Reference/Cameo?

Is this a reference/cameo, or does this telephone booth have a purpose later in the game?

As for what I think it may be a reference to, it may be a reference to the TARDIS of Doctor Who fame.

(In short for those who don't know, its a time/space traveling phone box.)

The Phone box is on an isolated island, in the south western end of the games map.

Its highly doubtful, but I thought I'd ask.

It has some signifigance as you make your way toward the end of the game, but I don't want to spoiler anything. What I will say is its not what you think, but part of what you're thinking is within the scope of the story.
