Indifferent? The Movie and the series both had pretty decent endings. I hope it's good/faithful to the manga and not just filler.
Sorry, wrong choice of words. I can't bring myself to hate anything about FMA, despite all the university-length essay blogs that criticize it.
Still waiting for a new Battle Angel Alita anime and Clamp to finish X. :?
The X anime was never finished? I only saw the first few eps but I had read the manga already and it was a bit dull, on Alita there are only like 5 episodes form a bunch of years back right?
I meant by indifferent that that is how I feel. I felt the show had a good ending and am unsure how theyll continue it. I'd like someone elses adventures in that world or something cause the Eldrick story seems pretty done.

I thought it was finished at like 26 episodes.
Yeah, X/1999. Volume 17 of X (X/1999) manga left me hanging. Maybe Clamp will finish once Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic conclude this year.
There are only two OAV episodes for Alita. I'd welcome a new OAV similar to Hellsing Ultimate.
Then again, hell will probably freeze over first b4 either of my wishes come true.
Edit: took too long to post :?
I really liked the first Alita manga, last order not so much.
I was sad there weren't more episodes, I thought the first two were pretty good.
The first Alita manga is amazing, I agree.
However, Last Order puts the entire Alita universe into perspective. Plus, the action and story balance each other very well.

That's a knightmare? I thought its something else.
Yes, it is a knightmare. Knightmare just refers to any of those robotic combat machines.
And about Suzaku, there is nothing wrong with him.
I disagree. The guy's seriously ####ed up because of what happened in the past (possibly a spoiler so won't go into details) and he is deluding himself that he can truly restore peace under the control of Britannia. That is such a naive thought it makes me laugh. If my country were in the same situation and I saw a guy with that kind of attitute I would really hope that he would die. In the most painful way.The way I see it it was like this.
Fair warning, spoilers:
Suzaku: I'll kill my father, who is the Prime Minister of Japan, to end this war!
*moments later*
Suzaku: Britannian soldiers! Did the war stop? Is Japan at peace?
Soldier: Uh...yeah! Sure kid!
*soldier proceeds to beat the #### out of Suzaku with his rifle*
Suzaku: Why?! I thought I was saving the country!
Really, he's just dumb as a rock to think he can turn a colony back to a sovereign nation. Though it's ironic that he has all the benefits that native Britannians usually don't get.
Regardless, Code Geass is a hilarious train wreck.

One good thing about Moribito is that the quality of the animation is consistent throughout the series rather than having a few really good looking episodes with a massive downgrade thereafter.

My girl rarely watches subbed anime. I am studying Japanese and was watching Paprika with the subs. You should have seen how she questioned the subtitle writer's English when the "surrealism" kicked in.
Her look was priceless. I felt pain laughing at her when she saw that the refridgerator and the microwave really did lead the parade. hehe

I have seen the first two movies and really like it, but I am a bit confused about the plot. Is this supposed to be based on a tv series or something? It is based off of a novel that you can find translations of online. The novel is divided into 7 chapters and each movie is 1 chapter.
What i dont like is that the chapters skip around in terms of timeline and the movie is FOLLOWING IT EXACTLY.
Timeline order is something like Chapter 2,4,3,1,5,6,7 >.>
The novel explains more of the plot somewhat since the movie has to rely more on visuals. SOme things are better read than seen
And if you read Tsukihime, you would be able to find some similiarities between the two. There is a reason why Kara no Kyoukai is sometimes called the "Tsukihime prototype" :D
Flußkönig
08-24-2008, 10:56 AM
^Yeah, I realized they were skipping through time, but it wasn't all that clear to what extent. The end of the 2nd movie seemed to be close in time (I am guessing before) to the 1st movie, but was sort of puzzling due to the fact that Shiki was in a coma without any real explanation.
I will probably just wait till they are all out before watching the series so I can actually appreciate the story.

Besides Naruto, Bleach has some of the worst filler episodes I have seen in an anime so far. After awhile you are looking at 40 episode story arcs that are nothing but filler.
Shippunden seems okay (granted I watched 2 episodes, remembered the good times, and haven't seen anything since but...)
The Naruto filler made me so sad. Never seen bleach, it good?

Big fan of Disgaea and I will third it's being pretty bad. It's not so much a show about the game, but random lameness using the games characters.

I watched Diamond Dust. It has more fighting than the first movie but I thought the story was much worse. Senna was one of my favorite characters introduced in the Bleach series and she was only in the one movie >< Also im so tired of Code Geass R2 at this point I just want it to end. The thing that bugs me is there was much more emotional attachment to the chars in the first season. I mean when Shirley lost her memory that was a big scene for me. When Shirley died or Nunnally "died" or the fact they have killed like half the cast of season 2 it had no impact what so ever. It was just like yeah whatever, what kind of stupid #### are they going to show us now?

This series sounded interesting to me:
Yakitate!! Japan
Azuma Kazuma isn't terribly clever, but he's got a good heart and great skill - at baking. Since childhood, he's been on a quest to create the perfect bread to represent Japan internationally. Now, he seeks to enter the famous bakery Pantasia, in hopes of reaching his goal. But plots abound...
More Info:
The story focuses on Kazuma Azuma, a boy on his quest to create "Ja-pan", a national bread for Japan itself. He initially heads to Tokyo to expand his bread-making horizons at the bread-making chain Pantasia; the story continues with Azuma's exploits with his other coworkers.
The title of this series itself is a play on words; Yakitate translates to "freshly baked", but Japan has a double meaning. Besides referring to the country of Japan, pan is the Japanese word for "bread" (stemming from Portuguese pão[3]). Ja-pan is a pun for this series. This mimics the style of the names of other varieties of bread in Japanese, such as "furansupan" (French Bread), "doitsupan" (German rye-based bread), "itariapan" (Italian bread), etc.
Besides the desire to create his Ja-pan, Azuma also possesses the legendary Solar Hands (太陽の手, taiyō no te?). These hands are warmer than normal human hand temperature, and allow the dough to ferment faster. This gives him some advantage at the beginning of the series, but his innovation and many Ja-pans are his greater talents.
Although the story has baking as its main theme, the parts that generate the most interest are the outrageous puns in the story. Especially notable are the "reaction" based puns made by the judges, who go to great lengths to prove a single point about the bread that they had tasted. The series in general also pokes fun at the shōnen genre's tendency to be melodramatic over mundane tasks.

I enjoyed that too. It was great how the somewhat ordinary dude, but with insane stamina and physical capabilities, could take on all of the magic users.
Though I guess it was better that the manga ended where it did because having the main character use magic would have killed what made him unique.

Click the multiquote button before clicking the quote one! Kinda clunky. Hope that gets changed back.
Thanks Sei, but it doesn't seem to be working for me. Unless I am wrong and the button with the + - Quote isn't the multiquote button.

If anyone is willing to give something else a try that isn't strictly Japanese you should probably check out McDull: Prince de la bun (http://www.yesasia.com/us/mcdull-prince-de-la-bun-dts-version-regular-version/1003601667-0-0-0-en/info.html). There are actually a few McDull movies but this is the only one i've seen and must say its fantastic. It's especially good if you are a fan of the Miyazaki tone. Although the movie looks like it is directed for children the messages in it are fairly adult and the animation is amazing.
Alright thats enough of my mcdull rant, there are plenty of clips on youtube and what not.

The first season wasn't really well done, it was just a bit better then the second season was. Overall you don't watch Code Geass for deepness, for it's epic storylines, etc, you watch it for lulz

There won't be a 3rd season, there might be a movie that retells R2 the way the director originally wanted it to be, or an OVA of the Nightmare of Nunally.
But yeah bring on Gundam 00! I got a 3 day weekend next week as well :D
I didn't mind the ending of Code Geass: R2. The first half was funny, b/c of the shared monolouge in between all the characters. Kinda trite, I'm sure other series have executed this type of narrative better.
I squinted and paused throughout the second half of the episode to determine or imagine the fates of my beloved supporting cast. That wedding photo was pain to make out everyone.

Anyone heard of this:
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
At a time when the balance of nature still held the civilizations of mankind in thrall, a single drought could spell the end of a society and doom its inhabitants to piteous deaths. Prince Chagum has been imbued with the power to stave off the drought and bring new life to his empire. However, this is a suspicious time, and he is accused of possession by an evil spirit.
Court advisors only see one solution. Chagum must be put to death by his own father's hand. His salvation is in the form of Balsa, a spear woman and mercenary from Kanbal, the kingdom across the mountains. Her skills are legendary, and although reluctant, she is held by a mysterious vow to save eight souls before she dies. Can she fend off an entire empire and make Chagum her eighth soul?

Just finished reading Angel Sanctuary and it was very entertaining. Of course the whole incest thing was disturbing, but as a whole it's a definite recommended read unless your really religious or close minded. I have to say my favorite character out of the bunch was Uriel because he had such a laid back and cool balanced personality that I enjoyed all the scenes Kaori Yuki put him in. I also watched the OVA,but was ultimately disappointed on how it turned out. It was fairly true to the manga, but everything was so jumbled together that it wouldn't make much sense to someone who was not familiar with the story. Anyways I have no idea what I'll read next, but something with less drama and more comedy is due after this mind**** :).

If you love the Vampire Knight manga, you'll probably like the anime. I found the first season's dose of yaoi and extreme angst a bit TOO much.

Thanx for the warning about the second season.
Caerula's flashback from Gunnm: Last Order is mature and touching. Yukito Kishiro didn't open the flood gates angst, but managed them sensibly. Sure, dedicating nearly 150 pages to a well-choregraphed fight helped too...

It'll probably be a while, but I predict it will eventually come out. Given the whole Bandai Visual USA mess, they'll want to get season 1 back in print, and then the Gundam committee in Japan has to then decide if Igloo 2 can come out. Since it is a newer one, the committee will probably want to rush it, but we'll see how Bandai Ent handles it...

Yeah... as a yaoi fan, I'll admit that Level-C was just... well... okay? (And the manga was a lot better than the anime!) Putting it into correct pacing would give you something along the lines of Sensitive Pornograph, which I'm not sure whether the anime or manga was better... I like them both!

They're making a new FMA series that's based on the manga, unfortunately.
I'd rather Bones make a Darker than Black Season 2
Kain Mare
12-10-2008, 06:09 AM
So... this is going to be a FMA Ova type deal?
Syl; Hellsing OVA expanded what Gonzo f'd up when they did Hellsing. While I liked the Hellsing TV, I sooo much prefer Hellsing OVA.
The FMA tv series perfectly expressed the bond between the Elric brothers. Bones achieved the most important aspect of the manga. Gold star for them.
Bones should move forwards, not backwards, and always twirling, twirling...
Vincent Alexander
12-10-2008, 09:47 AM
I think I mentioned this way earlier in this thread, but what the original Hellsing was amazing at, the new one wasn't. And what the old one was horrible with, the new one was amazing with. So, I'm not sure which I like better.
And a completely new FMA series based on the manga would be awful. I agree that the series perfectly expressed the bond between the brothers. I just pray that no matter what happens, they keep the same voice actors.
*FMA Spoiler* (Just in case)
The only thing I truly dislike about the show is how the brothers end up in the other timeline. I don't mind them going there so much as the fact that where they end up is boring as Hell. I love the show for the alchemy and such, and the brothers going to a world that supposedly has none is like Superman losing his ability to fly.
I think the FMA Manga is a lot better than the show. I think I'll like this one if they stick close to it. The show skipped a lot of the stuff in the manga, and goes quite dramatically different after a point.
I really didn't care for the movie, either.
Also, Macross Frontier. It gets better towards the end, and I am really liking the music.

The anime follows the manga...in a way (with fillers, no doubt). And recently, the latest release is Tokyo Revelations, which ignores all the fillers and goes straight to where they left off before the filler-fest began. The animation for this OVA was upgraded and looks neat-ish. But nothing too impressive, really.
But really, if you want to try this out, best you just stick to the manga.
I've given up reading it (hated how the story turned out later), but yea, go for the manga
And that is if you have the patience to download chapter by chapter. Just so you know, each chapter is only...6-7 pages. But consider this; would you prefer to download chapter-by-chapter or episode-filler-filler-filler-episode filler?
The choice is yours.
I was wondering if I could get some opinions on a few series.

I really liked it way back when, the original series is pretty good, and different from a lot of stuff. The plot makes a pretty good amount of sense and clicks beautifully too. Heard bad things about the OVAs that followed and never really watched them though.
For some reason Rayearth comes to mind where the OVAs were completely different from the show. Not saying its the case, but its what I think I heard back then. It's been like 10 years though, that I remember what happens should show how memorable it was.
Also, funny.
Holy #### @ Macross Frontier ending. The series really picks up, the plot is awesome, and I actually quite like the music, especially the second intro. Might be my favorite Macross show. The ending wraps everything up quite nicely, a lot of thought went into this plot.
Strongly recommend!. Also 00 Gundam. I really dig how they are introducing all the one year war concepts and reimagining everything in a pretty interesting way. All it is missing at this point is Zeon. My fingers stay crossed.

Nice, slow paced slice-of-life series with a bit of drama and mystery. Just don't expect to have all your questions answered in the end.
Has anyone else read Last Order vol. 10? Great plot development and I totally didn't see those plot twists coming in the end. I just wish this volume had been all about Alita for once, Sechs' bits just aren't nowhere near as interesting (Zekka was fun though). I can understand why Kishiro decided to make him (her? it?) into the secondary main character, but still, with the waits being this long it'd be nice to focus more on the main story.
I have read last order. It's okay but I really liked the original manga better. I thought the original ending fitting.

I have read last order. It's okay but I really liked the original manga better. I thought the original ending fitting.
True, the original series was more compact and quickpaced. Last Order is getting a little too slow and overblown. I also liked the original's gritty, post-apocalyptic atmosphere more than the new one's slick sci-fi look. Still one of my current favorite manga series though.
I really enjoyed Last Order 10, I can't wait for Toji vs. Anomaly confrontation in the next volume.
I think the different pacing for the original Battle Angel and Last Order suite each other.

Okay, that's it. Why is it called 'animu'? Back in my day, it was called 'anime', Dragonball and Sailormoon, respectively. :D

I think it's still called anime.

I really enjoyed Last Order 10, I can't wait for Toji vs. Anomaly confrontation in the next volume.
I think the different pacing for the original Battle Angel and Last Order suite each other.
Any idea when vol. 11 will be coming out? Some sites list the release date as April 14th, but that seems a little too soon to be true.

Got a few other series I'd like opinions on:
Moon Phase
Karin
Kanon
Twelve Kingdoms
Jubei Chan
Record of Lodoss II
Gurren Lagann

Havent seen much of Twelve Kingdoms but from what I have, the series looked good. Only downside is the anime ended and the books kept on going.
Record of Lodoss would have been great if not for the original series. If you loved the first, you may be disapointed with the second series.
Gurren Lagann was on sci-fi recently, very good series that only suffers the downfall of repetitive dialog. Only so many times you can hear "Who the hell do you think I am?" before you want to punch someone. Still, it was better then a number of other sci-fi series out there.

Tsukuyomi ~Moon Phase~ is pretty good if you are into vampire-loli-goth-cat girls that sing about cat ears
Karin is a good romance I suggest that you read the manga and watch the anime as they give two diffrent stories
Kanon (2006) is ok too overrated
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is EPIC you should watch it as fast as you can

Moon phase is a pretty good story if your into loli romance type stuff. Karin is also very good. I liked Kanon 2006 its much better than the older Kanon. It has some romance, comedy, sadness etc. Now Tengen Toppa is a show that I consider overated. Its just so ridiculus by the end that it took away the interesting story they started with.

Read a lil bit on the plot (for Gurren) and it made me think of Elemental Gelade for some reason. I enjoyed EG.
Ouran Host Club made me think of Fruits Basket.
The being trapped undergound thing in Gurren, actually reminded me of another anime, ViolenceJack vol 1, but I'd guess its not as graphic as that anime o_O

Last order already reached Vol. 12 in Japan a few months back and there is also the Battle Angel/Gunnm Gaiden.
If Viz decides to release the Gaiden alongside Last Order, then April 14th seems like a plausible street date.

I also bought Resident Evil: Degeneration, and it is damn good movie.

I also saw and enjoyed RE: Degeneration. Haven't bought much anime recently due to money being low, and with video games taking my priority. I do watch fansubs a lot though. Mainly watching Clannad After Story, and I need to start watching Ef: A Tale of Melodies soon since it did just finish. I'm also reading the Naruto manga(japanese chapters).
As for english dubs, I finished watching the first half of Ouran Host Club, and have been keeping up with the Lucky Star releases. May start watching Code Geass and Gundam 00 in english soon.

I think that may be due to the reverse harem setting. Besides Fruits Basket, I don't know much Animes that I've seen in which the setting was all boys and one girl.

I can't believe no one is talking about the casting for the live-action Cowboy Bebop. Keanu Reeves will be taking up the part of Spike.
Meh. Ever since James Cameron put the Battle Angel movie on the back burner 10 years ago, I've given up on live-action adaptions.
Even when comic movies are released, its painful to endure the press coverage by entertainment "news" shows.

Just about every Live Action Adaption I've seen has blown. What happens is that the ppl making the film take no effort to learn about the original product, be it a video game, anime, or comic. And they just make their own version of it.
Only good adaptions I've seen so far are the newer Marvel movies, Spider Man, Iron Man, the 2nd Hulk movie.
Just look at the DBZ movie its a teen film that has little to nothing to do with the anime. Piccolo's a frigging white bald guy for gods sake. Its like they never even saw a single episode of the anime.

I didn't really care for Black Lagoon at first, but in the end, I loved it. It definitely grows on you. Second watch, I loved it even more. BL's greatest strength that 90% of other TV shows/anime fail at is character development. I hate shows where the characters don't grow between episodes. Some #### happens in an episode, then they pretend in the next it never happened. Not BL though.

Anyway, didn't see Gundam 00 Second Season #17? That's gotta be the biggest beam saber in Gundam history.
