I've heard a few people make comparisons to other games. A few of them I didn't know about.
Primarily a game called Enclave. I could find very little about it, only one video, and it did remind me of Demon's Souls. I also read that it's fairly difficult. It doesn't seem to be xbox 360 compatible though and I don't have an original xbox.
That being said, what other games can compare? As for me, I can't think of anything that comes close and I've played a lot of action/RPGs.

It doesn't compare to any game....because no game sucks that much....except for the first sonic to be released on the ps3, in which that game was so awful i threw it against the wall and broke it, i only returned demon's souls.

reb: Please stay on-topic. You're welcome to express your dislike for Demon's Souls in threads specifically about impressions/opinions of the game, but there's no need to come into an unrelated thread to troll.

But you can't invite friends....there is no lobby. Even ninja turtles has lobby even though that game is like 3 years old.

Levanta: There's more than one way to be off-topic.
reb: The game was intentionally designed not to have a lobby. Again, you're welcome to express your preferences in threads about your impressions of the game, or threads about complaints regarding the game, but not in unrelated topics.
Further off-topic remarks in here will be deleted.

I think at its core Demon's Souls fighting system reminds me a lot of the Legend of Zelda games. The fighting system on Demon's Souls is a little more polished, of course.

Well Jorlen, I'm just relaying some info here. But some of my Brandish buddies said they were incredibly excited for Demon's Souls because, well, it reminds them of Brandish (SNES/PC98/PSP/WINDOWS). It has a bunch of traps, you're expected to die over and over, monsters can be frustratingly hard, etc. Hell, even the kingdom's name starts with a B (that's a Brandish trademark). If you want more info just PM me.
Otherwise, of course DS shares a lot with the King's Field series (PS1/PS2). You'd potentially enjoy NIGHTMARE OF DRUAGA as well (PS2).

By similar games do you mean only Action RPGs or basically hard but quality games?
If you like challenges take a look at the Roguelike family of games.
Roguelikes are basically game, with random dungeons, random items, random item identification and when you die, you don't go back to the beginning of the level... No sir, it's back to the start of the game. :)
Basically you have to look at those games like boardgames. Games at which you can lose.
There's one on the Wii published by Atlus called Baroque:

My favorite being: Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (SNES & Nintento DS)
And the classic (apart from Rogue) is Nethack. Comes with spiffy ascii graphics.

To get into the "feel" of roguelikes, I highly recommend this blog:

And especially his entries on Shiren:

The mighty Zom approves of this post.
Seriously, try it out. And don't even dare to diss it because of the exotic control scheme before you even played for a good hour or two.

For me this game is like the Monster Hunter series in a sense that it's not a game that you rush into. Give it time though and lots of patience and you'll reap the rewards. Got my Deluxe edition today from amazon.ca......SWEET! Thank you Atlus!

I highly recommend Enclave - one of the best games out there; it got a bad rap b/c it was indeed quite unforgiving. And now that you mention it, it does remind me of DS quite a bit. Can't really play it nowadays, b/c unfortunately it was only on the XBOX, and it's not one of the backwards compatible games. Ah well.

@Reb: I highly recommend you research your future games so that next time, you know what you're getting into. It's no well kept secret how Demon's Souls works, particularly the multiplayer. With all the information provided to you on the internet about things these days, If you end up buying a game that's not at all how you expected or imagined it to be, it can be the fault of only one person.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be looking into them all!
I'm a huge fan of roguelikes. I've played countless of them over the years, including Nethack on an 8086 when I was a kid. More recent ones I've played are including Shiren the Wanderer, which I really liked. I'm always on the hunt for more roguelikes and wishing they'd make one for the next-gen consoles, although that's highly unlikely to happen. I've seen a few releases that are Japanese only, like many good games, because they wouldn't do well here, apparently. It's a real shame.
And yeah, it's too bad about Enclave. One of the reasons why I personally prefer the PS3 console itself over my 360 is because they bothered to provide 100% emulation (Well, on the older consoles) and that's something I really look for. I didn't want to bother getting an xbox but I may actually consider it now, if not just to play Enclave and Arx Fatalis (both of which don't run on the 360).

Jorlen, I believe Enclave is available for PC as well. I know you can get Arx Fatalis for the PC for $5 on Direct2Drive. These games are obviously old enough that they should run fine on almost any system.

If by NEXT-GEN you meant CURRENT GEN then please don't forget about Atlus USA publishing Shiren 3 early 2010 (http://www.atlus.com/shiren/).
And you really, REALLY sound like the kind of person who'd enjoy Nightmare of Druaga. I was in Ottawa recently and I know for a fact they have it at the EB games downtown, for 9.99$ I think.
