View Full Version : Uchigatana or Kilji?

Well, I have both the uchi and kilij up to moon+5 but I can't decide which to stick with as my main weapon. So the point of this thread is to state which of the two you prefer and why.
From my POV, here are up's and downs:
Uchigatana:
+ stronger
+ better running attack
+ has stab attacks
+ more widespread attacks
+ longer blade
- slower
- hard to use in narrow corridors (but I have moon winged spear +5 to cancel that out)
- R2 attack takes forever, though it is very powerful
- half the durability of the Kilji (but I'm careful with it and I repair every chance I got, also I carry grindstones)
Kilij:
+ much faster standard and R2 attacks
+ good in narrow corridors (again, I have my spear for this job though)
+ twice the durability
- not very good against multiple enemies compared to the uchi
- not much weaker, but still significantly weaker
- shorter blade
And more, but I want to hear your opinions.

Scrap the Moon Winged Spear +5 and use them both.

The spear is useful though, plus I need its stab attacks for certain things.
Just tell me which of the uchi or kilij is better -.-

The swing speed difference between the Uchi and the Kilji isn't enough to make up for the damage difference, and any place where the Uchi is a bad choice you'd be better off with a estoc or winged spear anyway.
Edit: and the durability isn't an issue as long as you repair often and have a grindstone for emergencies.

In that case, I agree with LemonFrosted.

Think of the uchigatana as a longsword that benefits from dexterity instead of strength and gives you a bleed bonus (superior to the kilij). Slightly off-topic: Historically, both the longsword and the uchigatana were designed for ground combat. Purely slashing swords are more appropriate for cavalry.

Since I don't want to waste your time I will just state that I prefer the Kilij. Better damage reduction during blocking, good attack power and speed and I really appreciate the reversal move when using it off-hand.

... the reversal move when using it off-hand.
Is that using the parry button?
I haven't tried dual wielding yet, should I be aware of anything or have certain stats before trying?

Not really, dual wielding is harder and requires better timing but any stats that benefit the weapons you use benefit the weapon being used in your offhand as well.
Most offhand weapons get a quicker/easier to use attack thats more meant as a "Combo Finisher"
Katanas actually make great offhand weapons, and the Parrying Dagger also works real well for parrying.

What the heck does that reversal move do?

Here are the stats at sharp +5 (my character has Dex 40 and Str 40):
sharp uchigatana +5: 143 + 175 = 318
sharp kilij +5: 135 + 165 = 300
The damage difference is minor. If you want a faster purely slashing sword that drains your stamina slower, I'd go with the kilij.

well, it LOOKS cool. i've never seen it actually do anything, except flow nicely into an actual attack. I always thought it was just a fancy thing to do to impress people.

Who does the sharp upgrade, I can't see it on either blacksmith :(

You probably need to initially get it to basic +3... Not sure I don't use these weapons, but it seems most need to be at +3 before any special upgrading can be done. Example: Knightsword +3 was req'd to upgrade to Crushing Knightsword +1. And it would probably be at Ed.

Sharp upgrades start at +0 and apply only to certain weapons. Try the blacksmith near the beginning of 2-1.

I love my moon winged spear +5. :frown:
I've never played a game where spears have been so effective for fighting. It's great. :)

The reversal move is what the name implies: Counter-attacking. Its basically the same thing as a shield's reprise, only with a sword. Curved ones are the only type that sports this feature and it can be pretty deadly if you are good with your timing.
Hope this answers your question, sorry for taking so long.

Thanks for this.
I had tested this last night and found that I had to take my kilij +3 back to no upgrades then the sharp upgrade appeared at Ed
