Anyone have any idea whats the exact formula on defense work with damage?

From my pvp experience, I felt is like:

Total Damage (after Multiplier) - Defense = Damage Taken

Is it as simple as that?

Probably, I was playing with a friend earlier who was wearing mostly Ancient King so he could roll good.

Me being stubborn and unconcerned with rolling and moving fast I keep to brushwood/dark silver combined (don't like brushwood body...is ugly)

The miners in 2-2 almost 1 shotted him all over the place, but hardly phased me. This is in NG+ as well. Course I have no idea what his Vit is, and I was in physical form. I also don't know if he was wearing cling ring. But they didn't break 25% on me with picks or hammers and everytime they hit him I thought they killed him.

Each time you gain a SL your total defense - armor aside - goes up. At the max char lvl you can have a defense of 200, which is as far as it gets anyway, and no need to wear any armor to soak the physical damage. When you get attacked a specific set of rules comes into play: What kind of attack hit you - you might be wearing something that blocks piercing or flame attacks for example, the attacker's stats, the weapon used etc. In each specific case the kind of damage is lowered by the amount of defense against THAT specific damage type. And there you have it.

That explains why characters who aren't specced to hit hard do such ridiculously low damage against guys in heavy armor. Slashing resistance especially gets ridiculous.

Max defense of 200? How come my defense shows 225ish? (granted thats with armor but what you said makes it sound like 200 is the absolute max)

I don't know if there is an absolute max or not but I do know that he is correct about armor from stats. Honestly as you go through more and more levels mobs hit so much harder armor eventually is unimportant. I am in NG+++ with 30 vit wearing half the gloom set and a BP can one shot kill me even if I have warding up if they land one clean hit. Yes it gets that bad.

This is one thing that figuring out the exact math for just doesn't matter because long term armor is probably the least useful stat in the game.

So let say you get hit

(200 physical (normal)+100 magic) - your defense is 200 = 100 damage taken?

Btw does magic from weapon ignore defense or it's reduce based on your mdef?

I understand the factors involved, but is the damage calculated that way? I used to play a game thats based on percentage, so just wondering.

Magical defense is affected from you Faith stat. When I said that 200 is the max def I was referring to the amount accumulated WITHOUT using armor.

And that's that. :)

If thats the case I'm assuming the formula works as simple as

Total Attack (Total of all factors inclusive)- Defence (all factors) = Damage.
