View Full Version : Ignition grabs Arc Rise Fantasia

Ignition has stolen (http://www.siliconera.com/2009/10/22/ignition-grabs-arc-rise-fantasia-from-xseed/) Arc Rise Fantasia from XSeed a la Muramasa. Look forward to another quality localization from Entalize (http://www.entalize.co.jp/) with an emphasis on paraphrasing. RPGamer (http://www.rpgamer.com/games/valknights/valknightses/valknightsesint.html) foreshadowed the exchange of rights 8 days ago:
How is Arc Rise Fantasia holding up? We've been curious about this one for a while now and it just doesn't seem to be getting the love it deserves.
We have no new updates on Arc Rise Fantasia at this time, but you'll see something announced about the latest status on that project sometime soon. What's going on here? Is XSeed in trouble? Is Marvelous being fickle? Can we look forward to Ignition stealing licenses from other companies?
Merge if there already was an official thread.

There is no suitable response to this other than hahahahahahahaha.
And I highly doubt this is 'stolen' as it's more like Ignition took up the table scraps of something XSEED bailed out/purged/omitted/rejected/thrown out/trimming off some unneeded fat.
Not trolling the game or anything, but this news is hil.ar.i.ous.

This is a disappointing news. I've been kind of scared of Ignition after what they did to Lux Pain. Man, I've been waiting for this game forever and the new release date is Summer of 2010...great....

The best way they can redeem the horrible delay is by restoring the underboob cleavage (http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2009/03/arc_rise_fantasia_n_now_with_100_percent_less_unde rboob).

ARF will assuredly be the most ambitious localization that Ignition has tackled to date, and I can guarantee that we won't allow another error-filled Lux-Pain scenario to unfold, nor will we leave the spoken dialog in Japanese with English subtitles. ARF will receive a full English localization, and we're sending a producer from our office to Japan to oversee the recording process.
I absolutely love JRPGs, and I'll do everything in my power to ensure that we handle image epoch's game with care.
Also, if you're a fan of the genre, don't forget about Tecmo/RED/Matrix's Nostalgia, shipping next week for Nintendo DS!
This keeps getting better.

Is it just I, or am I under the impression that Marvelous is going SNK's route (read: letting Ignition publish their own games)?

This sounds like a good thing, (They aknowledge that they've done a poor job at localizing in the past, and are seeking to improve things), but this post resonates with a sarcastic tone. I'm as disappointed as anyone that XSEED isn't going to handle this fully, but it sounds to me like Ignition is taking this seriously, and I'm willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt if they can admit to their past mistakes.

This is quite sad, but I'll still be getting the game unless the translation is so awful that the game is unplayable.
But....Summer 2010....

Bettenhausen made similar promises when they announced Muramasa. Although there weren't any huge mistakes, Entalize paraphrased large sections of dialogue, and for that reason the localization could've been better. Now Ignition has announced that ARF will add English VA but still will be localized entirely overseas. Who knows, it might turn out to be a quality RPG, but right now anything more than an incremental improvement over Muramasa sounds like a longshot.
Also, if Ignition can show that they're serious about localization rather than cranking out a half-hearted effort or worse yet joking about it (http://neogaf.net/forum/showpost.php?p=16283175&postcount=1062), then I'll find less reason to be sarcastic about their company's strategy. I think that's fair.

Did they even translate text-heavy games prior to Lux-Pain? All I can remember are action games like Metal Slug.
And I didn't have any problems with Muramasa's translation, so I'm not really sure where all the hate on that one is coming from. Maybe I just have lower standards.

I played Nostalgia yesterday. The first hour or so is rife with typos and dubious "English" sentences. Totally killed it for me, otherwise it looks like a fine RPG. But I think I spent more time scrutinizing the script for more typos than actually trying to get into the plot.
I mean god damn, there's a menu item that says "Adventuers". To me that's just insulting. There's also a severe lack of apostrophes, as if they were allergic to them or something.

There's also a severe lack of apostrophes, as if they were allergic to them or something.Perhaps they should have stolen some commas from Way of the Samurai 3, where they're inserted into nearly every sentence in places where they make absolutely no sense.

Honestly, as long as I can tell what's going on and the game is fun I don't give half a crap about typos. Of course it's better if there aren't any, but it feels silly to me to let something like typos seriously hinder your enjoyment of a videogame.

Now, we're not talking about voices. Lux-Pain was an unforgivable mess, but so far with games like Muramasa I haven't noticed the handful of mispellings impacting my game at all.
I mean, there were quite a few mispellings in Devil Survivor but I didn't see many people complaining about them.

Muramasa was a really dry translation. Quite a bit was lost in it. Yeah, Devil Survivor had some misspellings, but not on the level that Ignition has failed at.
There's also the non-nonsensical sentences that can be found in Ignition's games. "Seeing such joy is what is to some people,".

I've been talking to the guy who reviewed the game over at RPGFan, and he said he didn't see much of a problem with the translation. He called it a distinct improvement from their previous works. His main problem was that the gameplay was kind of dry, but I'm expecting that, so.

A problem (for me, at least) is that with good acting, you rarely ever sit up and say, "Wow, that's some fantastic voice work there!" because I'm so caught up in the scene. On the other hand, with bad acting it's very easy to notice it.
