Alright guys. I might take the plunge and buy a 60GB PS3. But I can't justify the HDTV upgrade until sometime mid-2010.

basically should I even bother playing Demon's Souls on a regular 27" TV? I read that I could use PS2 S-video cables on PS3.

I haven't tried playing PS3 games on SDTVs so I cannot answer this question, but if you have a computer monitor with DVI input you could use that instead with the right cable.

All of the televisions in my house are SD, but I have an HD LCD computer monitor. I have my PS3 using my computer monitor's DVI port via an HDMI-to-DVI cable (Philips brand, $30 at Walmart) while using the composite RCA cables that come with the console for stereo audio. Certainly not as large as 27", but it does the job.

Yes you can play all ps3 games on a sdtv. but the wire you need is the regular one. YELLOW WHITE RED. hope that helps

Most games should look ok, but some of them do not alter the fonts and text if run at lower resolutions and non-widescreen. Sacred 2 comes to mind, I remember reading the forums and each day someone would make a new thread about "I can't see any of the text on my TV!".

So, honestly I'd maybe rent it first or do some research. From usually thinks of these things though so you should be ok, but better safe than sorry.

BTW if you do end up needing any cables at all, go to monoprice's website. I order there often, dvi-to hdmi, hdmi switches, dirt cheap. I got a manual hdmi switch and a dvi-to hdmi 6 foot cable for under $20 shipped, for BOTH :)

I wholeheartedly agree with this. An older HDTV I had just died and I was "forced" to use an SDTV whilst my new TV was being ordered. The PS3 will scale down games to 480i/p, and they are playable, but if you can use your computer monitor until you upgrade be sure to go that route.

monopricedotcom is where everyone should get all their cables. Don't buy the cables you see in stores as 99% of the time they are overcharging.

Why? I said I would use S-Video, that's much better than regular composite RCA.

I checked and my laptop doesn't do DVI, just TV out. The deal is I spend little time at home, so my "entertainment system" hasn't quite evolved over the years. I guess I could buy a second monitor (http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=37490&vpn=W2343T-PF&manufacture=LG%20Electronics&promoid=1081) instead of a new TV, but that's beside the point. My question was can I play Demon's Souls on an SDTV and it seems that the answer is YES. Thanks guys.

I've actually had a good experience playing many ps3 games on an sdtv, noted I do have a good one (jvc I'art) and currently using a samsung hdtv, I'd have to say there are definitally benefits of using a sdtv, no lag whatso ever.

I don't mean performance lag, but response time, the most peppy hdtv you can get nowdays still has 2ms response lag, tvs you can purchase now average around 6ms, if your tv is a year or two old, your looking at 8ms.

This problem doesn't even translate to sdtvs on account of the different technology behind the beasts.

I'll probably stick with my hdtv with this game on account of the gorgeous graphics, but I'm sure the sdtv would give me a good advantage looking at the tweak combat system.

Cheers!

I know nothing of text sizes!

Jeff, I think I may be qualified to help you with this question, as I was in the same not too long ago.

When I first got a PS3 the only game I really had was Blazblue and Fat Princess. I was used to playing Blazblue on my monitor and Xbox 360, so this was a considerable step down and not preferable, but still playable. Fat Princess on the other hand was pretty bad. The font in that game is really small so you couldn't see any of the text. I had no idea what was going on half the time.

I only had my PS3 for a week before I said to myself "eff this, I'm just buying a HDTV"

Now granted, my SDTV was pretty ####ty. It was a 20-something inch "Konka" brand - your's, more than likely, is better, but still...

In summary, CAN you play PS3 games on a HDTV? Yes. But will you be thinking to yourself "Jesus, I need an HDTV" the entire time.

Before I got my HDTV my SDTV varied greatly game by game some games such as fallout with the color scheme and green text is near impossible to read once it blurs. If demon souls is dark and has light text that gets blurred with standard def you may have some problems. I felt the problems were personal because before you get spoiled to HD you dont pick up the differences without having comparison. When you try to go back to standard def the graphic blur bugs the heck out of me but thats my 2 cents go with the monitor option if avaible.

haha...I actually end up having a lot more free time on the road compared to when at home with wife/kids.

So, one 80G PS3 at home with the family, and my new slim on the road. Sucky thing is when game saves are copy protected.

I feel like I should create a new thread for this but... RedRocket, should I get a slim or a 60GB? Obviously the 60GB would be used, so there's a risk of failure. It's also 100$ less and I can pretty much score one on craigslist on any given day. But I like the Slim's look, it's not that much more expensive and I'd get my own warranty.

As much as I'd enjoy backward compatibility, I have my PS2 and all. Which I haven't turned on since Devil Summoner 2 (OK, random Raiden III games here and there). I don't care about being able to install Linux, but can I run an FTP server off a slim, or access its HD through a network connection?

For a FTP you clearly need Linux. As for accessing it's HD from a PC... depends - if you need the HDD as a PCHDD, simple answer is no. On the other hand if you only need to access the PS3's system folders like Photos, Movies, Music, etc.. then yes, there are PC tools around to do just that.

RedRocket

^^^ as that is what I would think as well concerning the ftp server. So, remember the slim does not do Linux.

I do not care about my PS2 games. Newer games are for me. The slim works just fine. It's also got the 120g drive and it is said it can stream music now???

My main priority for getting the slim was using it while traveling. I do not check bags on the airplane so I needed something to take up less room and hopefully didn't weigh 20lbs.

Size wise, the slim is like an older laptop. Weight is not too bad with cables and controller, ~ 8-9 lbs. The slim is definitely smaller and lighter then the fat PS3 versions.

sorry for bringing this back from the dead but i cant create new threads and the problem i came here for is sort of relevant

so heres the deal.. i had to import this game because for some incomprehensible reason this will not be released in europe (booooo .. wheres my pitchfork)
now the problem i seem to be having is the game for me is in black and white :S
yes i am playing on a pretty old TV however i have american scart cables and thats always solved the problem for me with american copies of ps2 games.
was hoping anyone would have some idea of what to do, im at a complete loss and would reaaaaally love to play this game. but in black and white its just not worth it

i have in the meantime fixed this problem :$ sorry hehe

as it turns out if you have 2 scart entrances on the back of your tv (and your in europe) E1 supports both NTSC and PAL and e2 only PAL (guess wich i had it plugged into -.-)

thus plug the american scart into e1 and your good to go! full color whoo

I bought an HDTV before I got a ps3 because I knew I'd be getting a PS3 for MGS4...amazingly beautiful.

Another game with terrible text issues is Dead Rising, granted it's for the 360 it still runs in the same resolutions that the ps3 uses.

HDTVs aren't that expensive anymore and the digital switch for tv supports them just fine, even if you don't have HD cable.

I have a SD TV and at the person way at the beginning of the thread that said you need to use the Red White and Yellow cable is wrong, seeing as though many SDTV's have S-Video and/or component RGB hook-ups. And the other bit of info I would like to add is even though I have a SD I set my PS3 to output in 16:9 and DS looks proper this way, if you have it set to 4:3 then everything is stretched. I have noticed that with it set to the 16:9 pretty much every game looks better than if I have it set to 4:3 that the tv is supposed to be.

^ yeah I know, S-Video is the way to go. However nothing stretches at 4:3, dunno what you're talking about.

When I played DS with my PS3 set to 4:3 all of my characters looked "wider" than they should. Maybe it has something to do with me using Component (RGB) cables, but not sure unless those are somehow "tricking" the tv into thinking it's widescreen or something. When I have it set to display 16:9 everything is the way it should be and I can read text, I have noticed the problem the most on Fallout 3 and now that I changed it to the 16:9 setting I can actually read everything on the screen in Fallout 3 where I barely could at all on the 4:3 setting.

I usually play this on a plasma screen but where i'm staying now theres only a really nice 29inch CRT. It's not as good but its still completely playable in SD.

Running on a 480i screen is okay. Details are bad, and it's a little harder to discern detailed threats (especially when dealing with Player Black Phantoms). It's servicable, and doesn't damage the game, provided you haven't gotten used to 720p yet.

TheLastGenius

Actually I haven't encountered any issues on 480i. I've defeated every BP invasion, you just have to "squint" occasionally whereas on the big screen HD its obvious.
