I don't see why everyone's insisting that it's a shoutout to Twilight. There have been plenty of stories about supernatural creatures participating in classroom activities, from "The Ghost Who Went to School" to "Teen Wolf."

the fact it is simply described as it is steers the possibilities to only a few options. Teen wolf didn't involve vampires(and was it a book before it was a movie? this is a book he is reading), the other one you mention is about a ghosT? I mean yes there is a few possibilities out there, but the detail that it is ploddingly plotted is notorious for Twilight (and most of Stephanie Meyers work) and the description that it is physically painful to read is a typical reaction of a male reading the books, since the series was more inclined to be read by teen girls. Both are obviously mere opinions of the series, but most authors I would think agree it is a slow moving story(which is neither good nor bad, just a style choice), and most teen guys would rather peel out their intestine then read those books. :) Even if guys like the stories, it's almost a social norm to "hate them" for no reason other then.. it's what you are supposed to do. Why? no clue... Likely for the same reason when I was a kid it was kooler to listen to Guns and Roses then Bon jovi, which was the "girls music". lol (ok yeah just dated myself here...)

I can't say whether this was put in as a fun nod to pop culture, or a way to show the MC in p4 wasn't as EMO as the MC in p3(who might have liked Twilight lol).

I have to hope that Atlus USA allows stuff like this knowing full well the interpretations and reactions of their work (at least in a general sense). So the fact this reference is pointedly steered at the more recent pop culture of Twilight seems intended, if possibly a little optimistic by whoever did it on the team (back when this was being worked on, Twilight wasn't yet a sensation).

From what I have read on the dev posts, the translators are allowed some wiggle room for how they change the original language to English, and I can easily see how a translator would change a obvious reference for Japanese culture into an "Americanized" equivalent.

Either way it's not really a big deal. It's slight. An aside. A off beat joke a lot of folk might not get. I love crap like that. Adds layers and dimensions to media and the more the merrier.

Well, Twilight is what every damn girl was whining about at the time (and they still are :() so it's only natural to assume it is. Also, the books are so bad they could be called a comedy. I just assumed the writers thought the same thing.

I don't think there is a book aside from Twilight that specifically involves a girl going to a new school in a new town with vampires in it.
