be to drive cancel Athena's Psycho Sword into her EX Psycho Ball. The EX version of Psycho Ball does multiple hits, so you can make use of the extended stun time to run forward and do followup attacks. It's easy to do, and it's a combo that hasn't been seen in KOF until now.

Q: Eh? That actually connects? Drive cancel and hyperdrive combos definitely seem very deep and entertaining.

Next week, we'll talk about KOF XIII's story. Until then!

Here I put exactly what it says in the last three lines in the table. http://loda.jp/test_test/?id=177.png

DRIVE CANCEL - Input commands of a SDM during certain DMs - Using Hyer Drive Gause besides the SDM, enables to link a DM to a SDM.
NEO MAX SDM - Input certain commands - A Super which is realized by using three power gauge.
MAX CANCEL - Input commands of a MEGA POWER MAX SDM during certain SDMs - Using the HD Gauge, enables to link a SDM to a NEO MAX SDM.

I hope they'd bring back Vice; say, I hope you guys don't mind my speculating.

1. Since it's been revealed that Yamazaki has Orochi blood in him, is it possible that he might be the 3rd member of Iori's team? I just hope not, since Yamazaki has a grudge with Iori (iirc, it's not yet resolved).

2. Will Ralf & Clark gonna use grenades this time around?

3. Will Adel be a cast member of XIII? He's in KOF since the Ash Saga.

You answered your own question there.

Will Ralf & Clark gonna use grenades this time around?
Considering that they can defeat opponents by throwing them around like rag dolls and/or punching them so hard they explode from sheer awesomeness, why would they even need grenades?

3. Will Adel be a cast member of XIII?
I don't see why Adelheid wouldn't be included in the roster; Word of God did state that he's just as much a protagonist as designated hero Ash. On top of that, his sister Rose does have some relevance to the plot.

1. I did not intend to do that. Another detail I missed on my previous post is the whole teased road of redemption, pertaining to Iori. Besides, Iori is NOT part of the Heavenly Kings of Orochi, let alone the Orochi 8.

2. Well, since Ralf & Clark are from Ikari Warriors, adding grenades to their arsenal would make sense, especially that Ralf is a Rambo shout out.

3. I hope that he'd show up. Also, this time around, is "R" Rose?

I don't believe that will happen. Last I checked, Capcom purchased the rights to GGPO.

Purchased the rights to use GGPO not equal to sole ownership of GGPO. Basically they got the license to use it so others can still use it as long as they pay the creator of GGPO (as it is proprietary). See the GGPO forums for the gist of it.

And Most of the videos from the HK Location Test
http://www.mmcafe.com/cgi-bin/forums/bbs/messages/13144.shtml#0
---------------------------Impressions #1---------------------------

Graphics are awsum. But I'm a pretty low bar setter in these regards, but I do find them very pleasing. No shadowing issues in XII appearing here anymore. Maybe I'm used to uber closeup sprites in XII, but it now somehow needs some getting used to from me. Neomax effects are dramatic and it's like suddenly they went nuts for a split second doing something we never saw before. The wow factor is awesome.

The music is what we heard on the website, bears no repeating. It's good. That's all.

The color palette's pretty cool and amazing. I saw some pretty unique color combination, Kyo had this Shin Kyo color and Iori has two variants of his current suit, etc. And to top it off, the character select screen's timer does give you sufficient time to choose 3 characters AND their respective colors (if you are choosing your characters semi-decisively).

Controls aren't uber responsive, I had times where I tried to do a DP, but then instead a jump comes out. I think it may be my own alignment problem more than the stick's. But the feedback has been the stick isn't as responsive as the players want.

On Drive Cancels (are they called Drive Cancels?), it's too easy to pull off without warning. At times I try to do a dp, and then it comes out with a qcf move (eg my Kyo does a dp+C and then a qcf+C comes out after the first hit). I'd prefer personally that I am at least able to drive cancel like I wanted to.

The hyper drive bar seems to be an auto-fill bar which is fine to me. It does feel very much like 2k2(UM) to me when people activate it.

It seems like a lot more normals can be kara-cancelled. First thing comes to mind for me is Shen Woo's low D. Kyo's far C is now also cancellable. However, I must note that some normals like Kyo's close C seems to have a smaller than usual cancelling window. At times, you need to input the next move early.

Speaking of which. I'm not 100% sure whether all far/close attacks are back yet. The majority of them are, but eg. Ryo still is stuck with his old standing D in XII and I haven't seen Kyo do a close D yet.

Character impressions:
Kyo - Compared to XII Kyo, he doesn't have a gameplay revolving pressing B like a madman. While his low B->standing B->whatever combo is still around, it's harder to come out. His Oniyaki still feels nigh invincible. His Orochinagi still has the old invincibility. Air Orochinagi for combos and so far is only used by cancelling his rdp+D.

Mature - Very fast, and in the right hands, can be pretty much the hardest character to deal with. Low A into qcb+K is super safe, can repeat on block, can combo (but obviously not repeatable into an infinite). qcb+P is easy hit confirm and safe. I think she's the best of the lot. Easy combos, good damage, hard to get away from on defense. EX fierball juggles if you didn't know.
Terry - RISING TACO has some pretty good invincibility. Buster Wolf won't continue on block. Trap Shoot is not an overhead, I think. If you ask me, I think he's pretty much the same from XII in general.

Ryo - Fireball seems to have improved slightly. His hcb+K now moves faster (thank god) than XII. Otherwise, it's very much like what he was in XII. f+A doesn't knockdown anymore but I never tried cancelling that into anything. You can sorta play him like 2k2 Ryo and it works pretty well.

Ralf - Only saw him once and I can only think of one thing...is his vulcan punch *that* invincible in XII? Seems to protect him really well if the other character is in range and trying to do something funny.

Ash - qcfx2+P is much faster now, yay. His Neomax is pretty nice but maybe aside from the Neomax vid on SNKP, since it's a grab super, most Ash players will jump in and perform that. It does look awesome, but I think it's not an instant grab...like Kyo's Kamikura before 2k2UM.
Joe - Thank god that his dp+K is slower. I don't think I'm seeing anything different aside from that.

Takuma - The stance looks weird but this guy is fierce. Has 98 Takuma's movelist but with now a bigger fierball, his db,f+D may juggle but pushes the opponent farther than before, so no zan retsu ken followup for you (maybe aside from corners). In fact, so far nobody connected anything from it yet. He has another variant of his fierball where he sorta like does his 2k2 incarnation's HSKK (the invisible one) and a fierball comes out. He also has this guard break move which allows him to followup with whatever within a short timespan. His Neomax is useful, and is well worth the stock usage. In short, he good.

Leona - Nothing I never saw before in XII, except for her EX X-slasher.

Athena - Saw her once, but I think she can set up her shield move and do other stuff while the shield is up (which lasts for a second or two I think).

Kim - Nothing else you never saw before, very much is the guy you already know about from XII and early XIII loketest feedback.

Shen Woo - Oh my gawd, I think he's probably the most toned down character from XII. The only thing I can see improving is his qcb+A's speed. Reduced range in his low D. C version of
SHEN WOO PUNCH LITE has chargeup time of around a split second regardless if you're charging or not, A version of SHEN WOO PUNCH LITE if hit is actually a 50-50 with your opponent where you can get thrown. SHEN WOO UPPERCUT is slow - I mean XII D version slow, doesn't seem to connect from weak attacks even if it's his B version (I can't fathom how slow his D version will be). Never tried SHEN WOO BITCHSLAP yet, hopefully it's at least same as XII. And yes, you can do SHEN WOO PUNCH LITE into SHEN WOO UPPERCUT once in a blue moon if he can do drive cancels. SHEN WOO GOES SSJ takes 2 stocks, lets him do more damage and does a quick closeup of him. SHEN WOO PUNCH is pretty much same as XII. So if you ask me, I think he now sucks.

Hwa Jai - Joe clone...after all this writing of Shen and his disappointments in XIII, cut me some slack here (see my post above). D:

Neomaxes I saw:
Terry - Starts off like his Power Stream (WUSS POWER!) in 2k3, but then it turns out to be like a fullscreen beam attack of sorts at the end (think zillions of geysers appearing from the ground). Super awesome.

Joe - Does a windup (like his 2k3 LDM) and then punches a hurricane forward, horizontally for major ouchage.

Ryo - Shin Tenchi Haoh Ken, but does seem to trade hits with opponent. It was used to KO so can't tell about the damage/counter damage and dizziness effect, if any.

Takuma - Shoryuken by bringing the opponent offscreen with him, and then supposedly lands with the opponent beneath him with a karate chop. In my first vid, with Kyo he apparently caused a bug which caused Kyo to slide away afterwards.

Ralf - Larf summons his inner Kenshiro fanboyism, turns red, and does something either like ZA WARUDO/ORA ORA fists of fury or Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken or whatever mango/animu multi punch. Covers the halfscreen space in front of him. After this, he needs like a second of cooldown.
Ash - It's liek...Kyo's Kamikura!

---------------------------Impressions #2---------------------------
Neomax damage seems to have some relation to your current lifebar's length.

Leona:
Not too different from XII, except for her jump qcb+A, C version follows XII. Her jump qcb+AC (EX ver) does 5 hits, the slash stays in the air. EX version good for pressuring by doing qcb,ub+AC, if it hits, you can continue with a combo.
Drive cancel combo can do: d,u+C -> b,f+B ->d,u+C loop, can do around 40% damage and pushes opponent into corner. Then you can pressure again with qcb,ub+AC afterwards.

King:
Plays like 98UM EX King. With air fierball, can stall some jumps with qcf,uf+K (low air fierball).
df+D unfortunately not cancellable. dp+K doesn't connect from weak attacks. hcb+K and qcfx2+P are good anti-airs.

Hwa Jai:
Normals are the same as Joe (pretty much), but he can cancel off his standing B while Joe can't.
dp+K: B version flies 45 degrees, has invincibility. D version flies forward, no invincibility. EX version flies forward, but if blocked will pass through the opponent.
Air dp+K: B version flies down 45 degrees. D version flies forward. EX version feels like B version so far.
For DMs, qcf, hcb+P is a running grab, can connect after f+B. Qcfx2+K is a ranbu (even though when I did it it feels like it was a slash kick).
Can consider a high-damaging Joe. Low B -> B -> f+b -> qcf, hcb+P already does 40% off. If at the corner, if working with drive cancels he'll hurt even more.

Vice:
Close D is only 1 hit. Far C cancellable. No f+A anymore, no high-low games.
No hcf+P and qcb+K.
qcb+C feels slower, but qcb+A can connect from weak attacks still. Her qcf+P followup is still around. Vice instead moves forward more for the followup instead of jumping higher. The followup somehow seems to be able to be performed on its own, but the input motion is unknown.
dp+P still unknown.
hcf+K has no damage, slower to come out. Will pull the opponent to you.

That really bugs me since they could have gave us someone else then him and I've seen him fight, and it's true that he plays like Joe.

Now I’m disappointed in this since could have bring back May Lee (http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3440/mayleeextra.jpg) from 2001/2002, she was fun to play as and was different then the rest of the fighters in Kim's team

If Atlus brings this here or someone else doesn’t matter to me much, I can't just wait to start playing this new KOF.

Pre-fight dialogues
First and formost, these are from memory and short notes so they're not word for word and lines are missing. Please don't, DON'T blame me for any mistakes. They should give you a good idea of how the dialogues go though, and should be better than nothing at all.

Iori vs Kyo
Kyo: Man, you've lost your flames, but you still haven't changed a bit, have you?
Iori: Shut up and Die, Kyo.
Kyo: Oh what's this, are you rushing for some reason? It isn't like you now, is it?
Iori: Shut up! I said die!

Yuri vs Robert
Robert: Hey Yuri, let's go out after this!
Yuri: Oh I'm sorry, I need to attend a celebration afterwards. But I'll see you at the hospital! Because I'm going to send you there!

Mai vs Raiden
Mai: Mr. Bear, is that you?
Raiden: No! I'm Raiden! I-AM-RAIDEN!
Mai: Huh? What's up with you? Why are you wearing a mask?
Raiden: Don't ask sensitive questions like that!

Yuri vs Raiden
Yuri: Is it true that you hate Koalas?
Raiden: That's right. Koalas, you can't understand a thing that they're thinking.
Yuri: But Koalas are bears too!
Raiden: No! A bear and a Koala is different! Don't put them together!

Yuri vs Vice
Vice: Cripes, your voice just gives me headaches! I need to shut you up!

Yuri vs Mature
Yuri: An eye patch! What happened to your eye? Did you have an accident? Are you diseased?
Mature: Oh no, it's not something like that. Would you like to see it?
Yuri: Erm, I have a bad feeling about it... No thanks, I'll pass.

Mai vs Hwa Jai
Mai: Oh my God, another guy that's just wearing nothing but boxers!
Hwa: What? So you know about Joe?

King vs Mature
Mature: Oh, what a beauty we have here! You're just as beautiful as a rose.
King: Well watch out, because this rose has thorns!
Mature: I enjoy ripping pedals off from beautiful roses. It must be wonderful to see and hear you in agony too.

King vs Elisabeth
King: Looks like you've got class. Why not come have a drink at my bar when we're finished?
Elisabeth: Yes, let us drink-- to my victory!

Athena vs Ash
Athena: I didn't realize it before, but you have a strong will... you're determined to do something.
Ash: And so what? Not like I want anyone to understand.

Athena vs Athena
Athena: Huh? What is this? Are we having some kind of an event or something?

Loketest!!

Hello, it's Kukino.

I would like to thank all of you who came, last weekend, to the location tests in Tokyo's Shinjuku and Osaka's Nanba!

What did you think of the refined Takuma, the cool beauty Vice and the mad Hwa-Jai?
And of course, the NeoMAX SDMs!
Did you enjoy them?

Personally, while I was working on the development of these moves, I can't tell how many times I went like "Woooooohooo, Badass!".
The way these supers are unleashed and the way you get hit, have a considerable "mental damage" on your opponent... especially when a crowd is watching.
As soon as you enter in Hyper Drive Mode, you can feel he's wondering "Will it come out? Will it? Damn it, he got me!!"

During the loketests, it was a relief and so much delight for everyone in the development team to see the look on people's faces whether the ones playing or the others waiting in the lines, when NeoMAXs were used. I couldn't help but feel happy.
Some of my favorites are Kim's and Athena's. Well, There's still more to come to Athena's NM's enjoyment...
Anyway, be sure to try it fully!

Like always, based on your valuable opinions expressed in each time's questionnaires, we will be sure to relentlessly keep working on the game until the end.
Please look forward to it!

I'm really sorry for troubling you with yet another update about players with no new info.

Also, loketests are being organized across the country!
Everyone in Tokyo, -with the exception of Osaka-, be sure to take a taste of the hot KOF XIII at your nearest loketest store!
I too will be heading to the one near home!!!

Yagami's team story

Although this region is known for its hot weather, that night was all but hot. Sometimes, strong winds were even blowing…
Indeed, what woke Chizuru Kagura was not heat; it was more of an evil presence feeling.
“…”
She took a look at the Shoji facing the garden. Beautiful shining blue-ish light of the full moon were illuminating the room.
Suddenly, a long thin silhouette drew up in the shoji. Noticing it, Chizuru’s went completely alarmed.
“Huh! Who’s there?”
Chizuru realized her inexperience as she asked for the person’s identity in a concealed voice. Quickly thinking back the situation, this familiar silhouette that went unnoticed through the garden. Before seeing him, she had already figured it out.
Chizuru felt ashamed of her own inexperience as it seemed obvious who the mysterious visitor was.
“…you’ve become such a coward, Kagura”
A small derisive laughter briefly showed.
“You too…”
Chizuru closed her white summer undershirt that partially exposed her chest, and then sat on her futon.
“You too, you lost your flames, didn’t you?”
“So what?”
Before that arrogant answer, Chizuru remained silent.
Even though his purple flames were lost, his strength definitely is not. The Kagura residence is extremely well guarded place with countless strong bodyguards… Just the fact that he is standing before her right now, means there is no doubt about his strength.
For Chizuru, whose self-confidence was greatly affected when she lost the powers of the mirror, it was clear that it was not the case for him. Thinking about that, she was biting her lips in anger…
“I came here to see whether you regained your powers yet… As I thought, it seems that brat will just have to be taken care of.”
Said the man as he turned to take his leave. Chizuru reached for him in confusion.
“Wait, Yagami! This might be your only chance!”
“…What chance?”
“For the last 660 years, the Yagami flames you wield have been affected by Orochi’s evil power. But, now that the flames and the Magatama were lost… now… now, maybe it’s your only chance to free your family from Orochi’s curse.”
“Nonsense!”
Chizuru’s complaint made the man laugh.
“… I’m who I am. I don’t give a damn about the Yagami family line whatsoever!”
“Yagami---”
Chizuru was intending to talk him on it, only then did she realize how inconsistent her request was.
The Yagami Family flames, which power come from the Yasakani Magatama--- If these flames are bonded to the Orochi blood, then freeing himself from Orochi would inevitably mean abandoning his flames forever.
But it also means that one of the 3 sacred treasures, used to seal Orochi, would be lost forever.
Chizuru’s face turned pale with such a dilemma.
“Rest assured. Your mirror will get back to you soon.”
Chizuru remained silent, and the man greeted her while taking his leave.
“… However, next thing to be lost is the Sword”
“Stop, Yagami!”
Chizuru quickly got out of her futon, opened the Shoji and rushed out of the room.
However, there was only a silent garden bathed in the shining light of the full moon. The figure of the redheaded man was nowhere to be seen.

◆◇◆◇◆

The old bridge was shaking considerably every time a truck was passing by the road under it.
Endlessly exposed to wind and rain, its coating wore off all over and its rusty spikes smelled as like the remains of some huge dead animal.
Walking slowly past a spike, Iori Yagami stopped for a while and gazed up at the moon.
“….”
The cigarette in his right hand was slowly burning out… Suddenly, burnt out ashes fell on the ground.
“… What business do dead-like people have with me?”
With a cool-headed look, he lowered his head from the sky towards a spot at the ground next to the bridge where was gathering a deep black shadow.
“Holding a grudge against me? Or is it going to be “Kill me please” once again?”
After Iori said that, the dark shadow responded.
“Such a greeting, Yagami… Although it’s been a long time since we last met”
“Staring at the sky once again… Didn’t we say it before? That we shall meet someday again in a full moon night.”
“-----”
Hearing those charming women voices, Iori didn’t move a single eyebrow.
As Iori was watching, the shadow was writhing in agony. Quietly, but surely, it started to gradually take shape.
Finally, once it stood out from a 2D world to a 3D one, the shadow had shaped into two beautiful ladies. (Now, I am raising an eyebrow)
The man tossed his cigarette. He narrowed his eyes then muttered.
“…Then it must be some sort lingering affection that made come out”
“Affection? There’s no such a thing”
The redheaded Vice grandly twisted her stretched body, as she talked. The shape of her body concealed in black pants was completely reminiscent of that of a large snake.
“---- Originally we weren’t planning to come out.”
“Then, why are you here?”
“Well, I wonder why… Couldn’t it be because you guys were disappointing beyond expectations?”
A distinctive eye patch showed on Mature’s clear face. The blonde lady moved her shiny red lips to answer Iori’s sarcasm.
-----------------
“… What are talking about?”
“After Kagura, it was Yagami’s turn… It seems even you got tricked, weren’t you? Deceived by that Ash Crimson boy!”
“And on top of that, it looks like his strange colleagues are aiming at Orochi’s power. You know, the ones who call themselves “those from the distant land”“
“… Whatever, I don’t care”
“That sure sounds like you. Because, all you ever care about is yourself, right?”
“However, it does matters for us. We can’t let it happen!”
“We can’t possibly allow Orochi’s power to be helplessly exposed, now can we?”
“And that’s why we came back.”
Burdened in darkness, their 3 eyes (Vice’s 2 + Mature’s 1) were suspiciously shining. Vice and Mature, both are supposed to have been killed at Iori’s own hands.
Iori put his hands in his pockets, and then spoke.
“It’s nice of you to bear the consequences of Kagura’s mistake. … Still, what the hell the two of you can do?”
“Weeeeeell…However if we join forces, then there must be something we can do. Right?”
“Your aim is the boy; ours is the other guys… If we keep advancing in the tournament, we will run into them sooner or later.”
“…The same ridiculous mockery again!”
“Indeed. But, using that ridiculous mockery is the fastest way to find them. And for this to work we’ll need to be teammates, even if it’s for the mere formalities. Get it, Yagami-kun?”
“Hmph---”
With that sound, Iori walked away indifferently. Passing next to Vice and Mature, he continued his way down the bridge.
Without stopping to speak, he added.
“I’ll warn you in advance. If it turns out to be useless for me---”
““Then I’ll have no more use for you!” Right? ………..we’ll keep it in mind.”
Vice’s suppressed laugh was slowly fading out.
“We’re excited as well! Excited about the extents of your strength after losing your flames. -----But since it’s you, we probably won’t be disappointed.”
“…Even dead, it seems you’re as smooth talker as ever”
At the bridge exit, he stopped then looked back over his shoulder.
The two ladies’ shadowy shapes were nowhere, and all Iori could see was the blue moon shining in the clear dark sky.
“…………………”
Iori took out another cigarette, and lit it up with his lighter that he has been using for a while.
The thin smoke of the tossed cigarette rose up towards the full moon night sky, while a red flickering light was glowing from the silhouettes lurking in the dark.

Here's the latest blog translation.

eah it's basically talking about Ash' moves and how he's changed since the previous game etc. Let's see how much of this I can translate before my flight starts boarding, lol.

Q: So let's talk about Ash's special characteristics.

Yamamoto:
Ash has two key ranged attack capabilities with his Ventose (that comes out with different speeds depending on the light or heavy version) and his Genie which is a ranged attack that stays in place. His basic style is to look at the opponent's reaction and respond with the appropriate anti-air measures.

He has strong defense, but is also a great offensive character. Since he has strong defense even without having any gauge, he's able to use his power stocks for offensive purposes if needed. For instance he can use his Sans-Culotte DM to augment his offensive capabilities, gaining the ability to do his moves without charging, and to cancel moves that couldn't previously be cancelled.

You could call him a character that's like a fortress with no weaknesses, I suppose.

Yamaguchi:
He also has a bunch of moves that he gained for story reasons, based on Chizuru's power that he stole in KOF2003, and Iori's power that he stole in KOF XI.

Q: Please tell us about the new moves he's gained since KOF XII.

Yamamoto:
Just like Mr Yamaguchi said earlier, he's gained the Germinar that uses Chizuru's power, as well as Frutidore (sp?) which uses Iori's power. Frutidore is his NeoMAX DM. He may gain some additional moves beyond those two as well.

Q: In KOF XI, the Germinar had the ability to seal the opponent's special moves. Is that still the case?

Yamamoto:
Yes it is. On top of that in KOF XI even if you hit with the move your opponent would usually tag out quickly - since the multi-shift system is absent this time around, it should become a much more useful move.

Yamaguchi:
Also pay attention to the graphics on the move - once you hit with the move, the opponent's power gauge and hyperdrive gauge will become greyed out.

Yamamoto:
By the way, you do the move as an immediate followup from the Sans-culotte.

Q: What is Fructidor like?

Yamamoto:
Fructidor is a throw move. It's a NeoMAX DM, so it's quite powerful. You can think of it as a powerful addition that lets you crush your opponent.

Yamaguchi:
We might change the animation of this move somewhat from the version that was usable at the location test.

Q: What about the EX versions of his special moves?

Yamamoto:
Most of Ash' EX moves do multiple hits. In particular I'd like to call attention to his EX Genie. Unlike the regular version, the EX version activates fast on contact with the opponent, like an explosion, so it's not possible to escape by dashing or jumping. In addition, the explosion does multiple hits, so you can easily use it to start a combo. Of course, the fact that you can put this out anywhere on the screen makes it very difficult for the opponent to approach you.

In any case it's effective just by placing it on the screen. It's a 'disgusting' move that fits pretty well with Ash' image, isn't it?

Q: Are there any other moves we should take note of?

Yamamoto:
His Thermidor has faster startup and a smaller window of vulnerability, so it's a lot easier to use.
On top of that because it moves slowly, it's hard to avoid by jumping or rolling, and blocking it will cause the opponent to take tick damage. In addition while they're blocking you can mix up high and low attacks - much like the EX Genie I mentioned before, it's a move that will cause disgust in your opponent just by you throwing it out there.
Ash has a lot of moves that allow him to show off - I suppose it's an extension of his personality (laughs).
To anyone who uses Ash, I encourage you to play him in a way that creates advantageous situations for you.

Yamaguchi:
He's very much a character aimed at people who want to mess with and provoke their opponents.

Thank you very much. Next week we'll talk about the three members of the Elisabeth Team. Please look forward to it!

From Zamalek of Cyberfanatix

note for who doesn't know.

The mid-game demo has no new information, the same that was said before.

I was surfing YouTube and found a Spanish translated version of the mid-game demo and tried to translate it using Google translator and found that

Spanish:-

ROSE: "Este ano, el torneo The King of fighters, es celebrado

... me eres completamente inutil...
MUKAI: Entendido senor.

The English translation:
ROSE: "This year, The King of Fighters tournament is held
entirely by the Bernstein Foundation
The money?, No problem "

BOTAN: "Things are working according to plan ...
having the tournament arena is located just above the place of rest during Orochi ...
dimension only remains open. "

Botan is doing an excellent job in the KOF tournament

DARK ASH: So you're Mukai right? ... are completely useless to me ...
MUKAI: If so, forgive me sir ...
ASH: "After the death of Magaki and the disappearance of Shion ... we have no more than an opportunity ...
mmm, I see
... Guys should all die? his life is worthless ...
... At least they can make good use of it. "
MUKAI: Understood sir.

Nothing new. I think I have read it in the forum before.

Anyway here's the latest blog translation by SonicTempest!

This week and next week, we'll be updating the KOF XIII site and blog on Friday.

Anyway, this week we'll be talking about the abilities and moves of the Elisabeth team. Continuing from last time we have the game design director, Mr Yamamoto and the art director Mr Yamaguchi with us.

---

Q: Please tell us about Elisabeth's special characteristics.

Yamamoto:
She has an excellent striking attack in her Coup de Veine (dp+P), a command throw in her Mistral (HCB,f+P) and a counter move in her Reverie Jure, making her a good all-rounder. Just like her personality, there's no fooling around or uselessness in her moves.

Q: Please tell us about the moves she's gained since KOF XII.

Yamamoto:
She gained Coup de Veine and Grand Rafale from KOF XI. Coup de Veine is a rush move, and there are significant differences between the weak and strong versions. Specifically, the weak version can be easily used in combos since it has fast startup, while the strong version has slow startup but can be used to counter fireballs since it has a lot of invincibility. Use the right version depending on the situation.

Grand Rafale is a powered-up version of Coup de Veine, and is fast enough to connect from pretty much anything. You can use it as a pursuit attack after the weak version of Coup de Veine, so if you're going to use it, that would be the best time.

In addition, she's gained a far D attack with long reach.

Q: What about her EX specials and DMs?

Yamamoto:
A lot of Elisabeth's EX moves are such that they allow followups that wouldn't be possible with the normal versions of the moves. For instance, the EX version of Reverie Jure causes the opponent to be stunned for a longer time after the counter activates. Similarly the EX version of Mistral allows you to follow up after throwing the opponent. If you want to do big damage, go for her EX attacks.

Yamaguchi:
I also recommend Noble Blanche (QCFx2+P). The spheres of light in the EX version will move forward, towards your opponent. It's sort of like creating a wall, and then knocking it down; it fulfills the purpose of stopping and reversing the opponent's advance, while also acting as a projectile attack. Pretty convenient.

Q: Next, let's talk about Shen's special characteristics.

Yamamoto:
He's a power character who specializes in striking attacks. Since he's a character who can leave the opponent no counterattack window by continuing to attack relentlessly, and can cause guard crushes really easily, you can enjoy a 'bulldozer' style of play with him.

Conversely, he has poor anti-air so he's weak when forced on the defensive. If you get close to your opponent, don't allow them to counterattack.

Q: Does he have any moves that were added since KOF XII?

Yamamoto:
By popular demand from the location tests, we've re-added his Danken (Hajiki) (HCB,f+P). In KOF XI it was an anti-projectile move but in KOF XII it was a throw move. The KOF XIII version of this move has two variations - Danken (Hajiki) that serves as an anti-projectile move, and Danken which is still a throw move. Just like in KOF XI, Danken (Hajiki) has pretty potent capabilities - give it a shot and see what moves you can repel with it.

In addition, we've added a far D attack for him. It's a side kick with long range. Since he has very few normal moves with long range (just like Elisabeth) we think this should be a pretty valuable tool.

Q: What about the EX versions of his moves?

Yamamoto:
The EX version of Zetsu! Gekiken (aka SHEN WOO PUNCH) is a pretty useful move for counterattacks. Since it has a lot of invincibility while he moves forward, you can use it to pass through enemy fireballs if you time it correctly. It has enough invincibility to counter a Chou Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi!

In addition, the EX version of Danken (his command throw) lets you follow up with more attacks afterwards.

Q: What's his NEOMAX DM like?

Yamamoto:
It's a charging attack with fast startup called 'Tenshou Bakushingeki'. It connects even in situations where other moves might not. Because of its speed, it's useful as both a counterattack move as well as a combo move.

Yamaguchi:
It's a cool move that really fits the character.

Q: And finally, tell us about Duo Lon.

Yamamoto:
He's a powerful offensive character just like Shen, but the sense you get when playing him is completely different, shall we say. His having a lot of moves with low lag, and his ability to move quickly using his teleport makes him a speed character with the capability to startle his opponent.

Yamaguchi:
To put it simply, KOF XIII's Duo Lon feels like the return of 2003's Duo Lon. After knocking the opponent down, you can follow up with his teleport and confuse the opponent with as to which way they have to block.

Yamamoto:
He also has the characteristic of being strong against fireballers. First off he can counter their fireballs with his Genmukyaku (dp+K), and recover fast enough to block in time, making the opponent's fireballs not very useful.

Q: Tell us about the new moves he's gained since KOF XII.

Yamamoto:
He's gained a slow fireball move called "Juon Shikon". You can do this move and teleport behind the opponent to sandwich them between your two moves. It's a move that really plays to Duo Lon's strengths of confusing the opponent's guard, so please use it.

Q: Tell us about the EX versions of his moves.

Yamamoto:
The most important one is his EX Juon Shikon. It becomes a multiple hit fireball, making it easier to play mind games with the opponent's guard. The EX version of his DM Hiden Genmubakkoshikon has long invincibility, making it good for defeating the opponent's projectile attacks. Also, this isn't just limited to Duo Lon, but since a lot of EX DMs have high priority, please use them to their greatest effectiveness.

---

Thank you very much.
Next week, we'll talk about the three members of the Japan team.

I was really disappointed with KOFXII. Sometimes I wish SNK would just let this series die, its been downhill after 98 and they'll never even reach that peak again.

KOFXII was such an utterly trash game. They even butchered move lists, hope you love quarter-circles.

I'm of the opinion that no one should localize this. Keep it in Japan, do not hurt your fan-base more.

Latest blog entry translation by sonic Tempest

Hello, it's Yuzuko.

With the revealing of the K' team's last member, Kula, all the playable characters have finally shown up.
Well then, we continue the team introduction series of posts which started on 4/28 with the Garou team (Terry/Andy/Joe). Those who use them should surely pay close attention! As usual, to get information on the characters' abilities, I talked to the game design director, Mr Yamamoto and the game art director, Mr Yamaguchi.

Q: Jumping right in, what new moves has Terry gained since KOF XII? His DM 'Buster Wolf' is one of them isn't it?
Yamamoto: Yes. Buster Wolf is a high speed charging attack. It goes without saying, but it's the fastest move Terry has in his repertoire. Because the startup is fast, you can use it to interrupt strings of attacks. It's also useful in combos.

Q: There's an EX version too, right? How does it change?
Yamamoto: Of course, there's an EX version. The invincibility on the EX version is longer, allowing you to beat the opponent's attacks even if you do it early.
Yamaguchi: In addition the EX version has a different animation from the normal version. When the EX version hits, the animation is similar to the Garou MOW version in that he retreats slightly when blasting the opponent. We've also increased the hitpause when the attack connects, for both the normal and the EX versions. Please do try it out if you get the opportunity.

Q: What's his NEOMAX DM like?
Yamamoto: The name of the move is 'Trinity Geyser.' It's a tremendously powered-up version of his Power Geyser where he creates several Power Geysers on screen at once.
Yamaguchi: You would have seen this at the recent location tests, but we changed the 'impact' of the startup portion of this move. When he raises his hands above his head, you can see blue energy effects gathering near them. In addition, we've made the animation of the attack a bit slower than it was before. We also changed the fire effect that shows up when he strikes the ground, making it clearer. It looks basically like a series of Power Waves (from Fatal Fury 1) that are appearing and disappearing one after the other. I've always thought it'd be nice for Terry to have a move like this, so it's a deep emotional moment for me.

<video of Terry NeoMAX>

Q: A lot of people used Terry during the location tests, so it seems like he's the main pick for a lot of players out there. How would you suggest he should be played?
Yamamoto: It might seem difficult to use drive cancels with Terry, but in fact the landing frames of his Burn Knuckle can be drive cancelled out of, so you can cancel out of that move to start a combo. I think you'll be able to combo fairly easily from there.

<video of Terry drive cancel combo>

Q: What sorts of moves has Andy gained from KOF XII?
Yamamoto: He's gained his 'Geki Hishouken' DM. It's a move with no obvious frontal weaknesses where he gathers an energy vortex in front of him and shoots it forward. You can do things like super cancel it off a connected Zan'eiken.
In addition, since Andy has the 'breaking' capability from Garou MOW on his Kuuhadan, he's very user-friendly and has a lot of practical combos.

Q: Anything special about his EX moves or DMs?
Yamaguchi: It's a little boring, but EX Shouryuudan (his uppercut) has longer invincibility and does two hits.

Q: What about his NEOMAX DM?
Yamamoto: It's called 'Chou Shin Soku Zan'eiken'. Since the NEOMAX system is one of the selling points of the system this time around, we made this move really flashy. It's really fast!
Yamaguchi: You can do it not just on the ground, but in the air, too.

<video of Andy NeoMAX>

If you K.O. an opponent with it, you'll get to see a special winpose too.

Q: Anything else worth mentioning?
Yamamoto: Some of his commands have been changed from the location test. Zan'eiken has had its charge time removed, making it easier to pull out in rapid succession. I can now recommend it without reservations.

Q: Finally, what moves have been added to Joe since KOF XII?
Yamamoto: He's regained 'Ougon no Kakato' (QCB+K). It's a move where he drops his feel on the opponent while jumping. It's been a very useful move throughout the KOF series, so this is good news, isn't it? In addition, he's gained his DM 'Bakuretsu Hurricane Tiger Kakato'.

Q: Please tell us about his EX moves.
Yamamoto: The EX version of Ougon no Kakato has very little lag on landing, so if it hits on a grounded opponent you can connect followup attacks. Pay attention to the timing and definitely give it a try.
Yamaguchi: The EX version of Hurricane Upper has him firing three tornadoes instead of one. The EX version of Screw Upper becomes 'Slide Screw' - in other words a tornado that moves horizontally across the screen. (ST: Sooo it's the SDM version then?)

Q: Please tell us about his NEOMAX DM.
Yamamoto: It's called 'Screw Straight.' A horizontal tornado materializes right next to Joe, just like a drill.

<video of Joe NeoMAX>

Yamaguchi: Just like Terry's move this is one that I've been hoping to do for a long time but only just had my wish granted. It was hard to do during the NEOGEO era because of hardware restrictions...
I'm happy it showed up this time.

Thank you very much.
Today we've also released a promotional video. Please do watch it!

Andy more noob-accessible? He's one of those characters that neither I or my friends ever used (along with Chang and Choi (good riddance!). I'm pretty hyped about Joe's Neomax, and the fact that they didn't screw around with K' 's staple moves.

SonicTempest's quick translation regarding China Team Blog :

- Athena regained teleport and command throw. Teleport can be used in combos now e.g. DP .P drive cancel qcf .K drive cancel DP .P or mid-air QCB .K drive cancel qcf .K drive cancel DP .P
- Psychic Reflector QCB .K is a striking attack as well as a projectile reflector, and even works on DM projectiles.
- She can do different types of combos in the middle of the screen and is generally more flexible to play as - particularly her DP .P and fwd .B make this possible
- Apparently her mid-air Shining Crystal Bit HCB HCB .P has a different startup animation.
- EX Psycho Ball is slower but does multiple hits. You can follow up if it hits on an opponent in mid-air. Practically you can do something like DP .P (1 hit) DC QCB .A .C , continue.
- EX Phoenix Arrow just makes it easier to follow up with a combo after it hits.
- EX Psychic Sword has fast startup and invincibility, so it's good as a defensive move
- EX SCB sucks the opponent in for multiple hits. Good for a 'turnaround' move.
- There are different enders to her NeoMAX DM - no other details given
- Yamaguchi jokes about wanting to make Athena go on a diet (lol)
- Kensou regained Chokyuudan ( QCB .P , his fireball) and Ryuusougeki (mid-air QCB .P , his diving attack), as well as a fake backstep (similar to the short backstep in KOFXII)
- Apparently his nikuman appears somewhere in one of his moves
- EX Ryuutouda (KOF XII QCB .A ...don't know what the command is now) lets you follow up 5 times as opposed to the regular version's 3 times (not sure about this translation)
- EX Ryuusougeki does multiple hits when Kensou lands, so it grants you a greater advantage
- His NeoMAX is called 'Seime: Senki Hakkei'. (command is qcf qcf .A .C ). He creates a ball of energy in front of him and hits the opponent multiple times. Useful for chipping.
- He has a lot of moves that do multiple hits, so try and get a 99-hit combo with him! (There's a video that shows one such combo)
- Chin has gained Kaitenteki Kuutotsuken (ground dash + uppercut move, HCF .K ), Inshu (drinking move) and Tetsuzankou.
- Tetsuzankou is a DM that can only be done while drinking, where he charges into the opponent with his back and knocks them down. Wires on counter.
- EX Suiho ( QCB .P ) is a counter move that allows you to do a ranbu afterwards.
- EX Kaitenteki Kuutotsuken has its speed and range increased
- His NeoMAX is 'Suisou: Gouran Enpou' ( qcf qcf .B .D ). Chin breathes flames which you can direct with the stick. On the ground you can direct it in 5 directions while in mid-air you can make it go in all 8 directions.

Next week they're going to take a break from the team introductions and instead talk about game modes.

KOFXIII is going to be at this years E3 and it's confirmed it has a console release for the PS3 and XBOX360!

Yes, you're right. This looks just as bad as KOF XII. Who cares if there's a lot more characters, including some fan favorites who were absent in XII, and if those who were in XII got most of their old moves back? And who cares if it's gonna have a story and three bosses, whereas XII didn't have a single one? Or if it's gonna have more than a couple backgrounds and a much better soundtrack? It's not like any of that matters at all, right?

I mean, there's a lot more improvements they could have done. Like putting a 9 and an 8 somewhere in the title. And having Rugal as a boss for the millionth time. Now that'd be awesome.

Another storyline question: is the Yasakani heirloom still tainted by Orochi?

videoman

Translated by YasakaniHeir.

With the severe photographing restrictions that were in place at the loketest, it was really hard to film anything... However, K' and Kula are definitely strong. In his NEOMAX Hyper Chain Drive , he unleashes a huge pillar of fire that surrounds him, think of something like Nameless's HSDM in KOF 2k2 UM. Towards the end of it, you can continue from his Shell.
Kula's Neo Freeze Execution starts with Foxy and Diana swiftly piercing the opponent as they repeat 'Dance like a butterfly, sting like a bee!', only for Kula to finish it with her execution.
Maxima's Maxima Laser is in fact a showy version of the last beam from his KOF 2k2 UM. It seems to be hard to avoid.

NB:
White Ash's name is Saiki (could be Psyche like Ice-Kun said). He is seen after the 6th match with the overall championship victory and Rose's congratulations. At that time, the scene changes and he is shown talking to members of 'those from a distant land' about whether they managed or not to gather enough energy to initiate the ceremony. He gets mad at them. Ash (normal one) is shown then in some mysterious place trying to start something.

NB2:
* The damage for K' Hyper Chain Drive is around 70%.
* Kula's taunt sees her creating a snowman (Falling Snowman from KOF:MI?)
* Almost all of Kula's quotes are about ice.
* In her victory screen against King, she mimics a waitress.
* If anyone gets the opportunity to go to the loketest, be make sure to check out the opening sequence (intro). The animation is more than amazing! Ash moving all slimy! It also seems like Kyo and Iori will join forces once again to face the enemy...!?

According to reports from the current beta test, taunts have returned, done with the start button.

Reports from Twitter & etc:
Maxima: Crosses his arms and says something
King: Throws a rose
Clark: Does a fist-pump pose and says "Hey C'mon!"
Kensou: Does a choukyuudan, but a bun drops out instead of a projectile
Kyo: The usual taunt? "Anta ja moenee na"
Kim: Does four kicks, then glitters his teeth
It seems like some of the characters (Iori, Leona, etc) have slightly modified versions of their victory poses as their taunts. Hopefully this will be changed in the final release.

For some crazy reason, I can picture Robert Garcia, having an alternate taunt (specifically, Dan Hibiki's).

Going back to Iori, I wonder if Vice and Mature joined him, just to keep an eye on him, seeing how Ash stole the Orochi-tainted Yasakani heirloom, which effectively frees him from the Orochi curse, which you verified.

Technically, this means he's no longer subjected to Riot of the Blood, or is still he?

On the second page at the bottom there is the Yagami Team story to explain the questions you have.

Vice and Mature joined Iori in order to stop the Those from the Past/Distant Land from getting the Orochi power. Yea I think he can't turn into ROTB anymore without the Orochi's curse.

Speaking of the Ikari Team, I found this fan-made video about Ralf, becoming into a Fist of the North Star reference, due to his NEO MAX.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM8z8BzOu-c

PS: I forgot to think of this earlier, while it's been established that Kyo wields his family heirloom in his body and Ash is after that, I know this sounds crazy, but there's a way for Kyo to have a loophole on that: K'.

Specifically, K' gets his unstable Kusanagi flames absorbed by Ash, then Kyo gets to keep his family heirloom.

What do you think? That would make it into an exciting twist, no?

Here's the System in detail
You can perform Ex moves which will cost one power stock (Which they are power up versions of the special moves)

The Hyperdrive (HD) gauge fills up automatically. You can perform drive cancels when the HD gauge is at half way(You can cancel any move with this one. and finaliy HyperDrive mode you can perform this when the gauge is full! In this mode you can cancel any move and you perfom the NeoMax DM (which is the character's ultimate move!) when you have at least 2 power stocks!

If you want to know more you can go to the cyberfanatix.com or orochinagi.com they know more about this game than I do!

- Ralf has regained Kyuukouka Bakudan Punch (air qcf .P ), Gatling Attack ( sonicboom .P ) and Umanori Vulcan Punch ( QCBHCF .P ). Generally has more combo possibilities, with quite a few tricky combos.
- EX Burning Hammer ( qcf .P ) causes the opponent to collapse slowly, and allows for followup attacks.
- EX Galactica Phantom ( qcf qcf .P ) has faster startup than the normal version
- His NeoMAX is Jet Vulcan Punch ( HCB HCB .A .C ), which as you've seen in the videos is a rapid multiple punch super.
- Clark has regained Gatling Attack ( sonicboom .P ) and a followup, Death Rake Drive (? no idea what the command is), which is a jumping grab.
- His EX command grab moves have more range (omg). Makes opponents play much more carefully when Clark has gauge.
- His EX UAB has a special animation where the screen zooms in as he catches the opponent.
- His NeoMAX is a charging move called 'Ultra Clark Buster' ( HCB HCB .B .D ). You can MAX Cancel it from his UAB.
- Leona has gained a new DM 'Slash Saber', which is a powered up version of her Grand Saber ( sonicboom .K ).
- EX X-Caliber (air QCB .P ) creates a slash that persists in mid air and does multiple hits. Use it to lock the opponent in blockstun while you try and overcome their guard.
- Any attack that uses 2 stocks or more causes Leona's hair to change colour.
- EX V-Slasher has a more dramatic animation where the power builds up and explodes as she hits the top of the 'V'
- Her NeoMAX is 'Leona Blade' ( QCBHCF .A .C ), where she spears the opponent with a blade of energy coming from her arm.

Wew, Blog footnotes/translations from Sonic Tempest of Orochi Nagi:

Today's blog entry talks a lot about Mai before going into mechanical changes for the three characters of the Women Fighters Team.

MAI SHIRANUI:

- KOF XIII Mai was designed to feel more like the Garou Densetsu/Fatal Fury version rather than the KOF version, specifically how in the FF version she's portrayed as more of a serious martial artist compared to the KOF version where she has a lot of moves that emphasize her, uh, attributes. Because of this she doesn't have too many 'sexy' animations, except for one animation in particular (which they didn't specify)

- This also extends to her movelist and in-game properties, where she was designed using her Fatal Fury Special version as the base, with strong pokes and a good Ryuuenbu (qcb+P).

- EX Ryuuenbu knocks the opponent up high and has very little lag on finish, making followup attacks possible.

- EX Kachousen (qcf+P) has piercing properties and travels fast, helping address the fact that Mai isn't too good at projectile wars since her fireball is slow and her high jump makes it easy to hit her out of the air if she tries to jump over the opponent's fireballs.

- Her NeoMAX is a move called 'Shiranuiryuu: Kunoichi no Mai' (qcf, hcb+AC). She jumps off the wall and dives diagonally downwards. If the dive connects she'll proceed with the rest of the attack where she tackles the opponent in mid-air repeatedly, spelling the characters 'ku - no - ichi'.

- You can use her air (down+B) to confuse the opponent as to which direction they have to block as she comes down.

- Mai and Andy's 10th alt colors are based off Hokutomaru's color scheme.

KING:

- King is based off her Ryuuko no Ken/Art of Fighting version. For instance her Tornado Kick (hcb+K) is based off the AOF2/KOF'95 version where she spins once and kicks twice. The influence extends to her outfit as well.

- However, the ability to do her Venom Strike (qcf+K) in midair is new to this game. It has low lag, and because it travels at a relatively high distance above the ground it's hard to jump over.

- The air version of EX Venom Strike is especially good. She lands much faster than she does with the regular version, which allows her to follow up with Tornado Kick or Trap Shot (dp+K). It also travels faster than the regular Venom Strike.

- The regular version of Surprise Rose (qcf(x2)+p) is the KOF2002UM version, but the EX version is the original AOF2 version. It's a very important move for King whose anti-air capabilities are otherwise poor.

- Her NeoMAX is 'Venom Shot' (qcb (x2)+BD) where she fires a giant Venom Strike like a shotgun. It's the fastest fireball in the game, but since it scatters into multiple fireballs while travelling, it's a little tricky to get all of the particles to hit. The piercing properties of the move are very similar to the Haohshoukouken, so it will probably beat out most other fireballs in the game.

YURI SAKAZAKI:

- Yuri always 'borrows' someone's moves with every new KOF (lol). This time her new move is Yuri Raijin Kyaku (down+b in mid-air). This is the dive kick move that you've seen in a bunch of match videos already. It's a very important part of her offense. You can use it to avoid uppercuts by diving right before they hit you, or to confuse the opponent's guard by doing it right above them.

- Another new move is 'Houyoku' (don't know the command). When you do this move, she jumps forward. If you press (punch) she does a striking attack. If you press (kick) she does Yuri Raijin Kyaku, and if you press (A+C) she does a throw (ST: wtf, stealing more moves from Akuma?)

- She used to have a move called Yuri Gen'ei Kyaku, that was like Robert's move of the same name. However it was removed because the strong point of that move is its reach, which didn't really fit with Yuri's generally short range on her moves. It was replaced with Kuuga/Yuri Chou Upper (dp+P).

- EX Hyakuretsu Binta (hcb+K) is a striking move instead of a running grab. It also has more invincibility so you can use it to go through fireballs.

- EX Raiouken (qcf+K in mid-air) fires off two projectiles at slightly different angles, allowing Yuri to control a bit more space.

- The final hit of her EX Hien Hou'ou Kyaku (QCF,HCB + K) has a special animation to it.

- Her NeoMAX is 'Haoh Raiouken' (qcb (x2)+AC), where she jumps up and throws a projectile that causes a multi-hit explosion when it lands. Good for chipping, and pretty hard for the opponent to avoid.

Next week's update is about the Yagami team.

KOF XIII TECHNICAL REFERENCE VIDEO CHAPTER 1: ASH CRIMSON

Athe the Blog Tranlation of the Yagami Team
Blog translation once again handeled by the awesome SonicTempest of OrochiNagi!:

Translating the Yagami team blog entry.

IORI

- Iori's strength is the many ways he can attack when he's at close range. In particular he has low jumps which make his jump attacks hard to counter. On top of that he has his Sotoshiki: Yurifuri (+ in mid-air) and his command grab 203 Shiki: Tsuchitsubaki (+), making him a character with a lot of offensive options. In addition he has a new move Sotoshiki: Kui (+) which is an overhead, further improving his offensive capabilities.

- They thought about what sort of moves to give Iori to bring out his ferociousness in spite of losing his flames, and they settled on the image of him tearing things to shreds with his nails.

- EX 401 Shiki: Shougetsu (+) has Iori move forward more than the regular version. It's also invincible until the attack comes out, and gives Iori frame advantage on block.

- EX 104 Shiki: Nueuchi (+) gains invincibility and does 3 hits, making it a good anti-air move as well as a good move for interrupting attacks.

- EX Forbidden 1211 Shiki: Yaotome (+) makes the background turn red on the final hit. The same goes for the EX versions of Mature's and Vice's DMs.

- It also has longer invincibility, making it good (again) for anti-air or interrupting other attacks.

- His NeoMAX is a new move called Forbidden 1218 Shiki: Yatagarasu (+), where he slashes violently above him in an arc. It's slow on startup, but has good priority and is great in combos. If you connect it at the moment the move starts up the move's animation looks like the KOF'96 Yagami team ending where Iori slaughters his teammates.

- They changed the animation in response to feedback from location tests that the move looked too plain (:lol).

- They've re-added Iori's close B attack, to at least make his normals feel like they used to, even though his specials have completely changed.

- Iori's 10th color matches the color scheme of his old outfit. At the second location test they added a crescent to the back of this outfit to make it match the old one more closely, and it became the most popular colour chosen (:lol).

- They indicated that Iori's ending will be something to look forward to.

MATURE

- Mature is a fast character with lots of moves just like in previous games (I guess the KOFXII version doesn't count). This time you can use her Ebony Tears (+/) as a shield to advance behind just like in previous games, so Mature users should be happy.

- EX Ebony Tears (+) does 3 hits and allows for followup attacks

- EX Death Row (+repeatedly) can be input up to 5 times instead of up to 3 times, making it easy to hit confirm and great for chipping.

- EX Despair (+) has some invincibility on startup, making it a very important move for Mature who does't have many moves that let her counterattack quickly.

- EX Nocturnal Lights (+) has a different animation from the regular version (the background turns red, as mentioned before). Apparently they had problems getting the blue Ebony Tears effect to look good on the red background, .

- Mature's NeoMAX is called 'Awaking Blood', where she removes her eyepatch and her eye flashes, at which point a large tail-like energy wave smashes the opponent. The range is pretty long, making it good for combos as well as a standalone move at long range. Also, it hits overhead.

- It's hard to make out on the sprite, but apparently Mature's eyepatch conceals a snake-shaped birthmark.

VICE

- Vice is a power character with a focus on throw moves, much like earlier games, but unlike Daimon and Clark she has good striking attacks too, and has some good combos.

- After the location tests they gave her back her mid-air throw DM Overkill (+or in mid-air). It looks like it's difficult to combo, but you can in fact super cancel it after Mayhem (+/) -> Splash (+), right before the Splash hits.

- EX Decide (+) has 'everywhere priority' (wtf does なんでも判定 mean?) and lets Vice follow up with a close C after it connects, creating a combo opportunity.

- EX Negative Gain (+) has an effect where a skull appears on the screen (I guess like one of the energy pillars in Mature or Rugal's moves?)

- Her NeoMAX has the same name as Mature's (Awakening Blood). She removes her jacket slightly, and the birthmark on her back flashes, at which point a large energy wave shaped like a snake's tail knocks the opponent down at high speed. Because the snake appears from the edge of the screen behind Vice, it can be easily used as a counterattack when Vice is cornered.

- Mature's and Vice's 4th color makes their color schemes match Iori's.

Next week? The AOF team.
YAY, VICE RETURN DM GET! Has she ever had OverKill in anything but 2002 and Neowave? (I thought she had it in 98UM, but that's wrong, lol.)

This makes her the only grappler in the game with an AIR DM, eh? Fun, Fun.

I agree with everything but 2 of your choices.
Joe Higashi should be voiced by Vic Mignogna (A very, very underrated voice actor, plus Kyle is doing voice work for Street Fighter X Tekken, so he should at least take a breather.) and King should be voiced by Michelle Ruff (She has that mature voice that would king very well.)
Other than that, i like this casting.

I agree greatly, bad netcode will just tear down the fun for everyone.
