I really hope the game sells well in North America. From Software have been in my top 3 devs for years and years now. I commend Atlus for doing a NA release.
I'm definitely not the only one here who'd love a sequel to this game. I think it will be the happiest day in a long while when I hear the announcement that a sequel is in the works. I know a lot of posters here haven't yet played the first one, but it's already been out since June or July in Asia.
The game has already sold well in Asia and lots of people have imported it. Also, lots of people who've imported it are re-buying the NA version (myself included) - surely this is a rare phenomenon?
What do you guys think are the chances of a sequel?
Anyone here read Japanese? IS there anything on Fromsoftware.jp about it?

From Software are making 3d Dot Heroes atm a sequel hasn't been anounced
I'd rather see a successor than a sequel. A game with a similar play-style, but completely different setting and plot. Then again, that's mostly because I'm a sci-fi junky, not a fantasy lover. =X

I hope for a sequal as well, you really have no idea how disappointing it was to me when I found out King's Field was over and done. Yes there are games like Shadow Tower and Eternal Ring but they were never the same. Different worlds with different stories and feels to them. They never felt like King's Field to me, this game even though I have yet to play it does. If for no other reason I want it to not just be a massive seller but a critical success in the eyes of the gaming community.

That's exactly why I'm against any DLC (especially that land of giants AS)
I'd rather have the team work on an actual game(sequel/successor/whatever) than wasting time and employees on DLC. And then, after the DLC gets released people will just b*tch about the price...(face it, doing a whole Archstone/world will get expensive enough)

My exact thoughts. I'm a huge King's Field fan and it bummed me out to no end when I found out the series was dead. In fact, the only reason I really started looking into Demon's Souls is because it's supposed to be the series' "spiritual successor."

I only stand a PC modded Oblivion, the base game is really lacking in so many things. Anyway, back on topic I'm convinced Demon's Souls will be a commercial success for Atlus and the fols at FROM. Woud you really like to see a DS2 or maybe take all that amazing talent into a similar game with a different theme (like cyber-punk ;D).

There is a sequel. It's called 3D Dot Heroes.
It's like what would happen if Demon's Souls was on the NES, but in 3D.
Enjoy.

Very funny. 3D Dot Heroes looks quite good regardless and I wouldn't be too surprised if Atlus tried to pick it up. As for changing the theme... no please don't. I actually hate "cyber" anything because it is almost always done badly and frankly it doesn't work with the game concept anyway. There is already Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Borderlands, Rage, and a number of other upcoming or currently released open world/action RPG's with sci fi and modern themes. If anything they are what is over saturated these days.

Agreed. If we already had to witness "the death of King's Field", I sure hope that FROM just carries on with their "Dark fantasy RPG" series (apparently that's how they call the games internally). And for that, a medieval theme is best. I have to admit though that I loved Shadow Tower Abyss' theme too, I wouldn't mind seeing something along those lines as a side-project similar to how ST was a side-project to KF.

Only the most obvious styles of sci-fi are over saturated at the moment. Which leaves oddballs like me in the dark as far as themed gaming. I dream of the day I can listen to Abney Park while playing a game, and not feel bizarre due to mixed genres. >.>
I wouldn't complain about a direct sequel, though. I've been waiting for a game like Demon's Souls since PSO died. There's nothing quite like co-op dungeon crawling, regardless of theme.

You know, a lot of people could say the same thing that you said about sci-fi games, towards the theme of medieval times.

3D Dot heroes looks cool and if they have an english version, you can be sure I'll get a copy, but honestly I think their true talents lie in dark themed fantasy RPGs like King's Field and Demon's Souls. I haven't been impressed by art, theme and ambiance in a game for years, Demon's Souls totally blew me away in this regard.
I too only looked into Demon's Souls because it was of a similar style to King's Field. I actually bought my PS3 primarily to play Demon's Souls. Of course I made sure to get an emotion engine PS3 so I can fire up my fav PS2 games, most of them by From Software.
As much as I love the KF series, I think I actually prefer the direction that Demon's Souls took. I don't tire of the combat system, it's a lot more action and fast paced. It's obvious that From has made a huge leap in coding AI as well, one only has to compare the enemies / bosses of DS to KF.
To me, it's as if they've taken the best elements from KF and melded them with something new, which is probably what the director was trying to do. I do miss the 1st person perspective though, to be honest :)
So, yeah, sequel, prequel, and hopes for a King's Field style game (1st person of course), all dreams I know :)
BTW - From released a Shadow Tower game for the PS2 - did it ever see an english translation?

3D Dot heroes is not developed by FromSoft but by Silicon Studio with support from a few guys at FROM; it's the same devs who did that Ninja-puzzle game on the PSP together with FromSoft. Can't remember how it's called - too many Kanji.

No it never made it stateside Sony blocked the port.
As far as these of games and saturation goes... yes there was a time when fantasy was over saturated. But look at your magazine covers and tell me what you see? I see Rage (post apocolyptic sci fi), Halo ODST (sci fi FPS), Batman Arkham Asylum (modern times comic based), Fallout 3 (post apocolyptic sci fi), Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma (modern times fantasy/sci fi), Final Fantasy 13 (future world fantasy/sci fi), Modern Warfare 2 (modern times FPS), and the list goes on... Even most upcoming RPG's feature sci fi or modern settings in addition to fantasy elements. The only exception to this rule is the slew of plain jane average to boring pc games and a slathering of good handheld titles.
There is a RPG coming up sometimes next year Syra that is a post modern setting where everyone uses firearms and has a highly stylized steampunk feel to it. Thats probably the kind of game you want but I can't remember the name.... I tried to find it but I am having no look. I will put more effort into running it down later on.

No, but you should get it - it's called Shadow Tower Abyss and it's an awesome game. I imported it back in 2004 and played it a good 10 times since then lol. Too bad it ends rather abruptly and there's not that much to do in the game. But some stuff is just very well done and there were even features no other PS2 game showed back then, like weapon-collision based dismemberment: you can choose how to cut (Hori L-R/Hori R-L/Vert U-D/Vert D-U) and can cut off limbs accordingly.

What languages are supported? English or French is ok but anything else and I'm lost. I realize that I may not need to read much of the text but in my old age, I don't really have the patience to experiment with a non-translation game :(
What reasons did Sony have for not allowing a port? It's pretty disappointing to know we could have had an english copy but it was stopped due to red tape...

It was japanese only. Also Die By the Sword did the controlled dismemberment/damage thing first. I admit Shadow Tower Abyss did it better though.

Don't remind me - I'm still angry at that story, good thing I forgot the name of the SCEA guy who did not approve the game.
Anyways, basically the graphics weren't up to Sony's standards (funny, a 2003 PS2 game with realtime reflections, shadows and self-shadowing has sucky graphics) and the game wouldn't sell for western audience. Typical stuff we're hearing since the PS1 days from SCEA.
NOTE: Weissvulf is doing a translation patch for the game.

I read an interview with the developers a while back where they said that they've mooted a sequel in the team but have no plans set in stone yet. I'll see if I can dig through my history and find the link...
Interestingly, in that interview they stated they never intended it to be quite as hard as it turned out but they were very pleased with the results, commercially and critically.

I've gathered a list of Demon's Souls 2 feature requests (assuming there will be a sequel), from the GameFAQs/Gamespot message board for Demon's Souls. This is a list of ideas from various people, including myself. I know this forum is not FROM Software's, but it seems like the best place to post. I only gathered the ideas that I thought maintained the core spirit of the game. Nothing too revolutionary, just small refinements.
1. Gameplay music (not just boss/Nexus music). And get a better composer! 90% of the music in this game is pretty terrible.
1a. If no gameplay music, at least let us play music from the XMB.
2. Way to easily play co-op with your friends. (Perhaps players could share the same Nexus)
3. Smarter AI. The AI is a bit too brainless to me. I like enemies who behave somewhat realistically. Not just experience points waiting to be harvested.
4. More ranged/magic attacks from AI. In my first play through, it seemed like 99% of the enemies were melee types, and that most of them had no idea how to react to ranged/magic attacks from the player. It'd be cool if AI was more capable of dodging ranged attacks, and using them as well.
5. Better explanations of stuff in-game (like how upgrades work, etc). I felt like I spent half my time playing the game, and the other half reading GameFAQs and the Demon's Souls wiki for info that should've been in the game itself.
6. Better, more interesting spells! Most of the spells in the game are pretty boring in behavior and in look, IMO. There are four projectile spells that behave almost exactly the same, just with slightly different appearance and damage type. Then there are like 3 different "cloud" spells. Then there are lots of spells that are largely considered useless by the community. :-(
7. Multi-player Phantom invasions! It'd be cool if multiple Black Phantoms could invade at the same time. Perhaps it would only occur if there are already multiple BLUE Phantoms in your world.
8. Allow Black Phantoms to spawn from random areas on the map. It seems like they only spawn at the start of the map (correct me if I'm wrong). It ruins a lot of the surprise for both the Host player and the Black Phantom player.
9. Less of the color brown! Current gen games don't use enough colors. I'm sure the game can maintain it's "dark, gloomy, Gothic" aesthetic with other colors..
10. More random elements to the enemy placement. Right now, enemies always appear at the same ol' spots. Perhaps there could be a handful of enemies per map that patrol around the map on their own accord. It would make each map play through feel a little different every time you play.
11. Formalized trading system between players
12. Ability to run in all directions while locked onto an enemy. Right now you can only run towards an enemy when locked on. If you want to run in any other direction, you have to unlock your camera.
13. Some form of Arena mode so people can PVP
14. Drastically increase arrow/bolt flight speed. According to a Google search, arrows travel around 200 miles per hour. In Demon's Souls.. they move so slow you could probably catch them in mid-air without much effort. :(
15. Allow players to see what item is on the floor BEFORE picking it up.
