Hey all,
I'm new to the PSP scene but I know that newer UMDs require newer Firmware to work. I looking to buy an older model used PSP specifically for homebrew purposes (I'm more interested in homebrew than UMD games anyway) and I want to keep the firmware as old as possible; will Persona most likely require the latest official Firmware version? Just out of curiosity, what does Class of Heroes require?

Look up version.txt . I probably can't explain much here, but it'll help you bypass this type of stuff.

Most games should have the version of the firmware they need on the disc. For Persona though I doubt it'd be the latest, unless Atlus USA used a newer version.

Well, you can play it on Custom Firmware, I'd assume, and you need CFW to homebrew, so....
But yeah, we shouldn't be discussing that.
Well, since the firmware that runs Homebrew games is 1.5 and most games tend to stay with the current firmware...
Anywho, CFW will allow you to play the games. I don't think its illegal to run it as long as your not pirating games anyways.
If nothing else buy 2 PSPs, :D

Actually, according to this link:http://www.siliconera.com/2009/08/07/looks-like-sony-is-going-to-roll-out-psp-firmware-555-soon/
it seems you're going to need 5.55.

This news caused me to cancel my preorder. I realize that this isn't Atlus' call, and I certainly understand Sony's desire to squash piracy, but I am not willing to "upgrade" my firmware to play this game (especially since I already own the Playstation version).

uhhhh, dude, you'd have to upgrade your firmware for any game. They've been doing this since day one.

I am aware of this, and indicated that I do not blame Atlus for the turn of events. Nevertheless, it caused me to cancel my preorder for reasons I probably shouldn't discuss on the board (I don't think it's anything illegal, and I certainly don't support piracy).

There are firmware updates that do the same thing as official Sony updates, so if you need the most recent PSP update to play the PSN version of FF7 theres a non sony firmware update to do it

So you're blaming Sony for your own mistake of ordering a game that won't work? Classy.
Turn of events? Again, going on since the PSP was released in March 2005 (4 and a half years ago, chief).
And dude, seriously, piracy IS THE ONLY reason to have custom firmware.
(EDIT: Except for video capturing, I'll admit that's pretty appealing)

I'm confused about why you're being so confrontational about this. I'm not trying to assign blame; rather, I am expressing sadness that I must choose between two things I want. If, however, I were to assign blame, it would rest squarely on the shoulders of software pirates.
I have been a consumer of Atlus products for many years, and I thought this would be an appropriate place to express some regret at being unable to support them by purchasing this product (which I've been anticipating for some time). I am pretty sure I'm not the only person in this situation. Apologies if this is somehow offensive or comes off as being whiny.

No~
That sucks, but since I have a slim and a special battery, I guess I can just temporarily "upgrade" to 5.55 to play Persona.

Wait, what? Did you seriously just say that? That's a pretty ignorant statement. I have CFW, but I certainly don't pirate with it. There are things like plugins, homebrew games, improved versions of Sony apps (including an internet browser that uses the Slims full RAM), and many more reasons I have CFW. None of them include piracy.
