No Country For Old Men.
Awesome movie. I had read that the Coen Brothers lost it, what with Intolerable Cruelty, The Lady Killers, etc., and if that's true, they've definitely gotten it back with this one. They are truly excellent filmmakers.
Everyone was great in it, but Javier Bardem stole the show. His portrayal of Anton Chigurh was amazing. Everytime he walked on screen, I could not take my eyes off of him for even a second.

Usually there's a feeling of "I might like this" or "I probably won't like this", but with Twin Peaks I was completely neutral. I rented it on a whim, so there was no hint of either feeling.
I must admit, though, that although I like the writing and the scenario in general I am not a huge fan of the acting. The lack of the pilot episode did kind of confuse me as I initially thought I picked the second episode instead of the first (the cursor was hardly visible on my TV), but I also thought it was neat to have a small recap in the beginning of the first episode anyway.

The only thing I can get out of NoTD is Night of the Living Dead, which was inspired by I Am Legend...

Yep I meant Night of the Living Dead its considered an allegorical adaptation. Matheson has said it was karma that George didn't get the rights to the film in the first place(not verbatim) ... I am not a big fan of Sci-fi's anime block. They censor pretty much all foul language with bleeps, and block images of bare breasts and g - strings with large opaque circles. I find both practices to be pretty annoying when I am trying to get into a show.

Despite being unfaithful to the book, this is one of the better movies I have seen recently put out by Hollywood, especially with the current slump. Will Smith's acting performance in this was the best I have ever seen of him, as well as one of the best performances given by any actor I have seen ever (mind you, one of the best, not THE best). If the movie was horrible, his perforance could have made the movie bearable, but luckily, the movie also happened to be pretty good.

Yeah, there is something about it... it's infamous for being one of the goriest horror films of all time for some reason, but when you actually watch it, you'll notice that there isn't really that much blood, or onscreen violence, at all. And I doubt that it's because even that level of gore hadn't been seen before. I mean, it was the freaking 70's. Last House on the Left was a lot more visually disturbing and it came out 2 years prior to TCM.
Anyway, mark of a great movie imo.

The Orphanage - Pretty good movie from Spain about a haunted orphange. Nothing really scary, though I don't think it was meant to be. Everything worked and made sense. Sack mask kid was cool looking. Recommended.
I Am Legend - Decent enough. Kept my attention the whole way through, though there are a few issues that keep it from being great: horrible ending, bad CG(why not use real people?), important plot elements left out from the book, too short, a little bit of that Will Smith corniness that was out of place, etc.
Tried to see There Will Be Blood, but all the showings were sold out, so I opted for the IMAX version of I Am Legend

Not a bad movie, better than the last one. All I have to say is that anybody in that movie was fair game, regardless of age. Baby aliens bursting out of a 13 year old kid. Pred-Alien overlooking an infancy ward full of helpless babies (you didn't see him eat them, but you so knew he did  ) Laying eggs in pregneant women...

Alien Vs. Predator Requiem, saw it on Christmas. Small spoilers for those who wanted to see it:
Not a bad movie, better than the last one. All I have to say is that anybody in that movie was fair game, regardless of age. Baby aliens bursting out of a 13 year old kid. Pred-Alien overlooking an infancy ward full of helpless babies (you didn't see him eat them, but you so knew he did  ) Laying eggs in pregneant women...
Characters were pretty bad, reminded me of the Freddy Vs. Jason cast.
I saw a knockoff of AVP at block buster today: AVH (Alien vs Hunter), made me think of the knockoff of Transformers (Transmorphers).
Anyways I rented:
Blood Rayne (aweful movie, glad I got it for free).
Resident Evil: Extinction (I'll be watching that after I finish doing laundry).

I LOVE IT. But it's not for everyone. Fox Searchlight is sort of marketing it in the same light as Little Miss Sunshine, and they are not far off. A sort of macabre dark humour movie with stellar acting and a script from a first-time writer. I really hate comparing it to Little Miss Sunshine, but really, if you like LMS, you'll like Juno. It's intellegent, but it takes itself a bit too seriously sometimes, and you can tell that Fox Searchlight edited the script at certian points in the movie, and this incoherence of writing stands out like a tellitubby; this aspect is extremely unacceptable I still can't get over how well Ellen Page did in this movie. It almost puts her performance in Hard Candy to shame. Almost.

I agree with you on how people do reviews, seems they all try to find the quick and easy way (and more times incorrect) to describe a movie.. I liked it for what it was. Not often do I go to a movie where at the end, everybody is dead silent. Almost as if people where still trying to proses what they just seen.
Unfortunately the GF didn't like it quite as much.. But then again she's not a fan of the monster movie genera. She thinks watching "Godzilla: King of Monsters" is a form of torture.

Just saw Cloverfield. Awesome movie. Lived up to the hype Al and I set for it over the past 6 months. Al, what movie was it that showed the first trailer? I can't remember.
Also, not to be argumentative, but the Godzilla/Blair Witch assertion is entirely accurate, thought the movie is, in a way, different. You have a giant monster running around, Godzilla. You have the film being displayed on a handicam that was supposed to be found after the events they depict took place, Blair Witch. The main difference from Blair Witch is that Cloverfield isn't trying to trick you into thinking these were actual events.
The United States officially makes the best giant monster movies.
Why don't we have a video game about a giant monster attacking our civilization? PS3, pls. Western dev, pls. NOT based on Cloverfield, pls.
Al, is it just me, or did Hud calling, "Rob! Rooob! ROB!" constantly, remind you of, "Walt! WALT! WAAAAAAAAAALT!!!"
Also, this movie has two of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Like, Hayden P beautiful.
Oh, and everytime I saw Cloverfield, I couldn't help but think about SotC.
Can't wait for the BD with extra footage. I have to see more of this ####ing beast.
I'm totally buying Lost S3 for $120 just to support this totally ####ing awesome production company.

Ok so I saw Cloverfield and LOVED it. Totally exceeded my expectations. I've had a high standard for movies latley, due to the recent trash, and Cloverfield was beyond that standard. I don't really have much to say about it. It was just great.
In my local paper's review, the guy said he was confused as to how they could film, or how the film could survive, or something because in the opening gov't descriptions there was something that contraditcted the existance of the tape. I didn't get this contradiction. Did anyone?
Also, I'm very much confused by the choice to have Giachino write a 6 minute overture for the ending credits. What perturbed me most was that it worked REALLY WELL. In all context, the music should be out of place, but it works perfectly, as if it's supposed to accompany you as you take in what just happened. Well done, Abrams, on the choice.
Can't wait for Lost4.
Raithgar
01-21-2008, 10:05 PM
The only thing that can come to mind about any contradictions during the beginning of Cloverfield, and this may be a stretch..
Since the tape was originally created to inform people of what exactly happened that day, Yet it seems that the government was limiting or suppressing access to the footage (authorized access, restrictions on duplication).
like a said.. it may be a long shot.
Sayckeone
01-22-2008, 05:25 AM
There were no contradictions. All that the government's description said was that the video was found in Central Park, and it was.
There's nothing showing evidence of any restrictions on the footage, though it's safe to assume that it's generally for government viewing only, and that what we're watching is leaked and classified.

I ended up watching "Mr. Brooks" and "Resident Evil: Extinction" recently.
I actually really enjoyed Mr. Brooks. I'm normally not a huge fan of those types of movies, but I ended up watching almost all of it (we were playing Samurai Warriors 2: Empires while watching movies). I wish they would have left the last two or so minutes out of the movie, so that the scene before it could have taken effect, but aside from that I had no problems with the movie whatsoever. Good acting, although I didn't care for Demi Moore's character. Whether it was just because of the way the character was supposed to be like, or Moore's acting, I just didn't like her.
On the other hand, Extinction was crap. Spent most of the time playing SW:2, especially whenever Alice used any of her telekinetic powers. Having an overpowered killing machine in anything RE related kills the entire mood of it. That was my biggest problem with RE4. It was a great game, but not really a "survival" game.

Which parts do you think were edited? I read that the script was mostly unchanged from the first draft.
Overall, I liked it for the dialogue and acting but not the characterizations. The characters appeased to mass media's gross generalization of how all pregnant teens and adoptive parents would act (i.e., the boy always wants the girl to get an abortion, the adoptive mom is obsessed, and the adoptive dad is a flake). Not very original from that standpoint.
Sayckeone

I wouldnt want a cloverfeild sequel. I like how it was just exactly what it was, not explanations and just from the veiwpoint.
I didnt really like how we were so focused on Rob and his drama and no one else had any emotional time besides him. We see him upset on the phone talking about his brothers death to his mother, and you dont see anyone else say or show any kind of worry towards any of there own family. I understand he was the main character, but at least give everyone some believability instead of just acting as lemmings and camera men for Robs mission to find the girl.
That is just a MINOR gripe to an overall cool movie.

Funny at times, but when they reference pop culture or locations that are only relevant on that side of the pond, well it's not that funny damn it to me!

I liked it back in the day. What's the worst that can come of rewatching it? You don't like it? Who knows, maybe now you do. If you have NetFlix or a similar service, you really can't lose.
