I got my copy yesterday and I'm only a little while into it, but was anyone else struck by the uncanny likeness to The World Ends With You?

1. Tokyo coming to an end/having to travel the various districts?

2. The constant ticking clock consideration?

3. Even the main character's always got headphones, just like in TWEWY.

I feel more of an uncanny likeness to Shin Megami Tensei and Persona than The World Ends with You. Shin Megami Tensei did the whole lockdown of Tokyo way back in the original on the SNES, and Persona did the whole "hip present day teenagers in Japan" thing before TWEWY as well.

The only real similarity is the whole 7 day thing, but even that is different, and Persona 3 also did the whole time based progression first.

While this is uncanny, that's where the likenesses end.

Agreed, but it does give the game a certain....familiar vibe. The graphic design also uses a less grim limited tone palette a much more colorful, vibrant presentation, ahem, just like TWEWY.

I don't want to make too much of it since the games play very differently, but its something that struck me right away and did put me in a slightly different mindset than most SMT games usually put me.

1. Tokyo coming to an end/having to travel the various districts?
Shibuya is NOT coming to an end in TWEWY. As for the various districts, in TWEWY you remain in Shibuya.

2. The constant ticking clock consideration?
Both games use this differentially. In TWEWY, it's better the more days they live, in DS, it gets worse and worse.

3. Even the main character's always got headphones, just like in TWEWY.
In TWEWY this is a story element; in DS this is just a design choice, as far as I can tell.

There are some aspects similar to TWEWY. Still, we cant say DS copy TWEWY, the oposite would be more likely.

Teenagers in Tokyo figting monsters. There are many games about that (Persona).

Hey...Yeah...TWEWY's been in development since the DS was revealed to developers, plus it's been out in Japan for two years, whereas Devil Survivor likely had a much smaller and later time frame of development.

Well, they're both on DS, ergo,

1. Tokyo coming to an end/having to travel the various districts?
Shibuya is NOT coming to an end in TWEWY. As for the various districts, in TWEWY you remain in Shibuya. More like The world ends regardless of you. In TWEWY, in theory if it weren't for neku, the Shibuya would have actually survived.

2. The constant ticking clock consideration?
Both games use this differentially. In TWEWY, it's better the more days they live, in DS, it gets worse and worse. Yes, Twewy listed time limits, but in reality, you could take all the time in the world, outside of some fights, nothing is actually timed.

3. Even the main character's always got headphones, just like in TWEWY.
In TWEWY this is a story element; in DS this is just a design choice, as far as I can tell. Coincidence at most.

SMT: Nine intrestingly has an evil force known as "noise" putting things into a virtual MMO-like Tokyo. In TWEWY, characters are pulled into a "game" to battle "noise."

People in SMT:Nine are cut off from the outside world because of nuclear holocaust. People in Devil Survivor are cut off from other parts of Tokyo and the outside world because of a demon invasion. Demon invasions tend to happen here and there in the SMT franchise and its spin offs.

I'm calling chicken and egg on this one. Its not like SMT games havn't drawn on the ideas of other SMT games before.

i dont know what you think but to me this game was really like the SMt IMAGINE, dont know if you have played it but its an awesome game, just that in DS you cant wield weapons

Don't forget how we have a mute protagonist in Devil Survivor, but a very noisy (yet Hikikomori) protagonist in TWEWY.

What.

I think the above poster is trying to say that TWEWY is copying the SMT series in general, while DS is just Atlus doing what they always do.

I also agree that TWEWY was more Square copying SMT than Devil Survivor copying TWEWY.

Although TWEWY is (one of?) my favorite Square game so, you know, Square wants to rip off SMT, more power to them.

The headphones thing MAY be related. I'm just thinking that putting headphones on characters tries to make them more independent than the rest of the people they're with. Death clock in DS and timer for the missions in TWEWY aren't really related if you ask me. DS's death clock tells you how many days you have left to live. Whereas TWEWY's timer tells you how long you have to complete the mission. Also and again, TWEWY takes place in shibuya only. DS goes and visits many districts. In my overall opinion, I say DS's story is way more deep and interesting than TWEWY...even though we're not talking about which one is best....lol.

I don't think anyone that's played Nocturne could really be confused about where the story comes from in this game. It's certainly a different take on the story, but the basic story is close enough to give it a lot of the feel of the main SMT series, while still bringing its own ideas to the table. It uses anime-style artwork and takes place in Tokyo, it's only really amazing that there aren't 2 million DS games that share that in common.

This game's plot much closer resembles the first 2 SMT's (especially SMT1) than it does Nocturne.

The game is very similar to SMT 1. If you play 1 and Imagine tons of plot stuff become easily recognisable. In SMT 1 angels nuke the world and lockdown happens there too...

Lockdowns recur throught the series

SMT 1
The city in SMT 2 isolates itself from the outside world.
SMT 3 Tokyo is the center of the conception, the rest of the world is distorted around it.
SMT Nine people isolate themselves underground, living lives in a virtual Tokyo.
Digital Devil Saga has a similar theme.
Persona 3's "The Answer" you... get cut off from the world outside your dorm.

Demons invading the world:

Pretty much any SMT game.

World will end/you'll die in set amount of in-game days:

Persona games.
Zelda: Majora's Mask
Many, many more

Using computers to summon demons:

SMT
SMT2
Both MTs
Soul Hackers

The themes come and go, but SMT was doing them forwards and backwards before SE came out with TWEWY.

I immediately noticed the similarities this game has with TWEWY, but I noticed this game kills it on overall fun factor, storyline, and straight addictiveness. By the last day in TWEWY I couldn't careless what would've happened and this game I wanted a whole month, not just a week.

TWEWY was a lot more addicting to me. Maybe that's just because I find A-RPGS a lot more addictive because of their fast-paced nature.

Fair enough fair enough. I do gotta say, minus the JPOP, the soundtrack was more my taste in TWEYT. I'm a sucker for anything trip/hop electronica in an rpg game. I also enjoyed the battle system for both games. I was hoping for the dialog to be a bit darker in TWEYT figuring it had a great concept and set up. Coming from a kid who grew up on squaresoft- it's by far their release in a long time tho.. Infinite Undiscovery anyone? hahah

I'm a sucker for BG music with lyrics, lol.
And I hope you're not bashing IU. ;[

I agree: I don't know who copied who, or if one copied the other at all, but there are definitely similarities in the premise and general atmosphere of both games. However, I also found that, after playine TWEWY for a week, that I couldn't care less for the characters or story, and that after playing DS for two weeks I'm completely hooked! I can't put my finger exactly on what draws me in more to this game... The demon auction and fusion systems? The darker atmosphere and story? The turn-based gameplay? All of the above? That must be it... It's just a really good combination of gameplay elements!

I thought there were more similarities between Devil Survivor and Valkyrie Profile: CotP. At least gameplay-wise anyway.
