ATLUS REVEALS DEMON PASSWORD SYSTEM FOR UPCOMING NINTENDO DS™ SCI-FI RPG SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI®: STRANGE JOURNEY™

Open, sesame...

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- DECEMBER 2, 2009 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today revealed that its upcoming sci-fi RPG for Nintendo DS™, Shin Megami Tensei®: Strange Journey™, will feature a potent demon password system, allowing players to generate and exchange codes representing their customized demons, and introducing an all-new facet to the franchise's beloved "collect every demon" gameplay.

Due to the game's in-depth demon management system, which includes the ability to level, specialize, and uniquely fuse demons for use in battle, players can eventually craft a distinct party of rare demons on their mission to save Earth. With the demon password system, all of those important levelling and customization decisions can be provided to fellow Strange Journey players through easily exchanged passwords. Need a powerful chaos-aligned demon with fire attacks? A friend with just such a member in their party could generate a unique password that, when entered into the demon compendium, will unlock said demon for the player.

Moreover, Atlus will release a very limited number of passwords for use in the demon compendium which will unlock rare, otherwise inaccessible demons, adding yet another layer of deep customization and endlessly addictive demon collection. Fans are encouraged to be on the look out for these finite codes, as they may not necessarily all come at the same time or even from the same source.

"We've been using passwords to unlock demons at Atlus for ages," disclosed Aram Jabbari, Manager of PR and Sales at Atlus. "We've grown exceedingly cautious in recent years, though. There was this one time when we wanted a tester demon, but because we screwed up one tiny part of the password, we ended up with a big slime that ate half of our QA team, significantly delaying the release of a game."

More details about the demon passwords will be released closer to the game's Spring 2010 launch.

About SMT: Strange Journey

When the black spot appeared in the Antarctic, mankind became nervous; when it began to spread, that anxiety turned to panic. The Joint Project, convened to discuss how to deal with the expanding anomaly, decided to send in four ships carrying humanity's finest soldiers and most cutting-edge technology. The mission: to investigate what lay on the other side of what had been dubbed the Schwarzwelt and find out if there was a way to stop it from eventually covering the Earth.

You are an elite soldier hand-picked for the Strike Team, outfitted with a Demonica environment suit and posted to the Red Sprite under Commander Gore. Upon entering the Schwarzwelt, the crew finds itself forced to deal with harsh conditions, supernatural interference, and throngs of demons populating the bewildering world. What exactly is the Schwarzwelt? What awaits at the end of this strange journey? It is entirely in your hands to find out...

Key Features
•Shin Megami Tensei goes beyond -- Strange Journey's game mechanics represent a return to the proud tradition of the all-time dungeon-crawling classic SMT: Nocturne, while its story takes players into the near future on a mission to save Earth and to understand humanity's position within the larger universe.

•A dark turn into science fiction -- Who or what is causing the black hole that is engulfing the Earth? A mission to investigate the cause uncovers a whole world of demons that humans knew nothing about. Do they seek your destruction or will you seek theirs? Will you decide to save Earth or choose another path for humanity?

•Team up with demons -- Demons may be friends or foes depending on your ability to negotiate, bribe, and coerce them to join your party. With more than 300 types of demons, you'll have a huge variety of battlefield encounters and an equally large base of options on which to build your party strategy.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey has been rated "M" for Mature with Blood, Fantasy Violence, Language, Partial Nudity, and Sexual Themes by the ESRB.

Will the password for the QA team devouring slime demon be one of them? :)

I'm interested in this. And like Enzeru, I must collect them all.

lol, forums

There will be no collecting of them all. There's a potential password for each demon at every possible level with every possible skill set and stat allocation. Which is to say, there's something like an infinite amount of them.

Don't listen to him. He just worked on the game; what does he know?

I'd advise that you get the code of every single demon you own every time it raises a point in anything. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to start an SMT-themed stationary company for all your code-scribing needs.

This password idea is pure gold. I love it, but how does it really work? Do they store these passwords on the memory card because I could be saving a lot of demons maybe even multiple copies.

You probably just hit a button to get the code for your current demon. If you want a code for an older version of that demon then you have to write it down and keep it yourself. I'm only guessing so I could be wrong. Really looking forward to this game

I imagine an old file cabinet fild with folders and folders with demon names on the folder tabs. For some reason the code system reminds me of the codes you used to get when you died playing Kid Icarus.

I am curious about one thing... What do they mean by finite number of codes for certain demons? Do you mean that a code may go out to unlock demon ABC and it will one be good for the first 50 people that unlock it? Or do you mean that the code will only be valid for a limited period of time? Or do you mean that there will be a limited number of these special codes that will be released as in you will only give out say ten special codes for the game? And "Yes" is not a valid response :p

I'd prefer wi-fi demon trading myself, but I guess the password system is cool, too.

Also I will be hunting down these passwords that Atlus are releasing. >:D

Not a stupid question, but the answer is no. The two releases use different character sets to generate their passwords.

I was hoping they would ad ad-hoc or maybe wi-fi connection capability, but I'm pretty pleased by what we get.

Entering a password only registers that demon in one of three password slots in your compendium. You still have to pay Macca to summon it like any other demon, and at the start of the game, there's no way you can afford that. Plus, you still can't buy demons whose level is higher than yours, like in most SMT games.

I was hoping they would ad ad-hoc or maybe wi-fi connection capability, but I'm pretty pleased by what we get.

Both of those are more limited, in a way, than a password system. With Wi-Fi you can only trade with people you know (and you'd still have to enter their friend codes) and with local wireless you could only trade with people around you. This way, if you see a password anywhere on the net, you can enter it and register that demon.

So by this statement do you mean that there will be only so many special codes released by Atlus or that by limited that the codes themselves have some form of restriction to make them limited?

I read that the game has a small number of demons that are only attainable through special passwords. You shouldn't have to worry about your codes expiring or anything! :)

Ahh thanks very much. I hate feeling rushed as I prefer to take things at my own pace rather than have to feel rushed to do something. Thanks for the response :D

Maybe it's language, maybe some of the demon designs are risque, maybe the story has some iffy elements. I hope it's all of the above. ;)

Besides, who cares? If the concept blows the brains out of some people who can't seem to comprehend the idea of Nintendo having Mature games, all the better. Both of those are more limited, in a way, than a password system. Thanks for clearing that up.

It's weird because there are, including this game, about 11 games rated M for the DS yet in general over 50% of games are rated M. :/

I heard some of the passwords were the names of some the developers like "Kaneko" , I always wondered what you'll get if you put in "Okada".

Maybe we'll be getting new passwords aside from the Japanese originals.

Ah, how very intriguing this is. I always love online interactions in games that you rarely see. This should make it quite interesting for all of us who love to acquire really powerful demons in any SMT games.

So does Golden Sun, but it's a simple process to convert them (http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/561356/19468).

I wonder what the password in the picture under the "password" section of the main site results in.

This might be a little late, but the staff passwords don't include "Okada" , since he had nothing to do with this game. He doesn't work at Atlus anymore.
