The Japanese have lower moral standards than Americans and don't shield their children from the types of things we do.
You know, just because they have an attitude towards sex that actually makes sense and wasn't passed down by "god", and aren't hypocrites running and hiding all things violent and changing anything that could be shown to die to robots doesn't mean that their standards are "Morally lower".
In fact a lot more of their culture deals with morality, than in the States.
One would think that someone like you would be able to appreciate a culture that stays out of other people's business as long as it doesn't affect them.
The U.S. does not have "higher" moral standards. Rather low, actually, especially by the so called "defenders of morality".
Repression and censure do not equal morality. Not obsessively shielding children from any and all moral questions does not equal a lack of it.
I knew someone was going to take that wrong and blow it out of context
"Moral
1. of, pertaining to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong; ethical: moral attitudes."
Morally, something can't ever be absolutely "right" or "wrong," as it's completely up to the viewer's perception. It's subjective. America typically perceives many things as "wrong" and tries to censor them from us rather than allow us to form our own opinions on us.
"One would think that someone like you would be able to appreciate a culture that stays out of other people's business as long as it doesn't affect them. "
I do, in fact, I appreciate the Japanese culture more than American culture by a wide margin. America has higher moral standards because we are extremely bigoted and far less open-minded. I never, ever equated "higher moral standards" with "good" or "correct."

I saw this! Agh! It was great, but. . .
MAYBE SPOILERS. . .
. . . YES, THERE BE SPOILERS HERE!!!
The ending upset me. Voices ended horribly depressing, Beyond the Clouds was kind of depressing, and this one ends depressing. All three are beautiful films and I love them, but I swear I don't want to watch any more of his stuff if they all make me depressed! :-(
END SPOILERS!
It's a gorgeous and moving movie in three parts. If you like Makoto Shinkai's stuff, you'll love it. Lots of trains. ^_^

Finished reading Yellow yesterday. It was good for a 4 volume manga. The artwork was nice and the characters meshed well with whole atmosphere of the stories. I'm reading the Earl Cain Series now. Gonna start off with The Cain Saga then read the sequel Godchild. I already finished the first volume and I'm liking the whole gothic vibe.

Some series I finished watching recently:
Le Chevalier d'Eon
A political conspiracy show with supernatural elements set in the 18th centruy France. Good story and animation, especially the swordfights. I felt that the characters were a little distant and the ending was somewhat depressing (but good), but all in all a good show.
Flag
A realistic war/mech show. The story follows two reporters and it's told entirely from a camera's POV. Might seem gimmicky, but it's works really well. I didn't like the ending, but a great show otherwise.

Just finished reading The Cain Saga. An entertaining romp, but I wouldn't recommend this one to kids under bout 15 years or age. There was a heavy dose of incestuous relationships that I thought were ####in gross and to a much lesser extent the violent nature of the read. That being said I DID enjoy the manga as a whole so I'm gonna read the sequel Godchild next.

It's weird how Ral Grad is a spin-off of Blue Dragon. I read the whole thing online and it was interesting.
Right now I've gotten to the third episode of Nabari no Ou. Watching fansubs on PS3/HDTV is cool.
Rebuild of Evangelion. Pretty awesome, quite a bit of it seems to have been changed, and the CGI fits better than I thought it would.
Quite good.

Godchild is...well, from my pov, it's pretty average in terms of storyline. Artwork is beautiful (an upgrade of Angel Sanctuary and Bloodhound) but yes, lacking in story, to me. It's like a typical yaoi/shonen-ai story if you look at it in some way.
It's from volume 1 - 8, but Kaori Yuki's drawing seemed slightly messy and not proportioned nicely towards the last volume.
But yes, I'm not stopping you from reading it. Go ahead. But you'll find yourself in love with the drawings more than the story itself.

And I hope you say this, Allie, with the knowledge that the Cain Saga is some of her first work. Angel Sanctuary came after / during her later volumes.
Personally, I feel that there's not much to hold me to Cain Saga. Even the art, while still very good, doesn't hold the same value that AS held for me. I felt she also put too much energy into the incest and bi-love that she lost the point of the what she was doing. Kaori-sama is a naughty girl but she isn't trained very well in how to balance it correctly.

Oh yes. ^_^; I noticed that. Her other short manga, Cruel Fairytale, was around the time when Cain Saga came about. Well, the art was similar, in a way.
Another one, Kaine, was probably during AS time, because the art was somewhat similar as well.
Yes, I agree with you. I really felt that way when I read Godchild. It was like something was about to...burst out and tear that strange feeling in me when I read it. Honestly, I was sick of it. It's like Cain being the center of attention, like Miaka in Fushigi Yuugi (sorry, i don't quite fancy this anime ^_^; ).
I think the only bi-love that was nicely done by her was BoysNextDoor. Though short, it was beautiful. Moved me to tears.

As much of a fan of her series I am, I haven't read all her stuff, but Boys Next Door was really good. Though, when i was reading it, I kept imagining that it was Kira and Kato (maybe 'cause the art looks close to them). So I can't voice an opinion about it being the "only" one, but I can definitely agree it was very good.
Edit: No, sorry, not Kira x Kato, but Katan x Kato. Sorry, got my names mixed up >_<

I could give you her other short works~ =D Bloodhound, another short manga, has similar drawing styles to Godchild, though not as nicely done as Godchild. Story is horrible, but heck. It's her art I crave for. *drool*
By the way, I heard she has an artbook with her works based on fairytales. My friend told me there was a very disturbing picture of Little Red Riding Hood in it. Heard of it before?

Never got that far when I was reading it. I stopped reading it after my favourite character died (it was one of those office dudes...the cool-looking one. He turned out be a good guy, well, in a way).

Just finished watching The Twelve Kingdoms. I was pretty bummed it had to end cuz theres SO much more that can be done with the series. I know theres a manga I could read, but if it's worth reading I'm not sure. This one can pretty much IMO be enjoyed by anyone thats into anime or animation in general. I heard, but it could be just a rumour that theres more to the story. Maybe it's in the manga or more episodes not translated yet...Oh or the creator could still be working on some follow ups..I sure hope so. Anywayz I'm gonna watch Descendants of Darkness now just to see and hear Tsuzuki voiced and animated .

Not exactly anime/manga, but lately I've been reading the Rental Magica light novels. It's a poorly written mess as a whole, but I'm a sucker for modern-day magic setting, and I like the girls. Plus, Pako's illustrations of Honami and Adelicia in the light novels are hawt.

I agree. The part with Misa too and gaah, what more could I say about Light?
You know what? I have a feeling that they're trying to make their movies comparable to animes. Cartoons and real life. =S
Oh well. I think the only actor who played his role well in the two movies was Kenichi Matsuyama (I think that's his name), the one who played as L. I think he was really good at it.

the New Gundam is Gundam 00 and its not related to the Seed universe / Characters. In actually timewise it would take place along time before the events of seed. The Second season of Code Geass is airing now its up to episode 8 I have been following it.
I wish Geass would end and 00 season 2 would come on. Best. Gundam Ever. (subjective, depends on whether you are counting OVA's or not, but still pretty good nonetheless).
Also, Anime version of Gundam Unicorn?

I'm well aware of that. But what I was referring to was the so-called 3rd season of Gundam SEED, which I heard was coming out but that information was not confirmed.
I know 00, I've watched it, and I'm quite disappointed with it, to be honest.

Geass is like a breath of fresh air from Gundam, and it was done really well. Of course, it's not as advanced as 00, mainly because its focusing more on the struggles between Lelouch of the Rebellion against Suzaku of the Brittanian Forces, the current ruling power of the world.
And a bit on Geass. Hence, the name 'Code Geass' and not Gundam. But that bit ain't that important. We're all wanting to know how he'd be able to dodge the Brittanian forces. XD
But as for Gundam, I notice a similar pattern being displayed in all of its series. Even in 00. They're all talking about the same thing (transfer of technology, etc etc, war for the technology, etc), and the story is just based on the same...grounds. Even SEED, even 00.
You see similar roles in different characters, you see similar concepts (i.e.: Masked Blondies), you see a lot of repeats in different time, place, and characters. And the angst. THE ANGST. =|
I suppose 00 IS good in terms of animation and its new Gundam models. But that's about it, for me. I'm pro-Geass. 8)
Geass is Gundam with some concepts from Death note. All of the Gundam concepts are there, and Susaku's Lancelot IS the Gundam in that show. (prototype invincible suit with outstanding pilot). The differences are tangential at best (lack of space travel, smaller robots0, but the political subtext and even character backgrounds are there.
And Lelouch is the "masked blondie". His story is pretty similar to Char's and most of the Gundam Char clones.

Watched Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone and The World's Strognest yesterday... I guess I over rated these movies, probably because I've seen much better anime since the time I first laid eyes on these two movies. They did remind me of a time when the series wasn't absolutely horrible, but it just didn't seem as cool now as it did back when I was in high school.
Neither of these movies took advantage of the DD True HD audio track, which is something I should have known. The video transfer is probably as good as you would expect for a movie like this. I'm sure it looks better on my big screen than the DVD would, but I doubt most people that weren't accustomed to watching HD movies would be able to tell. All and all I am still satisfied enough with my purchase since it only cost me $17.

I dont agree with this exactly, but there are alot of similaries in the show, that I will agree with. Also I really enjoyed the first season of Code Geass. But Code Geass much like Death Note is losing its appeal. By the end of death note I was just glad the show had ended. Code Geass is giving me the same feeling this season. Lelouch is turning into another whiny Light.

I heard that they were making a movie or something to complete the Seed story as well. I figured you were talking about the new show that was actually airing and not the rumors around Seed. I unlike most people actually seemed to enjoy Seed and would like to see more. But I have also enjoyed the new Gundam series alot as well. Im really looking foward to it coming back in October.

I guess this thread is for manga too? So...
I recently finished up the first volume of the SMT: Kahn manga. It's pretty damn cool. Seems to use SMT If... as the backstory, while the manga's story itself is following SMT1's storyline (with some weird twists). So for those of you who can't suck it up and play SMT1 (and shame on you, because it is a ####ing wonderful game), you can probably pick up the manga to catch the whole story. The 2nd volume comes out in a few days, too.

Noein is one of the best anime I have seen. It possesses deeper themes than Berserk. However, Noein is not for fans of mindless action. It is a thinking man's anime. 8)

Claymore is awesome! I won't spoil anything, but it gets better and better with every volume... specially the latest chapters. Where can I meet women with big swords?! :D
Watching Eva, second renewal movie supossedly comes out pretty soon.
Also, G Gundam. Had originally skipped it because I found the premise sort of stupid, but it's actually pretty good, and executed well. Probably amongst my favorite Gundam shows.
I think my Gundam rankings would be as follows:
Igloo, 00 Gundam, 08 MS team, War in the pocket, 0083, Mobile suit gundam, G Gundam, Turn A Gundam, Gundam Wing.
Haven't seen SEED beyond the start of the compilation movie, but don't really care for the art style that much.
Also, soul eater. Although releases of that seem to have frozen.

I've read up to volume 11, but sometimes Claymore strikes me as Beserk-lite. Someone pointed out to me that the only memorable character is Raki (the sidekick/liability).

I love anime, but for some reason just can't get into manga. I don't know why...I really love comics as well, so you'd think manga would be OKay as well.
I think if I finally read a manga someday, it'll be Chrno Crusade, just because I hear it ends better...which would be great, since I already loved the anime's ending.
And sweet signature, Saishu. I watched Claymore a good while back and quit after the 2nd episode...the music was very odd and disjointed (on purpose, of course), the story telling was horrible (especially episode 2) and I just didn't give a #### about the characters. I like manga in that I can read about series that will never make it to anime. Theres alot of really good manga series that are short or just dont seem like they will have enough of a broad appeal to become an anime series. I dont really read long ongoing series like bleach or one piece etc beause I would rather just enjoy whats happening in the anime and take it as it comes along.

Yea I watched half an episode the other day. The most exciting moment of it was when a snake and a falcon attacked each other at the beginning. So yea... :|

Anyone watch Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad? I'm really interested in it, but I have about 200 GBs worth of anime backlogged, so I need to pick and choose what I watch. I'm thinking Beck is going to be good, but I've been wrong before.

I have seen nothing but praise about the Beck manga, but I haven't really heard anything about the anime.
I just started re-watching my Evangelion Platinum edition box with my girlfriend today. (hangover days are the best for this heh) She really likes it so far and I'm having a good time watching it again. :) The only prior anime experience she had was watching the first two episodes of Serial Experiments Lain with me. (which she also liked) We're up to episode 9 now, "Both of you, dance like you want to win!".
I just can't wait for my Berserk manga volume 25 to come in! It's already out in France, but it seems to take a little more time for it to arrive in Quebec. :? I don't read a lot of manga anymore, but Berserk is the one manga that I buy each volume as they come out. I really, really love it.

Haven't posted in this thread in awhile. So I guess I should give a little update.
I didn't finish Gasaraki. I got about half way through before I couldn't take it anymore. Too much talking and not enough substance really killed this one.
Also, I just recently finished Planetes which did a great job of portraying the realistic nature of space exploration. Good character development and a decent plot also made it enjoyable to watch.

Also, I started Beck and ended Beck. That show absolutely did not do it for me. It took two episodes and I quit. Is that way too quick? I mean, I gave Death Note about 15 before I threw that out. Anyway...time to finish my other anime: Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto! Crazy long name, huh?

Yeah, Beck doesn't really start getting good until later on when the mc gets more involved with the band and is learning how to play ect.
Bakumatsu was okay. I thought the beginning and the end were good, but the middle part of the anime just dragged on and sucked horribly. It took a good 3-4 month break before I could start watching it again once it hit the middle episodes.

Im curious do most of you guys wait until a show releases in english to watch it? Or do you just watch whatever is aval? I noticed alot of the series that poeple mentioned they just watched are often older series and I wondered If they waited until they were released in english to watch them or what. I personally have watched a ton of series and dont watch anything in english, usually I watch shows I really want as they release and if I only sorta like it I wait until the season finishes then watch it. Some of the series mentioned are really great but sometimes I see poeple mention watching an older series that was just so/so and made me wonder if that was all they had aval or what made them choose that series over something else.

I'm not really an anime fanatic, but I do like to watch it from time to time. When I get the urge to watch anime I go and look for something that hopefully doesn't suck; which tends to be older shows I guess.
Also, I buy all of my anime and wait for R1 collection releases so I usually end up watching older shows.

I generally watch fansubs, but if I haven't seen something and it comes on tv I will watch it if I like it.
I watch stuff when I feel like it or have time. I don't discuss anime with people or anything, although I will share my thoughts if someone asks, so I am not worried about when I watch a particular show.
The extent of my NA dubbed anime purchases are two GitS movies on dvd.

I was really into fansubs a few years ago (about 6 year ago  ), but I kinda lost interest and only watch shows that really appeal me now and usualy wait to buy the boxset. The last series I watched from begining to end was Wolf's Rain. (which I don't own yet, but plan to)
I don't really care to keep up with the latest anime crazes, all I want is to have a good time watching a good show. Also I'm more of a manga guy than an anime guy, but even there I don't really read as much as before.
I usually watch fansubs. Manga is fine too. Will also get/buy older shows if they are particularly noteworthy, but prefer fansubs. The quality is usually better, I don't pay for a dubbing track that I don't want, and they are much faster.

^Sei, I'm trying to sit through Zeta Gundam (I have to since I shelled out big time for the original box nearly 4 years ago). The characters really aren't developed very well. 'Kill'em Tomino' kills off characters way too quickly for it to be an effective plot device. They are never fleshed out very well.
^ Kaki, I never saw Zeta, just the compilation movies and they are a mess :/. Never saw Double Z, Gundam X, or Victory gundam either. Tried to watch victory gundam once, but the first episode was too disjointed/stupid and the mech designs were terrible.
Pick up/look up MS Igloo, for the best gundam show.
Never seen Seed or Seed Destiny either, might after G Gundam. About 15 eps in.

06-25-2008, 08:56 AM
I had a lot of Japanese friends build up Zeta. I do think the localization has a little something to do with it. The version I am watching has the infamous dub script used as subtitles -- I have heard parts of the plot are off. The newer releases remedy this I guess.
The story still seems like a slight mess. Characters get really moody and pissy with each other with no real explanations as to why. They introduce way too many new MS too quickly, and the combat is kind of lackluster. I don't know - there are a lot of elements of Gundam in general that I find kind of silly.
The show does look pretty good for the year it was released. I think Sunrise must have blown a big portion of their budget on the intro.

Anime nut here. I watch pretty much in Japanese and Japanese only. And I'm loser enough to keep up with stuff as it is first airing in Japan just so I can grab it the moment it is subbed (such as season two of Code Geass, which will probably be as awesome and ####ty as season 1). Sadly, that is why I have a huge backlog of anime. I'm afraid that when something gets licensed it'll be too hard to find online, so I grab it when I can and store it for when I'm in the mood. I'm going into Film (third year now), and I actually want to go into Anime if I can. I write a lot, and I picture a lot of my stuff as Anime, and some as live action for good ole' Hollywood stuff. Of course, I'm prepared to fail and live in a van since my career choice isn't the most...stable.
But to be honest, I prefer Japanese over English just because I usually hear the Japanese first so that is what my mind gets used to. Example: Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. Those dubs are pretty bad. Not horrible, but bad. Unfortunately, they were what I heard when I was a kid on the Action channel, so even now I still watch it in English. There are SOME things I love in English though, such as Full Metal Alchemist and FLCL. And Ghost in the Shell I'll watch either way (depending on if my friends are over since they hate reading subtitles).
Also, I tend to like Fansubbers a lot more than what gets released on DVD (Bleach and Trigun). The Fansubs for those shows are ten times better than what I have on DVD. Very depressing.
^ I agree with most of the above post.

Alot of poeple didnt like Seed because they said the main character was sorta emo or something. Personally its probably my second favorite Gundam series. I think the new 00 is my favorite. Seed destiny wasnt as good, but even then if you accept the characters for what they are that series isnt that bad either. My only issue with Seed Destiny was about half way through they seemed to change the direction the story. They put in more of the Seed characters and took away from the new characters Destiny was originally focusing on.
Also I usally watch fansubs of episodes as well. What really bugs me is I have a bunch of series on dvd as I buy alot of anime because I want to help support the industry. But I never watch the dvds because 9 times out of 10 the subtiles they use are crappy, often americanized, sometimes if you were to listen to it in english even the meaning is different. Usually I buy the dvds to support the show but I keep my fansubbed verison to watch.

Ya, Gundam Seed definetely had its trip-ups, but every Gundam does. I think they have a list of #### they have to have in every Gundam show. As for Gundam 00, I haven't watched yet. I have this problem where I can't watch a show until it is all released. I've got up to the current episode downloaded, but I love being able to sit down and watch everything at once. First time I watched Gundam Wing and Vision of Escaflowne, I just laid around on my couch and watched them both straight through (not completely back-to-back...I took a few hour nap after Gundam W).
I like trying to support Anime by buying the DVDs as you said, but the subtitles are sometimes so God awful. .Hack//Sign, Cowboy Bebop, Witchhunter Robin, Trigun, Gungrave, Vision of Escaflowne and Gundam Wing are all I own.
00 is done, there is a second part coming in I think September, but 00's story is complete. It has pretty conclusive, ending too.
It is a bit more action based than most of the shows. I think it's in my Gundam top 3.

00 isnt done because it does have a second part. That would like saying after 25 episodes of Seed aired it was done because they took a break on the airing schedule. You need all 50 episodes for it to be "done". Right now you have a part one were it breaks to do a small time skip. To me it left off right when it was getting really good. When it ended I wanted to cry a little inside because it was at such a good spot in the show. There are usually only a few shows each season I really look forward to watching each week. When 00 was airing it was at the top of my list. Summer this year seems like its going to have a week lineup. They need to hurry with the summer shows and move onto oct already so I can watch more Gundam! I hope season after summer has a good line up. From the previews I have seen I dont have much hope for summer!
Vincent Alexander
06-26-2008, 06:48 AM
Ya, I was going to say. I didn't think 00 was done. Almost #### a brick there when ya said it was. I need the last 25 episodes before I can start, especially if what is out now ends when it is getting good. That would probably kill me to have to stop and wait.
^ Well, I think the second part is more of a semi independent continuation of the characters and setting, but I say 00 is done in the sense that I believe they'll have a new cast (or revised, anyway) a new buildup, climax, etc, and obviously new mobile suits.
Also, I loved the Cameo appearance at the end of 00. I hope its in 00 - 2. Anyone know what name it'll go by yet?

I like dgrayman alot. The first 50 episodes are licensed so they will be harder to find probably. I have the first 50 or so episodes by black order until they stopped subbing and have been watching Shinsen subs since then. They arent the fastest group to release but I dont like swapping sub groups unless I have to. Shinsen had a torret for the first 1-50 episodes that they are no longer seeding but someone else might have recreated the torrent that didnt use there tracker. (they dont host the first 50 episodes anymore since they got licensed.)
For the story the episodes that have been airing for the last 2 months or so have been really good because they are direct from the manga. Hopefully we can keep up the story for awhile. Only thing I have with these long running shows is because they hardly take breaks, ie 4-5 episodes a year, they end up using a lot of filler.

I dont really read any anime magazines. There are so many news sites and forums / boards that you can find to keep you updated on new releases, when stuff is licensed, whats popular etc that it seems kinda pointless to pay for a magazine that does the same thing but slower. Since magazines like newtype etc are forced to focus on whats current in the US and not whats current you read about stuff in a magazine that you watched 2-3 years ago if you keep up with current stuff on that is airing right now.
Also I agree about the Blue dragon anime. I tried watching it in japanese before they even ported it. I only managed to get about half way through before I couldnt take it anymore. Whats worse is they made a second season.

For those who care, Funimation will be releasing the majority of Geneon's unfinished titles starting in September.
I will definitely be picking up Hellsing Ultimate #4.
I've got Batman: Gotham Knight ready, but I think I'm going to save it for tomorrow when I'm not as tired and will enjoy it more.
Just finished watching the first part of the blu-ray that came with the SE MGS4, don't know why I put it off so long. Kojima's seriously a pretty cool guy. Despite never really looking at the Metal Gear series as pretentious like a lot of people do, I always imagined him as a much more serious, somewhat abrasive person. Definitely have a lot more respect after watching that, and for the rest of Kojima Productions, too. I'll probably finish that tomorrow, as well.

Hellsing Ultimate makes me a sad panda. They took what was wrong with the first Hellsing, and fixed it (not patched, but fixed the #### out of it). But then they took what was amazing in the first one, and ruined it! I actually still watch the original and like it more because of the music. There are many more reasons, but that is one of my biggest.
And Batman: Gotham Knight was damn awesome. A lot of reviews weren't too kind to it, so I wasn't expecting much. The only one I didn't care for was the very first story. The second one, Crossfire, was amazing (as were the rest). But Crossfire is pretty epic feeling with the music and all.

I liked it enough to buy the platinum edition boxset and watch it about three times. Once with fansubs a friend got me a few years ago, once again when I bought the boxset two years ago, and now a third time. The show takes a very different turn in the last few episodes. It gets a lot more serious and dramatic later in the series, especialy around episode 18, and then episodes 25-26 become almost abstract, with stuff mostly happening in the character's head. If the last two episodes turn you off, I thought End of Evangelion was a much better ending and it basicaly replaces episode 25 and 26 with something a little more concrete.
Though I understand that Evangelion is not for everyone even though it seems to be a rather popular show. The begining is rather light hearted with a bit of action, humor, story and filler, and later it gets very heavy on drama and introspection. But the show doesn't hold much interest if you don't have the last few episodes to put the whole story together.

Been watching Karekano and Macross Frontier.
Frontier picks up a bit after the first few eps, and the battle scenes have been done fine. I am sad that a lot of the sci fi stuff seems to have been forgotten, and that zentrans look like elves, and that somehow there are manticores now, but otherwise it seems like a good way to wait for Gundam 00 2nd. I also like all the inside references to previous Macross shows (like 0)
Karekano is funny. Got bokura ga ita too, but haven't seen it.
I wonder when Evangelion rebuild 2 will come out. Can't seem to find a date anywhere. Picked up the manga, it is pretty good, too. Also Angelic Days, it's pretty different. the local library carrying Manga and anime kicks ass.

Finished up watching Hellsing. Is Hellsing Ultimate the same thing? I looked at descriptions on two anime sites and the decriptions for both are exactly the same. Or is Ultimate a continuation?
Also watched Black Blood Brothers, Hand Maid May, finished Iria Zeriam, and watched Naruro Set vol 7.

Hellsing Ultimate is a a redone version of Hellsing that tries to stick more closely to the manga's story and such. Personally, I hate it compared to the original since they don't have the same kick ass music. Seriously. Music can make or break a show for me, and it broke Ultimate into a million pieces.

Most definitely not. It is very similar up to the point where the two fake vampire brothers get killed (this all takes place in the first OVA though) then it has a totally different storyline about nazi vampires. I have been told that it is more faithful to the manga storyline for whatever that is worth.
Definitely worth checking out, but I thought the hellsing tv series was horrible. Edit: Lol anime music? wtf are you talking about Vincent?

I sometimes ponder how much an anime's music selection affects the actual show and people's perception of the actual show. Some shows have soundtracks that are just that amazing:
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Trigun
Black Lagoon
Hellsing
Witch Hunter Robin
Just some that come to mind. Know what I mean? And Hellsing Ultimate's music sucks horribly compared to the original Hellsing.

Yeah Yoko Kanno can put together an amazing OST. I am actually listening to Call me, Call me right now!
Know what I mean?
I understand the concept, but I don't personally agree with it.
Comparing a tv series to an ova with a different plot solely on the music just seems incredibly arbitrary and a bit shallow. I could understand if you were recommending whether or not to buy an ost or something, but you are not.
Just to be clear (since I know how sensitive people can be around here), I am not saying that you are not entitled to an opinion or that your opinion is wrong. I definitely don't get your reasoning on this one though.

The girls with gun series, Noir, Madlax and El Cazador de la Bruja. Also Tsubasa Chronicle. A few examples I can think of were the soundtrack for the anime really helped make the story more enjoyable than just watching the story. To me music has a big impact on how much I will enjoy a story. If its a mediocre story but has an excellent sound track I can still find myself really enjoying the show. But if its a bad story with a crappy soundtrack or almost no soundtrack then I usually dont enjoy the show much.
I like the soundtrack of Macross Frontier. It's one of the reasons I still watch the show.
Other soundtracks I've liked are the ones for Wolf and Spice, Death note, and MS Igloo. Gundam 00 too. that's about what comes to mind right now.

I'm not usualy all that much into anime soundtracks, but I often find myself listening to the Akira Symphonic Suite and the two Wolf's Rain OSTs (by Yoko Kanno of course). That and music from most of Hayao Miyazaki's films, Grave of the Fireflies and occasionaly FLCL's soundtrack.
I'm currently almost halfway through Gurren Lagann. Great show so far! At some point I was starting to think it would keep the boring "new enemy appears, Kamina beats it up" routine, but it took an interesting twist. :)
I also started reading the Akira manga. Listening to the symphonic suite while reading really gets me into it. I'm loving it so far.

I kind of lost interest in Frontier a while ago, I can't wait for the second 00 season to start though. Currently watching that PSN exclusive anime, Xam'd: Lost Memories, it's pretty good so far.
^ I almost did too, the start is terrible. IT really picks up in the latest episodes and the fights are choreographed well. There is also a bit of fanservice and reference droppings of previous Macross shows.
I also cant wait for 00 2nd. I guess Shinzen won't be doing it tho, which is :(
Also, has anyone kept up with Persona Trinity Soul? It should be about (if not) done, did it get decent in later eps?

Hrmmm...okay. Here is why the music matters so much to me (this affects video games as well for me). Music is so expressive and when used correctly, really helps convey the emotion of the scene. Be it sad or happy or angry or whatever, music can really help you feel that scene. Saying music is bad for me is just as important as story and characters. When a video game or anime isn't expressing the emotions of the story and characters to the fullest, which music can help with (not always needed though), you aren't engulfed by whatever you are watching or playing as much as you could be...to me.
For example, the directing and timing of the music in the original Hellsing when you first see Alexander is perfect but lost in the redone version. I wish I could think of a billion scenes right off the top of my head where the music really just added to the scene and made it something else completely.
Does that make any more sense? I can't really say much more as to why it means that much to me, but at least we'll understand each other.

Dual, have you seen Akagi? I have been wanting to watch that and Kaiji for awhile now but I am a bit confused as to whether they are related and if so which to watch first.
If I remember correctly Akagi is about Mahjong and so probably isn't all that good. Regardless, I still want to check it out one of these days.
^ I'm pretty sure they're not related, surprisingly, I was just talking with my brother about Kaiji and he want on to talk about Akagi and how it focuses on Mahjong. I hear that later in Kaiji, there's a game that has to do with Mahjong (the anime doesn't finish things), but I'm pretty sure the two aren't really related. Since I haven't seen Akagi, I can't really recommend it. You can probably decide whether or not you'd like the rest of Kaiji after the first few episodes, as it never really gets that much better.

Im usally pretty open on anime but Kaiji was one of the few animes I couldnt watch because I couldnt stand the art style. I wouldnt consider myself picky as I have seen close to 400 series but there was something about the artwork used in Akagi and Kaiji that I cant stand to watch. As for Flußkönig question the 2 stories arent related they are just done by the same company. I believe they have the same director to.
^ I'm pretty sure they both started as manga by the same guy. As for the art style, it was kind of irritating at first, but I got used to it.

I felt like FMA went way, way downhill after the halfway point and didn't ever reach a very high point on top of that. It's the anime I've watched that I felt had the biggest problem finding a balance between anime zaniness and a serious plot. Things like jumping between unfunny "haha, the main character is short, let's watch him overreact" moments to "crazy middle-easterner just blew up your daughter you mutilated into a half dog creature into a puddle of blood" just threw me off.
I'll admit that I cried a lot at the ending and that it was considerably better subbed than it was dubbed (Al's voice is intolerable 100% of the time and I can't stand Ed's when he's trying to be "serious"), but I don't see why it's gotten as much praise as it has for being as riddled with plotholes, cliches, and general shonen BS as it is. Again, it's not bad, I just don't understand why people say it's so great.

Yes. My favourite was Rise though, it had a nice built-up, but a bit too noisy for my ears to enjoy. Mizu No Madoromi (Fantastic Children ED), on the other hand, has a more melodious tune. She has other songs too (not sure if they were featured in other animes or not), and so far, my most favourite track from her was Moon.
Apparently, it was a track from Turn A Gundam. The original singer was someone else, but ORIGA made a cover for this song...

And I really wasn't feeling that Turn A Gundam piece, but then around 2:00 it pulled me in. Strange I've never heard since I own the Turn a Gundam soundtracks.
Been watching the 2003 Astro Boy series. Unfortunately, I could only find the dub. Most of the voices are okay, but they replaced a lot of the music with the portions of the new opening and changed the episode order (I can't figure out why, especially because it moves some episodes introducing characters several episodes back). I like it, but I really wish I could have found it subbed, instead. There's something about me that has an uncontrollable affinity for android stories.

What I like and don't like about Geass at the same time is that it is Gundam 0079 from Zeon's perspective with somewhat remixed characters.
Lancelot is the White mobile suit that is impervious to everything and always pretty much wins regardless of strategy or anything else. And like Amuro he doesn't really fight for anything in particular, other than happening to have a mobile suit.

That's a knightmare? I thought its something else. I actually spent 50 bucks on a Guren-Type02 model kit, but I still have yet to open it. I guess its rather time-consuming to build it, then paint it.
And about Suzaku, there is nothing wrong with him. He is trying to restore peace to Area 11 by reaching the ranks, which seems to be rather difficult. I guess both sides don't seem to be good in my point of view. Lelouch is unfit to be a commanding officer, but at the same time. Neither is Suzaku good for the job.
The cool thing about Code Geass is mainly the knightmares and mechs, finally something different than Gundams and Zakus.

Yes, it is a knightmare. Knightmare just refers to any of those robotic combat machines.
And about Suzaku, there is nothing wrong with him.
I disagree. The guy's seriously ####ed up because of what happened in the past (possibly a spoiler so won't go into details) and he is deluding himself that he can truly restore peace under the control of Britannia. That is such a naive thought it makes me laugh. If my country were in the same situation and I saw a guy with that kind of attitute I would really hope that he would die. In the most painful way.
Knightmare is the generic Geass mech name, just like Mobile Suit is the generic Gundam name and Wanzer is the generic front mission name. It refers to a category of vehicle, regardless of the particular model.

And about Suzaku, there is nothing wrong with him.I disagree.
Scary.. (O.O)"

And I really wasn't feeling that Turn A Gundam piece, but then around 2:00 it pulled me in. Strange I've never heard since I own the Turn a Gundam soundtracks.
The title was Moon, originally sang by Gabriela Robin. That's why it sounds a wee bit different from the link there. It's a pwetty track~ =3
Finished Ergo Proxy. Enjoyed episode 15 (I think it was that funny one) very much. And the rest are all rather...0.o
Eitherway, it ain't too bad. Looking forward to Serial Experiments Lain and...hmm, I'm getting bored of anime. I'm actually getting interested in Japanese dramas~ XD

If it doesn't have a mecha, it's not Japanese. XD
Has anyone checked out the Blade of the Immortal anime?
The first was ok, but things became more interesting after that.

Eh, the general consensus is that Bee Train =/= quality, no matter how long they take.

right now im getting into an anime called Soul Eater....it's pretty awesome so far.
Just watched the raw version of Code Geass R2 episode 19.
Man, the #### really hit the fan for Lelouch in that episode.
Soul Eater is fun, I hope that Medusa's sister Arachne is introduced.
Btw, am I the only person that thinks Chrona is a girl?

I don't know, from what I have seen so far it seems pretty clear that Chrona is a guy.
I just finished watching Monster. It took me around two years to watch, but it was definitely worth it.

One of my Gundam Seed DVDs was bad, so now FYE is ordering a new box set to replace mine. That's what I get for buying from Bandai. I looked it up and they've sold a bunch of defective DVDs.
I'm halfway through watching Bokura ga Ita. This show is torture.
Hmmm, the fansubs and scanlations for Soul Eater contradict Chrona's sex.
Yen Press is domestically releasing the Soul Eater manga soon, so I guess the mystery of everyone's favourite androgynous character will be solved...
Spoliers btw:

I have received the samurai 7 DVD box set and from what I have seen its really good the story stays to its predecessor seven samurai while at the same time adding more to the story it deserves just as much praise as the the 1959 award winning film.

How is it, do you like it?
Chrona is undeterminate, the fansubs give it a sex because english doesn't work too well without one.

Gundam Seed or Bokura ga Ita?

I like Bokura ga Ita, but it really messes with my feelings. I've finished the first 17 episodes and I want to root for Yano but he reminds me of all the crummy mistakes I made that caused me to break-up with a girl. So I dislike him in the sense that I dislike my own stupidity.
I want to see Take score on the rebound. Take's the man.

No, but it's still a really ####ing good show.
Best anime ever: Paranoia Agent
Also, Jing: king of bandits is extremely good
I love how they made japanese Spidey's eyes squinty. further proving that no-one can out-racist the japanese, even against themselves.
