Yeah, honestly I was rather surprised they didn't wait until E3. Maybe they want the attention focused on something else at that time....like maybe finally show some stuff for SMT4 that was announced back in 2005 for PS3.
a lot of the games that were announced back in 2005 for release on PS3, only started showing up on PS3 late last year, and this year (like Resident Evil 5 for example). So here's hoping to seeing something big.

The Shin Megami Tensei game announced in 2005 for the PS3 never existed. It was the result of a mistranslated article from Famitsu. Not to say the console isn't going to get SMT4, so much as THAT particular game just never existed.
Not to mention Atlus doesn't have the funds to do a 4 year + dev cycle for one game. They crank most of their #### out in 1-1.5 years.
I wanted this game when I first saw screen shots off it last year. Now that I've seen the trailer for it, DAMN!!!! This is going to be a loooong wait.

Import the China/Asia or Korean version, rush ship it if you must. They are in full 100% English with English voices and even English player to player interaction.
Unfortunately, my Asian copy arrived a few days after they announced they were picking up the NA release after all. Not that I regret buying it, I only wish I had had more time before that announcement to feel special.
Please excuse the irony of suggesting on the publisher/localizer's forums to skip the localization and buy direct from the countries that already have it. Buy it twice if you must, the game is that good.

You're right. I say unless people are nuts like me and plan on also buying the us version when it's release, they should wait. Honestly I think Atlus deserves that we buy it as thanks for bringing the game here. If people buy it then they'll bring other cool games here so it's a win-win situation.

You see, I just don't see any point in waiting. Sure, I might understand "thanking" atlus for localizing it for us, but what are they really doing? Far as I can tell, they are changing some text so that is correct instead of just understandable, and bringing it to stores in NA.
The game is great, support From Software and whatever other companies made it and released it first, and wait for atlus to actually do something, like release a game that actually needs to be translated, at least.
spazmatron
06-17-2009, 08:58 PM
atlus are doing something, sure the english text is pretty good but there ARE errors, sometimes an item description just cuts off suddenly in the middle of a sentence and other descriptions are rather vague and require experimentation or googling to find out quite what they mean. there's also the issue of the manual, which is entirely in chinese for my edition, + a single slip of paper with a few control instructions in english. i think the average gamer might want a little more when faced with a game like this.
but you know, more important than that, is this actual business of getting the product into stores. just because we have been exposed to this game doesn't mean that there aren't many gamers out there who would enjoy it, but as of yet have never even heard of it. the import community is fairly small and a lot of people are hesitant to throw down money on a game that they know little about when they can walk into a shop right now and come out with whatever's hot at the moment. it's better for everybody if a gamer who hears about this can walk into his local shop and pick up a copy.
and buying an atlus-published copy of a from software game is supporting both atlus and from software.
sarshelyam

...and buying an atlus-published copy of a from software game is supporting both atlus and from software.
Yeah, sotanaht1, I understand your stance but importing does one of two things. It supports a company that isn't publishing in our territory, and it contributes to economic parity.
Aside from that, wouldn't you like to have the version that is, essentially, the master version. ATLUS is looking at bug fixes that have plagued the import versions. I have never encountered any of these bugs in my copy but I've heard plenty of complaints.
At any rate, this IS an ATLUS forum. If you aren't supporting the product in regards to ATLUS' involvement with it, then why bother posting at all. You're basically saying there's no point in buying the ATLUS version which, in a sense, is trolling...wouldn't you say?
In re: to Spaz's post, buying it from any region is supporting the original developers. To think otherwise is simply shortsighted.

It's almost too easy, even with a basic character. Knowing exactly what weapons work, what stats to boost, what spells are worth bothering with, makes it a complete doddle in comparison to first time round.
I've gone for pure hack & slash this time, at the expense of magic power. Already dual wielding a Crescent Uchigatana (+4) and Magic Sword "Makoto" (+1). Slicing and dicing my way through anyone foolish enough to be standing in my way!

I thought I replied with this already...
I have a level 8 character with makoto +5 and abjucator shield +4 (a colorless soul failed to drop), who literally kills players in a single hit. This character can also cast one time revival, which is why it is level 8 instead of 4-5. Unfortunately, I cannot kill the flamelurker in newgame+ as of yet with this character.
I also have a level 250 who earned the platnum, and a 51 who answers summons.
CUR715
06-28-2009, 01:56 AM
So what starting class did you use to keep your soul level so low?
You need at least 18 strength to use a Uchigatana, so that means you'd have to level up quite a bit, no matter what class you chose. The nearest is a Barbarian at 15, but they start at soul level 9.
I'm also assuming you've got bugger all health, stamina, mana etc?
sotanaht1
06-28-2009, 12:48 PM
I wield makoto 2-handed, so my str only needs to be 12, 13 dex. The starting class was temple knight in this case, though I think that may have been sub-optimal, and it means my str is 14 instead. Mana is exactly 103 with a silver catalyst and silver coronet, but I only need to use one spell (one time revival) one time. To equip that spell I must wear the ring of devout prayer. Health and stamina are default for the temple knight. I wear Rogues clothes with a silver coronet. Depending on how much time I have and how serious I take the threat, I may replace my ring of devout prayer with a foes ring or eternal warriors ring after I cast one time revival, my silver coronet with a 3 cornered hat, and my talisman of god with a minor weapon, typically my dragon knights sword+5.
After a certain patch which was before I bought the game, you could no longer reduce stats below their starting level for your class, regardless of your resulting soul level.

I thought I remember hearing that it of course would be 'Together', and that any translation-thoughts shouldn't be at mind because that the game would auto-translate the different languages to the Users' own language so they understand and can send back messages or leave their say, English message where the person in Japan could see it in Japanese? or etc? a translator in-game? Unsure, but I recall or think I heard something like that
Beyond that, all there is is emotes/gestures, so there shouldn't be a worry and that's how I think they planned it out to be from the beginning D:

If it's region free, though, wouldn't that mean imports could play with NA release?
mccrackey
06-29-2009, 11:25 AM
Well, I'm not exactly an expert, but most games do seem to be compatible between different regions online, so I'm *supposing* that NA users will be able to play with Korean users, etc, but that's still up in the air. It is still highly unlikely that you'd be able to use your Korean savegame on an NA disc, though.
And, as noted before, if the NA version gets new items, quests, or other, more minor enhancements, the other versions would have to be patched to make them compatible.
swordandshield
06-29-2009, 01:00 PM
There's restrictions that persist between different regional systems, such as copyright protection, region coding, and TV's not being compatible with imported consoles.
But I found that having a game enhancer or a hardware modchip installed will allow it to read the region code on imported games thus allowing it to be compatible. Don't do it if your PS2/PS3 is still in warranty as it will make it not valid anymore. Also memory cards and controllers are still functional on imported games.

First off I only bought the Korean import because everything I read about it said no one would take this game on, and there was some company brown nosing issues that created red tape stupidity. So it was only out of the belief it was never coming out here I even bought my version.
If Atlus had sent an email sooner I would have fully paid off my pre-order by now, Atlus gets most of mine already, wouldn't have been different. If there are improvements this game is worth the wait.
Now if they added some things like disemboweling and additional multiple types of dismemberment, some nudity, and (SPOILER WARNING: ) one tale in saving a particular hinted at rape of a witch, fixed the world dark and light scales resetting in the nexus without some damn warning before going online with the new patch, I'd be quite impressed; but I wouldn't have given a rat's rear if I'd known they were bringing it to my local gamestop/babbage's, local small store, conglomerate corporate, amazon, et cetera.
Might be how I do it for another devil doll even, I have had to let go two of them, love good shi... er with my game orders, hell I love T-shirts/soundtracks et cetera, too.

The way around THAT hurdle, is to make another character! My plan was to have a minimum effective level build for every common level range, that fell through a bit, but since I already have a level 250, and I made a level 51, its not so bad. Besides, the character always needs effective supplies, so I still have something to spend my souls on.

I created a new character last night to help out a few people i know who have only just got this.
Six hours later and i've got him about perfect. Couldn't realistically do it any lower than Soul Level 25 which he is:
Knight Build
Leather Geddup
"Makoto" +5
Kite Shield +10
Compound Long Bow +10
Firestorm
One Time Revival
Got tonnes of spare souls, but i'm gonna keep him at that level for quite a while (til everyone else catches up). Joined a couple of random games earlier, and he makes mince-meat out of pretty much anything. The Firestorm is surprisingly effective, even though i've not boosted my Magic stats (10 to start with).
sotanaht1
07-04-2009, 04:08 PM
A pretty good build. Do you use Makoto one-handed? Instead of the kite shield, you should alternate between the Dark Silver shield and Adjudicator's Shield. Adjudicator has regen, the amount of which increases with upgrades, 8hp per second at +5. The regen is ESPECIALLY necessary with Makoto, as it counteracts Makoto's health-drain. Dark silver is only good when you need to block magic attacks, because it is 100% on magic and physical. If you had the str, i would also recommend Purple fire shield + 10, becuase it has the highest hit res and 90% fire reduction, but it is 22 str, so its not good at low level. The fact that Adjudicator only has 90% damage cut (physical) may look pretty bad, but with its constant regen, it more then makes up for it.
Instead of Compound Long Bow +10, I would go with Vicious Compound Long Bow + 5, or a lava bow. Vicious increases range.
I would not recommend keeping Leather armor either. Personally, I like Dark Leather, Rogues Clothes, and Ancient King's (recent developments suggest ancient kings has no stamina penalty) Leather armor has a slight stamina penalty, which is not really worth it if you are wearing light armor, go only slightly lighter (or specifically unique) and you can do away with it.
Firestorm is incredibly effective, but for me, the hardest enemys are fire immune/resistant anyway. Also three spell slots don't come cheap, I have better things to focus my levels on then will.
You picked a good level. 25-30 will put you in range for the second set of areas (X-2). Very important if you are trying to help people in their first game. 10-20 is best if you are PVPing, becuase it allows you to break in on the first areas easily.

@ sotanaht1 - Good points all round. :agree:
I use the Makoto single-handed, and wear the regenerators ring to counteract the health drain.
I've tried the Vicious and Lava bow on previous builds, and didn't like either, the regular compound bow +10 has a lot more power, the range isn't really an issue, and i dislike the stunning effect of the fire.
I always choose the Kite Shield, because at +10 it's Hit Res is second to only the Tower Shield, plus it's small and light.
The leather armour is purely for aesthetic quality. Haha! I know the Black Leather is lighter. I've not been to see Old King Doran yet, otherwise i would've worn that. ;)

Say, speaking of bows... I'm having trouble figuring out how to do first-person with the bow. Is there a stat requirement? I heard you should equip the bow to two hands and press and hold L1. That just fires the bow...
Additionally, can crossbows be aimed this way (first person)?

Equip the Bow in your left hand. Press L1 once to ready it (this'll put away your right-hand weapon to free both hands). Press L1 again to enter first-person view. Press R1 to fire. You can zoom using up on the d-pad.
Oh, make sure you aren't locked onto an enemy.

Man im stoked for this game I had just found out about it and was getting ready to import when Atlus decided to publish this in NA. I have already pre-ordered the deluxe edition (even tho usually I wont touch a strategy guide in this case im ready to check it out). This game is probably gonna keep me busy the next 6 months. I used to play games like Ultima and Wizardy when I was young and although I love all the new technology and all the new RPG's they all lack that BRUTAL difficulty and sense of accomplishment. I have waited for a game like this for a long time and cant wait to get my hands on it, the old school "rpg feeling" with all the bad arse HD graphics and sound. Heres looking to lots of late nights and I hope the game is as challenging as everyone says...This could be my last RPG purchase this generation.
Thanks Atlus for the RPG my Sony needed. I also wanted to say that many times in the last couple years Xbox 360 got games that Sony didnt and I was really bummin (Left 4 Dead being the last time) and its nice to be on the other side of things for a change.
