try going through the level slower. use a shield and try to attack one enemy at a time. for phalanx stock up on fire bombs, they can be purchased from the merchant. and circle him tossing one when you can. dont worry about your souls, you can collect lots of them later. also make sure you're using the thief ring and the cling ring. good luck.
also make sure you open the short cuts, makes getting around easier after you die. dont fight the red eye knight.

For my perspective:
There're three tiers to the combat: Melee being the hardest, with ranged and magic being easier.
For the early game, a shield is a life saver. Especially if you buy a heater shield off of the Blacksmith. (100% physical damage block, versus 80% IIRC on the starter.)
Keep your shield up until you're ready to strike. Even if you're mainly using magic, the game is entirely about timing. Enemies have recovery after their attacks, and so do you.
Spears and rapier/daggers can attack without lowering a shield, so they're good weapons for beginners. You won't be able to get a spear until past the first Blue Eye Knight though.
The Red Knight is pretty much instant death at low skill. There -are- two ways to defeat him early on though, spam magic at him or lead him into the shortcut tower and off of the staircase to fall to his death.
Later in the level, you'll find a rampart that the dragon breathes fire onto. This is the direction you -need- to go. So lure him in to kill the majority of the enemies, then blitz across while he flies off.
Phalanx itself isn't too hard. Heck the central blob can't even attack you, but he has 40~ small shield-blobs who can and will attack. Concentrate on them first. It helps to have a lot of fire bombs to toss on to it. But they have no magic defense, and so will still take 70-80% damage through their shields.
After having done it with a thief, going back with a Royal felt like cheating. Good luck though. The game gets both harder and easier after that point.

use a shield and dodge attacks, also the first boss requires alot of fire so save up on turpentine and fire bombs

hey andrew are you suggesting using fire on the giant knight after the bridge or were you refering to the blob demon? the blob was easy with my halbred, just swung and dodged. patience seems like the key to this game though.
can anyone give advice please?

No, I was talking specifically about the 1-1 haul. Red Eyes can be spammed to death with magic, but it takes some skill since he charges from just outside the lockon range.
Tower Knight is another stupidly easy with magic encounter. Arrows are about the same, if easier to aim.
First thing for that boss is eliminating all of the archers... After they're gone you can snipe him as he tosses the lance magic, if you hit him in the head, he'll topple easily.
The wiki that was linked is what I'm using... This game really rewards knowing, preparing, and skill in about equal portions.

I know this is old but i feel like i have to saw something
By the first stage, do you mean the Tutorial stage?? If so you WILL die most likely against Vanguard.
If your talking about the actual 1st stage, 1-1. Then you have to defend Always, keep replaying the tutorial till you learn how to effectivly parry slash attacks, only slash attacks? as far as i've tried, can be parried and then you can basically 1-hit kill them with the counter attack move.
Other then that. I suggest these things
1) The beggining, watch out for the pit trap.
2) Whenever your about to turn a corner, keep your shield up.
3) Do not fall off ledges, you will die most likely.
4) Always be aware of your surroundings :AKA: traps.
5) In 1-1, their is a knight who is who you do not want to face at the begining, he will be glowing red, unlike the armored knights who are blue.

Ha, I was so annoyed with 1-1, because I kept coming to this bridge and this knight with a spear at the other end kept running and one-hitting me every single time, and there was nothing I could do. I tried dodging, he just kept on me and hit me; I tried shield, and he just smacked it out of the way, and one-hit me; I tried running at him like a fool and he just one-hit me. ;)
Eventually I learned that you had to go the opposite direction than his, but I went through and died like 20-30 times before realizing I actually didn't have to go that way.

I started out with a mage character. My problem is not enough healing items. I loot bodies and STILL keep dying. And the healing items cost so much.
edit: :3 And yep. Trying the whole blocking thing...

I keep running into the problem of not getting enough grass drops.... and they cost a ton of souls if you are at the beginning! if I do manage to find my bloodstain... how exactly do I get my body back? I touch it and still have half heath... I've gotten my body back but I can't recall how. :very_sad: Any tips on getting moon grass easily? I'm trying killing the zombie dudes at the beginning and running back to the nexus a bunch of times without using grass... is this the right approach?

I have a feeling the problem is that you're in pure black world tendency due to the Valentine's event and the game has became a little harder than it should be. If this is the case, try making a character in offline mode first.
If not, one thing you should know is that healing items are there for when you mess up. If you play well as a mage, you shouldn't be taking any damage at all. Move slowly and with your shield up at all times until you have memorized all enemy locations. Only shoot at crossbowmen after you have sidestepped their attack on you. Spamming R3 is pretty useful too since it can show you the location of close enemies you didn't notice before. Use the guide to reach Ostrava so that you can pick up the thief's ring, it's very handy.
You only get your body back after you've defeated a boss or when you use a stone of ephemeral eyes. Touching your bloodstain just gets you your souls back.

Something I do on 1-1 is when you have a zombie guy coming towards you, hold your ground for a second and when it seems he is going to jump, move backwards so he misses then beat him up :)
Just make sure you are locked onto him before backing up. Not all zombies droip grass, but if you don't mind going through the same level half a dozen times to stock up, go for it. I do. I never buy recovery items unless I need lotuses for world 5.

If you have any Stone of Ephemeral eyes you can revive anywhere. If you don't have any then you are gona have to kill a boss demon!
you can also stay in spirit/soul form, equip the Cling ring(gives you a little more health when in soul form) and just play though 1-1 a few times to collect grass:p
If you have luck of 10 or more you can get a good amount of regular drops of grass!(I got grass to 99 a few hours playing as a Demon Hunter):D

Rushing will mess u up in this game
I see alot of people rushing. Tried to help someone today and messaged them to slow down. They said ok and did just that. Then in a part on 2-1 where there are quite a few enemies, they rush right in the middle of it so here I go, running in to save the guy b4 he dies, and got ambushed and killed while he did nothing to help me. He went the other way when I came to rescue him....lol. I was just glad I was the phantom because I had over 50,000 souls I didn't wanna lose....LOL

You can revive in 2 ways. Either you kill a level boss or you kill another player (forgot if that also counts for being invaded) however killing a boss gives you white tendency and killing a player while invading his world is black tendency.

Actually i found the game quite easy (a good challenge though!). The only level i had trouble with was 1-1, the first one. Didn't know how to play so even the lowest demons killed me with ease, but once you know how to dodge effectively, it's kinda a piece of cake. Farm souls if you can :-D!

it honestly isn't that hard
the learning curve is simple for combat and you start to understand a.i.'s moveset pretty fast
i got this game when the price dropped a few weeks ago and i got to like.. NG++++ then decided to platinum it and got platinum
my advice is to just mass strength and vitality and just backstab everything with upgraded dragon bone smasher
i also tried wanderer and magician after my initial barbarian char, and maybe it's because of my experience with barbarian's NG++++ but these chars seem a lot easier. practice stage Vanguard was cakewalk with both new chars and omg that fire magic is so powerful for early playthrough.

Considering the fact that this includes temple knight, ill ask...
I'm getting Demon's Souls and want to be a melee class, not necessarily pure melee tho.
Anyway, i'm obviously a real beginner (never played it before). Everyone says Royal is really good and i kinda want to have soul arrow but want to be melee and the royal is mostly mage TO START WITH, i want to start melee.
I've narrowed it down to either Soldier, Temple Knight or Royal. (Knight is also an option but he's apparently a bit advanced for me) which one should i play as, rmeebr that i want to be mostly melee and I WILL BE USING SWORDS AND SHIELDS, NOT HALBERDS ETC... which is unfortunatly what the TK starts off with, so which one should i be?

Learn the game's rules. Abide by the game's rules.
This is really about the best way to view it. Demons Souls doesn't play by normal game rules; it has its own set, driven by timing and cautious observance.
Remember to take your time as you progress and try not to face too many enemies at once. For a slightly easier start, consider playing as a Royal. They have the lowest starting soul level but they make up for it with some fantastic equipment.
By the way, you do realize you can recover all of the souls you lose when you die, right? Just get back to your body without dying a second time and you can collect them.

I would highly recommend the Temple Knight. Despite your distaste for the halberd, it's not difficult to get your hands on something else fairly early on to take its place. No worries there. They also start with the best non-magical armor the game has to offer.

Play more patiently. Don't ever rush a fight and always wait for the enemy to leave you an opening to attack. Don't be afraid to rely more on dodging that blocking in some situations.

A good tactic for taking down the dreglings in the first level is to lock on to them, let them jump past you, then backstab them, as for the knights, wait for them to attack, then attack them while they recover.

The best tactic for the first level is to play a royal, and use soul arrow...
Seriously though, The temple night is probably my favorite character. I've played through at least once with most of the classes now, and the pole weapons are probably my favorite in the game. Busting ass and getting a +5 dragon mirdan hammer or halberd will guarantee 2-3 hit kills with a standard attack on almost anything in the game except for bosses. I like how different the weapon handles depending on whether it's being held one or two handed. It's good in the open, good in a tight corridor if you put away your shield. They're a bit tuff starting out, and the weapon takes getting used to, but if you keeping throwing points into endurance, you will soon be able to carry more weapons and stuff.

Have a shield ready, especially around unfamiliar corners, but it's still better to dodge or back away from an attack.

Easiest way to start this game and be a beast for a good part of it. Follow below:
Easiest character class to begin this build with is the thief because of his/her dagger and it's powered back-stabs. Upon starting a new game, and looting all of the npcs you kill, keep all of the firebombs you collect and/or buy firebombs from the merchant in 1-1. Kill everything and equip the cling ring from the bottom of the stairs with the lever. Once you have at-least 10 firebombs, have killed "Ostrava of Boletaria", looted the mausoleum key from him, and have picked up the thief's ring you may proceed to the red eye knight in 1-1. Equip the thief's ring and use the firebombs on and run away appropriately from the red eye knight as it can kill you relatively easily. Now open the door to the mausoleum and lure Old King Doran out the best way possible. DO NOT! attempt to fight him toe-to-toe as one quick swipe of his blade is more than enough to kill you. No, instead just lure him out enough and run so he cant get to you. Upon him walking back into the mausoleum quickly backstab him and quickly run away. (Repeat the lure process until he's dead) Upon completion, you have 27,000 souls, old king doran's armor, eternal warriors ring, and demonbrandt before you've even fought the first demon.
It will take forever to kill Doran but he will fall if you are careful.
You can also do the lure trick on the red eye knight so he falls to his death in the stairwell that leads to beginning of stage. More info? Gamefaqs should have details.
