I'm having a hard time deciding which class I'm going to play as when I get home tonight.

You can view some info on them here:
http://www.atlus.com/mediawiki/index.php/Classes

I'm curious to hear from those of you that have already picked a class or already know what they want to play as.

Chime in!

I'll let you know in a little while... need to spend some quality time with the char creator... but I'm probably leaning towards knight or soldier.

*EDIT* I went with knight and it is really fun :)

I've been thinking about this for weeks and finally settled on a Thief. I might as well play the character I'll assume will die a lot.

I thought about that too. The Thief has the highest luck and therefore has the greatest chance of getting good loot. Since you don't loose your inventory or items when you die, this theory seems totally sound.

I picked the Wanderer, and he has been great to me so far. Just beat the first demon boss a while ago.

I'm playing as a Thief, I'm more of a quick manuever kind of person.

I know its supposidly hard to start off as one, but I'm down with such a challange.

Heh, totally didn't even think about that! Awesome. I may die often, but I'll have a lot of swag.

I found that since the Thief is quick, assuming not loaded down, it was easier to start out with than a Knight or Wanderer.

I've read the best choice is Royal. I like the ability to quickly dodge with my Thief.

Wanderer is pretty badass, I think it has the second highest starting luck stat (13), and Thief has (15?). I haven't really seen much of a challenge yet, maybe because I'm used to this type of game. I already beat the first boss on the first try, which apparently people say is one of the hardest.

Apparently, you should stop listening to those people.

First boss is not hard and not one of the hardest.

You pass.

By stating this you just got a place in my "don't show mercy to those already proficient with the game" list.

Also, yeah Wanderer is badass. And no first boss is the 2nd easiest of the bunch IMO.

I've only read that and have not started with a Royal...but IIRC, it was because of the higher magic and miracle stats that you begin with. The Royal also starts at a lower soul level allowing you to manage soul level increases as you want them.

I've played almost all the classes now and today i decided to start as a thief. I find them easy to fight bosses with because of the extra maneuverability, but getting to them is difficult. You will get punished hard for your mistakes (not as much as a barbarian, clearly).

I started 3-1 just now and realized that i gotta work on my bow a little bit. But yea this game is fun as hell.

I would recommend not to play as the Knight since he's a bit slow and open to enemy attacks.

One of the reviews online a while before the game was released here today mentioned something about the fact that this is a game you will start with one character type, play for a bit, and want to go back to create another one, just because your first (or sometimes second or third) choice didn't really "fit."

I'm evidence of this. Began with a thief, was not happy, made a wanderer, and again was not happy. Finally ended up with a Royal, which was a better fit for me. I've got about 40 hours invested in her so far. I like that the Royal begins on level 1, so he or she is basically a tabula rasa for any type of character you wish to create. Plus the MP-recovering ring and very effective spell you begin with does make this the easiest character to begin with.

When I pick up the domestic version on Thursday, I'm probably gonna start with a Royal again, but build her differently.

I highly recommend starting off with the Royalty Class. You start right away with Soul Arrow, and the ranged attacks buy you much needed space. I "only" died twice in my first two hours of playing and that was mostly due to being able to stay away from enemies.

I am currently spending time developing my choices... I've always been a huge fan of the 'tank' style of fighter. Up close, personal, taking damage, dishing out damage.

That doesn't seem to be an option for this game, so I'm having to readjust some of my ideals and I'm leaning towards going through with a Royal, and honestly, a lot of that has to do with this forum and the recommendations.

I picked Hunter and haven't regretted my decision yet. I knew I wanted high luck because I figured I'd need/want lots of loot, but didn't want to sacrifice attack or defense power by being a Thief or Wanderer. Plus, I've always liked Bows. Seems like a perfect fit to me!

I know Dexterity is 15 on Wanderer and 12 on Hunter, and Dexterity affects bows the most, don't recall seeing any other class with a higher dex stat.

If you ask me, looking at what you wanted in a character from what you posted, wanderer would of been your best choice, since it has a higher dex and luck stat than Hunter.

The game has plenty of heavy armor, and giant shields. You'll lose mobility sure, but you'll take a hit far better than my squishy leather armor, and tiny buckler. Honestly, if you want to play that way, I'd be willing to bet it'd work. Just do more blocking, than taking hits. :P

Personally, I picked Thief, and I love it. It wasn't hard to grasp at all, but that's because it fit the exact style of play I wanted from the get go. Agile, with light hitting, but fast weaponry, and the bonus of a bow for pulling enemies away from the group. Taking hits can become dangerous fast, but once you start using your agility, and getting critical hits, be it by parry or backstab, it can be really fun.

How much more often would you say you'd crit as a thief compared to another class? And how damaging is a crit? I'm having flashbacks for dagger crits in L2 where you can drop a guy in two hits.

If the thief can use a bow proficiently too, I think I might ditch the hunter...

I picked the Temple Knight, which is probably the most under rated class of all. He starts off with good range, because of the Halberd, and can use mircales right off the bat. No, he is probably not the best class, but so far I really like the TK's style.

Karkarov
10-07-2009, 06:03 AM
In alot of ways I think Temple Knight is the best. Strong armor, probably one of if not the best starter weapon, the best starter shield, healing spell straight up, and honestly finding a catalyst is crazy easy compared to getting a talisman.

Kamikaze nuker.

Little to no points anywhere, except magic and wisdom. Paper thin, a glass cannon. One hit from any enemy will likely kill me. Since this is a no spoiler section so I can't list what I'll be using, but hint hint 30% HP at all times and every magic enhancing item I can use.

I'll probably get demolished by black phantoms often, but it's going to be so much fun :)

Well the dagger thief starts with gives you a critical damage bonus. Meaning when you backstab, or parry-counter an enemy, it does more damage than normal. I've one shotted an enemy that normally took six or eight strong attacks to bring down, simply by getting a good backstab on him if that gives any idea of exactly how strong that bonus is. In fact, I've never seen an enemy survive a successful critical, yet. =X

They aren't random criticals like in an MMO though, you actually have to position yourself, or time a proper parry to get them. So Thief becomes a very finesse centered origin, especially if you're focusing on the dagger. I had hell with the first blue eyed knight because of this, actually. I simply couldn't get in position for a backstab, and they are annoying to parry since they can be somewhat unpredictable. The second one I knocked down a flight of stairs, and got behind him as he tried to get up. It worked like a charm. XD

I decided to go with a thief as well, i like the fast and agile assassin'esk style that goes along with the class and you get mass loot. But as for the enemies that can survive criticals.

Yeah, I've managed to find a couple now that could survive it. It still wrecks their health, and as an added bonus, it usually knocks them on their face giving you some breathing room(I've seen an exception to this too though, and that was one scary, scary foe in 4-1). I'm trying to find items to upgrade my dagger on the Fatal path though, to further its critical bonus, haha.

When I had gotten the news of the evils that had befallen Boletaria, I was anxious to travel to this troubled land. After a lengthy travel, I finally arrived at my destination. I entered the heavy fog with a heavy sigh of resignation not knowing what was to become of this action.

I had thought the training I had went through in the training camp of my lord's army would be sufficient. Unfortunately, I met my match against the biggest sunnava.... Best not to let those thoughts taint my speech further.

Truly, I had shocked to see I had come back to life... In a fashion. I fought countless foes only to meet the Red-eyed knight who shall forever remain nameless. I dodged, evaded, and outmaneuvered the foe until he ran me through with his wicked spear.

After many matches against this foe, I found myself in the wrong garb. This coat of plate restricts my movements as I try to move. I find comfort sticking my broad sword up my opponent's... unmentionable place.

Only now do I truly realise that I had made the wrong career choice. I shall seek out the most celebrated, most cunning, master of trickery. I shall learn to use guile and stealth to deal death from the shadows. The regime of a soldier is not for me.

Best of luck to all that may travel to Boletaria. Watch carefully the shadows. I may very well await you there ready to disembowel a most unfortunate traveller.

First I played as a Female Royal but I felt that going through the entire 1-1 using Soul Arrow at a safe distance was kinda cheap; then I changed to a male Knight and tried to tank everyone with my "heavy armor" but it was a big mistake, so my Knight mutated into a "long range knight" if you can say so. I soft the enemies with one hard arrow from my Sticky Compund Long Bow+5 and finish every demon standing with my Winged Moon Spear+5 and Purple Flame Shield+8. Oh and I use Talisman of Beasts Just to cast some miracles...
My equipment (I've just finished the first play through) for the most part of the game was black leather chest and Gloom armor gauntlets, helmet and leggings. I played in soul form for the entire game (solo), completed all WT events (black and white), killed every BP and it wasn't that hard to tell the truth. Maneater and the False King were my worthiest opponents.

Knight due to my needs on certain minimum stats.

Does class matter? Beside the starting eq & stat, does selected class have certain bonus?

For example: Does Mage get extra Magic attack point in comparison with a Knight on Same Stats? Does Knight have more melee damage then mage on same str stats?

I like the Knights & Soldiers, they both have good balance on Stats & Start with good armor.

Whats great about the game after you completed 1-1 then you can take your character in any direction & style you want.

No, classes just means "origins." There is no special bonus.

I am as of yet undecided on character class. But I am narrowing the choices through a series of eliminations. Thus far I have eliminated the Priest, the Royal, the Barbarian, and the Temple Knight. The Thief and the Magician are also off limits in this instance.

I shall look to engage in hand to hand combat quite often. Preferably I shall seek out a shield and either a sword or spear combination for the majority of my adventuring. I wish to try axes and halberds, though. I also aim to use blocking and dodge rolls effectively. I am not sure which of the two I will use more often, or perhaps it is a situational choice, so it would be preferable to have both as viable options. I have a feeling I will look to block a tad more often than I shall dodge roll with this character, though, if I was to choose one above the other.

That is the base I am looking for. Anything else can be aquired or learned in time.

All of that leaves me with four classes remaining. The Soldier, the Knight, the Hunter, and the Wanderer. Any suggestions on which class you believe I would find more favorable are welcome.

Thus I don't understand why people are playing according to class style.

My copy arrived first thing this morning. Popped it into the PS3 ready to began more than a few hours of adventuring. Pondering what class I would finally settle on while the game screens were passing by. Then realising that the black and white nature of the game was not a feature of any sort, it was rather that my SDTV cannot handle NTSC!

So I've "played" Demon's Souls for about 10 minutes, getting no further than the character creation screen, which I quit out of in frustration. And I've spent the rest of the day looking at which LCD 32" HDTV to purchase. I've been meaning to get one for the longest time, and this is the straw that finally broke the camels back, so to speak. I could simply get a PAL to NTSC Converter but, enough is enough, it's time to unleash those HD graphics in all their glory.

I know this is not particularly the proper place for this but, I have two choices on the table; a Samsung LE32B450, and a Toshiba Regza 32AV615DB. If anyone has anything to offer on either option, please feel free to drop me a private message. It's an affordable option for now. When I buy a second LCD HDTV it shall be the monster, with the current choice becoming the bedroom option or the like.

I'll get to play Demon's Souls... eventually. :frown:

I refuse to play in black and white! :p

I started with knight on my 2 current characters and wish I would of known about weighing half or less of your equip burden lets you roll around faster. Next character I start will be a temple knight or maybe a thief(I picked knight for the cool looking starter armor). Knight had me pretty set up to learn spells and miracles.

I played a knight the first time since they are pretty balanced so now I'm trying to make a royal since they're easier to mold into whatever I want.

I first chose a Magician, since I wanted to be a pure magic user I thought it was appropriate.
Then I restarted not too far into the game after I learned a bit about it (and thus, how to avoid mistakes I made my first time). I created a Royal because I wanted to start on a blank slate (SL. 0). I'm still playing the Royal now (SL.94) as a pure magic user.

I opted for a Soldier. It seems a good balanced class to begin the game with while acclimitising to all that is Demon's Souls. What direction I evolve him in is another matter altogether. And that is awesome!
