Condemned 2, trying to beat it ASAP so I can trade it for this game my cousin wants (Army of Two, gah). I've actually been making good progress in (first person) games lately. Beat HL2 E2, and RSV2, and I've been beating quite a few of the terrorist hunt missions with my nephew, nothing like a good ol' co-op game for family bonding!

I'm also playing Kane's Wrath...

How come you didn't post that in the Spoils thread for this month? Just wondering.

hurr durr

lol, wtf does that mean?

Hmm, it's just somewhat nonsensical I suppose, kind of like something you say before saying "you ####ed up" or something.

On topic: SMT 1. Also, I think my brother is retarded. He's 13, and I just got him to finish Chrono Trigger. Then got him to play Earthbound. Had to turn the text speed on slow because he couldn't read it fast enough during battles. :/ Asked him why he read so slow, his response was "I never read because I don't like it." What the hell, when I was his age I was reading every Michael Chrichton book in existence. Kids these days.

I beat Crisis Core, wasn't worth the $40 so I'm glad I borrowed it.

Thank you.

Everyone seems to be going bat#### for this game when it's nothing more than a piece of ####, slow Kingdom Hearts with hurr durr random slot machine.

I thought it was absolute #### when I played the Japanese version, after playing it in English, I'd say it's about average, too short for $40 though.

You should expect the same from FFXIII since they are making two of them and probably spin-offs.

Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon for DS

You really thought so? I thought it was so unsatisfying. And the addition to the Hunters who could take your stuff was dumb because they were too easy. It was also really on the short side. Unfortunately, no unlockable bonus content other than a hard difficulty and a dead online community (I must have seen the same 7 or 8 people for the past three days!) make me feel like I've been ripped off. :(

I purchased Mana Khemia and have started that.

However, I found a great little game store in Salt Lake City (forgot the name of it) at a mall and snagged a copy of Panzer Dragoon Orta for ten bucks. I had wanted to play it for years. I never owned an original XBox but saw the game on the compatible games list for the 360 so I got it.

Since it was used, I just popped it into my console to make sure it was a working copy (it was in perfect condition, appearance-wise). 3 hours later, I just had to be sure it still worked. That game is great! It's booted Mana Khemia onto the back burner for now. Sega needs to make more games like this.

^When I finally broke down and bought an Xbox, I did so for Metal Slug 3. I kind of figured I would crack out on that once I had hooked everything up, but I ended up playing PDO a lot more instead -- I had purchased PDO years prior when it came out. PDO is great. I love all of the pertinent unlockables. Sega really had quite a few nice titles on Xbox. Outside of the Sega and SNK titles, I would have never touched my Xbox.

Have you played any of the other PD titles?

Not really. I watched someone play one at a party once, but never actually played it myself. I was kind of a skeptic for a while. When Drakengard came out, I saw the dragon sequences in that game compared to PD and was afraid that's how the game would play(that game was a digital turd for the most part). I probably wouldn't have paid full price for Orta when it came out. In retrospect, it would have been well worth the price. It's just plain fun to play. I love shooters like that.

I know it's criticized here, but the 360 has really been a worthwhile purchase. It has a wider variety of games that interest me and a few of my really good friends from back home own one and it's fun to chat with them while I play.

You said there were some other titles on the XBox you felt were worth it. Care to share a few more with me? I'm really interested in picking up some good games I may have missed due to not owning one. If they're multi-platform, the chances are good that I already own them.

You didn't ask me specifically but I thought I'd give some of my recommendations anyway. I've been without power for a few days and I'm bored so I'll throw in some gameplay footage for a few of them to give you a better idea.

Phantom Dust -

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KDQ6a6eNt98

I figured I'd mention this one first since you praised PDO and I believe this was created by the same person as PDO(I've forgotten his name now). If not for Jet Set Radio Future, this would probably be my favorite title on Xbox. It's an action-strategy game which is somewhat card-based. Basically you choose which powers and abilities(offensive, defensive, recovery, etc.) you want to take into battle(thus the card-based part). These appear on the battlefield as orbs and you walk over them and assign them to which ever face button(A, B, X, Y) you want to assign them too. Of course you are limited to the number of powers you can take into battle. The strategy elements get much deeper as you progress through the game. The story was pretty good I thought and it's a decent length. It took me about 35 hours to complete.

Jet Set Radio Future

You probably already know what it is but I still wanted to mention it. It's still my favorite Xbox title and one of favorite platformers in general.

Otogi (1 & 2)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=77v4ymNNQi0

Otogi is an action game where you play as an undead warrior named Raikoh in a mythological Japanese setting kicking demon ass. I've seen it compared to Shinobi mainly because your health(and magic) drain as you play. Although I don't think it's nearly as hard as Shinobi nor is this draining factor anything of a hindrance once you level up a bit and become stronger. It's not as deep as say DMC or Ninja Gaiden in terms of combat, but it's still a worthy action game with plenty of weapons, spells, and items to collect and lots of destructible objects in the environment.

Kingdom Under Fire: The Cursuders
Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes

http://youtube.com/watch?v=nhFc97Hx9fM

RTS mixed with hack-n-slash. I thought this was the best RTS that has ever been on a console honestly(there are better on PC of course). Heroes is a prequel and is more polished than Crusaders since it allows you to replay stages, has a free mode, and has a larger and more diverse roster of characters to play. The 360 sequel, Circle of Doom, is more of a Diablo-esque dungeon crawler that I've heard mixed feelings about(mostly bad). But these two titles were really good IMO.

Gun Valkyrie

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PVmjZ5kRYt0

This game is really hard to be honest. The learning curve for the controls is extremely steep because they're so complicated and can be frustrating. In the video you see the guy boosting around the screen which is the key to the gameplay. Although doing this requires you to click in the analog sticks in different directions continously in order to remain airbourne. It takes a lot of practice to pull it off as well as the guy does in the video, but it's so fun once you get the hang of it. If the controls were more user friendly this game would've been much more popular IMO. But it's worth checking out especially since you can get it for pretty cheap.

Futomimi

Most of the regular ones respawn after three days, and the bosses (black FOEs at the end of strata) after 14. The only exceptions that I know of (up to B25) are some foes on floor B20 that will respawn if you go back to town after killing them. There are also bosses on floors B21 and B25 that will never respawn after you beat them.

Growlanser II was great, III I felt was pretty damn weak. Sure there was a small twist at the end but it was still overall lame compared to II. I really like how the characters from the original are present. The game itself is pretty damn hard, I remember how many times I lost because I didn't think #### through in terms of walking paths for some of my characters. There was one battle where I had to walk off screen and ambush people from behind, I didn't know you had to just point them off the the side to do it though lol.

Although I have a feeling I would have fallen asleep while sailing around in SIV regardless. As Ray mentioned it is really tedious with the high encounter rate.

Hard to determine without spoilers, but it's plenty obvious when you are reaching the end.

Etrian Odyssey - First Stratum

My party right now is Defender, Dark Hunter, Alchemist, Troubadour, and Medic. I like parties that work together to strategically meet my goals rather than just using brute force to plow through games. Do you guys think that this party will work for me?

Sei
04-16-2008, 12:16 PM
I'd get rid of the defender, but yeah, any party can work really, as long as you get immunizewith your medic. Later on you get Ronin and Hexer too, Hexer works awesome with a whip dark hunter.

Futomimi
04-16-2008, 01:08 PM
What? Defender/Protector is awesome. I had a Dark Hunter at first and switched her out quickly for a Survivalist, but both classes are useful if you give them the right skills. One thing you may want to consider is that the Hexer class, which you get later, apparently has a higher rate of success at binding enemies than the DH class.
Troubadour is awesome. Getting a Landsknecht might be a good idea, but they are the brute physical force party of the game, so they may not be your favorite.

Sei
04-16-2008, 01:46 PM
Heh, on my first playthrough I had a defender with the guarding skills thinking they always connected and they never seemed to :( Eventually he went for a Dark Hunter, who while having poor def could shut down most bosses right off with the "bind whatever" skills.

I do hear that some of the def skills are necessary for the post game bosses like the Drake but, I dunno, never really connected with him.

Hexer + Dark Hunter gives you ecstasy too!. I think my final party in that game was Dark Hunter Ronin Landsketch, Troubador and either hex or alkie.

FF 6 on the PSX and FF 1 on the GBA. Almost through with both (just spell and Economizer earning before Kefka's Tower on the former and in the Temple of Chaos with Ultima Weapon on the latter).

After 6, that will leave me with 2 main line FF's that I haven't beaten (3 if you counting 11 which I'll probably never play).

Playing Rondo of Swords. It's going to take me quite a while to get used to the gameplay (I've died about 3 times in the first stage alone), and I'm still not sure if I like the whole running through people to attack. Note that I said me up there, as I'm sure other people are probably having an easier time than I am. It's good so far, but I'm not a big fan of the battle animations up to this point.

I ended up switching my EO party. Took a Landsknecht in place of the Dark Hunter. It just seemed that my front line was getting constantly pulverized. Maybe if I had a Landsknecht, Protector, and the Dark Hunter in the front line it would be better, since damage would be distributed across more characters.

On the third floor now.

Landschkenchshchkkkcht > Dark Hunter

Anyway...

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. It's kind of childish, almost infantile, yet, it's really charming. It's definitely geared toward children. Combat is basic hack and slash and pretty easy, but fun. I'm only just past the first dungeon, but so far, I like this game.

I owe DTR and Sanctine Condemned 2 impressions. Here they are in two words: ####ING AWESOME. Go buy it now.

I've still been playing Rondo of Swords. I must say that I'm liking it so far, aside from the battle animations (but I can skip them, so I do most of the time). Once I remembered that if you quit a battle you can carry over EXP I decided to train my characters...but not for my own good.

I'm at a point where I'm trying to save a random person introduced in this battle, and she keeps running straight towards the enemy with her arms wide-####ing-open. I'm trying to save her, but it's not working well as she runs further than I do.

Eh, it's still fun. I'd give it 8.5/10

Landschkenchshchkkkcht > Dark Hunter

Well, there are instances that a Dark Hunter can deal obscene damage. Like 10K in one turn obscene.

Sayckeone
04-18-2008, 06:26 AM
There are also instances where Dark Hunters get their asses kicked in two turns. This instance happens more often than the one you mentioned.

Srsly though, I tried the DH, but he was dying constantly. Took him out and got a Survivalist. Never looked back.

PFV
04-18-2008, 06:41 AM
Haha, well, it's probably just one instance anyways.

I dropped my DH out of my lineup pretty quick (for the same reason) when I tried one out (didn't try near as hard to make them work like I did with Hexer). It was probably just by mere miracle that I remembered one of their skills to try it in this instance.

They really aren't so bad when you have some of their top-tier gear, but one of those pieces can be exceptionally irritating to acquire...

Survivalist are awesome, though. I don't think I could imagine not using one at this point.

I had a Dark Hunter at first until level 20 or so, then realized that she sucked hardcore and I didn't care enough to level her up enough to give her better skills. I took her out for a Protector and never put her back in my party.

Good choice Kid. I just don't think a game like Baroque would be fun without a bit of a challenge.

Congrats, I'm going to put some time into the game this weekend.

It ended up being better than I expected. The only problem is that it can get really repetitive if you miss a key point since that will keep you from progressing through the story. Meaning that you will have to go through that iteration of the dungeon until you advance the story.

Unfortunately it is really easy to miss stuff if you aren't using some sort of guide or if you don't search every nook and cranny of each floor.

I was playing The Witcher on PC, as well as a bit of Mana Khemia and Baroque, but they all went on my "to finish later" pile (which now has way too many games in it :? ) as I got Etrian Odyssey.

Still near the begining, on the 3rd floor with characters around level 12. At first my party was Landsnecht, Dark Hunter, Protector, Alchemist and Medic, but I decided to ditch the DH for a Survivalist instead. But I kinda like the Dark Hunter, so I'm thinking of maybe swiching another character for it.

Other than that I play the occasional Halo 1 game on PC with the guys from my job and a bit of Arcana Heart with my girlfriend. We both suck very much at it for now, I find it a lot harder than Steet Fighter II or even Guilty Gear, but it's also more rewarding when I manage to get to Mildred... only to get my ass kicked. :x

Also I saw Izuna at my nearby EB-Games for 24$, I'm still hesitating about buying it since I have many other games to play and the reviews aren't very good. (but then again Baroque got some pretty bad reviews and I still like it)

Saishu
04-19-2008, 11:49 AM
Arcana Heart is really hard to master. It's the same with me, I think Guilty Gear is easier to play.

You're going to have to run and hide in the corner and do nothing but spam fireballs or the laser attack from Heart's Arcana to definitely win against Mildred.

I've been playing Darkstalkers PSP. Portability rules. I think I'm almost done with console gaming... I need to pick up Castlevania.

You might want to try out a two handed weapon if you haven't already. The sword arc is much wider (the stunning attacking looks like a 180 degree arc) than the one handed sword and you can hit multiple enemies from the side or behind without having to lock on.

You have to trigger plot points for the dungeon to expand any farther, but yes, basically you just go through the dungeon while figuring out the story.

Me too. I had trouble with Fenrir at first because I just charged him head on, so I got ganked by his minions. The trick was to lure him away so that they took a few turns to reach us. By the time they got there, he was dead. :D

Only thing that sucks is that I still couldn't find Steven in Ikebukuro! I don't know if this is another one of those "translation patch screwed up the NPC script" issues like the Law Baptism or the antique shop thing. I mean I guess it doesn't matter, but still, it'd be nice to have some free healing before fighting Yama, which I should be avoiding anyway to stay Neutral but I can't resist the EXP, 'sides I heard TDL has a few places to really shove your alignment one way or the other so.

It's not so much the new demons that keep me going either; honestly, this game has a pretty damn good (but very terse) storyline. I find the biggest reason I keep playing to be "What happens next?"
