I tried to reach the treasure behind the altar after defeating Fool's Idol (3-1) but each time I get close, three gargoyle take me to 3-2.

Is there a way to sneak by and get it or is it just my imagination and there's no treasure?

When near the altar, hug one of the walls and make your way to the item. The garoyles will take you to the next stage when you are in the middle of the altar.

Another way that works, involves you hugging the right wall, and making the camera face that wall whilst you walk to where the treasure is, facing the camera. Give that a try. It's pretty neat.
