This is probably more of a suggestion for Atlus Japan, than anywhere else but it would have the biggest impact on the US for SMT fans. It would basically be a compilation of the early Megami Tensai titles. I'm sure none of the fans are too concerned about the platform as we'd play them on anything, though I'm sure that the handheld systems would make the most sense -- especially the DS with the SMT ports available on the GBA.

Megami Tensei
Megami Tensei II
Shin Megami Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei II
Shin Megami Tensei If...

This probably would've been better fit on the GBA, but the SMT series didn't really get a strong start in the states until SMT3 was released on the PlayStation 2. But then, I'm sure it was too late to bring it over to strong sales. Now, however might be a good time to look into bringing over the titles that the US missed and re-release a collection for SMT fans on both sides of the globe!

For those that haven't seen much on these games, HardCoreGaming has a great article on the MegaTen series:

My apologies if this has been brought up before, but it's the fact that these titles still aren't available in the US is what makes them so interesting to US fans of Shin Megami Tensai.

I do want to send a HUGE THANK YOU to Atlus for bringing over so many SMT titles to the US over the course of the last few years. Ever since SMT3 many of us have eagerly purchased each game on release day and I'm sure we'll continue to do so!

I am in complete agreement with you, Killrig.

I've been hoping for a port of the original Megami Tensei games of any kind, whether it be on a hand-held, console, or virtual store--such as the Virtual Console, PSN, or Live Arcade.

Seeing as how dozens of cartridge games can be easily fit on even a PSP UMD, a single disc or cartridge could hold the Mega Ten games from the NES and SNES with no problem.

The most difficult part would likely involve translation. There are miles of text in the Mega Ten games, and it would take months to flesh out and translate all of it, not to mention localize the games to a modern American or European, etc. audience.

There are some solid fan-translations of the early Mega Ten games out there, so I'd imagine on official translation wouldn't be horribly difficult. However, I'd like to have a more legal alternative to playing the fan-translated games, and actually support Atlus and the Mega Ten franchise.

I already asked for ports. No use, Atlus USA just localize, they wont develop it.

Two questions:
1) Would localizing the GBA ports of SMT 1 and 2 be plausible at this point in time?
2) Would putting it on PSN be possible? I'm under the impression the publisher/developer do make money off of it considering a recent article about PSN game prices, Sony mentioned something along the lines of the publisher/developers dictate the price of their software. In which case they could localize the PSX ports of SMT 1 and 2.

1) Doubt it, especially since the DSi no longer features a GBA slot. Sure, many of us have the first two editions and one of the three versions of the GBA, but it basically follows that the GBA is dead.

2) Doubt it even more. You're talking about putting a licensed Nintendo game on a competitor's download service. If it ends up anywhere, it'd be on the Virtual Console... and Shin Megami Tensei is already on the Virtual Console and it seems that Atlus USA won't be translating it.

Getting a license from Nintendo to put games on their platforms doesn't prevent Atlus from porting to other platforms, as DarkWizard already mentioned there are PS1 versions of SMT1 and 2. The reason why a PSN release of the PS1 versions won't happnen is because, even if they did end up on JP PSN, their localization would be just as unlikely as the Virtual Console games.

There are ways to play Shin Megami Tensei and Shin Megami Tensei II if you know where to look.

I have a feeling Atlus wouldn't make much money out of that, so I doubt it'll happen.

In the new year I'm going to start keeping track of how many of these exact same threads the Admins have to lock. Should be an interesting statistic.
