Well this game is turning out to be better than I expected... so many games coming out near the end of this month, I shouldn't buy this because I know it will probably be years before I get aroudn to playing it, but I think I will anyway.

This is my First Shin Megami Tensei game I've played and I have to say, WOW. This is my new favorite DS game and I've only started an hour ago!
(My old favorite was Super Robot Taisen OG: Saga endless frontier)
I love the art, I love the dialogue and I LOVE Naoya.
He's just... so cool!

Its SMT at its core, but there are a few things I don't like about this one. I can live with this aspects, but I just expect more and better these days:
- Soundtrack just gets repetitive really fast. Faster than it should. Meguro is missed here
- 2D battle spirtes are too much of a throwback, even DQ series has moved beyond this
- Can't see my characters in battle, again a throwback & other games moved beyond it
- Yuzu is too much of a girly girl, not really the strong female protagonist SMT games usually offer. I've not really seen much of Haru and the others yet, though, but Yuzu is a pretty weak character so far
- The character art, in general, is weak. I know its all the rage to make characters in a DS game super-anime style, it just doesn't work here. Something more in the vien of Persona or Knights in the Nightmare would have worked better while retaining an anime-style look. DS's art just lacks any sophistication.
The "COMP" interface is nice and the story is compelling so far and the combat system is strong as ever. I already like Gin, its always nice go have some more grown-up characters here and there. I do like the music I've heard when it doesn't loop within thirty seconds.
I actually like how the battle system works out. More of a squad-based SRPG that encourages you to wipe out all enemies rather than just the leader. Nice that you can just remove the leader in a pinch, though.
I like the eBay-style demon auctioning, its a cute twist on obtaining contracts.
Fusion seems almost too customizable, though. I think Devil Summoner 2 was generious enough without risking homoginizing all your demons, Devil Survivor's system will take a bit more self control to keep demons balanced.
All and all I'm still having fun with Devil Survivor, the cons to me are really just minor irks I have and haven't ruined my enjoyment of what I've played so far. Hopefully any future DS efforts will see refinements in the art and combat animation departments.

Yes, this. The battle song was cool at first, but it's getting old REALLY fast.

At first I didn't think I was going to like how the battles are set up since you have to be pretty close to members of your team to heal them and such but it's not bad. I'm just bummed that the snowman mentioned that wants to kill you didn't turn out to be Jack Frost but that just means he'll show up later; it's not a MegaTen game without him.
- Yuzu is too much of a girly girl, not really the strong female protagonist SMT games usually offer. I've not really seen much of Haru and the others yet, though, but Yuzu is a pretty weak character so far
I've actually been pretty irritated with the females in SMT games lately but, granted, I'm picky. Devil Summoner 2 had me fuming, however, and made me lose all respect for Tae. She's given a very nice feminist speech and throws it out the window by thanking you for helping her with a hot springs scene.

I like Meguro, but he's just as capable of repetitive soundtracks. Have you heard Persona PSP's battle theme? It loops like every 20-30 seconds, and since it's got a lot of vocals it gets very noticeable and repetitive quickly. Plus it's nice to hear someone other than Meguro every once in awhile.
As for the sprites, what do you think would be better? 3D usually looks awful on the DS, 2D almost always looks much better.

Yeah, i rather see a nice 2d than a so so 3d. 2D games looks more mature in DS than 3Dīs. Im glad they use sprites.
Im waiting for IGN review still i already bought the game and is already on of mt TOP 3 games for the system.

I know you weren't talking to me or anything, but I think the 2D sprites could have been a bit better. It's not like I don't like them; 3D sprites in a DS SRPG would be really bad IMO, but I think they could use some work.

they aren't that bad, are they? at least from what I saw from preview images those are fine xD
that review of the club nintendo magazine kind of saddened me, because if usually the Atlus games have not the best distribution or long prints in the United States (or at least I have read that), imagine in the rest of the continent. the main reason I was left wanting to play Persona 3 FES and the reason I turned to mercadolibre (think of it as the latin american version of eBay) to buy Persona 4, is because it was impossible to find them in any store I asked. maybe it is only related to the MegaTen games, because I found other Atlus games, but none of them of that saga... I guess it's time to make a retail hunt (and to buy a Ds at that, if only to play this and knights in the nightmare :D)

I love how the protagonist is a lot more "talkative" this time around.
This game is great, but I also wish we could've seen our characters during battle. I want to see demons vs. humans! Not demons vs. status boxes!

I just think they could have done a bit more animation with the battle sprites, rather than just straight-up use Kaneko's old art that I've seen a dozen times.
Its still nice art, I just would have preferred something 3D or some animation to the sprites used in battle. Some sense of movement.

One thing I'm really missing is the Compendium. I mean, I understand why it isn't there, but I really miss the little info blurbs about the demons that were in there. Especially given that this game bring to the table a lot of new and -very old- demons that haven't been in the US games yet, so there would be a lot of new and interesting bios to read.

But the game is Awesome, I love the story each character have their on problems and all have to survive, I don't think this is a bad "Megaten"
PD: I maybe the only one who like Nagi as female character in DS2 D:

The game is very good, yes i would have liked that there would be some animation but it is good anyway, and the soundtrack is ery repetitive but in a way that you just keep playing, btw i really liked the credits song it is cool and sounds better without the voice =D

Seems like the associated press did a short piece on Devil Survivor a few days ago...
The hilarious part is that I found out about it while looking for the latest hockey news...

You're going to love the rest of the female characters. Amane, Haru, Mari...Haru during her route on the last day gave me complete and utter goosebumps, she was that kickass. Izuna turns out to be one of the best physical attackers in the game. Amane outclasses Yuzu in magic, and she's awesome to boot. I can go on and on and on.
And I disagree with 3D. The only way to do 3D on the DS is to make everyone super-deformed. Hell, I can't play FFVII on the PS1, because I can't take anyone seriously when they look like Chibitalia characters. It was hard enough for me to take the melodramatic plot of FFIV on the DS seriously, it would've been even harder for me to take the dark and rather depressing plot of Devil Survivor seriously if they looked like they belonged in a kids' anime.
