View Full Version : How to save your save?
I understand it is not possible to backup the save-file of Demon's Souls. But if I ever buy another PS3 how can I get that file?
PS. I do not want to backup my complete old system that I have to restore on a brand new PS3.

Well, the PS3 does use a standard laptop-size hard drive. You could pull it out, copy the data to PC, then put the drive back in the system. Then copy the saved game data to the hard drive on the new PS3.

I'm afraid this won't work; The PS3's HDD has a unique filesystem, it doesn't matter if you're using win or linux, your OS won't be able to read files from your PS3 HDD unless you reformat it with a usable filesystem.

Is this different from what I did? I had used a flashstick and uploaded all my PS3 saves I had on my 60GB PS3, and for a whole year it sat in my Flashstick, then I got the PS3 Slim at long last, and EASILY transferred all my saves into the PS3 :\...........What's the problem with backing up saves I keep hearing? I did it on the PS3, and Wii :/

This is the way I'll go once I get my slim too.
I have an external HDD that is big enough to back-up my current PS3, but I don't want to REFORMAT the external just to hold the PS3 data. (have files I want to keep on the external) A Jump drive seems to be the way to go.
Get an external HDD and back up (copy) what you can on there. If you purchase another PS3 or change the HDD out (like I did recently), you can copy these files from the external HDD to the PS3. There are a few games that will not let you copy files. So far, the only one that I had was Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. If you change the HDD out, it takes about 3 - 5 minutes for the trophies to sync with your online PSN database.

Demon's Souls doesn't let you copy save files.
You should be able to remove the hard drive and insert it into any new machine you get though. I'm not sure if performing a full drive backup saves it either.
Thank you for all the replies.
However I read a lot of different answers. Some even respond to say that the mentioned solution will not work.
Is there anyone who actually did it?
I only know one solution: Make a complete backup of your PS3 and restore that to the new one. But I rather have a more sophisticated solution.

Obviously you never pulled it out. It is in a metal case and the screws are easily stripped. Every computer store I went to did not sell the screws for a laptop hard drive.

You can't do this with Demon's Souls saves - they had to lock them to prevent cheating with trophies. The only way would be to do a full backup, but then the backup would be locked to that specific PS3. It's dumb, I know.

Well, I dislike cheaters, so if this prevents people from having an unrealistic score or ratio or anything on a Leaderboard, orrrrr, people just cheating and being a lame ass in any way. Then I won't mind....just means 1 day of anger, and the next day or when I can play again, that I get to play as a new character and enjoy the beginning and finding things all over again :|

True dat. I played the game for a good 800 hours in total and I can tell you: It's way more fun to quit at, say, Soul level 180-ish and start a new character with a different class/origin.
Also, low-level runs are so much more satisfying in Demon's Souls, it isn't even funny. (-_^)

800 hours in this game? Are you just starting a new save or is it taking you that long to collect everything? I can't imagine putting 800 hours into a game, it would probably take me around 4-5 years to do it... because you know... I have a life.

I can confirm that if you have any games with protected saves the only way to save them is "system backup" which only works for the Sony you backed up. So when your PS3 lays down on ya and you get a new one and restore that backup you get little to nothing from your old system (only regular saves and any non-drm media). I think this is a flaw in the PS3 back-up....how many people are actually going to restore someone elses backup and lose all theyre data for a save? I have to agree tho, if this is what it takes to keep cheaters from ruining my game ill take it. My Phat Boy died on me 2 days before the slim came out and my Killzone 2 save was lost (protected save), thanks goodness for trophie synch...:D

It's the only game I played since the Asian version's release. The game killed my whole vacation and subsequent week-ends. haha
As for the reason of the lengthy playtime; You'd need 4 playthroughs to collect everything which add up to a good 150-200 hours depending on how you handle things, but that's not it;
The gameplay and online is just too damn addictive and if you like the game enough, you'll find yourself automatically doing different builds for invasions and for helping newbies. Also, there's some PvP tournaments hosted by random guys here and there.
However, where I really did put much time in was checking out game-mechanics like WT and online level-range restrictions. I literally spent nights chatting to other players via PSN and trying to figure things out to finally have some numbers on paper... Which was a complete waste since so many things changed back when the 1.02 update was released.
Anyways, I'm taking a looooong break from the game now, but anyways, good times really good times. Last time I played such an addictive game was probably a decade or more ago.
I don't know if that is dedication or if you need a girlfriend....
Call it dedication while taking a break from women. ;)
Nicely put. I'll probably invest a ton of hours into the game as well. I've loved dungeun crawlers since I first played Dragon Warrior for the NES when I was 9. I'm sure I'll play through it once, and create characters just to get the other stuff, like I did in Oblivion, and will do for Dragon Age: Origins as well.
Why is everybody so positive about this? If you ever decide to buy another PS3 your complete Demon's Souls save is lost(!) :very_sad:
For me this is kind of a ridiculous... All of this because of trophies cheaters. Who cares... let them cheat.

IMHO trophies or achievements or how you like to call them shouldn't never been invented in the first place; #### like this wouldn't happen.
And to think that there are seriously individuals this gen who won't buy a game if there's no trophies in it... it's ridiculous.
Give it a rest already. the PS3 is like a a computer, if it crashes you're f####d, and if you change your HDD, then you need to take the appropriate actions. Yes, it sucks that my Call of Juarez did not let me transfer the save, but oh well. Playing through it again. Update your HDD before you buy the game if you're so worried about it.

I bought a console because I am fed up with computergaming. A console should make everything easier so they said.
What actions do you talk about exactly? As far as I know is it simply not possible to copy your Demon's Souls save file to a new PS3.
The appropriate action is to backup your saves. Have you tried backing up the uncopiable stuff on a PSP? That might work since it is licensed by Sony...

I would just like to say that trophies arent the only way to cheat, you cant do anything with the save (ANYTHING) other then what they intended. Anyone who spent anytime time at all with the first KZ on PS2 (online)knows what a nightmare cheating can be. Should be able to use my back-up with a new PS3 though...I was very dissapointed when that didnt work.

The problem is, In Demon's Souls you can still "cheat" for some of the trophies;
Since it's possible to trade items AND equipment while coop-ing, you can just lend a rare weapon from your companion and the game automatically switches the "obtained" flag for that particular weapon. -_-

Woop, Trophies are trophies, they're for just for boasting, but nothing Directly that effects the game, or that players' skill, if they boast that they have all the trophies, let them, if they can't back it up with a high level character or with actual Skill in the game. Woop. Not like trophies award them with unique stats or weaponry.

I did not try this. But what I understand it will not work either, because the save-file has got a unique code/id or something that makes it only possible to back-up iy on the same PS3.
That means if you ever buy another PS3 you're are never gonna get them back. Bye bye to all your upgrades and you have to start all over.
Seriously I still do not understand why they make it like this. The disadvantage is so much bigger than the advantage imo.
I had a PSX, Dreamcast and Cube before and it was always possible to save your files. But this particular "modern" game on a particular "modern" console does not allow to save your file.:question::question:

The game automatically saves after every action you do, like, slaying a foe, picking up an item, dying...
See that little "moon" icon on the top right of the screen popping up occasionally? That's to show you that the game is saving the game.

Sorry about the misleading comment. I was just going by what I had heard...I haven't played it yet. So...when you die, you still get sent back to the beginning of the level? Also...do you keep all your points you've made to level up? So when you go back through you'll be stronger?

Also...do you keep all your points you've made to level up? So when you go back through you'll be stronger? Your level does not change when you die but you will lose all unspent souls which are left at a bloodstain where you died. If you can return to that bloodstain without dieing, you can get those souls back. If you die before returning to your bloodstain, those souls are gone.
FYI, you can save/quit the game mid-level without resetting enemies on that level. So when you go back to play DS, you start where you left off with everything intact and the level enemies not reset.
