Hm, though it is a sticky subject, this is how my friends and I define "gaijin anime" (as in, what people outside of Japan consider anime):
Anime has to be created by someone who's been brought up in the Japanese culture for the majority of their life so that said culture is their main culture. Theoretically, a white guy who was born and raised in Japan proper (not a US military base or something) could create anime as the spirit of Japan runs through his veins (sounds cheesy, but you get the point, right?). Conversely, a Japanese person born and raised in an American fashion can't really create anime. There's something so, well, *Japanese* about anime that one has to be born of Japan to create it. Not just the art, but the way emotions are shown and how people react and relate to each other, and even the motivation for creating a particular story — these all make up anime. In this case, Teen Titans and Avatar are not anime. I'm not sure how Transformers or IGPX works since I don't know who created/directed the bulk of it.
eh. . . that went longer then I thought it would. This is just the view of my friends and I, and I'm not looking to pick a fight so sorry if you don't agree!
*Stamped with Maxine MagicFox seal of approval!* :3 Totally agree!!

:3 So now instead of arguing about TT, I've somehow managed to bump us onto the track of Transformers.
See how complicated this gets, Sayck.
If I had to take the arguing side, the only thing from what I know that I could come up with is that the inspirations came off of Japanese models and designs, the show sometimes displaying models before their release.
We could play this game from all over the place. Inspirations do not equate to making the finished product native their inspirations place of origin.

Well im hooked now :P . Finished ep9 yesterday. Im just gonna wait for Ep11 before i watch 10
That's a good idea to wait, I just saw episode 10 and I'm suffering after this cliffhanger >< Lawrence got his ass handed to him and I knew it was coming.
XD I'm assuming you are talkinag about Spice and Wolf!
I can't wait, either! The last episode was great! I, too, could see something coming as easy as he got the armour and all, but more to the point, I was wondering when he was going to start being persecuted for traveling with Horo! Lawrence has started to get a bit of an ego and this is really going to pull his reigns in now.

And I totally agree. Look, LOL, Kakizaki, if you want to fight this, I'm the wrong person to do that with. Never watched the show, know nothing about it, and I don't favor old school anime too much. ^_^ Normally I don't mind playing devil's advocate but I'm afraid my knowledge is too limited this time. I never stated until now what my opinion is. I've only been stating general facts.

Lawrence should have never done extortion in Spice and Wolf :(
Since the cover to the labyrinth manga is done separately by another artist, how is the interior art?
Bleach died. Though, people have been saying it's made a comeback. Who knows.
Hang on, Bleach is over? I hear it's still going on.
... I didn't say anything about DBZ for kids  But you're still wrong.
DBZ for angsty goth teenagers (what I originally said/meant) = Bleach
DBZ for kids = DBZ is already for 8 year olds
Worse than either show could ever be = Naruto
Not over, no, but it might as well be dead. And yes, Bleach is much, much more worthwhile than Naruto. If I recall rightly, there was a long section in the Naruto manga about Sasuke sitting in a barrel, half naked. I never got there, and I'm glad I didn't.
Original story arcs for Bleach and DBZ were both good, from my understanding. I actually liked the Bleach one, and I can't say much about the DBZ one, as I've only seen the randomly played episodes that Cartoon Network used to air (which subsequently made me hate the show with a vigour).
Naruto... does it actually have a plot? Or just a bunch of random mini-arcs that don't even tie together?
And what's IGPX, then? A Cartoon Network original show that was animated by Production I.G.
That did nothing in regards to explaining why TT is considered Japanese animation.
TT and IGPX were both produced in similar manners, from my understanding. Both were ideas that came from American companies, and both were produced by self-same companies. Both were animated by Japanese animation studios.
I get the feeling that TT isn't typically considered anime by the hardcore otaku crowd, while IGPX is (possibly because it's been dubbed back into Japanese, I think).
Unrelated to anything at all: Sometimes, western companies make the best superheroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Mapleleaf).

http://www.newsarama.com/tokyopop/Henson/RTL6.jpg - randomly googled
Haha, or at least if he was going to do extortion he should have really checked his ass to be sure of the market. It was incredibly careless of him, I felt. With as many *gasps* as he was getting as he pulled into town, a little research woulda probably dredged something up.

Personal bias: I hate Tokyopop. Since that and the Dark Crystal manga was released, I just hate them even more.
Grrr, I can't believe he said that to her! And even knowing deep down that no matter what happens, she'll do her damnest to get him out of it! Tch, she should just leave him and travel north on her own. He doesn't deserver her now!! And after their cute scenes in eppy 8!! :(

^_^ Ep 10 was good, but I think they are once again putting too much into this one plan and I can see SO much going wrong with it. Waaah, I hope they wrap the series up in a decent manner, though. I know nothing is done, but to at least give it a good conclusion but to keep things open for a season 2.
On another note, is there any anime series you guys are looking forward to seeing next month? Here's mine. (http://maxine-magicfox.livejournal.com/194652.html?mode=reply) My top choices are Vampire Knight and Special A-class.

I have no idea what anime I'll be watching next. I just go along with whatever my university's club is watching (right now it's Moyashimon, Dennou Coil, and some other stuff). But right now I only go to the club to see Spice and Wolf and other weird stuff during random hour.
Super Kuma San!
I saw Street Fighter Alpha last night on Sci-Fi channel, and now I'm convinced to buy it again on DVD. I have the VHS tape at home, but we got rid of the VCR last year.

Meh, I thought about watching Dennou Coil but chose Claymore over it. Damn was I ever sorry that I did that. -_-; Claymore was so fuggin' sucky and disappointing! They couldn't even make the demons look kewl while eating guts.

Oh, no doubt, you guys beat me in that part. I'm only in a community college. I have no interest in going to uni. And :\ I guess I am kinda lieing about time. I actually have two hours "free" 'cause I'm suppose to be doing my intern/practicum assignment in order to get my degree. The last three fuggin' semesters were bloody brutal though. I get up at 5:30 every morning to get my younger sister off to school and it was 30 min commune to classes which started at 8 and stayed until 2 and drove back to start work at 3 to 8. Came home, ate, showered, homeworked, -_- and went to bed.
I'm actually ENJOYING this semester. *Phew* Especially when my practicum assignment is the EO website.

I don't watch reality shows, I dislike reality shows, and lord knows that half of the shows the people that within my surroundings watch don't interest me in the least.
I've never heard of your LOST, I've never watched an episode of your Survival, Apprenticeship, or American Idol. I don't care to watch them. You could come up to me tomorrow and tell me that the newest latest fad is "Joe lives in a square house" and I'd pay it as much mind as the 100 or so customers who come up to the counter complaining to me every day about there not being enough mayo on their chicken sandwhiches or the cheese not being melted enough on their burger. I'll listen, I'll interact, but once I'm done with the conversation, what transpired is lost forever as another pointless activity in my day.

Now when you say in the same vein, what are you looking for exactly? Something mysterious and dark or just something that's impactful. Definetily one of the best series I've seen. Very dark and violent and one of the few series that could actually be called mature. Probably the best ending I've seen too (sans Planetes).
Now when you say in the same vein, what are you looking for exactly? Something mysterious and dark or just something that's impactful.
Something along those lines. Likeable characters and some degree of maturity would be great too. I've been hearing good things about Kurau, is it worthwhile?
Haibane was great too.
Maxine MagicFox
03-19-2008, 07:05 AM
I was unable to try Kurau since ADV swept it up so fast and I haven't had money to purchase anime recently. However, it's a BONES production and they've got a decent track record.
I'm wanting to hit up Elfen Lied which they say is dark and very mature. Haha, I typically don't go for the dark stuff which is why it's all on a "put on hold" status. Boogiebop Phantom is another I've wanted to try.
Himitsu: Top Secret (April 8) and Golgo 13 (April 11) look like they might have that dark atmosphere you are looking for but it's hard to tell.

I don't care to watch them either, but I am still quite aware of what they are. If you spend time on the internet or on message boards, you know what they are. That's a little bit about what you have to understand about me. I told you, I'm not like other people. It's not that I have any disdane. I've never watched them. They just don't interest me so if I read or heard, I blocked it out or quickly forgot about it. I don't spent as much time on messages boards as you think and the only websites I typically visit are Zelda websites and even then I soon leave those. You're right, it was probably right there in front of me. I just didn't look at or cared until I saw it every Tuesday as it was going off and House was coming on. I know Apprenticeship 'cause my sister would snag the tv to watch it since her marketing class was really into it.
*Shrug* It's your call though. I didn't even know what survival was for a long time 'cause I didn't have a tv the entire time that it was airing.

Then that puts me about about age 14. At that time I was going through some depression problems and went through a move. I started up a class where I learned how to do HTML coding and started what would end up now being my eight year old site MCLoZ. TV did not interest me and it was at this point that I heard about and started watching Sailor Moon and DBZ on Cartoon Network.
Three years after that, my Dad (Navy) moved us to GA. We were three months without a house and then once we're in we do not have cable or the net for at least a year. I graduated 2002, so I just stayed at home writing, working on my site offline, and reading. When I do get the net I was introduced to unlicensed anime and enjoyed watching that. Nope. No tv. I was also only involved heavily in one forums community - and they didn't talk about that stuff.
Three years later, dad retires, we move again, without a house for a few months again, no tv, no net.

Max do you listen to the radio? Seriously if you listen to the radio you have to have heard of american idol since basically ever other song is from one of their contestants these days. You really remind me of my sister in law. She's anime obsessed and completely hooked on Japanesse culture to the point where she denies knowing anything about american shows and such just like you.

Nah, don't listen to the radio. Actually, even with downloaded stuff, anime openings and such included, I only have 100 or so files. ^_^ I like oldies!! But, I really am not much for listening to music.
And, I never said that I replaced anime culture to as far as much as denying my own. On the contrary. I'M FUGGIN' HAPPY TO BE AMERICAN!! Don't get me confused with some wapanese idiot! I'm not. I just enjoy Japanese animation, but I enjoy it as much as I enjoy Pixar or Disney animations. As for Japanese, the only reason I wish to learn the language more than others is because I might need it to get ahead in my job. Personally, though, I'd much rather visit Ireland or Scottland (no matter how much it rains).
By the by, aren't you guys carrying the breast joke a little too far now? *sigh* I didn't think it would start this big a thing. I'll watch what I say from now on like that.

I really wish I had more money. I never have enough money for that sort of thing. *Sigh* Though, personally, I think I want to save my money to buy all the DVDs more than the manga. There's just a beauty about the anime that the manga (though I realize it was first) doesn't have. I also like the fact that the anime features a much more older and matured Ginko. The manga seemed like a young kid who was just unsocial while Ginko in the anime seems "wizened" and keeps his mouth shut because... well because half the time it seems like he's listening for something.

@Ray - ABSOLUTELY! It goes on its own pace and the concepts are just SO FUGGIN' UNIQUE! The episodes with the dreams that come true and the one where the "mailgirl"'s sister disappears are just my absolute favorites. The one with the girl locked up in the room of scrolls also sticks out in my mind. Ugg, saddly, I never got to finish watching the series. Finished reading Eerie Queerie! a few days ago. It was OK. It's only 4 volumes long and the ending was rather disappointing. There are a few likeable characters throughout the series, but I felt that another volume or two could have helped out cuz there were a lot of characters that could have been developed more..seems like they just threw everything together at the end. Anyways...I'm gonna read The Cain Saga next once I acquire the first two volumes. I already have Vols.3,4 Part 1&2. After that on to Godchild which is a sequel it. I already got all 8 volumes of that one.

I heard that the manga was horrible with random pointless fetishy crap thrown in, and that the anime was exponentially better.
I personally never read the manga (in fact I don't even read manga...).
However what I find that makes Elfin Lied such a good anime is the fact that they left it with so many loose ends and yet still managed to get that "completed" feeling. Of every single Anime that I have seen, the ending of Elfin Lied comes in a close second place.
The first being the ending of The End of Evangelion movie. You can't beat pure genius.

Ouran Host Club is just awesome with the manga. The anime was good and was what got me into it, but I thought that in comparison with the manga, it cut out too many of the serious/bishi parts.
The Sailor Moon anime was what got me into it as well, but never looked at the manga and never got totally involved with it since once Gundam Wing aired I was sucked into that instead.

I don't think that everything always needs to be explained and resolved. Haibane Renmei, for an example, managed to have a very satisfying ending even though it left a lot of questions unanswered. Haven't seen Dark Side Blues, though.
Maxine MagicFox
03-24-2008, 04:41 AM
Nah, there's a limit, though. There's a difference between things that shouldn't be explained - that deal with your own conclusions - and things that aren't explained.
Haibane Renmei was such a spiritual anime in its telling. What they were there for and how they got to be there... we were given just enough hints and then sort of pushed out to form our basis of belief.
Serial Experiments Lain, even, you get the feeling that everything is there in the anime, and it is, but you just have to piece things together.
But, just purposely not dealing with things isn't the same idea at all.

I'm not a big anime fan. I like stuff that isn't ridiculously cutesy, or made for 15 year olds. I dig #### like Serial Experiments Lain just because all the trippiness is fun, Ergo Proxy was kind of cool, and I liked Cowboy Bebop and as for old stuff, Akira, PRINCESS MONONOKE, Grave of the Fireflies, stuff in that vein. I'm VERY picky about what I watch. I'm looking for something different, instead of the usual Japanese-culture hosh posh that I just have a hard time getting into. If you like the characters from Full Metal Panic and you have a good sense of humar then FUMOFFU is great. I really like it. Its much more like a romantic comedy though, as it really doesnt follow the main plot. It just has the characters spending time together. Second Raid is pretty good. I think the first season or Fumoffu were better. Also second raid is short, only 13 episodes so it seems like there wasnt enough time spent on the story.

Dude, $60 for 13 episodes is not a steal, even if it was originally $200. I'm interested in Jojo, but I only spend $60 on anime if it's at *least* a full 26 episode season. And even then. . . it's got to be a really awesome series.

Yeah, it's a pretty cool series. If Geneon USA is no longer publishing any anime, who's releasing Hellsing Ultimate?
Regarding the Tsubasa OVA, it deals w/an alternate reality of the X universe. Come to think of it, Tsubasa pretty much connects all Clamp creations through the multiverse/alternate reality plot device.

It has a Tenchi Muyo feel with a number of the female characters all looking for the main male characters attention. There is a small amount of fan service but overal a cute anime. I'm smack in the middle of Angel's Egg...
.......
??????????????
I'm really hoping someone else has seen this and thought about WTF is going on, because I know it's mostly artsy/existentialism or what not happening, but I don't think that can explain away everything. That, and the characters being melancholic to the point of comatose.
Regardless, moving Amano art!

Just go download it, or watch on youtube now. It's worth it just so you can look at the art, when it was released (1980s), then point and laugh at some of the new anime coming out.

I decided to read Yellow since it's only 4 volumes long. I wish there was more volumes of Descendants of Darkness coming out since it ends on a cliffhanger, but that's NOT gonna happen cuz I believe the mangaka passed away some years ago unfortunately. I've only read about 20 pages of Yellow so far so I don't really have much of an impression yet.
^ Interested, getting (Angel's Egg)

Do we have any Anime Music Video (AMV) fans here at all? I was always a big fan of the music videos from the 80s and have been rather disappointed with most videos I see these days. A while back I got introduced to them and have found that the usage of anime or game cut scenes seems more dramatic and sometimes more fitting than the original videos out there.
Here are a couple links to some ones I like currently....
Song: Sail On

I remember someone sent me a FMA AMV that I was simply impressed by the job done on the actual video. I'm sure everyone's seen this?

Re-downloading Eureka Seven, I really want to get back into Animu after Lost is over since I will have almost an entire year without it.

YES. Eureka Seven was amazing. I ended up watching the entire thing in 3 sittings. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is also amazing, along those same lines.

CODE ####ING GEASS
I would almost rather you watch Code Geass over E7 tbh. CG is fantastic.
Gundam 00 !.
Code Geass is fun but we call it Death Gundam due to the influences by both Death Note and Gundam.
Btw Soul Eater is pretty sweet
I really couldn't stand Eureka Seven, Renton Thurston is one of the most awful protagonists ever and the entire series felt filled to the brim with his incessant whining. I also can't stand Johnny Yong Bosch's performance as Renton in the dub, either, which is a little strange considering I normally like him. In all honesty, I dislike most dubbed children, they consistently sound very annoying. Especially ones voiced by this guy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Dismuke I did enjoy TTGL quite a bit, however, and will definitely admit it's greatness.
As far as Code Geass goes, I've only watched the couple of episodes that have been on Adult Swim so far, but it's been so pretentious I'm almost already fed up with it. Chess is so frequently made a focal point in annoyingly pseudo-intellectual fiction :/ I might just be too quick to judge here, it could turn around or something

I felt conflicted about E7. I couldn't stand the beginning, sorta warmed up to it and then ended up thinking it had a meh ending. There is definitely worse stuff to watch out there.

That is pretty much verbatim how I feel about Code Geass after watching the first two episodes. I am willing to watch a few more at this point though and am hoping it will get better. It doesn't help that I am done with Bleach for awhile (next 50 episodes or something) as the Bount arc seriously sucks.

I'll pass on Pizza Hut. Anything Japan related is the most fantastic thing to you. :p

^ Hardly. :/ Just because it's Japanese and I like it doesn't mean I just like anything Japanese. D: Seriously, Code Geass is awesome, I'm not really sure why you seem so against watching it. You liked Death Note which was fairly similar, and CG is better than DN so...
Flußkönig, you didn't like the ending to E7?! I thought it was pretty epic myself. Almost TTGL ending epic.

The Chess only has to do with the first few episodes. IIRC, there really weren't any other chess related events until R2.

I just watched episode 24 of TTGL tonight, so I am not quite there yet. As for E7's ending, I just thought most of the oh #### moments were a little to convoluted. I found many of Dewey's reasons for stuff to be especially ridiculous and nonsensical.
I was also sick of Eureka and all the children by that point. I was hoping that she and Renton (and the kids) would die and Dominic and his ho would end up being the hero's.
The third episode of Code Geass was a little more interesting as it actually explained the main guy claiming he was a prince in the previous episodes. The blurred out tits were not interesting at all though. :?

Lies! LIES AND SLANDER!
Code Geass is good, but it takes a back seat to Death Note easily. Simply because Code Geass IS Death Note... just simply more deadly and without the notebook... and is also a mecha.

I just figured that was the water from the shower acting as a censor. But episode 3 was epic because I finally learned how to pronounce the name of the show!
I was saying it like "Gee-ous" when it is really pronounced like "Gouss."

I don't know, I prefer blurred to "digital underwear". At least blurred you know that they didn't cut out any of the scene and that, yes, there were boobs there, lol.

I just think blurring stuff out looks tacky. It is like the don't care the least bit about the aesthetic quality of the scene.

And yet... having her wear a digitally drawn bra while taking a shower just reeks of an edit. I do agree at some points like adding towels when girls are in a hotspring or stuff like that. Still, I think blurring is the better way to go.

Watching Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. This has got to be the funniest anime I have seen.
When Kikoku Inoue showed up in Episode 4? I lost it. That was ####ing fantastic, and well played.

Yes! I love that anime (and the first season too). I'm actually cosplaying as Itoshiki-sensei for Anime Central. . . with a noose around my neck, of course! ^_^

1. Bright and colorful.
2. Childish central characters.
3. It's classified as a shonen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dnen). Meaning it's literally intended for boys.
It does have some elements that American audiences would find too mature for kids, however, but the majority of shonen does. The age range is kind of arguable, but Eureka 7 was pointed at kids still in school, to say the least. Not trying to demean it or anything because of this, plenty of stuff classified as shonen is great, but just pointing that out.

Erm... considering how gory the series gets, I cannot possibly agree with you on that. Especially considering the Ray/Charles thing. Shonen seems to be a genre that applies to "young adult males" as well. Also, IMO Renton is only childish because of the MASSIVE character development he receives throughout the show.

Shonen demographic and the manga was serialized in a Shonen magazine. Seinen is directed at "young adult males," that specific phrase being used here (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=19) when defining it. While I'm not saying that adults can't enjoy things like Eureka Seven, I am saying it's directed at an age group many would consider "kids" (i.e. below 18 ). The Japanese have lower moral standards than Americans and don't shield their children from the types of things we do.
