Should I get the one on Virtual Console or the DS remake?

Different Graphics (I prefer DS)
"Slash" Mechanic is present in the DS version
I may be getting the versions wrong, but doesn't the Turbographix version have you retain your level in II?

I played both versions of the game.. the DS version is vastly superior.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with the two of you.
Turbografx has infinitely superior graphics, over the garish 3-D backgrounds the DS version contains, although they are decidely more retro. Although if you're willing to play a Virtual Console game, you probably don't mind retro graphics.
Soundtrack for the Turbografx version is probably the best arrangements of the Ys I & II OST, only challenged by the recently released Chronicles edition.
The only way to use the proper, and traditional Ys I & II (and IV... and IV) combat system is with the stylus which controls extremely poorly, and often blocks what is on screen. Speaking of poor control, Turbografx version has the opposite. Yes, it has rather amazing control, calling for extremely precise attack positions, and daring boss battles. Perfecto~
As you can see, I'd recommend the Turbografx version.

I agree with the whole of this comment. I have the original for my Turboduo... and I agree about the graphics and sound been a better fit on the Grafx system than on the DS. Perhaps because when it first came out it blew away everything else at that time, circa 1988~
But in reality the original poster should ask whether he wants to enjoy this gem on the go, or at home. That should be your deciding factor. Since not many of us will be able to get their hands on the original game having it available on present day consoles is a gift indeed.
Happy trek in the world of Ys.

An additional point I'd like to add is that the Legacy of Ys: Books 1 & 2 for DS has the revised extended story, translated by Atlus just for you (with love). This story was created for the Ys Eternal project, and is a lot more detailed and textured than the Turbografx story. ;)

I always wanted to get the TurboGrafx version (and for that matter, the CD drive!)
Ya know, speaking of that CD drive, I always wondered/wished something:
A. Since they had the TurboExpress, which was a portable that played the actual TG-16 games,
-and-
B. The TurboGrafx CD drive could be used as a portable CD Player (music CDs only,)
WHY OH WHY couldn't they let you hook the two of them together?? It would have been awesome to be able to play CD games on the go! OK, maybe you wouldn't want to do it while actually moving around, but still...

I couldn't justify buying the DS version because of the terrible rendition of the soundtrack, personally. The DS version's graphics are... acceptable, and the added touches would be fun to spot, but I'm spoiled on the Turbo version; the soundtrack was one of the high points of the package. I love Ys, and I love Atlus for bringing it to us with its customary care, but a game's music is too much a part of its experience for me. Couldn't do it.
It doesn't help that I'm always late to the party whenever Atlus releases something cool anyway, and they often don't get that out of the gate support I feel they deserve, but that's beside the point in this case.

Theres something I have been wondering about
Atlus USA says they dont develop games
Ys and Ys II on the DS were released on separate cartridges in Japan and Atlus USA released both of them together on one cartridge

The game's developers (Interchannel) probably did it, not Atlus themselves. Besides, someone has to put the translated text it. There's always a developer somewhere in the chain.

Nothing is Perfect but its cool having a port of Ys Eternal and Ys II Eternal on a handheld

This may be a dying a thread, but to my knowledge there are drastic gameplay changes from the TurboGrafx to the DS. If you're a diehard Ys fan, your best bet would be to download the Virtual Console release.
If you can't "bump" your enemies to death, it's not Ys I and II.
On a side note: try Ys VII for the PSP; it's an awesome game!

I've played the original Y's, but never finished it. I vastly prefer the newer DS style of game play compared to the original. The original was just kind of awkward.
