this event is ####ing retarded....someone coming in new to the game that just started prob hates this game and the developer (i was under the impression that there was going to be some crazy enemy and stuff, not just forcably making you play PBWT and nothing else)
once you beat the phalanx and get up to where the tower knight door is there are 5 archers 2 blue eyes and 2 dark phantom blue eyes and any knight is a 1 hit kill, and nowhere to retreat to because of a 1 hit kill dragon breathing fire up your ass while you stand looking at a firing squad
if they want to go to 4-1 to get an equip boost they get to deal with satsuke who is also a 1 hit kill and everytime he gets low insta full heals and usually runs away to the skele that you dont want to pull
maybe im just pissed because of the bs drop rates and grinding ive discovered that this game is now.....but this is also beyond dumb i couldnt imagine just starting this game knowing how it was but also having to put up with these 1 hit kills and black phantoms......i had my friend talked into renting this atleast, more like buying but i sure as hell dont want him to try the game in this state....doesnt matter tho after telling him what a grind fest it is for certain things he said he wants nothing to do with it anyways

You mostly sound whiny because you think having a +10 weapon will suddenly cover the fact that you lack the skill to fight without a really powerful weapon.
Sorry if I was too harsh, I just had to get some things off my chest. I do agree that this event is evil, though.:frown:

Nah Ice Pick is awesome I've played with him quite a bit. But We're both in NG+ and PBWT is just horrid on top of it allready being hard.
A new player (which is what he's pointing out) is gonna have it just as bad as we both do in NG+ at SL100+
I would seriously reccomend new players just play offline at this point as the halloween event just makes life on the game suck hard. And yeah "Only PBWT" for the event is pretty lame...couldn't we go to area 4 and find all the skeleton enemies with carved pumpkin heads instead? At least that'd be fitting and hilarious.
Or a thrown weapon like the knives and kunai...only it's pumpkin bombs? Maybe thats to "Green Goblin-y" but hey it'd be awesome.

nah man i dont take offense i appreciate the comment and especially straight forward people....its a rare thing these days
but it has nothing to do with the fact of wanting a +10 weapon at all, well....not per say, i mean as a huge pvper and the difference of damage i get from my weapon having an A scaling stat at +4 to a S scaling stat at +5 is a noticable difference and a need for pvp
but more than anything its the fact of spending hours and hours doing the same thing over and over for the same bad result when IMO i feel you should get the item much easier or for actually doing something constructive or earning it in a tournament battle as opposed to just grinding it for days on end
edit and as my man hijiri said i was talking about new players not that my established characters have any issue at all. When it comes to my end i was talking about the drop rates and nothing else.....and thx hijiri
Atlus can't just go adding new monsters, or items. They don't have the source code to edit, so really, I don't see how you could assume it was anything but Black World Tendency. This event is posted in several locations, it's not hard to come across, and it does not effect your game unless you play online. So for one weekend, you could easily play the game offline, and come back when it's over to avoid dealing with it.
If your entire enjoyment of this game is hinging on upgrading a weapon from +4 to +5, I'm amazed you bothered to play it long enough to get a +4. Is the combat not well polished? Is the PVP not enjoyable? Are the areas not atmospheric enough? I mean, sure, if you turn the entire game into a grind to do one tiny fragment of what it's really about, it'll become that grind. So, while I don't wish to defend the overly tedious drop-rate mechanic, you're being unreasonable in claiming that this game becomes nothing but a grind fest. It's not even close to PSO, or RO, or FFXI level grinding, and has plenty of enjoyable things to participate in beyond the little grind you've pigeonholed yourself into.
Certainly it's not a flawless game, but this event was exactly what they advertised. Not to mention that all talk of this game, claims that it is evil, frustrating, and unforgiving. Even if you somehow forgot that fact, you've no real place to complain about the event reminding you. That's what Pure Black World Tendency is, Demon's Souls on Hard mode.

who is to say that they were not secretly added beforehand i know games that have done that....but yes i just misread and im not stuck on that fact, i was just simply pointing out what i had expected and thats it

ive gave this game much credit, and i think it deserves it and yes there are many bugs and issues but you cant honestly say that i havnt been here praising this game to a large degree......and yes i do agree that i am FIRMLY stuck on that pure bladestone and beyond pissed at spending about 7-8 hours doing nothing but runs (and still dont have it), but there comes a point when its a little much and the GAME aspect of the game should be there and i dont think putting players though the grind that want the trophy or the item to the extent it is, is needed. Its not my game...and i didnt develop it. im just giving my 2cents and i also offered alternatives, as im sure you have your own things you would prefer

yes this statement is fully correct but think about if you just got this game today and didnt know anything that you know now....you wouldnt feel sorry for someone in that situation? personally i dont feel the game is very hard (once you get some playtime that is)...now i did get to the tower knight door and i did die (i made a new char today), so i said hey i cant mess with this now ill come back later....but my lvl 25ish guy did kill satsuke and atm he is sitting in the adjusticator room with this noob equip and weap (and did it without any phantom help)......but i know for a fact if i just started the game today i would be wandering why i cant beat the first world. i just feel bad for those people, and hopefully if any are on the forum they know that brand new first time players dont have the exact things to put up with as they do during the event
edit and 1 final thing to say....while this event may not be the coolest or funnest thing in some peoples (or my) opinions. i can appreciate the fact that they try to keep things fresh and tried to do something new......and now that ive sit back and read my post it does seem like im raging on the game.....which some aspects i am very angry about but its nothing like the tone of the post is i guess i just didnt choose my words wisely enough or just let it fly but at the end of the day it is a good game.....just some aspects of it really get to me sometimes, if its things i dont have any say or control over (like spending 7 hours farming 1 item and getting 50 some chunks but not 1 of what i need)

I think you are a tad too harsh with the whole thing ICE. Sure, the game is even more inhuman due to the whole BWT shift but there are lots of +++s to the whole situation. Some simple examples:
1. A player who manages to get past 1-1 will probably have 3-4 times more souls to use than we did when we started the game. This is gonna make things much easier early in the game, especially for classes like the Royalty which starts at a SL of 1.
2. The loot drops. A new player might not be concerned about finding a Pure Bladestone per se, but getting a Knight or Spiked Shield or maybe a mid lvl sword is surely better than what I used to have on my char my first 5-10 hours into the game.
3. Yes, the Dragon/Blues/Arbalest situation that you're describing IS almost impossible to beat if you are not familiar with the game. But how did the rest of us cope with situations that at first seemed impossible? We adapted. We LEARNED. Maybe it will take some time for the newbies to get past that point. Maybe they will NOT get past it due to the current rules set. But after a week, those who were going to stick around for the duration will still be here. And they will be better players because of the whole affair.
4. Last but not least, it is a chance for all of us older players to get some items that would otherwise require hours of Tendency tweaking to acquire. Earlier today I got my Talisman of Beasts and Colorless Demon Soul (Stonefang) from a - before - WT dungeon. If you ask me that was a gift from the Heavens.
Its even harder but the rewards are bigger. Those who really wanna play will continue to do so anyway. Remember what dragged us all into this game? The challenge and knowledge that we would be able to meet gamers after our own minds.
So, this event is fine in my book.

Tendency shifting to black isn't hard at all, I've allready done all areas black events...WT is another matter all together. 4/5 of them we're done before this event.
I hope for Christmas they do a pure white event, which might be alot better then black on halloween as more people are more likely to get the game on christmas then halloween.

EDIT: But yea, dude if you don't want to farm then don't. You can run around with a +4 weapon, but wait, you know what happens if you do.

I got to New Game+ with a level 80 character today. Imagine my pain as I step into the stages anew, with more difficult enemies AND PBWT, and get my butt soundly handed back to me. The PvPing was awesome though. So many invaders and people to invade that I kept myself busy and happy.
Managed to clear 1-1 and 2-1 that day, along with a good portion of 4-1 (before dying horribly), but dang is it hard. I don't think it's a negative thing though.
Besides, anyone notice the little messages when you log into the server? It clearly explains, even to new people, that the game is going to be tougher than normal for a few days.
If they can't take it then...baaaaaw, it's obviously not the game for them.

well it says he will seek to descend the land to darkness, it didn't say it would descend TO the land. so i read it as he will make the land darker(aka pure black WT) not that he would come in and hide somewhere waiting for somebody to gank him.

Yea I realized that it didn't say descend TO the land, just i mean if you mention a powerful demon and halloween and land you don't think "The demon is non existent and the land is going to become PB" I mean why even mention the nefarious demon if it actually has no impact at all, the wording was just a bit over dramatic.

@OP Why?
This event is a reward for those of us loyal players that pre ordered the game. Why should they reward new players, jumping on our bandwagon?
I still fail to see the grindfest. Demon's Souls IS NOT a grindfest. You have no idea what a real grindfest is.
Go pick any F2P game from here: http://www.mmosite.com/
See what a real grindfest is about. And at least DS has engaging combat and not click and watch:yawn:
I think the nefarious demon refers to the Old One, causing the worlds to go black.

stop being so dramatic. All I said was that there is no point in mentioning a demon that doesn't exist.
Ok, quick question. Am I going to be able to get my original WT back? I was playing in Soul form just so I could get PWWT on my first playthrough. Am I going to have to either start over, or will Atlus restore our original WT?
because I've already beat 2 out of 3 bosses in world 2. How am I supposed to get the Dragon Bone Smasher? (that was my main reason for going white)?
Am I going to have to wait until NG+, where all the monsters are going to be as hard/harder than PBWT? whats the deal? Also, why is everyone saying that "if you're playing online, it would have gone black eventually anyway"? I have been playing in soul form, and suiciding in the nexus every time i revive, just so i can keep my white WT.

The Old One does exist, you're just being overly dramatic by calling anything you don't like "dramatic". You need to step back a bit and realize that not everything has to be spelled out so literally. It's that sort of attitude in the industry that has made Demon's Souls so refreshing in the first place.

The logical step would be for Atlus to set all the worlds back to neutral by tomorrow. I doubt you will get your original WT just because that would mean that they have that saved somewhere in their servers. That's very unlikely.

Oddly enough I have White on a few of my worlds from murdering lots of Black Phantom versions of regular enemies and PB NPCs, and even player PBs.
Backtrack in Soul Form and be careful. Kill lots of those enemies, then revive near 2-3 and wait around to see if you get invaded. Summon some blue phantoms as they tend to raise white tendency. With some effort, it's possible. Even with the server being mean.
I did it by accident...

I've got to say, this has been one of the most entertaining thread reads on this forum thus far. I've grown quite fond of reading certain people's responses. (Ice Pick, Leventa, Sferzar, Balfor, FiOth, Syra, HijiriOni)
It's incredible that Atlus / From Software are supporting the game. Most companies DO NOT support games after release at all. So, for companies like them to support a game to even shift a world tendancy to spice it up, to me, is incredible. That gives me hope for the future of further support. Holiday (Christmas) season PWWT? Think of what they're doing for us... They're showing us that they have the ability and the want to support the title for us. That is huge.
I understand your pain Ice. I just started NG+, SL 100+ and I have been experiencing the dominance that is PBWT. It's a huge challenge, but it's making the game feel like it did when I first started it. I'm now having to strategize again over trying to just brute force with strong weapons like I was doing at the end of my first cycle. The BP Satzuki in 4-1 was a great experience on this cycle. I ended up removing all my armor and using a Dozer Axe. I have NEVER played like that, but it worked remarkably well giving the situation of his one hit kills, which he gave me the experience of several times and the frustrations of full healing quite often too.
This game is what you make of it. If you want to grind for a certain stone then it's going to feel like a grind. Don't project what this game is to you on everyone else. Not everyone plays like you do.
This PBWT gives me Colorless Demon Souls, Talisman of Beasts, The Blind, Hiltless, Guillotine Axe, more souls, a chance to strategize again, challenges and more invasions.
In the words of Bill & Ted, "This is a most excellent journey."

Actually I never understood the old one as being nefarious... he is kinda like a giant chunk of land thing, he didnt look evil, he actually looked harmless, if he was scaled down alot he might make a good pet. I understand the story line makes him this evil thing but I never actually saw him do anything evil. Unless of course I am thinking of the wrong thing, Ive only beaten the game once so I could be mistaken
I am willing to accept that writing it like that makes is fit the story line better but many of us just feel as if the game SHOULD have done more than change tendencies. (i get it atlus cant because they are just the publisher blah blah blah) but it wouldnt have been to difficult to have a free Halloween based add--on or something, it would have taken 10 seconds for them to ask the designers for that. Half the world celebrates halloween or a similar holiday, it would have been lucrative for the designers to whip something up.

That was thoughtfully said, I couldn't have put it better myself. I wish I hadn't given Blind to my Girlfriend though. Man, the pain I went through for that by going backwards from near 5-3. THE BLACK PHANTOM GIANT CLUB GUYS CHASING ME.
I cried a little inside when Selen rolled gracefully through the murk and I dumbly followed her. It's glorious.
The Old One does exist, you're just being overly dramatic by calling anything you don't like "dramatic". You need to step back a bit and realize that not everything has to be spelled out so literally. It's that sort of attitude in the industry that has made Demon's Souls so refreshing in the first place.
You clearly have little to no insight into the rigors of game development and design if you honestly believe that. Let alone the costs inherent to placing DLC onto PSN, especially for free.
Wow, entitled much?

I ended up sneaking up from the front side to her back and doing a critical. I remember the island of giant clubbers though. Oh how I enjoyed being chased through a poisonous swamp with 4 giant club swinging neanderthals chasing me and my wife screaming right next to me, "RUN! OH #### RUN!" and not being able to roll or barely run.
Experiences like that make this game have exactly that... experiences. You will remember them and when you play other games realize that you don't have memorable experiences like the ones from DS.

Actually, being a programmer myself I understand how simple it is to add new content if it was programmed correctly to allow for that in the begining (Conversely how difficult it is if its not done right). Judging how this is professional work I would say that it was programmed correctly. I will agree that it will take time and multiple people creating the visible aspect of new items, but the the programming aspect should be pretty simple if they used templates to create weps / mobs. But I think addons will make the consumers happy, and isnt that the point? you make something that will make the consumer happy so that they will buy it and tell their friends therefore selling more?

Thanks for the compliment Obsidian.
And also, you guys have to remember that Atlus may not have developing license over Demon's Souls. So even if they wanted to create DLC or addons or whatnot they wouldn't be able to from a legal point of view. Atlus has stated it many times, they have publishing rights. They were able to bring the game to the US, that is all.

What's wrong with one-hit kills? I worked a mage up to over 100, and I've spent most of the game in fear of of 1-hit-kills from npc enemies.

Äh, who the #### plays as low level at PBWT? I don't. My first PB was at the very end of the first game, and that only for 4-3 (mage) to gain much much souls.
btw: You just need to leave the WHOLE game (press the button on the ps3 controller), if you die, and you go back to the last save point.
btw2: Warding is the best.

I can't stand quitters. Seriously, it's part of the game. If it's by computer or person, take your beatings like you should.

That's no cheating, just play the game, how it should be, with checkpoints and not without.
So i play only offline btw.

They do, but they're ONLY the publisher. FromSoftware created and developed the game, so they have the say of what changes with the game, updates, DLC (if ever) and a sequel.
Atlus can support the game and PR for the game to a certain extent.
So, they have a "little" say.

I lost around 300,000 - 500,000 souls. I was invading people, and whoever killed me won a prize. The guy that killed me sent me a message and was like, ":surprise: :o :surprise:"
Then I gave out candy and played Borderlands with a few friends before going back to Demon's Souls. lol

actually, it is cheating. as you are cutting the system before it can save in order to prevent yourself from dieing. hate you rage quitters in every form be it a pvp rage quitter or in your case, a pve rage quitter. zomg i am gonna dies! must reset my console so i don't have to walk three feet from the 4-3 archstone to get my souls back!

The game was designed without checkpoints, how it should be. You go ahead and believe you're playing it right when your save corrupts due to the massive amount of data abuse you're giving it, though.

TBH I got this game Halloween day and knew the event was going on. My mentality? "They say this game is hard? Lets see how it feels to play as a thief during Halloween first play."
After working on that I think I grew a mustache from the manliness of it all.

Even my wife grew a mustache just watching me bashing my face on pure black Shrine of Storms with my brand new character. Getting owned by Satsuki until I beat him through sheer force of will (and a Quality Estoc) ... phantoms helping me burn through BP skeletons around the back of 4-1 ... the insane amount of summoning, invasion, and dying in 4-2 especially on those BP gold skeletons ... backtracking to the nexus every couple of minutes to buy multiple soul levels ... and then a 20 minute battle of wits and emergency evasion and stealth in the Old Hero's tomb trying to land hits on his back.
If it weren't for the amount of cocktails consumed in the process the names of all the blue phantoms who came to my aid that day would live forever.
PS you haven't played demons souls until you've rolled to dodge a BP gold skeleton's attack, gone off a ledge, and landed on a black skeleton's head. I even surivived long enough to realize how epically screwed I was.

It's right, because the game designer made it possible. If they rly want to, this thing would not be possible.
So, it's not my problem, if some guys want to play this game about 60 hours longer than me, because they won't make it easier.

It's only possible through a method that has a high likelyhood of CORRUPTING YOUR DATA. It think that speaks for itself.
And dying doesn't really set you back all that much, so I don't really see all the time you're saving on this. You're basically gambling away your save data for the possibility of shaving a few hours off your playtime. Doesn't sound like a very solid bet.

My strategy for not playing this game 60 hours longer than everyone else is simple. I don't suck and die. Whenever I die its from a death well earned. I don't don my girlfriends panties and reset the game just from an incidental digital dastardly pixel.
So, in summation:
Dying and resetting - Takes like a minute or two to get back in.
Not sucking and not dying - No time lost!
PBWT Flamelurker one shot because I practiced not dying, like real men.
