Tokyo Mono Hara Shi for the PSP... double awesome!!! The Japanese people are getting all sorts of hot looking RPGs. On the EU/US front, Persona PSP stands all alone. Anyway, ATLUS U.S.A. would do well to localise this and all of the other great PSP games that are part of their catalogue.

This comment isn't meant to stir up any controversy, but don't some of you want to see adult protagonists? I realize for some of you it is an age thing and it is easier to identify with characters that are close to your age, but personally I am tiring of the high school thing.
Although do I also realize that young protagonists are pretty much the norm in jrpgs, it would just be nice to see adults a little more often.
Again, I am not trying to discredit this game or rip on those of you that are into it. I'm just curious.

Agree, high school is too over used of a setting in many games. While I understand that the audience that plays games may relate more easily to high school (we've all gone there), it's about as stale as an amnesiac protagonist, or a certain kidnapped princess.
I love games like Lost Odyssey, where the protagonists are not that standard high school age. It can give the characters a lot more depth because they have lived longer and have a more defined personality.

I'd love to see more rpgs with protagonists who are out of middle and high school. A Persona game could work just as well with an adult character that goes to work on weekdays (edit= not to say I want only Persona 3/4 style games). Older characters and modern/scifi settings are what I love to see, especially if they can be done together. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem older characters in rpgs are popular at all, even as the average age of people who play games rises.
Don't worry, it's just that I enjoy being mean. I know it was a honest mistake. BTW if this gets localized despite having vertical text boxes, I want Sigma Harmonics in english.

An adventure rpg sounds good to me, but I don't know if it would come over here because it sounds like it's mostly text-based and most-likely saturated with Japanese culture/humor... but then again Atlus has done a good job with the Shin Megami Tensei games so, who knows? I hope for the best!!! ;)

Honestly the "high school" protaganist is old and poorly done to begin with. Lets be real here, look at Akihiko Sanada from P3 for example. Do you really think I high schooler handles it that well when his best friend gets shot to death while he looks on unable to do anything? Or Mitsuru, I mean I knew at least three high schoolers who helped run multi million dollar companies didn't you?
It is the saved by the bell complex we have character that look and feel mid twenties but I am supposed to believe they are 17. Meanwhile in Mass Effect I made my Shepard look like a grizzled war veteran with a five o' clock shadow and would not have placed him a day under 35-36.

This is starting down the path of typical WRPG vs JRPG. JRPG's tend to mostly contain teenage boys as their protagonists, probably because i don't see many cool older japanese men!!! WRPG's though tend to have older protagonists because westerners (like myself) tend to see ourselves as badasses. (sarcasm obviously bros)

More like an adventure game with turn based RPG elements. xD
But anyway, as Zachalmighty said, Western RPGs almost always have adult/middle aged characters (Mass Effect, Fable [for the majority of the game], Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls), while Japanese RPGs (shouldn't it be Eastern? xp) more than likely have teenage protagonists (almost every SMT game, PSU, Kingdom Hearts).

P3 isn't. And P3P is a port of it, therefore P3P isn't. P3P is turn based RPG with visual novel elements. It's like saying changing something trivial in a game would change its genre completely, that's ridiculous.

It might have to do with the amount of dejected Teenagers in the East. Where as in the West we tend to stereo type dejected teenagers as a certain race or ethnicity. Or maybe we in the West just place a larger importance on someone middle aged. Japan might have more of a children are the future attitude than we in the west do.

I know what you mean. The average gamer is like mid twenties and so many RPGs have protagonists that are 13-16. I would prefer games with an older protagonist and a real story line. The last RPG I enjoyed was Lost Odyssey but I still had a few problems with it.

This. I'll play any game with a good story or good gameplay (or preferably both), but I really am getting tired of playing as teenagers. But let's face it, a modern-day RPG about older people with jobs would probably not sell as well.

Day one if the battle system is decent. And, of course, if it's even localized.
With the "no moar high school" thing, I prefer the high school setting. ...Maybe because I'm in high school. But, at the same time, a lot of anime centers around teens. Since JRPGs are a form of anime and tend to follow the same structure...
Yeah.
I'm not sick of the high school setting yet, though a good balance between teens and adults could be nice.

I think the high school setting can be done as the long as the characters are at least some what realistic. Despite sort-of liking P3, I hated the characters. The only major character that came off as slightly realistic to me was Yukari. The characters in P4 now, are a lot better.
The game however looks ok. The music in that video was.....apalling, however I've always had an affinity towards games with card based combat.

Well, can't really say much about the game yet, need to see more actual gameplay footage. Seems like a card themed game, which I sometimes enjoy.
The problem such games face, though, is theming them around cards is a great way to get tagged with the Yu-Gi-Oh brush and dismissed quickly. Even in games like Baten Kaitos or Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories where the card theme wasn't modeled after TGCs at all. Both played out in a really cool, unique way but no one wants to give them a chance because there are cards and don't care how they're different.
I'd totally give this game a shot, though, because I have a feeling this is going to be another very different take on the card theme.
That aside, I would prefer to see more adult characters in RPGs, Japan needs to somewhat realize that the disconnect with RPG gamers in the west is starting to become the fact that we're not all teenagers anymore.
To thier credit the teenagers in SMT games and thier spin-offs do have a strong dose of maturity for thier age, and that's good, but I also like seeing a focus on adults rather than there just being a token adult character.
SMT: Strange Journey looks to be satisifying that angle for me for the moment, I just wish there was more of it. I also felt the characters of Digital Devil Saga were more in thier 20s, which Raidou Kuzunoha is very much thrust into the adult world all the time, which makes me wonder why he's aged down to a high school kid at all. Next time, its probably best to age him up a little bit.

The main reason why teenagers appear more often is because JRPGs generally focus more on the plot and character development. And one who is in his/her teens holds much more potential and it. Definitely, it's harder to deal with deaths than you're an adult. In any case, it's not like all jrpgs are about teenagers and all wrpgs are about older adults, nor does it automatically makes a game good or bad, so I don't see what's the big deal.

Wow, that is an awesome point that I never even considered. You're absolutely right. From a writing perspective, it's much easier to make a dynamic, interesting character who's still young and vulnerable to change.
I think part of the issue is not so much that the characters are teenagers, but that if you want a game in a modern setting, they're in high school. I find that I don't mind characters being teenagers anywhere near as much in other settings. Just for example, Lunar or Star Ocean (any of them.)
Here's another thought: Why just limit characters to teenagers or adults? The Mother series is fantastic with characters who are children.

You might know it as "Earthbound." Which has a battle that is a (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChDcLF1kq0Y) lot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9yo_Cz8Ito&feature=related) creepier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_-mctFgTEU&feature=related) than six-boobed satan or anything else I've seen so far in an Atlus game. (Each word is a seperate link. Some minor spoilers, and purists might not want to watch if they want to be surprised by the last battle.) Be sure to check out the first video around 7:00. I mean, just the concept of a being so evil and powerful that it can no longer think rationally and isn't aware of anything...
If that wasn't creepy enough, legend has it that the dialogue later in the fight was inspired by a violent rape scene the designer saw when he accidentally wandered into a pornographic theater as a small child.

According to siliconera, Tokyo Mono Hara Shi: The Mysterious Story of Karasu no Mori Academy comes out in Japan on April 22nd '10 as a PSP exclusive game. The title is an adventure game with RPG elements. NISA have gone out of their way to publish a quirky adventure game (see Disgaea Infinite for the PSP) so why shouldn't ATLUS USA do the same? Here hoping that this title gets localised sooner than later.

That does look impressive. I think chances are good that they will bring it over, but I'll put my vote in anyway just to be sure ;)

That was strange. The enemies look so far away, then it constantly changes perspectives as you strike each individual enemy? At one point it looked like the view was crooked.
Looks interesting, though. I can't wait to find out more about the battle system.

Yeah, I didn't understand a single thing about that battle. Hopefully, that's a GOOD thing.:D

I watched it again. Still confusing, but it looks like it combines some strategy/RPG elements, but in a first person perspective, which is really cool. There's a grid on the side with what looks like the amount of space you can move around on the battle field. I didn't see the player move any spaces, though. It also looks like you use cards?
Anyways, the enemy tried to move forward a space, the player countered by using a card it looked like, and the enemy got pushed back from the space.

It looked like it played out like the Wizardry PC games!!
I can get behind this game being localized.

Never been a fan of first person in this kind of games..
It's a shame, I could probably enjoy this game if it wasn't for that.

It looks nice but I don't like the battle it reminds me of Dragon Quest the old style kind (Sorry DQ fans) so there rushing this game to beat NISA? good luck to them.

I'm playing the remade persona, and I think that I'd like this. So I'd support this if it came over. Can I say please? A lot?

I am so going to grab this game the moment it comes out in the U.S., actually, if my patience starts running short, I might even pre-order it. *Sigh* I can hardly contain my excitement any longer.

Is it like Tokyo Majin Gakuen meet Shin Megami Tensei: Persona? The same creator of Kowloon Youma Gakuen Ki was Shout!Designworks Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Majin Gakuen) and Atlus (Shin Megami Tensei: Persona)?

Exactly yes. It is spin-off to Tokyo Majin Gakuen. Because it the maker of Kowloon Youma Gakuen Ki. Just look at Atlus Japan website.

If you look familiar to Tokyo Mono Hara Shi. Then it must be same creator, 今井秋芳 (Shuhou Imai) the creator of Tokyo Majin Gakuen who also working for Shout!Designworks Co., Ltd.

well I know they are making Persona 5, which will proally be high school again. I agree with a earlier post to make a Persona game with college kids or older and make it more mature. I love the Persona games but more mature humor/dating sim/etc would be cool

The battle system reminds me a little of Enchanted Arms with the panels in battle...thing. I admit First POV is actually not something I'm fond of. Didn't like it in the first Persona game, nor Strange Journey, but if the game's interesting enough, I can try to get over that hurdle. I do like the atmosphere so far. Kind of like Okami xD

Played the game... It's mostly an open air battle system. There is no change screen for a battle, you can move freely in the battle ground and attack either with a sword or a gun, it's basically a first person tactical RPG, you can attack as many times you want until your AP runs out.
That's basically the battle system.
There is also a social system as you may already know. There is the typical choose your answer, for example ''Save her'' ''Don't save her''. Aside from that, there are times where you have to answer questions with a mood, four to be exact: the right pannel is for a positive answer, the left pannel is for a negative answer, the pannel below is either for a serious answer or a sad answer, and the above pannel is the same as before, either sad or serious.
That's all I could get by now... and a High School embiorment :P
And I think they can easily change the vertical text into horizontal... I don't think is that hard...
It has been a year since then... so there is not going to be a localization, but who knows... I'm keeping my hopes up.:)
