Game copiers that are used to copy video game software without authorization onto any type of memory device or the hard drive of a personal computer are illegal. They enable the user to make, play and distribute illegal copies of video game software which violates Nintendo's copyrights and trademarks. These devices also allow for the uploading and downloading of ROMs to and from the Internet. Based upon the functions of these devices, they are illegal.
The internet allows the illegal downloading of copyrighted games and computers allow the playing of these games. Based on the functions of the internet and computers, they are illegal.

Correct me if i'm wrong but, Game copiers sound like they only do one thing.... Copy games.
Hard drives, computers, the internet, etc... Are used for many, many more things and are readily available, unlike Game copiers.

They seem to be reffering to R4s and the like, which have multiple purposes, which can be considered "Game Copiers" as much as computers can be considered "Game Consoles".

Yeah, flash carts have far more uses than just playing backups. I use my CycloDS to get on IRC when I have gone on trips if I needed to contact anyone, as I do not have a laptop.

Odd story. I was eating this weekend, and a group of middle aged housewives behind me is having a conversation. I hear the word DS being tossed about, so I listen in a bit, and it turns out they're talking about how these R4 things have made life so much easier for their kids. They never lose games anymore, and now they can try every game that comes out before they know if they want to buy them...

Ahahaha, wow. Even the piracy on Nintendo consoles appeals to middle-aged housewives :p
I don't use R4 myself, but I've got the homebrew channel on my Wii, which makes updating it a real pain in the arse. What's even more annoying is that I do buy stuff on the Shop Channel and I do buy the import games I need homebrew for to run them on my Wii. But then I have to use more homebrew to update my Wii safly to use the Shop Channel.
In other words, I have to use homebrew to give Nintendo my money.

At work the other day I was showing a customer our DSis and PSPs and helping her figure out which would suit her childs' needs best and whether or not a "bundle" would be the most bang for her buck when her husband trots up (and these folks are somewhere around the forties) and announces to her that a PSP will "prolly be better cuz I can burn movies for it." I had never considered this possible due to the construction of a UMD, and replied that I had never heard of such, and then asked if he was sure he could make a U-M-D. He was like "yeah my alienware can do that."
...seriously?
And if so, WTH are middle age parents doin throwin' around technology I don't even know exists...
Life has gotten strange.

I'm not sure if this is what you're thinking of, but there are third party UMD outer cases now. I rented a PSP game off of Gamefly, and it came in an entirely different case. All some manufacturer would have to do is make the proper size optical disc to fit inside, and voila (no, not viola) homemade UMD.
