Does anyone use crossbows? Can you upgrade them?
What about the Mace? Does anyone use it? I have a Blessed Mace+3. Should I keep upgrading it?

If you like weapons with poor damage, limited range and slow reload times that you can't upgrade, then crossbow is the choice for you.
Maces are great for the Skeletons in 4 who are weak to Blunt, but I'm not sure how they compare elsewhere - My initial thought would be that you could go with a sword/mace combo and use each as needed. You will get more damage from a lot of the swords out there.

You forgot to say the you can't use the precision shooting mode. You're stuck with the target locking which is not great for attacking moving creature like the flying dragon 1-2 and the flying ray in 4-1. They are also heavier, 2.5-5 compared to 0,6-2 of the bow.

HA! Thanks for pointing out another crappy aspect of the crossbows - I also have a poor mental image of them seeing the crossbow wielding soldiers in 1 are so easy to take out. Shield up for first shot, go make a cocktail while he reloads, shield up to block another shot, go make a sandwich, shield up, block, get bored and one hit him.......

While, like said above, they're pretty bad in all those aspects they do have some handy uses. I upgraded one as a lark (and had extra stones on a character I was going to delete) - and it can turn out quite well, including killing the red eyes knight.
Here's how: Equip high level shield, equip crossbow. Equip light stuff. I would goad the knight into chasing me, then just shoot. It has a faster shoot animation than the bow, and hits hard enough the knights charge was disabled. Then I backed up. Then I repeated.
Was it effective? Not really, I could have killed him other ways quicker. But it was funny, and fun. It was also hilarious on the dredglings. Jump! Dodge, assassination looking bolt to the back of the head.

Crossbows wouldn't be so bad if they had a precision shooting mode when held 2 handed. But because they lack this they are basically completely useless in the hands of PCs...it's amazing that NPCs can use precision with them.

I must say that I used a crossbow once ... in 3-1 for killing the Foul Idol. Found a heavy crossbow on a corpse and bought some bolt to the singing merchand. It was the easiest boss of the game. Shoot, wait about an hour for reloading then hide behind pillar. It was the longest fight I've made but I didn't die ... so they can be use if you have no other option.

You wouldn't die meleeing the fools idol without dodging using only a dagger...shes one of the weakest bosses in the game

I think crossbows would be neat if you weren't forced into reloading it right after you fire it.
If you could just click and do a quick shot, then reload later after the fight, I'd love this weapon. That's how I think crossbows are supposed to be used.
Also, about the mace... I've been fighting against other players a lot the last couple days. My main weapon setup is a big shield and spear, I love those two - but I've always been undecided about what my 2nd weapon should be.
So I've tried out a lot of other weapons there, and I've recently fallen in love with the humble blessed mace. It seems to compliment the spear perfectly. The spear is great for people who are going berserk against me, and for people who dodge a lot - the mace is great for people who are hiding behind a shield, wreaking their stamina bar with quick one-handed strikes. Going two-handed with the mace is awesome for finishing people off because once you get a single hit in, they're stunned and you can just keep swinging away until your stamina bar runs out.

I always wondered about pvp performance of maces--I always use them against the silver and gold skeletons (either blessed or dragon mace)...BTW, my highest stat so far is End, probably for a good reason. :)

Mr. Vandal..... Running around to EACH thread complaining about how you can't start your own isn't going to help your case either. Until you let your thread count catch up with your rampant posting, why don't you find a thread that's at least conferable to your problem instead of complaining in every subsequent one?
That makes official warning #2. One more and you're done here.

I actually started to upgrade a mace to +4 crushing, but it's damage was not too good. I recently faced against a BP invader using a spiked mace and tho I killed him, I'm starting to like maces again. Personally I prefer to use a long sword + bow right hand, shield and catalyst OH, but I keep some weapons for situational use like Meat Cleaver and soon I'll have an upgraded spiked mace. I found with that +4 crushing mace that it is indeed quite effective against shielded opponents, but with the lowish dmg it's sorta bleh. Basically maces are very good in very specific situations.

I used the Light Crossbow in 1-1 and 1-2 because it was there and bolts kept dropping. It fires faster than bows and you can run around with a shield, but the long reload, short range, lack of precision mode or ability to upgrade, and heavier weight made me drop it off with Stockpile Thomas indefinitely.
You can hit and kill the Red Dragon with a crossbow, but I would highly recommend you do not try. I knocked off half its health with my bolts before I switched to arrows to finish it off.

lol I died on the fool's idol. I stepped on a paralyzing glyph and then got pew pewed by 2 or 3 of them.

Yep while it's a super duper easy fight... that's only the case after at least 1 attempt haha. It's one of those things that if you do mess up it can be devestating. In NG+ I died once for the same reason, a stun glyph. Still, went back and beat her down, then later helped someone out as a bluP.

I was hoping that equipping a crossbow in each hand might let you fire off two quick shots, but it turns out there's zero benefit. No way of escaping that reloading animation at all.
They're definitely a big missed opportunity in this game. Small, fast, light crossbows could've been great for thief characters, while high strength/endurance builds could've used hard-hitting siege crossbows or something.

Maybe they shoulda looked at the repeating crossbow and used that instead.
Even if all they used was the "ammo magazine" that repeating crossbows had it still would have made the crossbow a much more viable weapon.

I wish at least one crossbow had a higher starting damage stat and scaled a little bit (say "B" stat with dexterity, i.e., in real life, you still need some dexterity to properly aim the thing). The gargoyle crossbow has a "B" magic bonus, but has a crappy starting damage stat.
