A guy on another message board I frequent is having problems with Persona because it won't load for him. He thinks it's because he doesn't update his firmware very often.

He bought it as far as I know, and I am planning to buy it this afternoon, but do I need to update my firmware to the most recent to play it?

I believe it has firmware 5.55, at least that was what the reported firmware was at E3.

5.55 is the firmware version, so lo and behold no PSP with CFW will be able to play it at this moment in time. The highest CFW is 5.50.....

If I'm not mistaken, all PSP UMDs come with the firmware required to run them; it's a simple matter of putting the UMD in and updating from there. This guy on another message board is running CFW, so he'll have to wait (as will you, if you're running CFW).

I have custom FW to play PS1 games on the bus to school.

I buy UMDs and will buy Persona, specifically to support Atlus, but I'm not updating to real FW.

I had CFW but i had to update to official FW to be able to play the game. I dont care that i dont have cfw anymore, i get to play Persona and maybe P3P of it gets ported over here.

I'll be happy to pay full price for the game, but when the proper CFW comes out. The PSP is mine to do with as I want. If I want to play PS1 games on it (which I used to do for plane rides), that's my business and I shouldn't be punished for it.

*shrugs* it's still piracy.

@Nephlabobo,

^Plane rides, bus rides, you are a busy guy. Yes, I can see why you are trying to justify your use of CFW, but then again, you have to understand why companies utilize the firmware updates as well.

Taking games I own and putting them on a different format is not piracy.

Quit being a brainwashed parrot for corporations.

Vaguely, though I think it all honesty it's more about Sony having control rather than concerns about piracy.

I have bought every Atlus game, new, that has been released in NA. I will be happy to continue doing so. But I am not going to have a corporation tell me what I can and can't do with a machine that I paid full price for. It's the same reason why I will never buy an Iphone.

Given the attitudes towards piracy that I've heard around less well-moderated corners of the internet (which basically amount to "lol, why would anybody pay for PSP games?") I can definitely understand why the forced firmware updates exist.

Still kind of frustrating -- I know at least one other person besides myself who put custom firmware on their PSP for the sole purpose of playing the Innocent Sin patch, because PS1 emulation options for Macs are kind of....uh.

The end result is that I now own two PSPs. sob.

Just confirming that I had to "upgrade" to the official firmware as well. Not too big of a deal since I ended up just playing UMDs I bought anyway but still annoying.

Was just thinking the same thing.

Custom firmware may sometimes be used in a non-malicious way, but the fact of the matter is that a large majority of people use these tactics to utilize their systems for less than legal things.

Intelligence is really shining in this thread. I like how we can all try to paint CFW as a black and white issue when there are definitely shades of gray.CFW doesn't make me a pirate nor anyone else. Being a software pirate makes you a pirate.

Curious as to why someone who just rage quit Devil Suvivor over losing to Beldr would even want to pick up Persona for PSP. I mean, you're just going to run into the same frustrations again.

As for CFW - it was your choice to use it and you knew Sony, being the creator of this propriety hardware and UMD medium would be against you using that and find means stymie that.

When you signed up for PSN, for example, you also signed away your "right" to retrofit the device for your purposes. A TOS is, after all, a contract. Break that contract and Sony has every right to gimp your PSP the next time you try to log on or the newest games come out.

So it is actually a black-and-white issue. For every person who just hacks the PSP for a couple "harmless" nifty features, there are are hundreds that use it to pirate games. And its those people that make PSP a hard platform to profit from. Its those people that are making certain studios shut their doors and making people lose jobs.

So while you might not think you're doing any harm or just "backing up" a copy of your game, you're still facilitating the use of firmware that is being abused by others. That means you're in the same boat with them.

I'm going to let Foobar have the final word here, because the initial question of the thread--"what is Persona PSP's required firmware?"--has been asked and answered. The rest is just getting into personal attacks and piracy justifications, two of my favorite things on the Internet! Wait, least. Least favorite things.
