What Sferzar said. A menu where you can choose the emote will pop up.
Alternatively you can hold X while doing a motion with the sixaxis. (correct motions are described in the emote menu)

Is it actually possible to do the two forward thrust emotes using the six axis? I've never gotten them to work, without going through the menu. The rest work fine.

(The Nexus is completely safe, unless you decide to attack some of the NPC's. No Black Phantoms will invade you there.)

finally I found a thread on this that is helpful, I asked a similar question in another thread and was told to use the D-pad, and all that would do is either use items or switch equipment even while holding X I had no idea that it was a motion sensitive thing. I was always wondering how people were doing the emotes so quickly and I had to wait 5-10 seconds for the pop-up menu every time.

The nexus is safe.

HOWEVER! I would highly suggest hitting your Playstation button. I've come back into the room and accidently hit my controller which made me hit an NPC. All the triggers having some form of weapon also makes them amazingly easy to press by accident. Especially if you drop the controller, or kick it, or anything dumb.

If your Playstation button is pressed the worst that happens is you select quit game, or media center or something dumb.

Yeah the adjusted trigger buttons on the PS3 are insanely sensitive just from laying the thing down...it makes watching movies kind of annoying as It randomly fast forwards.

That would be a good reason for being able to sheath your weapon. Did not think of that
