Dude when he talks to you the final time before going BP in 1-4 he gives it to you. If he wasn't there to talk to then I hate to say it but something happened in 1-3 that got him killed.

Clearing his story isn't that hard you just have to understand that he MUST be babysat. Every time you visit the level after meeting him (assuming you don't immediately down the boss) you have to beeline for him and kill anything he will pat to if you want to be safe.

i saved him in 1-3 he was in the nexus for a long time...

However every time you visit 1-3 he will respawn there until you kill the penetrator. Did you ever get invaded in body form in 1-3? You know a BP can kill him yeah? Then again so can a blue phantom "ally". Not saying that happened but just throwing out possible scenario's.

Again key thing, did you find him in 1-4 outside of BP form and would he talk to you? If you didn't something went wrong in 1-3, it is a fact.

So, if he dies, and I didn't get to the key in time, I can't get to the mausoleum at all? I accidentally laid the finishing blow on him at 1-3. =(

As long as you took his loot you are fine. He always drops the key on death.

I erm.. didn't. The two red knights who were killing him killed me before I could get it... >.>

must have been the whole 1-3 made it to the 3 red eyes at the end of 1-3 and died did not notice him being attacked again.
