So, I have The Twelve Kingdoms and Utawarerumono sitting around, waiting to be watched. Has anyone seen either?

Twelve Kingdoms is great, but it never got a real ending. :-( I'm liking that TokyoPop is releasing the novels here. Maybe I can get some closure (especially with the whole Taiho story arc!).

(Oh, Vincent Alexander, I don't know exactly where you are in Illinois, but if you're near the AMC Barrington 30, that's where we'll be at!)

Lol at old boy avatar.

But, currently, I'm on episode 9 of Mobile Suit Gundam 08th. So far, it's really good, and I like it.

It's one of my favorite Gundam shows, esp the ending!

I really liked 00 17, not sure I'd call that a saber as much as a long lasting mega beam rifle thing though, I mean, I thought the saber bit denoted a short range cutting weapon, and that thing is more of a canon.

I think it's a shame 00 has such (imo) terrible mech designs, it would be my favorite Gundam if it didn't. I mean.. I guess they are contemporaneous and aerodynamic and whatnot (things like the flags) but...

I was happy to see a Taozi show up again. I think that is the only MS I like this time around. Zaku type monoeye things 4L

Vincent Alexander

The booby traps are in the forest behind the creepy house. There is an actual trail lined with young, planted trees that lead back there. Unfortunately, it is closed off with a gate. The only way into the forest is to walk in from way farther over.

^ They added a lot of stuff to the first compilation/remake movie, I was sceptical of it, but it builds on the story nicely. The second one is supossed to have a new unit, a character not in the show, and some other stuff. So I think they've changed enough, I just hope it's for the better. Trailer and videos for it can be seen here: http://www.japanator.com/new-trailer-for-the-rebuild-of-evangelion-2-0-via-a-korean-cam-ninja-6715.phtml

I just watched the first Casshern Sins and it seems pretty interesting, wondering how it builds up. Gundam 00 is still kicking ass, too. Episode 2 of MS Igloo 2 was finally released, but it was also sorta disappointing for me, I didn't really like it. I hope they close strong with the last one. I am not sure the Shinigami thing really works with Gundam.

Also, Saint Seiya Hades on and off. It's pretty good, if repetitive.

Just watched all of Technolyze. It was good, but had a very bleak ending! If anyone's considering watching it, watch at least 3-4 episodes before you judge. Episode 1 is, uh, "special" (it had about 3 lines of dialogue that make no real sense and a lot of heavy breathing).

Texhnolyze, ya mean? I hate that show. It builds up sort-of like Gungrave (a favorite), and definitely gets a lot better as it goes along. Midway through, Texhnolyze is awesome. My local BB isn't, probably because I'm in a college town and the anime sells like hot cakes. But I drove an hour across the border to Missouri and the BB there was having the 50% off. The selection is going fast though, so I'd go quick if you want to get in on it. Make sure to call up the store, mention you heard about the half off and then ask if they are participating. I might drive an hour again tonight and go into Kentucky to check another BB.

I really don't care for Afro Samurai, but $9 for a blu-ray was a sweet deal. Don't pass this 50% off deal up.

Yeah, I saw it with otter and I kept hearing "this is art". It's really beautiful and intense. And I love the care that goes into the design of third party characters. It isn't immediately obvious who is a red shirt and who isnt, so things like the episode 2 stuff leave you going WTF. We were quiet for like a minute going WTF, it was great.

It's the kind of anime I can recommend to anyone, it is beautiful, its intense, and it's full of emotion. I prolly wouldn't have seen it if not for you mentioning it Foryth, so thanks :)

Gundam 00 is still good times, too! I hope they animate Unicorn after it, because their super pastel colorful thing they have going with it right now might get a bit old over the long term. The last episode was great.

Villian of the week: Oh I wouldn't huh? betcha I would *poke poke* Who's mad now big boy *poke poke*
*Kenshin goes saiyan and either kills him or not depending on the week with his dull blade sword*

Couldn't agree more.

QFT

I haven't seen Soul Eater, and it does look good but... I dunno. Busou Renkin just kind of... does everything shonen right, I guess is the best way I can put it. Plus I'm a little gay for stuff involving alchemy and alchemic lore, so that may be influencing it a bit.

Edit: Okay, just finished Busou Renkin. The show has gone up quite a few rungs. All I have to say is...

It's been my staple diet for almost a century.

I did my first time, but I dunno, thinking back on it, it was relatively boring.

Dennou Coil, on the other hand, is very lively, has a proper amount of comedy, and focuses around several characters. I really don't see where the comparison to Lain comes from. I mean they're both about augmented reality, yes, but that's pretty much where the similarities end! Haha.

Finished up episode 3, and I must say, it's quite good.

Normally when I watch anime, it's never a gradual thing. I either blow through a series in a week, or just don't latch on to it. TTGL is one of those animes I have definitely latched on to, though. I loaded up 13 episodes on my PSP, figuring it would last the trip to NYC and back. It didn't even last to go one way.

It manages to be many, many good things at once. Serious themes of racial tensions without the plodding pacing of Gundam Seed; comedy balanced with discovery of self worth, intense action with intense sexuality.

Yeah, the ecchi is pretty pointless...like it is in most anime. I don't really care for it's inclusion, but considering how much TTGL goes into obsurdity, it fits. Plus Yoko manages to balance whorishness with being cute, so I feel less dirty.

The rest of the cast is incredible too; Kamina, while stupid to the max, is so infectious you can't help but root for him. And seeing Simon grow so much is satisfying. And then there's the rest of the crew, from Ron to the trigger happy guy to the two brothers...it's varied, and entertaining.

And...once you get to that part, you have to appreciate how much balls this anime has.

Hitoshura
03-09-2009, 09:32 AM
^ Yeah, TTGL is an amazing show.

It's a show DC might like if he actually gave anime a chance instead of overgeneralizing it. I even showed it to a friend of mine who dislikes anime due to overgeneralizing, and it got him to realize that *gasp* some anime is actually enjoyable! Imagine that.

I liked TTGL, but I think it was over-hyped to me before I had a chance to watch it. Thusly, even though I think it's a good anime, it didn't quite live up to my expectations from hearing about it. Still, it's definitely worth watching! (No one ever mentions my favorite character though! I guess no one else liked Rossiu?)

Finished Le Chevalier d'Eon a few days ago. It was good, but kind of went in an odd direction that made the whole story almost pointless? I guess I would call it more a "journey" story than a "destination" one. If you can pick it up cheap though, it was very cool.

Started watching Glass Fleet today. Looks pretty damn cool so far!

Soul Eater is the only thing in my life that matters right now.

The series ends about one week before I leave, so I'll have been able to see it through to the end, which I've never done with an anime (or anything, really) before. And I'm sure I'll cry during the last episode, because I'm that kind of person.

Soul Eater will probably replace .hack as the media franchise I have the most #### of, once the stuff starts getting localized. Because I plan on buying EVERYTHING.

Shame I'll be away during the new Fullmetal Alchemist and Valkyria Chronicles anime.

Just wondering is Kiba any good?

I watched about 15 episodes fansubbed a while back (before it was licensed) and it seemed like a fun shounen romp. There are your typical tournaments and a young boy with a power he has no idea how to use. I didn't get to see much resolution to it in the short time I watched, but there's a sideplot involving the main guy's friend and how his life gets effed up.

Er, all in all, if you can get it cheap, it's fun. Nothing special early on, though maybe it gets better later?

I haven't really done anything more than thumb through the mange. Music is a large part of the series and honestly I didn't really think the manga by itself does the show justice.

The story/ character interactions in the anime does change pretty drastically as the show progresses. But I have no clue about how closely the show mirrors the manga or how the two correlate as far as episodes and volumes go.

Ehh? I heard nothing but good things about it, but I guess I will have a little time to watch it before the second set ships.

I just finished watching Gantz, and I wish I had listened to whoever it was in this thread that told me it was horrible (I think it was here at least). One of the worst anime series I have ever seen, every second of it was painful to watch just because it was so ####ing stupid. It takes everything I hate about the horror genre and everything I hate about the worst anime and combines them all into one super ####ty series that I regret buying. This is why I haven't bought aniem in a while, because so many series are just not worth my time watching, and this was one of them.

As for the Champloo set, I doubt there will be anything special about it (other than the fact that it's one of the best series every). All of the DVDs have been OOP for some time (since Genon stopped making anime), so the boxed set still goes for around $140 online.

Z-Hen, Valkyria Chronicles and the Full Metal Alchemist remake.

I unfortunately haven't had the chance to watch all of them yet, but I have to say Shin Mazinger seems by far to have the most interesting art style. Retro style with modern quality, kinda like Casshern Sins. I feel it might end up being the only interesting show this season.

Jesus. Only episode 3? Do you have a life or something? Get watching those bad boys!

And I have a feeling Dragon Ball Kai is going to be awful. I watched the first episode to give it a glance. The idea behind it is great, but then again, it assumes that all of the filler was horrible. If you google all of the things that were filler, most of it is indeed ####. Unfortunately, a handful of it is still awesome.

The Full Metal Alchemist remake I've been excited for, but I'm still waiting to hear if the same voice actors will voice Ed and Al for over here. If not, I won't touch it. I watched the first episode in Japanese, and was sad to see a lot of the over-the-top "kiddy" stuff still in it. I prayed they'd be gone, or toned down a lot, but my dreams were destroyed. The first episode was ya...The problem is that with animes, just like normal TV shows, they have pilot-like episodes. If a pilot is awful, the show is canned. With Gungrave, you can tell they were worried the first episode would be boring and not attract anyone, so they cut an episode into the beginning and pushed the initial "pilot" back. The last three friends I've shown Gungrave to, we've skipped the first episode.

As for Mazinger, I'm very unsure for now, as that episode made very little sense IMO, but had some pretty cool animation(especialy the sometimes nearly endless transitions, I found those pretty creative) and non stop action. The thing with greek mythology seemed pretty interesting, but it's pretty unclear how much of a role this'll play in the series.

Is the valkyria chronicles anime even out yet? and if so, where?

I finished Fate/Stay Night. It was pretty impressive... definitely glad I gave it a shot.

Now I'm watching Soul Eater. It's whimsical, but in an awesome kind of way. It has cheap fanservice moments, which I don't care for, but there's enough genuinely funny moments to make up for it. And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFPt5NuuzuM&feature=channel_page).

I got a chance to watch Last Exile sometime last year through rental and then was sad to find out I couldn't find it anywhere for sale. I found out they are doing a rerelease in May sometime.

Now I will have to scrape up some money in the coming months to buy such. :)

I'm pretty sure I've seen this on a few good anime retail sites. (RightStuf seems to have some in stock).

Last Exile was a Pioneer/Geneon title. I believe Funimation picked up the rights to it and will be re-releasing a box set for it at a considerable price reduction over it's initial release.

Still wish Robot Carnival would get a re-release.

For me I don't buy too much from online sources anymore. Most of my buys are local retailers which limits some of what I buy. That and I'm cheap so I won't generally play an arm and a leg for a series because we have a mortgage and a family and I just can't justify it unless its special or on sale. :)

Ain't that the anime that raised suicide rates in Japan or something? (higurashi)

The spring lineup isn't bad. I like Shangri-La if only because the lead female doesn't have gigantic boobs (the trannies do ugh.) The story makes little sense though. No government is dumb enough to take carbon credits seriously right?

Hmm, well, it's not a super cute show by any stretch of the imagination. Sometimes the characters can be cute, but, the show is much more of a murder mystery/psychological thriller for the first season. I don't quite know what to classify the second season as, but that's where the story seriously gets intense and you start getting more answers. But, it's a rather bittersweet show for the most part, I think if you liked Casshern Sins for it's bittersweetness, you'll probably like Higurashi. Sadly, it's one of those shows that you may need to stick with for awhile for it to really catch your interest, depending on what all interests you. Honestly, I didn't care too much for the show after the first few arcs, but once I hit the first answer arc, it started to really pique my interest, and then the second season was just amazing.

I'd say at the least, watch the first 4 episodes (that's the first arc). If it still doesn't interest you much, but you're willing to see if it turns into anything more, I'd say watch the next 4 episodes, and then watch episodes 16-21 (16-21 is the first answer arc, it's the answer arc for episodes 5-8). After that, I don't know what else I could say, except the second season gets much better! But, without all the development of the first season, it would probably be a bit awkward and uninteresting.

Also no, Higurashi didn't raise suicide rates, I don't believe, but the one notable thing was that there was some girl who stabbed her father, a police chief, to death, and so a few murder-ey animes airing at the time (Higurashi, School Days, etc.) had their openings edited to remove lolis with weapons.

I saw it back when CN actually showed some good anime shows, which was a few years back, I'm told the episodes are all jumbled up in the english dub release though so I havent looked into getting any of the sets.

From the 2 I saw it seemed pretty interesting, always liked mysteries ever since Scooby Doo.

I've been watching Betterman which is just great, really love the music it fits the anime so well.

CN was the best when they used to air stuff like Case Closed , Lupin the 3rd, Ronin Warriors , Speed Racer, & Gundam (circa 1979) :D
but now I just go & buy/ import DVDs since they dont show older anime:(

Gankutsuo, BoogiePop Phantom, Ergo Proxy, Texnolyze, DieBuster, Michiko to Hatchin are good, maybe lesser known. I'm watching and wanting to get Paradise Kiss, Loveless, Denno Coil, and Trinity Soul.

I just saw Ghost in the Shell 2. Perhaps one of my most favorite animated films in a long time.

Just watched Hellsing Ultimate Volume 6 and I loved it.
The new ending theme is a great tribute to Seras and the Wild Geese, I wish could download the song.
How long is the "ground-hog day" story arc for Haruhi Suzumiya supposed to last?
