View Full Version : Need some advice for a new character build

I'm taking a break from my level 120 royal to try out a new character, this time opting for melee combat. I chose a temple knight class and I plan to make him into a sort of tank character, with high vitality, endurance, and strength, and the ability to cast some miracle buffs (like anti magic and god's wrath).
I plan to limit how many points I put into dexterity to just meet some of the more advanced weapon requirements. If I am going to be using mainly axes/pole weapons/big swords, where do you suggest I stop leveling dexterity?
What weapon branches do you suggest? I know crushing is a no-brainer, but I would also like to be fairly decent with a bow, to facilitate gecko-hunting. Which bow upgrade path would be best for a strength user?
Where should I stop leveling my faith if I only plan to use it for buffs and the occasional god's wrath? How much intelligence should I have? I want to focus primarily on a few skills and avoid getting too over-balanced like I did with my first melee character.
Thanks for the help!

The best bow (if not the best weapon) in the game is the sticky composite long bow +5 which has an S rating in Dex bonus. At Dex ~30, it does >300 damage per heavy arrow shot (not even in hyper mode!). It killed False King Allant dead. Spiderstones (S Dex bonus for your bow), bladestones (S Dex bonus) and greystones (S Str bonus) are your priority. Everything else is junk (EDIT: well other than the hardstones to upgrade your purple flame shield +10). Geckos are weak to piercing attacks, so sometimes I just chase them with a spear. You should have enough intelligence and faith to be able to use warding, second chance, anti-magic and god's wrath (for the gecko cave), eventually. So when you're about to acquire those, just level up the necessary stat. EDIT: Also, get Garl Vinland's shield: it makes 4-2 a breeze.

I've got a sticky +5 on my royal character, but for my new character I'm planning on keeping my dexterity to a minimum and focusing on strength, so spiderstones and sharpstones won't be that important. Would I be best to stay with a plain old compound longbow +10 if I'm going to be a strength user?

I just checked the strategy guide: the bonus in Str is C for compound longbow +10. All the best bows have at most C Str bonus.

lol that's exactly my new character.

dammit man I was here first... get off of my lawn!
srsly though: stop at 12 dex for Compound Long Bow. There are going to be a lot of weapons you can't use, but they're all weapons you shouldn't be using in the first place.

Compound Long Bow +10 is your most optimal choice for bow.
High base damage + C-rank strength adds.

I'd aim for 3 miracle and 4 spell slots. It's enough to fit the biggest Miracle + 1 more, and the biggest Spell + 1 more.

Temple Knight
Start using the pole axe with two hands.
Clear 1.1 Strg to 18 and pole axe to +3 rest in faith stat
Clear 1.2 to get the bow and kill dragon more in faith stat
Save all turpentine for 5.1
Now 5.1 with 200 arrows
Kill large 5.1 goblin with arrows
Kill 5.1 boss with turpentine weapon
Faith to 24
Now 5.2 with thiefs ring
bypass all mobs with thiefs ring
When you get to the two big goblins and the shaman, use thief ring to kill shaman at a distance and bypass on the swamp side both goblins. (you can kill them with arrows if you want.
Go up the ramp to the slug nest and arrow shoot slug nest down
Grab sword of moonlight. Ignores shields rocks. Kill 1.2 boss.
Up faith stat and start world 2 untill you complete for God's Wrath. I suggest getting stg to 22 for puple flame shield and ungrad to +5 for flame lurker.
May want to work on dex to 16 and get the flame bow.
Meat cleaver
or on blessed weapons to get a total of 28hp/sec with ring.
