Not looking for do this do that kind of thing, just looking for a few simple survival suggestions.
Reason: I went to youtube looking for a boss fight, the first one I found was
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0F1glN9JjE&feature=related
A quick summary of the video...PC runs to some slime boss, had no idea he needed "firebombs" and basically he is screwed...I just want some tips like don't waste firebombs, don't tell me why, but it seems like there is no way for that guy to beat the slime boss...

Don't waste firebombs at beginning of the game unless you're a magician :P
Don't waste turpentine at the beginning of the game
Don't over-balance with stat distribution or you'll end up being mediocre at everything.
A good way to build a powerful character in this game would be to find a weapon type you're really comfortable with and build your character around it.
DO NOT GRIND TOO MUCH or you'll never learn to be skilled at combat; Remember that BP invaders are human players around your same level range, if you want to defeat them you need skill.
Patience is a virtue
Best tip evar: OVERCONFIDENCE KILLS!!!
Hope that helped a bit (-_^)

Full guide with maps here dude http://mycheats.1up.com/view/section/3169297/26456/demon_s_souls/ps3
Dont know how much more detail you can possibly find. As they said for Phalanx-This demon has very low fire resistance, so use turpentine in your weapon and firebombs. During your first playthrough, it is best to keep a rythm of: shield up, roll, throw firemomb, run in a circle, attack with turpentine weapon.
You will slowly defeat the mini-phalanx sorrounding the real boss. Ignore the items they drop and continue attacking.
Once he is dead, you will get a "You are revived" message, which means you have your body back (hence your full health bar, you can unequip the "cling ring" now). Do not touch the archstone yet. Collect the items.
When you touch the archstone, you will get your first Demon Soul. Do not "consume" it yet. First see the Item section to see what uses the Demon Soul has.
Then you can go back to the Nexus using the archstone, and meet the new characters there:
* Urbain`s Apprentice: He will teach you Miracles
* Freke`s Apprentice: He will teach you Magic
* Maiden in Black: You can use the souls you have collected to level up
* The Monumental: He/She will unlock the other worlds and task you with saving the land.
Excerpt from guide which is constantly updated when a patch comes out or etc etc etc etc

Lol this is what I didn't want, I want to figure out how to beat the bosses on my own, and figure the levels out on my own. My problem is when I get to a part in the game if I didn't keep something(such as fire bombs) I won't be able to progress. I was just wanting to hear hold on to fire bombs and stuff ;) lol I don't want to use the guide untill i have played through 2-3 times and since i pre-ordered Delux I will just use that walkthrough.

Being a noob myself (probably shouldn't even call myself that, I haven't even gotten the game yet) I also would like to see a few non-spoiler tips. For example, I'm curious as to how miracles work. How are they different from magic spells?

The differences are fairly simple. Consider magic spells to be well... magic spells like throwing fireballs, and miracles to be healing, buffs, and utility primarily. Also to cast magic spells you need a catalyst (think wand here) whereas miracles require a Talisman (aka holy symbol). Worthy of note is the existence of a special talisman that can in fact be used to cast both...
The biggest difference though is how they scale. Magic spells get better with increased magic stat (go figure) while miracles are based off faith. Every spell needs a minimum number of memory slots which are gained by raising the two aforementioned stats. I think the most slots you can have is 4 magic and 4 miracle. That's the gist of the basics.

I have a noodie question: What do the female chars look like without any armor on. Also, is fighting in the buff viable? Good for a challenge?
By the way I just saw this smilie and I like it: :lovefirefox:

Fighting naked is viable sure.... as long as you never get hit. Most people will say keep armor light so as to minimize your endurance regen penalty and keep yourself as mobile as possible. Fighting with no armor at all doesn't really offer any big advantage over just using very light armor though from what I know. If you want to try it go with barbarian as a start class, all they get is two clubs and a wood shield I think.
As for what chicks look like with no armor? Can't say I have no clue. I doubt anything racy was allowed though :p

I noticed from watching fan-made videos and reading this forum, that almost no one goes with a magic-heavy character; nearly every character I see or hear about is a heavy melee or ranged character.
So, my question is: How viable is it shoot for a mostly-magic casting character? Is it even possible, or do you just run out of mana too quickly? Or is it just so much harder that most people avoid it?
Also, what about Thief-type characters? Is it possible to go through the whole game using just the thief-type skills?
Thx much!

It is possible to go through the game any way you want. If you only want to use daggers you can do it, if you only want magic you can do it. Just bear in mind the more you limit yourself the harder the game becomes. There are some situations where magic is great and others were you just need a good bow and arrow. Etc etc so on so forth.

I have two quick noobie questions I have been trying to figure out while avoiding spoilers.
1) Are there any stat or item differences between female and male characters? I read on a forum there is a female-only item that increases the number souls from a kill so I am curious about potentially significant differences.
2) If the Luck stat controls how frequently you get drops (right?), is there a recommended Luck value to stop at after which further benefits aren't noticeable?

1. The Silver Bracelet, is a female only wristband. It does increase the amount of souls you get per kill. It can be stacked with the Ring of Avarice, which does the same thing but can be worn by both sexes.
2. The Luck stat ratio increases the more you upgrade it. So no, i'm not sure what the limit might be - obviously, certain rare drops have their own percentage drop rates. So the higher luck, the better the chance (i.e. Pure Blade has a 1 in 200 chance of dropping, so you need some serious luck, or serious grinding to get one).

1) No, there is not a stat difference. The only thing is yes some equipment is female or male only. Like the Dark Silver Set I believe is male only whereas the Beggars set is female only.
2) Not to my knowledge, in fact luck effects more than just drop rates. The Blueblood sword's damage scales with it, it effects your plague resistance, and it also stacks with other stats to form your magic resistance. The Blueblood stops getting good bonuses with luck at about 40 though according to what Zomdizae found so that may be a good reference point in general.

Hey,
Another silly noobie question from someone who has not yet had a chance to try the game... :)
When you die do you lose ALL your souls, or only all the ones collected in that level so far?
Mooglepies

You lose ALL of your current soul balance; that number in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. It won't take away any levels you've bought, items, etc.

that site has all the weapons, I asked the exact same question and everyone told me there are tons of weapons, I said there are only 5 axes and they said thats more than most games, but look at all the weapons, count them up there is actually quite a few plus every weapon can be single hand, single hand + shield, two handed, and some can be dual wielded so there is actually a pretty vast combo

To add to that, almost every weapon has several upgrade forks. So any one sword could end up a number of completely different weapons. It's not necessarily an appearance difference, but it can drastically change the weapon's functionality. So in a sense, there are more weapons than it first appears.

Really? hmm...no one ever explained that to me, they all say if that's all the wiki has that's all there is, so basically there is different variants of each weapon...I'm guessing maybe the wikidot only shows the ones that have different looks.

The wiki only shows the base weapon type, like for example Knight Sword; but with a Knight Sword you could branch to different variants like for example the Dragon Knight Sword - its appearance is the exact same as its base type but the weapon has different stats and has the ability to set foes and wooden objects ablaze.
Similar to the above example there are also poisonous varaints, or magic variants, etc...
There *are* weapons which change appearance after upgrading but that's the special weapons and you need demon's souls to upgrade a base weapon into one of them.

Well, the upgrades are listed within a weapon's page. For example, on the Asian swords page, you have an Uchigatana. If you open the Uchigatana page it will show you the various upgrade paths for the weapon, as well as its base stats. Unfortunately, the upgrade lists aren't complete, but that should give you an idea what to expect with any given weapon.

ah....very good post i hadnt saw all of that....does the moon, crescent, sharp uchigatanas all look the same tho and thats what you guys mean you can mod the stats on them but a uchigatana is a uchigatana reguardless rigth? or do the sub categories change the look a little
They more or less look the same, I believe. Though there is the rare upgrade that changes the weapon to a new one, as mentioned by ZomDizae.

Yes it's a great video, and that's exactly the problem; yes, videos showing how to get the Cling Ring don't prove any harm since it's also a bit more encouraging for first-time players worrying about the HP penalty in soul form... BUT, the other stuff... come on guys, I don't recommend watching too much such videos or you'll kill all exploration aspects of this game, and that's a very big playtime killer right there seeing as Demon's Souls takes it's playtime from slow and cautious exploring.
Of course all the above assumes first few playthroughs only: as soon as you know the game like your own pockets, GO FOR THAT SPEEDRUN, it's hella fun! :D

Yeah I have seen the video linked in other places. I checked it out without playing it and read the guys description. As soon as he started talking about how he was going to step by step tell you how to get every item etc I just closed the page. If you aren't even going to attempt to play the game right don't invest the money in the title because you are missing the entire point of the game.

My first character was a magic-heavy user. Probably still my favorite build, and I've tried 10 of them. Magic nukers in this game work really well, specially when you combine magic enhancing gear (monk hat, ring of magical sharpness, kris knife, clever rat's ring, insanity catalyst) with a high magic stat (notice it continues to scale evenly, no diminishing returns).
And heavy magic users who invest in willpower may as well get a few faith slots and use miracles too (why not? you have tons of mana now). Just remember that if you PVP, most intelligent players will identify you as a mage and most likely cast anti-magic field, so have some tricks up your sleeve :)
Also, I highly recommended having a few decent melee weapons too, stuff that's light on str / dex requirements. In this case, upgrading a sword to dragon+5 - barely any requirements and there are NO bonus stats (addedparams) - instead you get a very decent, albeit static physical/fire damage. Just farm the hell out of 2-2 and you'll have enough fire materials to do it :)
I think I like this game too much. 200 hours now in the Korean version and I can't wait for the North American release. Evil game! Evil!

All good points, but you've missed the obvious choice in a Crescent or Moon weapon (preferably Uchigatana), because you do get added parameters from your lovely high magic stats.
